Abstract:The market for drones has been growing for years and the prognosis for the future assumes a further increase in growth. Currently, drones deliver retail goods, foodstuffs, industrial and medicinal goods. Furthermore, drones can relieve rescue services and first responders in difficult situations, such as the assessment of the situation at scenes of accidents. They can be at the scene more quickly than ambulances or helicopters: this is particularly important in built-up areas with traffic jam problems and difficult to access or remote areas. Drones must be integrated as a meaningful supplement into existing safety and rescue chains. This article presents research projects and specific cases of application, which range from the needs-based supply of regional hospitals with medicaments using drones, the delivery of blood conserves in rural areas of South Africa by drones and many scenarios in the rescue service. The next developmental steps affect the scalability and automation of drone-supported missions; however, technical progress alone is insufficient; the legal and regulatory frameworks must be set for certain drone scenarios. In order to safely and efficiently administrate the European airspace and to achieve further possible applications for drones, the U‑Space concept of the European Union represents a possible essential prerequisite.

Abstract:The fast evolution of drone technology as well as the ubiquitous adoption from private and commercial users lead to the necessity to introduce new regulations covering the operations of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in European Member states. The regulations implemented rules for multiple scenarios of normal and complex UAS operations as well as the collection of registration data from remote pilots and Operators. This research project tried for the first time to determine the status quo of the adoption of the novel EASA regulations of drones within the European members states. Data from National Aviation Authorities has been collected, accumulated, and analyzed towards qualitative and quantitative features.

Abstract:EuroDRONE is an Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) demonstration project, funded by the EU’s SESAR organization, and its aim is to test and validate key UTM technologies for Europe’s ‘U-Space’ UTM program. The EuroDRONE UTM architecture comprises cloud software (DroNav) and hardware (transponder) to be installed on drones. The proposed EuroDRONE system is a Highly Automated Air Traffic Management System for small UAVs operating at low altitudes. It is a sophisticated, self-learning system based on software and hardware elements, operating in a distributed computing environment, offering multiple levels of redundancy, fail-safe algorithms for conflict prevention/resolution and assets management. EuroDRONE focuses its work on functionalities which involve the use of new communication links, the use of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology to communicate information between drones and operators for safe and effective UTM functionality. Practical demonstrations that took place in Patras/Messolonghi in 2019 are presented and show the benefits and shortcomings of near-term UTM implementation in Europe.

Abstract:Rapid technological developments in autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV or drones) and an evolving legislation may soon open the way for their large-scale implementation in the last mile delivery of products. The use of drones could drastically decrease labour costs and has been hyped as a potential disruptor to the parcel delivery industry. Online retailers and delivery companies such as Amazon, are already filing up patents for the development of multi-level fulfilment centres for unmanned aerial vehicles or "drone-beehives" that would allow the deployment of this technology within built environment. A substantial amount of research has been carried out in the last years on the potential use of drones for parcel delivery, principally in the area of logistic optimisation. However, little is known about the potential market and economic viability of such services in Europe. This paper presents a modelling framework using EU-wide high-resolution population and land-use data to estimate the potential optimal location of drone-beehives based on economic viability criterion. It estimates the potential number of EU28 citizens that could potentially benefit from last mile-drone delivery services under four scenarios. The performed analyses indicates that under the scenario considered as the most technologically realistic, up to 7% of EU citizens could get access to such services. When considering technological improvements scenarios, the share reaches 30%. Furthermore, results suggest that due to the differences in population and land-use patterns in the different Member States, the potential drone coverage across Europe could be very heterogeneous, with the UK, Germany, Italy and France appearing as the most likely countries where drone-beehives may have the most efficient development.

