Abstract:As Yan Lianke explains in his poetological volume Discovering Fiction (Faxian xiaoshuo), mythorealism is a way of writing that aims at making an irrational reality accessible again by unveiling its “inner truth” and “inner causality.” Mythorealist works, like magical realist writing, convey an alternative conception of history, marked by frequent use of legends, myths, folklore—in short, what is usually called “the imaginary” as opposed to “the real.” Embracing this dichotomy, magical realism, in the vein of what Eugene Arva calls “traumatic imagination,” creates new meaning for historical events by raising the imaginary and the real to the same ontological level. Yan, in contrast, claims that mythorealism goes one step further, aspiring to fuse the two ontological states, striving to arrive at a new understanding of historical truths. By comparing the defining aspects of both magical realism and mythorealism, this chapter focuses not only on analyzing two of Yan's novels, The Explosion Chronicles and The Four Books, and their respective representation of history but also aims to answer the question of whether mythorealism is merely a local adaptation of magical realism or instead should be seen as a new literary mode.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the problem of interaction between the genres of Eastern and Western literature, which is an important part of modern literary criticism. In this paper, the interaction of genres is considered on the basis of Mo Yan’s novel “The Republic of Wine” (1992), translated into Russian in 2012 by I. Egorov. The work of the modern Chinese writer is studied in the aspect of “hallucinatory realism”, for its development the author was awarded the Nobel Prize (2012). The article studies the influence of classical Chinese literature genres and philosophy and Western literature on modern Chinese literature, based on the novel “The Republic of Wine” by Mo Yan. The novel of the Chinese writer is analyzed in the context of the world literary process. The article discusses the transformation of motifs and characters of Chinese classical literature in the novel by a modern Chinese author. The main characters of the novel are studied in relation to the plot-forming function they perform, the main of them is the detective one. The plot of the detective story is considered in relation to the satirical tradition. The article presents Mo Yan’s view of the traditions, mentality and lifestyle of the Chinese people. The purpose of the work is to determine the main aspects of the influence of Chinese and Western literature on the work of Mo Yan “The Republic of Wine”. As a result of the study, we describe the plot motifs and images of classical Chinese and Western novels, the ideological principles of Chinese philosophy, which are embodied in Mo Yan’s novel “The Republic of Wine”.

Abstract:Mo Yan is an important writer in the modern period, whose writing broke through the traditional criterion of the contemporary literature, and had revolutionary significance. His nouvelle Red Broomcorn have been looked as the ending of “seeking root literature”, as well as vital origin and magnum opus of “neo-historical novel”. The method of depiction in Red Broomcorn had close relations with the theory discussing about the complicacy of character at that time. And the novel reflects the main change of the contemporary type theory, collapse of socialism-realism literature criteria. The tideway of Red Broomcorn and “neo-historical novel” have the obvious dialogic relations with the powerful criterion of “revolutionary historical theme” novel such as Flag Chart in the 1950s. The emotional and mazy history embodies the subversion and rewriting to the novel, whose topic is about history of revolution. At the same time, the reading of Red Broomcorn and the naming and explanation of “neo-historical novel ” phenomena is also a changing process of constant interpretation.

Abstract:Since the 1980s, the author of Hundred Years of Solitude has become a great idol and a constant source of the "anxiety of influence" (as phrased by Harold Bloom) for an entire generation of Chinese writers, including Jia Pingwa, Yu Hua, Su Tong, Yan Lianke, Ma Yuan and Mo Yan. The paper proposes a parallel reading between Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mo Yan, the Chinese Nobel laureate, in order to demonstrate that the Latin American magical realism and its adventure in China has formed part of Chinese contemporary literature history. Not only has the magical realism revived the memory of these Chinese writers and pushed them to adopt a new attitude regarding their own history, but it has also shown them a way of writing new novels.

