Abstract:This research aims to study the suitability of bias adjustment models for radar-estimated surface rainfall in the central region of Thailand using the Phitsanulok radar, operating in the c-band frequency system. The study is to reduce the mean field bias (MFB) of daily rainfall using two Ensemble Machine Learning (ML) models of Random Forest (RF) and Gradient Boosting Regressor (GBR). Four major rainfall events in the year 2018 during the monsoon season in Thailand, which caused flood over the central area of Thailand, were selected for analysis. Alongside radar data, rainfall data from 45 ground-based rain gauges were utilized. The study applied three types of ZR relationships: Marshall-Palmer (MP), Rosenfeld tropical (RF), and Summer deep convection (SC), to convert radar reflectivity to radar-estimated rainfall. The results indicated that both Ensemble ML models could effectively adjust high-intensity rainfall. The obtained MFB statistics showed that RF and GBR could reduce bias up to 171.88% and 177.03%, respectively, whereas the threshold for daily rainfall was set above 20 mm. Since these findings demonstrate promising trends for the practical application of ML models in bias adjustment, this method can be applied to the existing radar operation of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) to improve the process of radar data management across Thailand.