Abstract:In November 2022, the European Commission presented its Drone Strategy 2.0 with two main objectives: to build the European Union's (EU's) drone service market and to strengthen the Union's civil, security and defence industry capabilities and synergies. From the Commission's perspective, accelerating the integration of drones in Europe's airspace has the potential to enable progress on numerous policy objectives, such as the green transition, urban mobility, industrial renewal and cutting‐edge R&D in the civil–military domain. In this commentary, though, we argue that the Strategy is indicative of wider contemporary trends in EU policy‐making regarding cross‐cutting policy agendas, industry‐centred R&D ambitions and the identification and promotion of infrastructural goals enabling further civil–military co‐operation. These tendencies capture the growing importance of dual‐use technologies, both in society at large and in the security and military domains. This is particularly relevant in the current European context of growing military expenditure with the war in Ukraine.

Abstract:Research background: Many countries of the world announced increasing the use of drones for civil and military purposes. An important feature of the drone market is that it is an “ecosystem”“, which includes software developers, integrators, component manufacturers, etc. By 2025, the capacity of the global unmanned aerial vehicle market will grow by 3 times. Purpose of the article: The aim of the study is to identify current trends in the development of the global market of unmanned aerial vehicles for commercial use. Methods: A significant part of the necessary statistical data is closed for public access, due to the fact that most of the UAVs produced are part of the military-industrial complex or “dual-use” goods. Only 23.6% of all UAVs produced can be classified as civilian or commercial products. Market development trends using economic statistic methods were determined based on the data of the reports “The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in International Trade and their Regulation”, Drone Industry Insights, the analytical agency Mordor Intelligence, “Global Drone Regulations Database”. Findings & Value added: The USA, China and France are the leaders in the production of commercial and consumer drones. The rating of drone manufacturers is led by: DJI (China), SenseFly / Parrot SA (France), Yuneec (China), 3D Robotics (USA). The largest purchases are made by the USA, China, Russia, Great Britain, Australia, France, Saudi Arabia, India and South Korea. Significant growth in the use of drones is expected in medicine, logistics and delivery.

Abstract:Despite being a hot research topic for a decade, drones are still not part of our everyday life. In this article, we analyze the reasons for this state of affairs and look for ways of improving the situation. We rely on the achievements of the so-called Technology Assessment (TA), an interdisciplinary research field aiming at providing knowledge for better-informed and well-reflected decisions concerning new technologies. We demonstrate that the most critical area requiring further development is safety. Since Unmanned Aerial System Traffic Management (UTM) systems promise to address this problem in a systematic manner, we also indicate relevant solutions for UTM that have to be designed by wireless experts. Moreover, we suggest project implementation guidelines for several drone applications. The guidelines take into account the public acceptance levels estimated in state of the art literature of the correspondent field.

Abstract:In recent years, a rising numbers of people arrived in the European Union, traveling across the Mediterranean Sea or overland through Southeast Europe in what has been later named as the European migrant crisis. In the last 5 years, more than 16 thousands people have lost their lives in the Mediterranean sea during the crossing. The United Nations Secretary General Strategy on New Technologies is supporting the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics to accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which includes safe and regular migration processes among the others. In the same spirit, the central idea of this project aims at using AI technology for Search And Rescue (SAR) operations at sea. In particular, we propose an autonomous fleet of self-organizing intelligent drones that would enable the coverage of a broader area, speeding-up the search processes and finally increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of migrants rescue operations.

Abstract:Modern agriculture necessitates the use of techniques and tools that pollute the environment less and improve the safety of food and feed production. In the field of plant protection, drones are attracting increasing attention due to their versatility and applicability in a variety of environmental and working conditions. Drone crop spraying techniques offer several advantages, including increased safety and cost effectiveness through autonomous and programmed operations based on specific schedules and routes. One of the main advantages of using drones for plant protection is their ability to monitor large areas of crops in a short amount of time. In addition to crop protection management, using drones for augmentative biocontrol facilitates the distribution of beneficial organisms to the exact locations where they are required, which can increase the effectiveness of biocontrol agents while reducing distribution costs. In this context, given the very limited commercial use of drones in the Western Balkans’ agri-food sector, the use of drones in the agri-food industry is a topic that needs to be elaborated on and highly promoted. Additionally, the specific legal regulations in Serbia that currently limit the use of drones in agriculture must be outlined. Conventional crop production is still significantly more prevalent in Serbia, but given the region’s continuous technological progress, there is no doubt that farmers’ education and future investments in precision agriculture will most likely increase the use of state-of-the-art technologies and drones in agriculture.

