Abstract:Wild environments and wildlife can be reservoirs of pathogens and antibiotic resistance. Various studies have reported the presence of zoonotic bacteria, resistant strains, and genetic elements that determine antibiotic resistance in wild animals, especially near urban centers or agricultural and zootechnical activities. The purpose of this study was the analysis, by cultural and molecular methods, of bacteria isolated from wild animals in Sicily, Italy, regarding their susceptibility profile to antibiotics and the presence of antibiotic resistance genes. Bacteriological analyses were conducted on 368 wild animals, leading to the isolation of 222 bacterial strains identified by biochemical tests and 16S rRNA sequencing. The most isolated species was Escherichia coli, followed by Clostridium perfringens and Citrobacter freundii. Antibiograms and the determination of resistance genes showed a reduced spread of bacteria carrying antibiotic resistance among wild animals in Sicily. However, since several wild animals are becoming increasingly close to residential areas, it is important to monitor their health status and to perform microbiological analyses following a One Health approach.

Abstract:Native ants have long been considered for their potential to suppress the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), a highly invasive and destructive species. However, the knowledge in this field is limited to behavioral observations of a few related native ants. In this study, by setting up a series of ant combinations of three native ants, i.e., Monomorium chinense Santschi, the robust crazy ant Nylanderia bourbonica Forel, and Iridomyrmex anceps Roger, with S. invicta, we observed the aggression levels and mortality rates. Using baited vials, we also investigated the abundance of native ants in four types of habitats in Eastern China that are preferred by S. invicta (woodland, green belts on roadsides, grassland, and farmland), as well as their seasonal abundance when co-existing with S. invicta and their spatial distribution before and after control of S. invicta. We found that M. chinense and N. bourbonica show a degree of aggression towards S. invicta and can kill substantial proportions of S. invicta under laboratory conditions, but I. anceps does not. Both M. chinense and N. bourbonica can occur in each type of habitat investigated and are more abundant in green belts (particularly lawns with turf) and grasslands relative to other habitats. In grasslands with S. invicta, M. chinense maintained a low density before early July; however, its abundance increased thereafter and reached a peak in September. N. bourbonica also had a low density early in the season and increased steadily from April. Its abundance began to decrease substantially from November. In grasslands invaded by S. invicta, both M. chinense and N. bourbonica were restricted to sites close to the margins before S. invicta was controlled; however, they spread to a larger range within a few weeks after control of S. invicta. In conclusion, M. chinense and N. bourbonica have the potential to suppress S. invicta invasion in habitats that are abundant with these two native ants.

Abstract:Aim Pathogens can play an important role in biological invasions. Introduced populations may be particularly vulnerable to pathogens due to factors such as low genetic diversity and high population density. However, introduced populations that escape their natural pathogens may reallocate resources away from immunity and towards growth and reproduction. Interestingly, introduced ants have been suggested to have increased tolerance to new pathogens, contributing to their success as introduced species. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether introduced Argentine ant populations harbour different viral loads compared to native populations and if these differences were related to immunity‐related gene expression. Location The study was conducted across the native range of Argentine ants in Argentina and four introduced regions in California, France, Australia and New Zealand. Methods We used RT‐qPCR to quantify viral loads and gene expression in the ants. We analysed 15 different potentially pathogenic viruses across the Argentine ant's native and introduced ranges. Results We found that five viruses, LhuPcV1, LhuPiLV1, LhuCV1, Kashmir Bee virus and LHUV‐1, presented high loads in Argentine ants compared to the other viruses we screened. We found a significant effect of range on viral infections: high viral loads were commonly found in ants from introduced populations, which also exhibited increased immune gene expression. We found highly significant correlations between viral loads and expression of immune and metabolic genes. However, these associations were not fully consistent across the studied regions, indicating the complexity of eco‐immunological phenomena. Main Conclusions Our results suggest that introduced Argentine ant populations host different viral communities compared to native populations and that these differences are correlated with changes in immunity‐related gene expression. The study highlights the complex role of pathogens in biological invasions and the importance of considering eco‐immunological factors when assessing the impact of introduced species.

