Abstract:Various types of Mg electrolytes have emerged with the deepening and development of research on Rechargeable Magnesium-Metal Batteries. In order to assess the potential of these electrolytes to inhibit the growth of Mg dendrites, we apply a Mg-electrodeposition phase-field model with surface energy anisotropy to simulate the interface growth processes of Mg-metal anodes in different electrolytes during electrodeposition. The results show that the conductivity and Mg-ion diffusivity of the Mg electrolyte are key factors affecting the interface growth, with the diffusivity having a particularly significant effect. In the designed 1.0 M MgX/THF electrolyte with an applied overpotential of -0.30 V, by profoundly analyzing the fluctuation of the interface contour, we find that when the diffusivity reaches 1.4 x 10-10 m2/s, the Mg-metal anode interface can achieve stable growth.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have the potential to provide a sustainable and long-term solution for large-scale energy storage due to high theoretical capacity of magnesium (Mg) metal as an anode, its competitive redox potential (Mg/Mg2+: -2.37 V vs. SHE) and high natural abundance. To develop viable magnesium batteries with high energy density, the electrolytes must meet a range of requirements: high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical potential window, chemical compatibility with electrode materials and other battery components, favourable electrode-electrolyte interfacial properties and cost-effective synthesis. In recent years, significant progress in electrolyte development has been made. Herein, a comprehensive overview of these advancements is presented. Beginning with the early developments, we particularly focus on the chemical aspects of the electrolytes and their correlations with electrochemical properties. We also highlight the design of new anions for practical electrolytes, the use of electrolyte additives to optimize anode-electrolyte interfaces and the progress in polymer electrolytes.

Abstract:Magnesium batteries have attracted considerable interest due to their favorable characteristics, such as a low redox potential (−2.356 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE)), a substantial volumetric energy density (3833 mAh cm −3 ), and the widespread availability of magnesium resources on Earth. This facilitates the commercial production of magnesium batteries for widespread applications. Nonetheless, The progression of magnesium battery technology faces hindrances from the creation of a passivated film at the interface between the magnesium anode and electrolyte, along with the slow diffusion kinetics of Mg 2+ . Accordingly, exploring magnesium electrolytes is regarded as a viable approach to address the previously mentioned obstacles. This review presents a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in magnesium electrolytes, encompassing organic Grignard reagents and their derived systems, magnesium–aluminum-chloride complex (MACC) systems, boron-based systems, and molten salt systems. Specifically, it systematically examines various promising strategies for magnesium electrolytes, primarily focusing on improving the efficient reversible Mg deposition/stripping within the electrolyte. Ultimately, the present state of electrolyte advancement is concisely outlined, and the prospective directions of magnesium battery evolution are delineated. This brief review aims to furnish researchers with insights into the prevailing challenges and inspire researchers to formulate magnesium electrolytes suitable for commercial applications.

Abstract:Abstract Magnesium metal batteries (MMBs) currently face challenges suffering from severe Mg metal passivation and extremely high overpotential in conventional electrolytes. Herein, a strategy of using a low‐cost deep eutectic solution (DES) is proposed to modify Mg anode with the monolithic and compact coating of a MgCl 2 ‐Al‐MgCl 2 sandwich structure, enabling the stable and reversible Mg plating–stripping behavior. An organic/nanocrystal hybrid interphase is in‐situ built through a facile Mg‐Al displacement reaction between aluminum‐chloro clusters and Mg in AlCl 3 /Et 3 NHCl solution, and it can effectively minimize the adverse interfacial passivation reaction and surface diffusion barrier, affording the high ion‐conduction and electronic insulation. This DES‐assisted method guarantees a highly reversible cycling of Mg metal anode (over 5000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 and 400 h at 2.0 mAh cm −2 ) in Mg(TFSI) 2 /DME electrolyte with the improved interfacial kinetics and low overpotential. Even at a much higher current density of 1 mA cm −2 , the overpotential only undergoes a slight increase from 0.2 V (at 0.1 mA cm −2 ) to 0.23 V. The corresponding full cells with CuS and phenanthraquinone cathodes deliver satisfactory cyclic performance. The DES modification strategy provides a new solution to the design of robust and conductive solid electrolyte interphase for achieving high‐voltage and durable MMBs.