Abstract:The incredible scale of development in the world requires constant innovation of technologies used in agriculture. Precision agriculture is also one of the most defining trends of our time in drone technology, which represents a revolutionary innovation in arable crop production. Its continuous monitoring provides many opportunities to assess the specific culture, estimate yields, determine water shortages, nutrient deficiencies, and apply other decision support. Frequent flights provide farmers with up-to-date information so that they can respond to changes in status quickly and cost-effectively. The use of drones is also responsible for improving the competitiveness of agriculture, drones and solutions based on them are spreading rapidly around the world. After reviewing the relevant international literature, publications and materials published by stakeholders involved in drone technology, we conducted a questionnaire survey among farmers based in northern Hungary. Commitment and willingness to precision developments were discovered how open they are to modern agriculture achievements, to what extent are they willing to sacrifice technology, especially spray drones, to what extent do they keep in mind aspects related to the environmental load and with what willingness to invest. overall, the perception of precision elements is positive, farmers 71% considers the use of drones in plant protection, for example, a correct and useful idea, which reduces treading damage, chemical use and soil use.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones, have emerged as a disruptive technology with the potential to revolutionize operations across various industries. Drones are the fast-growing internet-of-things technology and are estimated to have a $100 billion market value in the next decade. Exploring drone operations through research has the potential to yield innovative academic insights and create significant practical effects in diverse industries, offering a competitive edge. Drawing insights from both academic and industry literature, this article describes how technological advancements in UAVs may disrupt traditional operational practices in different industries (e.g., commercial last-mile delivery, commercial pickup and delivery, telecommunication, insurance, healthcare, humanitarian, environmental, urban planning, homeland security), identifies the value of this evolving disruptive technology from sustainability and operational innovation perspectives, argues the significance of this area for operations management by conceptualizing a research agenda. The current state of the art focuses on the computing aspect of analytical models to tackle a variety of synthetic drone-related problems, with mixed integer optimization being the primary tool. There is a very significant research gap that should focus on drone operations management with industry know-how by partnering with actual stakeholders and using a variety of tools (i.e., econometrics, field experiments, game theory, optimal control, utility functions). This article aims to promote research on UAVs from operations management and industry-specific point of view.

Abstract:The systematic environmental monitoring of the land, atmosphere, oceans and their coupling zones, is assisted by the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that can operate over rural and/or urban areas to provide enhanced spatial and temporal measurement resolutions compared against corresponding satellite products. The international UAV market includes a vast number of solutions that carry sensors for environmental monitoring varying in type, flight time, carrying weight, communication, and autonomous flight. The majority of these commercial UAVs (especially the low-cost ones) have been designed for specific applications and their main disadvantage is that they can only integrate the payload they have been initially designed to carry, thus presenting minimal modularity. This work presents a modular and affordable platform where the user can easily adapt almost any type of environmental monitoring sensor, which can transmit its measurements to the UAV flight controller without the need for any additional modification. A novel communication protocol has been developed that is also capable to incorporate proximity sensors for collision avoidance. In addition, a wireless mobile telecommunications module incorporation through the use of mobile devices on the UAV provides real-time animated map generation along with cooperative capabilities for fleet missions.