Abstract:The agricultural impacts of the Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren 1972, have been well studied in North America, but have received less emphasis in Asia where the species was first detected in the early 2000's. Simultaneously, with urbanization rapidly expanding in Asia, S. invicta impacts on the socio-economic benefits of urban farming are to this point unknown. Our study focuses on establishing a baseline on the geographic distribution of the S. invicta spread in Hong Kong urban agroecosystems and its potential impacts on native ant communities and farmers through a series of field surveys and interviews. Our results show that in 15 years, S. invicta has invaded half of the Hong Kong urban agroecosystems, with infestation levels slightly varying in farming practices (organic vs. traditional) but greatly among the different types of cultures. Ecologically, the presence of S. invicta and its increased abundance were associated with a decrease in ant community species richness and evenness. Economically, the farmers' perception indicated that S. invicta could have impacts on crops production ranging from 10% to 80%, as well as important public health issues associated to indirect economic costs due to the aggressive stinging and consequences on other educational activities. Finally, all control methods used were mainly inefficient and maladjusted to these environments. With dense infested farm locations and current management, S. invicta prevalence and its cost are expected to expand. This prospective situation requests the development of professional guidance and management plans to impede S. invicta spread and rising impacts.

Abstract:The number of known alien ant species throughout Europe has been steadily increasing during the last few decades and Italy has been no exception, with four new taxa reported in the last five years. Here, we document new data on the Asian needle ant Brachyponera chinensis (Emery, 1895), an invasive alien species whose first establishment in Europe was detected in the southern Italian city of Naples in 2022 and which has now been found near Lake Como in northern Italy, representing the second European record, about 730 km distant from the first. Furthermore, we report for the first time the presence of Nylanderia vividula (Nylander, 1846) in the country, based on specimens collected both in Rome and near Lake Como. This is at least the second Nylanderia species established in the country after N. jaegerskioeldi, first reported in 2018. Unlike B. chinensis, N. vividula is not considered an ecological and health threat in the invaded range and is already known to occur in several other European countries. While only a few introduced ants in Europe are considered serious ecological, economic or health threats, the increasing circulation of several alien species and the poor ability to swiftly track their movements and detect their establishment can render management very difficult.

Abstract:The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), is of great concern because of its destructive nature to endemic wildlife, livestock, and people. Various methods for managing this pest are currently being developed, including the use of viruses as biological control agents. In this study, the effectiveness of the Solenopsis invicta virus (SINV-1), (a positive sense, single-stranded RNA virus in the Dicistroviridae family (Genus: Aparavirus) which only infects the Genus Solenopsis) as an effective biological control agent against S. invicta infestation in combination with commonly used insecticides was investigated. Surprisingly, ants treated with the virus experienced significantly greater survival rates than non-infected but chemically treated individuals. SINV-1 might provide some unidentified benefit to aid individual ant survival, however at this point, without fully understanding the virus-ant interaction, the use of SINV-1 as a biological control agent requires further investigation.

Abstract:Eradication of invasive alien species (IAS) is often proposed to restore invaded ecosystems, with information on subsequent ecosystem recovery key to conservation policies. Although ants perform major ecological functions in the ecosystem, their response to IAS eradication has received relatively little monitoring. This study investigated ant response to iceplant ( Carpobrotus spp.) and black rat ( Rattus rattus ) eradications on the small Mediterranean island of Bagaud (Var, France). Ant communities were monitored over a ten-year period, including two years before eradications, at six different sites: two invaded by iceplants, two under high rat pressure, and two native vegetation sites without intervention. We found inter-annual variations in ant communities but no before-after eradication trend at both native vegetation and rat eradication sites. However, there was a clear increase in ant species richness and abundance score after the iceplant eradication. A core of common Mediterranean species, including Pheidole pallidula , Messor bouvieri, and Plagiolepis pygmaea , increased their foraging activity after the removal. As xerophilous and thermophilous species they would benefit from the return of native vegetation with possibly warmer and dryer microclimatic conditions, but also from habitat and resource diversification. The trend was even stronger on the denser and thicker iceplant eradication patch. Our results emphasize the relevance of implementing ant monitoring to evaluate the effectiveness of such restoration and conservation strategies.

The role of permanent grasslands on ant community structure: Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) as ecological indicators in the agro-ecosystems of the Taro River Regional Park (Italy) 1

Abstract:Environmental stress, also associated with human land-use, induces a response in ecological indicators that can be measured and used to develop an effective land management policy. There are various reasons to usually exclude terrestrial invertebrates from land monitoring and assessment programmes. Ants are an exception and they are routinely used for biological monitoring in many Australian ecosystems. However, the value of ants as ecological indicators has been comparatively poorly studied in the Palaearctic region. This research is one of the first attempts to verify whether ants are eligible to become efficient ecological indicators in typical Mediterranean agro-ecosystems. The area of investigation has been selected in the Fluvial Regional Park of Taro River (Parma, Northern Italy). Since the reserve is located in the region that produces Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, park management guidelines tend to match principles of environmental protection with human demands. In this framework, the fluvial park has developed a project for the preservation of Permanent Grasslands that are considered a valid alternative to monocultures for the production of cow fodder. In this work, sampling with pitfall traps was used to compare the presence and distribution of ant-fauna between Permanent Grasslands and Lucerne Monocultures. The results showed that the degree of invasiveness of agricultural practice has a meaningful impact on ant species composition: the reduction of environmental stress and disturbance produces variations in the ant community structure promoting especially Lasius niger (LINNAEUS, 1758). On the contrary, on such sites Messor cf. structor (LATREILLE, 1798) is present to a lesser extent. This research suggests that the study of ant communities is a promising method to evaluate the influence of different land management policies also in the agro-ecosystems of the Taro River Regional Park.