Abstract:Abstract Magnesium metal anode holds great potentials toward future high energy and safe rechargeable magnesium battery technology due to its divalent redox and dendrite-free nature. Electrolytes based on Lewis acid chemistry enable the reversible Mg plating/stripping, while they fail to match most cathode materials toward high-voltage magnesium batteries. Herein, reversible Mg plating/stripping is achieved in conventional carbonate electrolytes enabled by the cooperative solvation/surface engineering. Strongly electronegative Cl from the MgCl 2 additive of electrolyte impairs the Mg...O = C interaction to reduce the Mg 2+ desolvation barrier for accelerated redox kinetics, while the Mg 2+ -conducting polymer coating on the Mg surface ensures the facile Mg 2+ migration and the effective isolation of electrolytes. As a result, reversible plating and stripping of Mg is demonstrated with a low overpotential of 0.7 V up to 2000 cycles. Moreover, benefitting from the wide electrochemical window of carbonate electrolytes, high-voltage (> 2.0 V) rechargeable magnesium batteries are achieved through assembling the electrode couple of Mg metal anode and Prussian blue-based cathodes. The present work provides a cooperative engineering strategy to promote the application of magnesium anode in carbonate electrolytes toward high energy rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Strengthening water (H2O) interaction is a universal strategy for reducing H2O reactivity, yet often at the expense of kinetics. Here, we unveiled the controllable modulation of molecular structures in aqueous electrolytes and their tailorable electrochemical performance in high-energy aqueous batteries. The H-bond properties and special distributions are identified as crucial parameters to decouple the electrochemical stability and the transport properties of Li+ in the aqueous-based electrolytes. It is found that the mildly solvating ethylene glycol diethyl ether (DEE) is capable of balancing both high-energy Li-ion batteries with a greatly extended electrochemical window of 1.4-5.2 V vs. Li+/Li and high ionic conductivity of 7.2 mS cm(-1) at room temperature with a low salt concentration (1.57 mol/L). LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 aqueous cells deliver outstanding cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1C. One Ah pouch cell is demonstrated with a high energy density of 76.76 Wh kg(-1) at 0.2C and stable cycling performance at room temperature and a low temperature of -20 degrees C. This work provides new insights and strategies to design advanced electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries could provide future energy storage systems with high energy density. One remaining challenge is the development of electrolytes compatible with the negative Mg electrode enabling uniform plating and stripping with high Coulombic efficiencies. Often improvements are hindered by a lack of fundamental understanding of processes occurring during cycling as well as the existence and structure of a formed interphase layer at the electrode/electrolyte interface. Here, a magnesium model electrolyte based on magnesium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Mg(TFSI)2) and MgCl2 with a borohydride as additive, dissolved in dimethoxyethane (DME), was used to investigate the initial galvanostatic plating and stripping cycles operando using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (EQCM‐D). We show that side reactions lead to the formation of an interphase of irreversibly deposited Mg during the initial cycles. EQCM‐D based hydrodynamic spectroscopy reveals the growth of a porous layer during Mg stripping. After the first cycles, the interphase layer is in a dynamic equilibrium between the formation of the layer and its dissolution, resulting in a stable thickness upon further cycling. This study provides operando information of the interphase formation, its changes during cycling and the dynamic behavior, helping to rationally develop future electrolytes and electrode/electrolyte interfaces and interphases.

Abstract:Electrolytes and the associated interphases constitute the critical components to support the emerging battery chemistries that promise tantalizing energy but involve drastic phase and structure complications. Designing better electrolytes and interphases holds the key to the success of these batteries. As the only component that interfaces with every other component in the device, an electrolyte must satisfy multiple criteria simultaneously. These include transporting ions while insulating electrons between the electrodes and maintaining stability against electrodes of extreme chemical natures: the strongly oxidative cathode and the strongly reductive anode. In most advanced batteries, the two electrodes operate at potentials far beyond the thermodynamic stability limits of electrolytes, so the stability therein has to be realized kinetically through an interphase formed from the sacrificial reactions between electrolyte and electrodes.

