Abstract:Cylindrical vector beams (CVBs), which feature a unique spatially non-uniform polarization distribution with an axis symmetry, have been attracting increasing attention due to their various potential applications. However, mainstream CVB lasers demonstrated so far are emitting in the near-infrared wavelength region. The development of mid-infrared (MIR) CVB lasers can greatly broaden their application areas, especially when operating in the mode-locking regime where high peak power ultrafast pulses can be produced. Here, we present the direct generation of MIR femtosecond CVBs from an Er-doped fluoride fiber laser. The mode-locking operation is realized by the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, accompanying with an intra-cavity CVB converter based on two S-waveplates. Both radially and azimuthally polarized beams in the form of mode-locking pulse trains are achieved in the experiment with a typical pulse width of 336 fs and a peak power of 7.3 kW at a repetition of 42.24 MHz. The center wavelength locates at around 2795 nm. This work can provide a solution for the direct generation of femtosecond CVBs in the MIR wavelength region and facilitate its application in fields such as micro-manufacturing and nanoparticle manipulation.

Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.

Abstract:Polarization is a property of vector beam that is widely used in many areas of science and technology. And vector beam is also called polarization vortex beam. Radially polarized beam and azimuthally polarized beam are the paradigm of vector beam. Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) vector beam could be applied in many fields such as diffractive imaging, Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUVL), or ultrafast control of magnetic properties. In our experiments, a home-made EUV spectrometer was used to generate a tunable ultrafast EUV coherent light source based on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) by intense femtosecond laser. The apparatus features by using the plane grating in conical diffraction. The radially polarized vector beam and Gaussian beam with 800 nm, 35 fs laser pulses were applied to interact with Argon atoms, respectively. The high harmonic spectrums with a polarization singularity and a Gaussian distribution were observed. The experimental results demonstrate that the EUV vector beam could be transfered from near-infrared driven laser during the highly nonlinear interaction. The short-wavelength radiation with a polarization singularity can reach a photon flux of 108 per second. And the harmonic orders produced by Gaussian beam are significantly higher than that of vector field. The mechanism of macroscopic phase matching was discussed. It indicates that the phase matching for vector harmonic yields is similar with that driven by a Gaussian beam. In this case, EUV vector beam through HHG has been obtained, which provides one important method for attosecond vector pulses and opens new possibilities for exploring and manipulating the time-dependent evolution of quantum states in atom and molecule.

Abstract:The properties of optical vortex provide new insights into a wide range of optical and physical phenomena, giving rise to numerous applications in multiple disciplines. Notably, as much as the associated technologies have become increasingly flexible, it is still challenging to simultaneously generate multiple longitudinal polarization optical vortices with random topological charges (l) and tunable intensities at arbitrary positions. Herein, a novel approach that, by manipulating phase and amplitude at the back pupil of a high numerical-aperture (NA) objective, realizes arbitrary longitudinal polarization vortices within the tightly focused light field is developed. Building upon the same model, the impacts of polarization on the optical vortex field and its potential of tuning the ratio of the longitudinal polarization component are further investigated.

Abstract:In high harmonic generation (HHG), Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams are used to generate extreme ultraviolet (XUV) vortices with well-defined orbital angular momentum (OAM), which have potential applications in fields such as microscopy and spectroscopy. We conducted an experimental study on the HHG driven by vortex and Gaussian beams. We found that the intensity of vortex harmonics was positively correlated with the laser energy and gas pressure. The structure and intensity distribution of the vortex harmonics exhibit significant dependence on the relative position between the gas jet and the laser focus. The ring-like structures observed in the vortex harmonics, and the interference of quantum paths provide an explanation for the distinct structural characteristics. Moreover, by adjusting the relative position between the jet and laser focus, it is possible to discern the contributions from different quantum paths. The optimization of the HH vortex field is applicable to the XUV, which opens new avenues for exploiting the potential in optical spin or manipulating electrons using the photon with tunable orbital angular momentum.