Abstract:The authors of this article analyze Russian translations of non-translatable linguistic signs in the works of Chinese writer Mo Yan, prize laureate of the Nobel Prize in 2012. In his works, the writer amply uses culturally-bound words and phrases as well as folklore and tales meaningful for Chinese material, social and spiritual culture. Some of them are cultural constants traditionally associated with emotional, axiological and aesthetic values. Mo Yan’s style includes common language, idioms, even swear words alongside vernacular parables and ditties. As a whole, his style itself is the embodiment of Chinese common culture, which presents a seemingly insoluble task for translators — how to translate the non-translatable, to recreate in Russian not just the style but the culture itself. The authors explore both the translators’ solutions and inevitable shifts and losses determined in the process of interaction between the two very different languages and cultures. Particular attention is paid to translators’ solutions for the symbolic functions of Chinese personal names. In addition, complications connected with the transfer of Chinese everyday realia, customs and traditions that appear as important components in the structure of images and contents of Mo Yan’s works are considered. An attempt is made to reconstruct some important components of the intercultural area that emerges in the course of translation from Chinese into Russian.

Abstract:Originating in Latin America in the 1950s, magic realism has become a literary trend because of its artistic and aesthetic values. World-renowned writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Toni Morrison, and Mo Yan have published a series of literary masterpieces embedded with magical realistic elements, which draw the attention of many literary critics. This thesis uses text analysis and comparative study as research methods and examines the magical realistic elements in Mo Yan and Toni Morrison’s representative works Beloved and Big Breasts & Wide Hips. The discussion focuses on similarities and differences from the perspective of magic and reality, magic narrative techniques, magic-realistic symbols, as well as mythological archetypes and sacred scripture in those two novels. Based on this, I find that hallucinatory realism is a better term in further magical realism studies because it shows magic realism’s acceptance and transmission in China.

Abstract:This work proposes to define the term and the connotations of magical realism from the perspective of the Chinese literary circle since the eighties; and based on the reading of this foreign literary phenomenon will explore the recreation of magical realism by Chinese writers through a series of general and specific approaches, to be specified, of Jia Pingwa, Tashi Dawa and Mo Yan; in this way, we will review both the development of trends in Chinese literature at the end of the 20th century and the attributes assigned to it, and at the same time we will reflect on the causes and limitations of this development model, which as a whole presents the contemporary reality of China linked to its national democratic revolution.

Abstract:Mo Yan is a famous Chinese writer. He has become the first Chinese to win the Nobel Prize in literature. Frog is one of Mo Yan's masterpieces. His works were strongly influenced by magical realism and told the legend which took place in Gaomi, Shandong Province, during the Cultural Revolution and the early years of reform and opening up. Different countries have different cultural formation processes, which have led to creating their culture-loaded words. Culture-loaded words refer to the words, phrases, and idioms used to signify objects peculiar to specific cultures. These culture-loaded words and expressions are the direct reflections of the unique features of Chinese culture. The translator needs to avoid errors and omissions in translation, especially when translating cultural information. Based on domestication and foreignization translation strategies, this article takes Howard Goldblatt's English translation of Mo Yan's Frog as the research object to explore the translation and effect of cultural-loaded words in the novel. The translator uses foreignization and domestication strategies to explain and convey these Chinese characteristics. It achieves faithfulness to the original text and flexibly handles culture-loaded words with Chinese characteristics, ensuring the attractiveness and affinity of the translated text. The research on the English translation of the Chinese culture-loaded words in the novel is helpful for foreign readers to understand and accept the culture with Chinese characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract Mo Yan, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012, has published many new works of different genres since 2017, such as novels, poems, dramas, operas and even sketch stories, attracting a lot of attention and discussion. Although these new works are numerous, they are still characterized by exploration and transition. There is a phenomenon of “unfinalizability” in these new novels, which is characteristic of Mo Yan’s literary writings, such as the recurrence of the literary figure “Mo Yan”. Mo Yan has adopted many writing techniques in his new works to strengthen their concern and criticism of reality, such as reflecting society through focusing on individuals, close-up simple descriptions, typification of contemporary group mentality and a new “hit acupoint” illustration style. Moreover, his new novels present literary, realistic and even philosophical “uncertainty” through a method of life intuition. However, when we analyze Mo Yan’s new works in his whole writing lineage, we will realize the author’s loyalty to reality and art, and his works’ foreseeing power unconsciously becomes evident.