Abstract:Invasive alien species pose severe threats to global biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and socio-economic values, particularly in coastal and marine ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate the trophic interactions between alien species and native fauna in a Mediterranean coastal ecosystem. Notably, our research focused on the presence and ecological roles of the invasive Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) and the brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) within the Vendicari Nature Reserve (VNR), a protected area on the southeastern coast of Sicily, Italy. Field observations, specimen collection, and interviews with local fishermen were conducted to assess the presence, distribution, and feeding habits of these species. The results revealed significant temporal shifts in the diet of C. sapidus, with a clear decrease in predation on the alien Penaeus aztecus (first observed in the VNR) over the study months. The presence of C. sapidus in the fishing area around the reserve has been detected for many years, while P. aztecus appears to have recently colonized the area. Additionally, photographic evidence documented the predation of C. sapidus by Octopus vulgaris, highlighting a potential adaptive feeding behavior by the common octopus in response to the abundance of this invasive crab. The integration of scientific research, local ecological knowledge, and community participation is essential for mitigating the impacts of biological invasions and preserving the biodiversity and ecological integrity of natural ecosystems.

Abstract:Invasive species represent a severe threat for ecosystem health worldwide. With increasing global trade and ongoing climate change, monitoring non-native species and their hotspots of potential spread is becoming increasingly important. Invasive ants are one of the most problematic groups of organisms costing billions of dollars a year globally to control. Therefore, emerging ant invasions require more focused engagement to assess their extent, and effective measures to prevent the spread of non-native invasive species can be time consuming and expensive to implement. In addition to places with high commercial traffic, greenhouses are potential hotspots for non-native species as they can be entry points for invasions. However, the role of greenhouses in ant invasions is still understudied. In this study, an extensive survey of greenhouses in zoos and botanical gardens of Hungary was conducted to search for non-native ant species. The five species found in the surveys and an additional two known from Hungary were then screened for their risk of invasiveness in the country under both current and predicted climate conditions. Three species were found to pose a considerable conservation and economic risk for Hungary, and one is already present in the wild. Increased monitoring of greenhouses and other heated premises for the presence of non-native species and targeted chemical eradication are needed to prevent their spread. The risk screening method employed in this study can be applied to a wide range of terrestrial animal taxa, thereby providing a basis for developing more effective prevention and control strategies against invasive species.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren is one of the world's most successful and destructive invasive ant species. In mainland China, fast, monthly, and annual pest reports have been established since 2010. The distribution of S. invicta under climate change in China was predicted using MaxEnt modeling in combination with comprehensive surveillance data and 56 environmental factors. RESULTS Fast and monthly reports revealed that S. invicta had spread to new territories almost every year. The transportation of seedlings and deployment of turfgrass were the major artificial transmission pathways. Annual reports indicated that control efforts had effectively reduced its occurrence areas and severity degree and retrieved the economic loss caused by S. invicta. The MaxEnt model predicted that S. invicta would expand to 23 provinces in China under climate change. The moisture variables were the key factors affecting the distribution of this pest. CONCLUSION Based on the theoretical reference framework of this research, China proposed the first-ever integrated tactics against a single pest jointly by nine ministries, which include clarifying responsibilities, cutting off transmission pathways, strengthening surveillance, declaring pest distributions, and holding control operations. Practical efforts and measures combating the devastating S. invicta may shed light on its management and other invasive species worldwide. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In the last decades, the colonization of Mediterranean Europe and of other temperate regions by Aedes albopictus created an unprecedented nuisance problem in highly infested areas and new public health threats due to the vector competence of the species. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) and the Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT) are insecticide-free mosquito-control methods, relying on mass release of irradiated/manipulated males, able to complement existing and only partially effective control tools. The validation of these approaches in the field requires appropriate experimental settings, possibly isolated to avoid mosquito immigration from other infested areas, and preliminary ecological and entomological data. We carried out a 4-year study in the island of Procida (Gulf of Naples, Italy) in strict collaboration with local administrators and citizens to estimate the temporal dynamics, spatial distribution, and population size of Ae. albopictus and the dispersal and survival of irradiated males. We applied ovitrap monitoring, geo-spatial analyses, mark-release-recapture technique, and a citizen-science approach. Results allow to predict the seasonal (from April to October, with peaks of 928-9,757 males/ha) and spatial distribution of the species, highlighting the capacity of Ae. albopictus population of Procida to colonize and maintain high frequencies in urban as well as in sylvatic inhabited environments. Irradiated males shown limited ability to disperse (mean daily distance travelled <60m) and daily survival estimates ranging between 0.80 and 0.95. Overall, the ecological characteristics of the island, the acquired knowledge on Ae. albopictus spatial and temporal distribution, the high human and Ae. albopictus densities and the positive attitude of the resident population in being active parts in innovative mosquito control projects provide the ground for evidence-based planning of the interventions and for the assessment of their effectiveness. In addition, the results highlight the value of creating synergies between research groups, local administrators, and citizens for affordable monitoring (and, in the future, control) of mosquito populations.
Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Dissemination in the Wildlife, Livestock, and Water of Maiella National Park, Italy

