Abstract:An increasingly large variety of molecular species are being cooled down to low energies in recent years, and innovative ideas and powerful techniques continue to emerge to gain ever more precise control of molecular motion. In this brief review we focus our discussions on two widely employed cooling techniques that have brought molecular gases into the quantum regime: association of ultracold atomic gases into quantum gases of molecules and direct laser cooling of molecules. These advances have brought into reality our capability to prepare and manipulate both internal and external states of molecules quantum mechanically, opening the field of cold molecules to a wide range of scientific explorations.

Abstract:The piling up of a macroscopic fraction of noninteracting bosons in the lowest energy state of a system at very low temperatures is known as Bose-Einstein condensation. It took nearly 70 years to observe the condensate after their theoretical prediction. A brief history of the relevant developments, essentials of the basic theory, physics of the steps involved in producing the condensate in a gas of alkali atoms together with the pertinent theory, and some important features of the research work carried out in the last about 25 years have been dealt with. An effort has been made to present the material in a manner that it can be easily followed by undergraduate students as well as non-specialists and may even be used for classroom teaching.

Abstract:Degenerate quantum gases are instrumental in advancing many-body quantum physics and underpin emerging precision sensing technologies. All state-of-the-art experiments use evaporative cooling to achieve the ultracold temperatures needed for quantum degeneracy, yet evaporative cooling is extremely lossy: more than 99.9% of the gas is discarded. Such final particle number limitations constrain imaging resolution, gas lifetime, and applications leveraging macroscopic quantum coherence. Here we show that atomic Bose gases can be cooled to quantum degeneracy using real-time feedback, an entirely new method that does not suffer the same limitations as evaporative cooling. Through novel quantum-field simulations and scaling arguments, we demonstrate that an initial low-condensate-fraction thermal Bose gas can be cooled to a high-purity Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by feedback control, with substantially lower atomic loss than evaporative cooling. Advantages of feedback cooling are found to be robust to imperfect detection, finite resolution of the control and measurement, time delay in the control loop, and spontaneous emission. Using feedback cooling to create degenerate sources with high coherence and low entropy enables new capabilities in precision measurement, atomtronics, and few- and many-body quantum physics.

Abstract:From the study of long-range-interacting systems to the simulation of gauge fields, open-shell lanthanide atoms with their large magnetic moment and narrow optical transitions open novel directions in the field of ultracold quantum gases. As for other atomic species, the magnetooptical trap (MOT) is the working horse of experiments but its operation is challenging, due to the large electronic spin of the atoms. Here we present an experimental study of narrow-line dysprosium MOTs. We show that the combination of radiation pressure and gravitational forces leads to a spontaneous polarization of the electronic spin. The spin composition is measured using a Stern–Gerlach separation of spin levels, revealing that the gas becomes almost fully spinpolarized for large laser frequency detunings. In this regime, we reach the optimal operation of the MOT, with samples of typically 3 108 ́ atoms at a temperature of 15 μK. The spin polarization reduces the complexity of the radiative cooling description, which allows for a simple model accounting for our measurements. We also measure the rate of density-dependent atom losses, finding good agreement with a model based on light-induced Van der Waals forces. A minimal two-body loss rate 2 10 11 b ~ ́ cm s is reached in the spin-polarized regime. Our results constitute a benchmark for the experimental study of ultracold gases of magnetic lanthanide atoms.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the laser cooling techniques, we can realize coherent quantum state manipulation of atoms. Invaluable results, such as topological phase transitions with artificial gauge fields, phase transitions induced by many body interaction, the atomic fountain frequency standard, the gravity constant using an interferometer, the magic wave optical lattice frequency standard, the cold ion frequency standard and the cold atom gravimeter and gyroscope results, have been obtained with respect to various applications, including quantum phase transitions, simulation of the novel quantum states, and precise measurement of the cold atoms. The laser cooling techniques frequently break the previous accuracy records; thus, they are gradually setting the new quantum measurement standards. In addition, some of these techniques play vital roles in geological prospecting and national defense. In this review, we will focus on the novel quantum states induced by laser cooling and the corresponding phase transitions as well as the optical detection and manipulation of the quantum phases. To be specific, the energy spectrum in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with spin-orbital angular momentum coupling is discrete, and a first-order phase transition can be observed between the states having different angular momentums. We investigated the topological phase transitions induced by the many-body interactions, in which we observed that when using different filling numbers and interactions, topological phase transitions can be observed in a hexagonal optical lattice with high orbitals and different topological states can be indexed using the Chern numbers. Further, based on our investigation, we observed the occurence of a quantum phase transition between the novel superfluid states, i.e., the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluid states to the Sarma superfluid states, owing to the imbalanced Feshbach resonance. Finally, we developed methods to measure the optical spectrum of the nP Rydberg states of the Rb-87 atoms and detect the quantum states in optical lattices; in addition, we constructed a multicomponent BEC interferometer.