Abstract:Mo Yan's works present the Chinese local culture, which have a profound cultural significance and have had a far-reaching impact on the international scale. However, for many English-speaking readers, some of the words in Mo Yan's works with a special Chinese local culture are difficult and complex to understand. Because of this, an inaccurate translation may cause readers to be biased. This article uses the Skopos Theory as a guideline and takes Howard Goldblatt's English translation as examples to analyse the translation of local culture in several of Mo Yan's masterpieces, so as to achieve the purpose of spreading local culture in translation. The study found that most of Howard Goldblatt's translations of the words related to local culture in Mo Yan's works conformed to the Skopos Theory, appropriately combining Chinese local culture with western culture to promote readers' understanding and provide an effective way for foreign readers to understand Chinese local culture.

Abstract:Although the two winners of the Nobelprize for literature,Mo Yan and Herta Müller seem to be totally contrasting authors,but their works show some kind of significant commonness: Both of them create a literary space of the countryside out of their rural experiences in the childhood.This article argues that this commonness refers to their historical critical reflexion about the power struckture of an authoritative state and that they share a strong tendence to expose the sufferings of their people by choosing an individual surrealistical style which may make them quite different from each other.And the article tries to check this issue in the relationship with the unique context of the literary tradition in Germany and China in the twentieth Century.With this as background,one can see how both authors break the romantic and revolutionary narration of the land and reach a new level of the rural literature after G.Márquez and W.C.Faulkner as a special form of worldliterature.

Abstract:In his article "Luo's Ethical Experience of Growth in Mo Yan's Pow!" Zhenzhao Nie examines the protagonist's experience of self-discovery in the process of natural to ethical choice. Nie's analysis of the novel rests on the theoretical framework "ethical literary criticism" he developed. In the novel Luo's life is narrated in retrospect when he is attempting to become the disciple of a monk and although Luo does not find what he is searching for in religion, he arrives at a new stage in his life which is based on ethical principles. The young Luo is unable to make ethical choices as his decisions stem from his "animal factor." His craving of meat is a metaphor of the novel for materialism. Towards the end of the narrative, Luo's attempts at firing mortar shells are a symbolic gesture of breaking away from the past and of beginning a new life.

Abstract:The subject of this research is the novel by the contemporary author Evgenia Nekrasova “Kalechina-Malechina”. The novel contains the elements of fantasy and mysticism, which can either have purely rational, materialistic explanation or irrational – surrealistic. Therefore, the composition is viewed through the prism of synthesis of the elements of magical, irrational and familiar everyday reality. Such approach allows attributing the novel to “magic realism”, which is interpreted not as a school or direction, but a literary method used by multiple authors of various national literatures. The key characteristics of the methods as follows: system of the two worlds, binary chronotope, duplicity, and mythological implication. The complex methodological approach includes intertextual analysis and mythopoetic commentary. The conducted analysis allowed determining the peculiarities of structuring artistic world in the novel; principles of creating chronotope and conflicts between individual and the society; principles of narrative structure; and motifs. The novel by E. Nekrasova “Kalechina-Malechina” represents an example of the literary method of magic realism, which manifests on the level of system of the two worlds and development of the chronotope. Narrative structure is built on the synthesis of child’s worldview of the heroine and the author’s vision, which leads to an ambivalent perception of the world. The article provides a detailed overview of the storyline, which main theme is the initiation of the main heroine into the adult life assisted by a magical helper – Kikimora.