Abstract:Structured beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) provide powerful capabilities for applications in optical tweezers, super-resolution imaging, quantum optics, and ad-vanced microparticle manipulation. However, it is challenging for generate and control the OAM beams at the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) region due to the lack of suitable wave front shaping optics arise from being limited to the strong absorption of most materials. Here, we use a modified Fermat-spiral photon-sieve splitter to simultaneously generate two focused doughnut beams with opposite helical phase. Our technique enables us to produce splitting focused vortex beams with different rotation directions at EUV wavelengths. Additionally, we provide experimental evidence showcasing the capabilities of our method and further detect the helical phase by self-reference interferometry. This work not only opens a route for OAM-driven applications in EUV radiation, but also paves the way to studies of holographic technique by EUV splitter.
Generation of Intense High-Order Vortex Harmonics.

Abstract:This Letter presents for the first time a scheme to generate intense high-order optical vortices that carry orbital angular momentum in the extreme ultraviolet region based on relativistic harmonics from the surface of a solid target. In the three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation, the high-order harmonics of the high-order vortex mode is generated in both reflected and transmitted light beams when a linearly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian laser pulse impinges on a solid foil. The azimuthal mode of the harmonics scales with its order. The intensity of the high-order vortex harmonics is close to the relativistic region, with the pulse duration down to attosecond scale. The obtained intense vortex beam possesses the combined properties of fine transversal structure due to the high-order mode and the fine longitudinal structure due to the short wavelength of the high-order harmonics. In addition to the application in high-resolution detection in both spatial and temporal scales, it also presents new opportunities in the intense vortex required fields, such as the inner shell ionization process and high energy twisted photons generation by Thomson scattering of such an intense vortex beam off relativistic electrons.

Abstract:We propose to generate vortex high harmonics in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) with a controllable spatial profile by using a Bessel-Gaussian (BG) beam carrying a nonzero orbital angular momentum (OAM). Such BG beam has quite a different intensity profile at the focus compared to the generally used BG beam without carrying the OAM. We show that the BG beam is capable of generating single-ring structured high harmonics, which is quite different from an Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam with a similar intensity distribution at the laser focus. We reveal that favorable phase-matching conditions can be achieved off-axis and away from the laser focus because a single-atom intrinsic phase due to the short electron trajectory can be well compensated by a geometric phase of the BG beam. We thus give a general rule that vortex high harmonics with a single annular profile can be efficiently generated when a gas medium is located at 1.5zred to 2.0zred before or after the laser focus of the BG beam, here zred is a reduced length. We also show the validity of this rule when the BG beam carries a higher OAM. This work is expected to be useful for synthesizing attosecond vortex pulses.

Abstract:It has been recently reported that ultraviolet harmonic vortices can be produced when a high-power circular-polarized laser pulse travels through a micro-scale waveguide. However, the harmonic generation quenches typically after a few tens of microns of propagation, due to the buildup of electrostatic potential that suppresses the amplitude of the surface wave. Here we propose to use a hollow-cone channel to overcome this obstacle. When traveling in a cone target, the laser intensity at the entrance is relatively low to avoid extracting too many electrons, while the slow focusing by the cone channel subsequently counters the established electrostatic potential, allowing the surface wave to maintain a high amplitude for a much longer distance. According to three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the harmonic vortices can be produced with very high efficiency >20%. The proposed scheme paves the way for the development of powerful optical vortices sources in the extreme ultraviolet regime-an area of significant fundamental and applied physics potential.

Abstract:The creation of ultraviolet optical vortex beams with the topological charge of $ \vert l \vert = 1 $|l|=1 at the wavelength of 325 nm was demonstrated from a He-Cd metal vapor laser with a spot defect mirror. The measured $ {{\rm M}^2} $M2 factor was close to the theoretical value of two of the $ {{\rm LG}_{01}} $LG01 Laguerre-Gaussian mode. Some interference experiments showed that the obtained vortex beams were stable enough for practical applications such as holographic lithography.