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health concern that has been linked to humans, animals, and the environment. The One Health approach highlights the connection between humans, animals, and the environment and suggests that a multidisciplinary approached be used in studies investigating AMR. The present study was carried out to identify and characterize the antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacteria isolated from wildlife and livestock feces as well as from surface water samples in Maiella National Park, Italy. Ecological and georeferenced data were used to select two sampling locations, one where wildlife was caught within livestock grazing areas (sympatric group) and one where wildlife was caught outside of livestock grazing areas (non-sympatric group). Ninety-nine bacterial isolates from 132 feces samples and seven isolates from five water samples were collected between October and December 2019. The specimens were examined for species identification, antibiotic susceptibility and molecular detection of antibiotic resistance. Forty isolates were identified as Escherichia coli, forty-eight as Enterococcus spp., eight as Streptococcus spp. and ten as other gram-negative bacteria. Phenotypic antibiotic resistance to at least one antimicrobial agent, including some antibiotics that play a critical role in human medicine, was detected in 36/106 (33.9%, 95%CI: 25–43) isolates and multidrug resistance was detected in 9/106 isolates (8.49%, 95%CI: 3.9–15.5). In addition, genes associated with antibiotic resistance were identified in 61/106 (57.55%, 95%CI: 47.5–67) isolates. The samples from sympatric areas were 2.11 (95%CI: 1.2–3.5) times more likely to contain resistant bacterial isolates than the samples from non-sympatric areas. These data suggest that drug resistant bacteria may be transmitted in areas where wildlife and livestock cohabitate. This emphasizes the need for further investigations focusing on the interactions between humans, wildlife, and the environment, the results of which can aid in the early detection of emerging AMR profiles and possible transmission routes.

Abstract:Hybridization between native and introduced species is one of the most important reasons underlying the impact on biodiversity exerted by biological invasions and also one of the hardest to be detected. The East-Asian sika deer Cervus nippon has been introduced to several European countries, where it is known to generate fertile offspring with the congeneric native red deer C. elaphus , threatening its local populations with genetic pollution. Most studies on hybrid populations have been carried out in northern and eastern Europe, whereas introductions of this deer and their effects are still poorly known in Southern countries. In this study, we updated the distribution of sika deer in Italy, where the species has been present since at least 25 years ago, but where no formal assessment has ever been conducted. We confirm the occurrence of sika deer genes in formerly pure red-deer populations in central Italy by means of genetic analyses. Further range expansion of invasive sika deer and red × sika deer hybrids is likely to lead to further hybridisations and introgression, with implications for the genetic integrity of native red deer populations.

Abstract:CHIKV has become an emerging public health concern in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere as a consequenceof the expansion of the endemic areas of its vectors (mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus). In 2017, a new outbreak of CHIKV was detected in Italy with three clusters of autochthonous transmission in the Lazio Region (central Italy), in the cities of Anzio, Rome, and Latina and a secondary cluster in the Calabria Region (south Italy). Given the climate characteristics of Italy, sporadic outbreaks mostly driven by imported cases followed by autochthonous transmission could occur during the summer season. This highlights the importance of a well-designed surveillance system, which should promptly identify autochthonous transmission. The use of a surveillance system integrating different surveillance tools, including entomological surveillance in a one health approach, together with education of the health care professionals should facilitate the detection, response, and control of arboviruses spreading.
Invasion by red imported fire ants depletes soil microarthropod communities in agricultural systems