Abstract:Compared with lithium, magnesium shows a low propensity toward dendritic deposition due to its low surface self-diffusion barriers. However, due to the intrinsic surface roughness of the metal and the nonuniformity of the formed solid–electrolyte interphase, uneven deposition of Mg still happens, which brings about high local current density and continuous proliferation of the interphase, greatly exacerbating the passivation. Unfortunately, little attention has been paid to the deposition uniformity and the interfacial stability of Mg metal anodes, which result in a potential penalty. Herein, we modify the electrolyte with cathodically stable cations to guide smooth deposition via an electrostatic shielding strategy. The cations adsorbed on the initial protuberances effectively homogenize the charge flux by repulsing the incoming Mg<sup>2+</sup> away from the tips. Importantly, we prove the lateral growth can benefit the interphase stability and electrochemical reversibility.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) metal anodes are highly regarded as one of ideal substitutes for lithium (Li) metal anodes owing to their exceptional volumetric capacity, remarkable safety property, and abundant crustal reserves. However, the development of Mg batteries is severely impeded by the limited availability of electrolyte types, particularly non-nucleophilic ones. Mg(TFSI)2-based electrolyte is a recently discovered type of electrolyte which is non-nucleophilic, easily prepared, and highly stable. Nevertheless, due to its challenging de-solvation process and unexpected passivation interlayers, it is not performing as well electrochemically and requires effective modification. Here, organic amine dihydrochlorides (NCxN·2HCl) are selected as additives to Mg(TFSI)2-based electrolytes to regulate solvation structure and electrode interlayer synchronously. It helps rearrange the solvation sheath of Mg2+ and forms a Mg2+-permeable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the surface of anode, facilitating the kinetic. Amine cations could also guide uniform Mg2+ deposition through electrostatic shielding effects. After experiments and simulations, ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (NCCN·2HCl) stands out, contributing to a significantly reduced overpotential (< 0.2 V), realizing about 100% coulombic efficiency and stable long-term full cell cycling for an impressive 2400 cycles.

Abstract:Interface chemistry has always been a key issue for various batteries owing to its significant effect on electrochemical performance. This minireview offers a thorough summary of cathode‐electrolyte interfacial chemistry in rechargeable magnesium batteries, including the representative interfacial phenomena, the detailed desolvation process in various electrolytes, the compatibility between cathode and electrolytes, and the perspectives on favorable interphase construction. Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have garnered significant attention due to their potential to provide high energy density, utilize earth‐abundant raw materials, and employ metal anode safely. Currently, the lack of applicable cathode materials has become one of the bottleneck issues for fully exploiting the technological advantages of RMBs. Recent studies on Mg cathodes reveal divergent storage performance depending on the electrolyte formulation, posing interfacial issues as a previously overlooked challenge. This minireview begins with an introduction of representative cathode‐electrolyte interfacial phenomena in RMBs, elaborating on the unique solvation behavior of Mg2+, which lays the foundation for interfacial chemistries. It is followed by presenting recently developed strategies targeting the promotion of Mg2+ desolvation in the electrolyte and alternative cointercalation approaches to circumvent the desolvation step. In addition, efforts to enhance the cathode‐electrolyte compatibility via electrolyte development and interfacial engineering are highlighted. Based on the abovementioned discussions, this minireview finally puts forward perspectives and challenges on the establishment of a stable interface and fast interfacial chemistry for RMBs.

Abstract:Metallic Mg is an ideal anode material for rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries (RMBs) due to its high volumetric energy density, low safety concern, two-electron redox as well as the large abundance and environmental friendliness of magnesium element. However, challenges such as interfacial passivation, formation of dendrites, and large volume changes of electrode hinder the development and practical application of Mg metal anode. To address these issues, many modification strategies have been proposed in the past several years, such as modifying liquid electrolytes, designing artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), constructing interfacial alloy layer, fabricating 3D scaffolds, utilizing solid electrolytes, developing advanced characterization methods, and deepening theoretical study. Here a detail review is presented to summary and analyze these modification strategies. Meanwhile, some perspectives and outlooks are put forward. This review can inspire related researchers and promote the application of Mg metal anode in rechargeable Mg batteries.

Abstract:The growing interest in rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) stems from the demands for energy storage technologies with safety, sustainability, and high energy density. However, the ambiguous mechanism of the Mg metal anode during the electrochemical and manufacturing processes severely impedes the pursuit of superior performance. Those commonly overlooked bottlenecks in pure Mg or Mg alloy metal anodes should be emphasized and deserve more consideration. In this Review, a brand-new perspective is emerging to reveal the opportunity for overcoming the long-standing obstacles hindering the development of RMBs. Herein, we comprehensively discuss the recent efforts to relieve the interfacial incompatibility between Mg metal anodes and electrolytes, including the pursuit of new electrolyte, interfacial modification, mechanism exploration, etc. Additionally, we put forth an unconventional research direction to promote the development of RMBs, namely exploring Mg metal anodes in terms of their electrochemical and mechanical properties. In closing, our proposals for addressing the key factors and intractable issues with Mg metal anode are brought forward.