Abstract:After a brief historical introduction to Bose-Einstein condensation and Fermi degeneracy, we discuss theoretical results we have recentely obtained for trapped degenerate quantum gases by means of a thermal field theory approach. In particular, by using Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-Popov equations, we consider thermodynamical properties of two Bosonic systems: a gas of Lithium atoms and a gas of Hydrogen atoms. Finally, we investigate finite-temperature density profiles of a dilute Fermi gas of Potassium atoms confined in a harmonic potential.

Abstract:The extension of thermodynamics into the quantum regime has received much attention in recent years. A primary objective of current research is to find thermodynamic tasks which can be enhanced by quantum mechanical effects. With this goal in mind, we explore the finite-time dynamics of absorption refrigerators composed of three qubits. The aim of this finite-time cooling is to reach low temperatures as fast as possible and subsequently extract the cold particle to exploit it for information processing purposes. We show that the coherent oscillations inherent to quantum dynamics can be harnessed to reach temperatures that are colder than the steady state in orders of magnitude less time, thereby providing a fast source of low-entropy qubits. This effect demonstrates that quantum thermal machines can surpass classical ones, reminiscent of quantum advantages in other fields, and is applicable to a broad range of technologically important scenarios.

A study of the semiclassical dynamics of the system was performed, showing bistability and instabilities. In the quantum domain, squeezing in a probe beam having interacted with this system was demonstrated.

Abstract:The field of ultracold quantum matter has burgeoned over the last few decades, thanks to the growing capabilities for atomic systems to be probed and manipulated with exquisite control. Researchers can now precisely create and study quantum many-body states that are effectively isolated from the external environment. Much of the work in ultracold matter has focused on systems of alkali or alkaline-earth atoms, mainly due to their ease of cooling. Extending this precise control to molecules has seen rapidly increasing interest and activity, as molecules possess additional degrees of freedom that make them useful for tests of fundamental physics, studying ultracold chemistry and collisions, and engineering qualitatively new types of quantum phases and quantum many-body systems. Here, we review one particularly fruitful research direction: the creation and manipulation of ultracold bialkali molecules. The recent success in creating a quantum gas of polar molecules opens many exciting research opportunities.

Abstract:Trapped ions offer much promise for near-term implementations of quantum computing. To ensure that the ions remain coherent, laser-cooling schemes are required to stave off decoherence caused by motional heating, but effective schemes must satisfy trade-offs between motional and dephasing errors, and between cooling power and chain length. This work uses a mix of theoretical and computational techniques to establish best practices for laser cooling for long chains of trapped ions. Stochastic Heating of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract:Understanding and controlling non-equilibrium processes at ultralow temperatures are central to quantum physics and technology. In such extreme environments, quantum coherence and dissipation can interact intimately to give rise to intriguing thermalization phenomena. Here, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate a novel scenario of thermalization in an ultracold atomic system, distinct from various quantum thermalization scenarios currently under intense investigations. We observe that after a sudden quench, an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) behaves as a rigid body and undergoes a random walk in momentum space due to atom loss and interactions with the surrounding thermal component. Consequently its center of mass degree of freedom gets heated up at a constant rate. This heating mechanism, rooted in random momentum scattering, falls into the paradigm of stochastic heating initiated by Fermi and thoroughly explored in plasma physics, which differs conceptually from the traditional thermal conduction. At longer times, the stochastic heating of the BEC is balanced by forced evaporative cooling, and a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution is achieved. Our findings offer new perspectives on the non-equilibrium dynamics of open Bose systems at ultralow temperature and quantum thermalization.

Abstract:Attempts to create quantum degenerate gases without evaporative cooling have been pursued since the early days of laser cooling, with the consensus that polarization gradient cooling (PGC, also known as "optical molasses") alone cannot reach condensation. In the present work, we report that simple PGC can generate a small Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) inside a corrugated micrometer-sized optical dipole trap. The experimental parameters enabling BEC creation were found by machine learning, which increased the atom number by a factor of 5 and decreased the temperature by a factor of 2.5, corresponding to almost 2 orders of magnitude gain in phase space density. When the trapping light is slightly misaligned through a microscopic objective lens, a BEC of ∼250 Rb87 atoms is formed inside a local dimple within 40 ms of PGC after MOT loading. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.233401 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Optical box traps offer new possibilities for quantum-gas experiments. Building on their exquisite spatial and temporal control, we propose to engineer system-reservoir configurations using box traps, in view of preparing and manipulating topological atomic states in optical lattices. First, we consider the injection of particles from the reservoir to the system: this scenario is shown to be particularly well suited to activating energy-selective chiral edge currents, but also to prepare fractional Chern insulating ground states. Then, we devise a practical evaporative-cooling scheme to effectively cool down atomic gases into topological ground states. Cold atoms as a coolant for levitated optomechanical systems