Abstract:Biological invasion is one of the major challenges to changing ecosystems worldwide. Red fire ants are a prime example of invasive soil animals. However, the impacts of their invasion on the native soil animal communities are still poorly understood. Here, we investigated how the biomass and diversity of soil microarthropods (incl., Collembola and Acari) vary between areas affected by red fire ants at different degrees (i.e., OA, occurrence area, 0–20 m from the nest; PCA, prevention and control area, 20–50 m; POA, potential occurrence area, 50–100 m). We also tested whether the potential effects of ant invasion on other animals are associated with changes in soil properties in the invaded areas. Our results showed a decline of 64% in species richness, 74% in density, and 72% in biomass of microarthropods in OA in comparison with POA. This reduction was mainly driven by the decrease of Acari, while no reduction in Collembola biomass was observed. Despite soil properties being significantly different between ant‐impacted areas, structural equation models indicated that the direct association of invasion with microarthropod communities is stronger than the indirect association mediated by soil properties. Therefore, we consider that direct biological interaction is more likely the major mechanism behind the observed changes in microarthropod communities. The effects of red fire ants were different among taxonomic and functional groups, with litter‐dwelling Collembola, Oribatida, and Mesostigmata (Acari) affected more negatively than soil‐dwelling and surface‐dwelling Collembola. Further, red fire ants affected the turnover component of beta‐diversity (i.e., replacement of species) for both Collembola and Acari. However, the impact on the nestedness component, which is related to species local extinction and population decline, was only detected for Acari. Our study shows that red fire ant invasion is associated with the depletion of soil microarthropod community, and especially highlights that Acari are more vulnerable to this invasion compared to Collembola. The divergent response between different taxonomic and functional groups of microarthropods and the consequent shift in microarthropod communities may have important significance to soil ecological functioning in the impacted areas.

Abstract:The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most relevant problems for human and animal health. According to One Health Approach, it is important to regulate the use of antimicrobials and monitor the spread of AMR in the environment as well. Apis mellifera (L. 1758) colonies were used as bioindicators thanks to their physical and behavioural characteristics. During their foraging flights, bees can intercept small particles, including atmospheric particulate matter, etc., and also microorganisms. To date, the antimicrobial surveillance network is limited to the sanitary level but lacks into environmental context. This study aimed to evaluate the use of A. mellifera colonies distributed throughout the Emilia-Romagna region (Italy) as indicators of environmental antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. This was performed by creating a statistical predictive model that establishes correlations between environmental characteristics and the likelihood of isolating specific bacterial genera and antimicrobial-resistant strains. A total of 608 strains were isolated and tested for susceptibility to 19 different antimicrobials. Aztreonam-resistant strains were significantly related to environments with sanitary structures, agricultural areas and wetlands, while urban areas present a higher probability of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole-resistant strains isolation. Concerning genera, environments with sanitary structures and wetlands are significantly related to the genera Proteus spp., while the Escherichia spp. strains can be probably isolated in industrial environments. The obtained models showed maximum values of Models Accuracy and robustness (R2) of 55 % and 24 %, respectively. The results indicate the efficacy of utilizing A. mellifera colonies as valuable bioindicators for estimating the prevalence of AMR in environmentally disseminated bacteria. This survey can be considered a good basis for the development of further studies focused on monitoring both sanitary and animal pathology, creating a specific network in the environments of interest.

Abstract:Refugees and migrants remain one of the most vulnerable people and the COVID-19 pandemic has posed additional challenges both in terms of increased risk of infection and death experienced, highlighting existing inequities in access to and utilization of health services, as underlined by World Health Organization in 2020 in the Health and Migration Programme. In the context of the Programme 'Epidemiological surveillance and control of COVID-19 in metropolitan urban areas and for the containment of the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in the migrant population in Italy', coordinated by the Italian Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CCM) and funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, an experimental epidemiological, virological, and molecular SARS-CoV-2 surveillance system addressed to migrant populations in Sicily through Mediterranean routes was implemented. To this end, a multidisciplinary network supported by a hub&spoke system of laboratories was established in Sicily Region (Southern Italy), using molecular and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques to identify different SARS-CoV-2 strains in relation to migration flows. Herein, the lesson learnt through this integrated surveillance model, that was in place from February 2021 till the end of the COVID-19 emergency in Italy, are reported. Overall, the data emphasized the need for enhancing molecular surveillance in the areas of the globe where testing and sequencing resources are limited. The epidemiological, virological, and molecular SARS-CoV-2 monitoring, targeted to the migrant population, may also provide a valuable experimental model.