Abstract:Magnesium redox chemistry is a very appealing "beyond Li ion chemistry" for realizing high energy density batteries due to the high capacity, low reduction potential, and most importantly, highly reversible and dendrite-free Mg metal anode. However, the progress of rechargeable Mg batteries has been greatly hindered by shortage of electrolytes with wide stability window, high ionic conductivity, and good compatibility with cathode materials. Unlike solid electrolyte interphase on Li metal anode, surface film formed by electrolyte decomposition in Mg batteries was considered to block Mg ion transport and passivate Mg electrode. For this reason, the attention of the community has been mainly focusing on surface layer free electrolytes, while reductively unstable salts/solvents are barely considered, despite many of them possessing all the necessary properties for good electrolytes. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that the surface film formed by electrolyte decomposition can function as a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Using Mg/S chemistry as a model system, the SEI formation mechanism on Mg metal anode was thoroughly examined using electrochemical methods and surface chemistry characterization techniques such as EDX and XPS. On the basis of these results, a comprehensive view of the Mg/electrolyte interface that unifies both the SEI mechanism and the passivation layer mechanism is proposed. This new picture of surface layer on Mg metal anode in Mg batteries not only revolutionizes current understanding of Mg/electrolyte interface but also opens new avenues for electrolyte development by uncovering the potential of those reductively unstable candidates through interface design.

Abstract:A non‐passsivating and chlorine‐free Mg(CF3SO3)2‐based electrolyte with 2‐methoxyethylamine (MOEA) is designed via tailoring solvation and interface chemistry. The MOEA features suppressed side reactions and accelerated Mg2+ transportation with competing desolvation at the interfacial layer of anode/cathode. This work emphasizes the collocation strategy of magnesium salts and solvents as well as cationic/anionic solvation in the investigation of rechargeable magnesium batteries. Non‐passivating and chlorine‐free electrolytes are crucial for making rechargeable magnesium batteries practically feasible. Rational design of a brand‐new electrolyte should balance both Mg salt and solvent considering that the interfacial reactions occurring at electrolyte/electrode interface involve with ion solvation structure. Herein, nitrogenous 2‐methoxyethylamine (MOEA) is employed as co‐solvent to regulate the coordination behavior of cations/anions in Mg(CF3SO3)2‐G2 electrolyte after a series of screenings, which enables significantly ameliorated physiochemical properties. In‐depth insight on the mechanism of MOEA participating in the solvation structure formation and interfacial reactions is deduced via density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The decompositions of MOEA‐tailored cationic/anionic complexes shield Mg anode and Mo6S8 cathode with Mg3N2 and CxNy‐rich layers, respectively, which enable to suppress side reaction and accelerate Mg2+ transportation with competing desolvation at the interfacial layer. All the merits endow remarkable performances of symmetric/asymmetric cells with ultralong‐cycle lives over 5000 h and a remarkable average Coulombic efficiency of 98.3% after 8200 cycles (≈11 months), respectively. Abstract:Magnesium-sulfur (Mg-S) batteries are highly attractive because of their high theoretical energy density, low cost and safety features. However, severe capacity fading issues limit their development, which are greatly associated with reaction processes at electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Herein, we systematically studied the interfacial processes of Mg deposition/stripping in ether-based electrolytes at nanoscale by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). It can be directly observed the initial nucleation of bowl-like structure and deposition of crystallized Mg upon charge in tetraglyme (TEG) - based electrolyte, followed with uniform stripping process upon discharge. In contrast, the initial nucleation of bowl-like structure, fast stack of nanoparticles (NPs) and deposition of crystallized Mg upon charge can be observed in diglyme (DEG) - based electrolyte, followed with nonuniform stripping process upon discharge. Combined with in situ optical imaging, former system shows better reversibility upon cycle. The present results reveal a direct insight into the structure-reactivity correlation at anode/electrolyte interfaces, which provides deep understanding of the interfacial mechanism to guide the design and development of the high-energy Mg-S batteries.