Abstract:Multirotor drones are becoming increasingly popular in a number of application fields, with a unique appeal to the scientific community and the general public. Applications include security, monitoring and surveillance, environmental mapping, and emergency scenario management: in all these areas, two of the main issues to address are the availability of appropriate software architectures to coordinate teams of drones and solutions to cope with the short-term battery life. This article proposes the novel concepts of Social Drone Sharing (SDS) and Social Charging Station (SCS), which provide the basis to address these problems. Specifically, the article focuses on teams of drones in pre- and post-event monitoring and assessment. Using multirotor drones in these situations can be difficult due to the limited flight autonomy when multiple targets need to be inspected. The idea behind the SDS concept is that citizens can volunteer to recharge a drone or replace its batteries if it lands on their property. The computation of paths to inspect multiple targets will then take into account the availability of SCSs to find solutions compatible with the required inspection and flight times. The main contribution of this article is the development of a cloud-based software architecture for SDS mission management, which includes a multi-drone path-optimization algorithm taking the SDS and SCS concepts into account. Experiments in simulation and a lab environment are discussed, paving the path to a larger trial in a real scenario.

Abstract:This study examines the potentials and challenges of drones, or unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs), in supply chain management (SCM) and logistics. A systematic literature review was performed to capture the dynamics surrounding drones and to provide a timely and comprehensive overview of what has been studied so far and what needs to be investigated in the future. 55 publications were selected and thoroughly analysed. The findings of this study illustrate that the potential strengths of applying drones in SCM and logistics are: (1) support of humanitarian logistics, (2) reduced delivery time, (3) reduced cost, (4) improved flexibility, and (5) increased sustainability. In addition, the challenges posed by drones in SCM and logistics are grouped into technical, organisational, safety-related, and regulatory issues. This study also investigates real-life drone deployments in SCM and logistics and sets forth an agenda for future research.

Abstract:The use of drones in an urban environment, especially in the context of logistics, is expected to increase substantially in the coming years. This emerging technology poses a potential threat to other aircraft in the airspace, as well as to human beings and other assets on the ground. In order to mitigate these risks, it is vital to know where an automated drone is, where it is allowed to fly and when. Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) can be used as a useful tool to standardize automated drone flight data and facilitate the integration of drones into an airspace in a safe manner. This paper proposes an extension to the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE). The proposed model is based on the relevant regulations of European Union (EU) and the Unites States of America (USA), and considers the state-of-the-art literature on drone logistics in an urban environment.

Abstract:Drones are aircraft that have no onboard, human pilot. Through the twentieth century, piloted aircraft made far greater progress than drones. During the twenty-first century, on the other hand, changes in both drone technologies and drone economics have been much more rapid. Particularly in the case of small, inexpensive devices, the question arises as to whether existing regulatory frameworks can cope. To answer that question, it is necessary to document the nature and characteristics of drones, the dimensions across which they vary, the purposes to which they are put, and the impacts that they appear likely to have. The analysis concludes that careful consideration is needed of the adequacy of controls over the impacts of drones on two important values – public safety, and behavioural privacy.

Abstract:This study explores attitudes towards urban air mobility (UAM) for e-commerce deliveries. UAM, which utilizes drones, has the potential to revolutionize transport services and logistics, leading to economic benefits and reductions in congestion and pollution. However, public acceptance is crucial for a successful implementation; thus, understanding the people's perspective is key. Descriptive statistics were employed to evaluate survey results from three different European regions, followed by a cluster analysis to define potential user profiles. This study revealed slightly different perceptions towards UAM between the analyzed regions, but also a generally positive attitude. The most important expected identified benefits from UAM were a decrease in congestion and pollution in city centers. High-acceptance segments are gender-balanced and correspond mostly to active population and frequent online shoppers that perceive value in drone deliveries, especially related to an increased convenience and speed. They support public investment in UAM and are willing to pay more for these services and to have their home flown over. Opposite attitudes were expressed by low-acceptance segments, which are female-dominated and include mostly non-frequent online shoppers. The identified user profiles in this study can support the development of public policy and marketing strategies to increase acceptance and adoption.