Abstract:The article outlines the vectors of methodological research of magical realism and identifies the differential features of this literary phenomenon in the theoretical discourse of German literary criticism. The author of the article focuses on the ambivalence of German magical realism, caused by the combination in magical realist texts of two inherently opposite ways of depicting reality – realistic and irreal. In magical realist texts, the magical appeal of reality is emphasized, when the objects of reality only hint at the existence of another world beyond it, acquiring a numinous aureole in the aesthetic focus of realism. The specificity of magical realism lies in its heterogeneity, and therefore requires the appropriate selection of methodological tools that would open the way to the world of magical realist texts, which in many cases has a multi-level structure with polysemantic content. Special attention within the context of the conceptualization of magical realism is paid to the semiotic model of “double conditioning” by A. Koschorke and the concept of “ruderal space” by B. Schaefer. In conclusion, the author emphasizes that magical realism demonstrates the synergistic effect of the emergence of a certain new artistic space with hidden deep meanings and elliptical structures that form the semantic polyphony of the text with a variable multiplicity of meanings. Through liminality and transgression, the semantic potential of the magical is activated, aimed at overcoming the boundary between the immanent and transcendent worlds.

Abstract:Usually, the novel is described as a literary genre that takes "characters" as the center and reflects the social life through the description of the complete story plot and specific environment, or a literary genre that reflects the social life through the expansion of the plot and the rendering of the environment. Only by understanding the characters created by the author and their intention can we further analyze the theme of the novel. A novel Frog describes a group of people who lived in Gaomi, Shandong Province with a different life consciousness and life attitude toward the family planning policy. The article applied the theory of Flat and Round Character proposed by E. M. Förster and follows qualitative descriptive method proposed by Creswell (2003), an effective model that occurs in a natural setting that enables the researcher to develop a level of detail from being highly involved in the actual experiences, attempts to explore the various key characteristics in the characterization and narration of the novel which indicate how and why these two characters were formed in this manner and how the writing style of the author has developed these characters into becoming flat and round characters. The result of the analysis shows that flat characters in a novel Frog are more pointed than this group of indifferent and numb male characters. Their personalities are distinct and clear at a glance, and there is no change in the entire novel, so they are easy to identify. While, flat characters are often used by authors to convey a fixed and single value, or as a container for advanced social ideas.
The Research of Culture-bounded Terms in the English Translation of Red Sorghum from the Perspective of Relevance Theory

Abstract:Winning of the Nobel Prize for Literature gave Mo Yan an international repute. And the study of Howard Goldblatts translation of Mos work has become a trend. Previous studies have already taken various of perspectives to research Goldblatts translation texts, focusing on his translation strategies and the effects in the western world. As Red Sorghum is among the most popular novels of Mo Yan in the western world, this essay will take it as the research material to reveal Goldblatts translation strategy of Explicitation from the perspective of the Relevance Theory, and thus to conclude a feasible approach for translators to disseminate Chinese literature and culture to be seen and heard by the world. It creatively combines Explicitation in stylistics and the Relevance Theory to categorize the effects of the translation in three types: add dramatic effects, enhance the tone and make the words more vivid. The findings indicate that Explicitation is feature of Goldblatts translation work and it does take positive effects on the dissemination of Chinese culture, providing the target readers the highest contextual effect with the lowest processing efforts.

Abstract:This study examines the legal dilemma of surrogacy in the novel Frog by the Nobel prize winner Mo Yan, which was written in the context of China's past one-child policy. This study offers a tri-tier exploration of how surrogacy led to conflicts and tensions in Frog: first, it traces how the intended parents' demand for surrogacy developed under the one-child policy in China while clarifying the application of "the principle of public order"; second, it explores the predicament of the surrogate mother Chen Mei regarding the violation of her rights and dignity, and delves into the interpretation of "the principle of human dignity"; third, it focuses on the custody dispute between the surrogate mother and the intended parents to explore the controversies over the concept of parentage in surrogacy and consider the principle of "best interest of the child." This study concludes that despite all the legal and ethical controversies, the spirit of law demands a response to the growing practice of surrogacy and an extension of our exploration of legal principles.