High-efficient harmonic vortex generation from a laser irradiated hollow-cone target

Abstract:Vigorous efforts to harness the topological properties of light have enabled a multitude of novel applications. Translating the applications of structured light to higher spatial and temporal resolutions mandates their controlled generation, manipulation, and thorough characterization in the short-wavelength regime. Here, we resort to high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in a noble gas to upconvert near-infrared (IR) vector, vortex, and vector-vortex driving beams that are tailored respectively in their Spin Angular Momentum (SAM), Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM), and simultaneously in their SAM and OAM. We show that HHG enables the controlled generation of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) vector beams exhibiting various spatially-dependent polarization distributions, or EUV vortex beams with a highly twisted phase. Moreover, we demonstrate the generation of EUV vector-vortex beams (VVB) bearing combined characteristics of vector and vortex beams. We rely on EUV wavefront sensing to unambiguously affirm the topological charge scaling of the HHG beams with the harmonic order. Interestingly, our work shows that HHG allows for a synchronous controlled manipulation of SAM and OAM. These EUV structured beams bring in the promising scenario of their applications at nanometric spatial and sub-femtosecond temporal resolutions using a table-top harmonic source.

Abstract:Ultrafast vortex beams have been successfully utilized in a wide variety of applications. Here, we report on the generation of the visible and near-infrared cylindrical vector beams with femtosecond pulse duration and tens of Watts average output power. Based on an optimized fiber chirped-pulse amplification system and second harmonic generation technology, Gaussian beams are generated at the visible and near-infrared wavelength, respectively. After mode conversion operation, the high-quality cylindrical vector beams can be obtained with a central wavelength of 1036.13 nm and maximum output power and ultrafast pulse duration of 60.49 W/824 fs for radial vector beams and 59.67 W/783 fs for azimuthal vector beams. In the visible spectral region, the output cylindrical vector beams have a maximum output power of 30.78 W (radial vector beams) and 27.46 W (azimuthal vector beams) at 515.75 nm central wavelength. The pulse durations are measured to be 262 fs for radial vector beam and 273 fs for azimuthal vector beam at the maximum output power. The results demonstrate that the proposed laser systems may pay a promising way to develop high-power femtosecond cylindrical vector beams sources in the visible and near-infrared wavelength for optical communication, super-resolution imaging and laser processing.

Abstract:The x-ray vortex optical beam, distinguished by its topological charge and orbital angular momentum, offers new insights in probing complex electronic structures, enhancing material characterization, and advancing high-resolution imaging techniques. Here we propose a straightforward and effective method to generate intense x-ray vortices with tunable wavelengths in high-gain free-electron lasers (FELs). By simply adjusting the wavefront tilt of the radiation pulse during the FEL gain process, high-quality vortex beam can be amplified until saturation. Compared to existing methods for FEL vortex generation, the proposed technique imposes no wavelength limitations and can be easily implemented in high-gain FEL facilities, regardless of the operation modes.

Abstract:Vector beams, beams with a non-uniform state of polarization, have become an indispensable tool in many areas of science and technology. Harnessing topological light properties paves the way to control and manipulate light–matter interactions at different levels, from the quantum to macroscopic physics. Here we generate tabletop extreme ultraviolet (EUV) vector beams driven by high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Our experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that HHG imprints the polarization state of the fundamental (infrared) beam, ranging from radial to azimuthal, into the higher frequency radiation. Our numerical simulations also demonstrate that the generated high-order harmonic beams can be synthesized into attosecond vector beams in the EUV/soft x-ray regime. Our proposal overcomes the state-of-the-art-limitations for the generation of vector beams far from the visible domain and could be applied in fields such as diffractive imaging, EUV lithography, or ultrafast control of magnetic properties.

Abstract:We propose a simple, efficient, and fast tunable method to generate arbitrary vector vortex beams on the hybrid-order Poincare sphere in an electrically driven way. The scheme incorporates the tunability and switching capabilities of liquid crystals into dielectric metasurfaces to form an efficient vector vortex beam generator. By applying certain voltages on the liquid crystal phase retarder, the generator converts a linearly polarized Gaussian beam into any desirable vector vortex beams. We demonstrate that the evolution route of the corresponding vector vortex states is just a closed circuit on the hybrid-order Poincare sphere when the phase retardation varies from 0 to 2 pi. Several special cases are selected to demonstrate our scheme, and the experimental results coincide well with the theoretical predictions. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America