Abstract:Optically trapped dielectric objects are well suited for reaching the quantum regime of their center of mass motion in an ultra-high vacuum environment. We show that ground state cooling of an optically trapped nanosphere is achievable when starting at room temperature, by sympathetic cooling of a cold atomic gas optically coupled to the nanoparticle. Unlike cavity cooling in the resolved sideband limit, this system requires only a modest cavity finesse and it allows the cooling to be turned off, permitting subsequent observation of strongly-coupled dynamics between the atoms and sphere. Nanospheres cooled to their quantum ground state could have applications in quantum information science or in precision sensing.

Abstract:Ensembles of particles governed by quantum mechanical laws exhibit intriguing emergent behaviour. Atomic quantum gases 1,2 , liquid helium 3,4 and electrons in quantum materials 5,6,7 all exhibit distinct properties because of their composition and interactions. Quantum degenerate samples of ultracold dipolar molecules promise the realization of new phases of matter and new avenues for quantum simulation 8 and quantum computation 9 . However, rapid losses 10 , even when reduced through collisional shielding techniques 11,12,13 , have so far prevented evaporative cooling to a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC). Here we report on the realization of a BEC of dipolar molecules. By strongly suppressing two- and three-body losses via enhanced collisional shielding, we evaporatively cool sodium–caesium molecules to quantum degeneracy and cross the phase transition to a BEC. The BEC reveals itself by a bimodal distribution when the phase-space density exceeds 1. BECs with a condensate fraction of 60(10)% and a temperature of 6(2) nK are created and found to be stable with a lifetime close to 2 s. This work opens the door to the exploration of dipolar quantum matter in regimes that have been inaccessible so far, promising the creation of exotic dipolar droplets 14 , self-organized crystal phases 15 and dipolar spin liquids in optical lattices 16 .

Abstract:We present a scheme to cool the motional state of neutral atoms confined in sites of an optical lattice by immersing the system in a superfluid. The motion of the atoms is damped by the generation of excitations in the superfluid, and under appropriate conditions the internal state of the atom remains unchanged. This scheme can thus be used to cool atoms used to encode a series of entangled qubits non-destructively. Within realisable parameter ranges, the rate of cooling to the ground state is found to be sufficiently large to be useful in experiments.

Abstract:Advances in quantum state preparations combined with molecular cooling and trapping technologies have enabled unprecedented control of molecular collision dynamics. This progress, achieved over the last two decades, has dramatically improved our understanding of molecular phenomena in the extreme quantum regime characterized by translational temperatures well below a kelvin. In this regime, collision outcomes are dominated by isolated partial waves, quantum threshold and quantum statistics effects, tiny energy splitting at the spin and hyperfine levels, and long-range forces. Collision outcomes are influenced not only by the quantum state preparation of the initial molecular states but also by the polarization of their rotational angular momentum, i.e. , stereodynamics of molecular collisions. The Stark-induced adiabatic Raman passage technique developed in the last several years has become a versatile tool to study the stereodynamics of light molecular collisions in which alignment of the molecular bond axis relative to initial collision velocity can be fully controlled. Landmark experiments reported by Zare and coworkers have motivated new theoretical developments, including formalisms to describe four-vector correlations in molecular collisions that are revealed by the experiments. In this Feature article, we provide an overview of recent theoretical developments for the description of stereodynamics of cold molecular collisions and their implications to cold controlled chemistry.

Controlling Nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein Condensation with Engineered Environments

Abstract:Out of thermal equilibrium, bosonic quantum systems can Bose-condense away from the ground state, featuring a macroscopic occupation of an excited state or even of multiple states in the so-called Bose-selection scenario. In previous work, a theory was developed that predicts, in which states a driven-dissipative ideal Bose gas condenses. Here, we address the inverse problem: Given a target state with desired condensate fractions in certain single-particle states, how can this configuration be achieved by tuning available control parameters? Which type of experimental setup allows for flexible condensation control? We solve these problems, on the one hand, by proposing a Bose `condenser', experimentally implementable in a superconducting circuit, where targeted Bose condensation into eigenstates of a chain of resonators is driven through the coupling to artificial quantum baths, realized via auxiliary two-level systems. On the other, we develop a theory to solve the inverse problem based on linear programming methods. We further discuss the engineering of transition points between different Bose condensation configurations, which may find application for amplification, heat-flow control, and the design of highly-structured quantum baths.
