Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF-177) was synthesized, characterized and evaluated for hydrogen adsorption as a potential adsorbent for hydrogen storage. The hydrogen adsorption equilibrium and kinetic data were measured in a volumetric unit at low pressure and in a magnetic suspension balance at hydrogen pressure up to 100bar. The MOF-177 adsorbent was characterized with nitrogen adsorption for pore textural properties, scanning electron microscopy for morphology and particle size, and X-ray powder diffraction for phase structure. The MOF-177 synthesized in this work was found to have a uniform pore size distribution with median pore size of 12.7Å, a higher specific surface area (Langmuir: 5994m2/g; BET: 3275m2/g), and a higher hydrogen adsorption capacity (11.0wt.% excess adsorption, 19.67wt.% absolute adsorption) than previously reported values on MOF-177. Freundlich equation fits well the hydrogen adsorption isotherms at low and high pressures. Diffusivity and isosteric heat of hydrogen adsorption were estimated from the hydrogen adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data measured in this work.

Abstract:Hydrogen isotope separation with nanoporous materials is a very challenging yet promising approach. To overcome the limitation of the conventional isotope separation strategy, quantum sieving-based separation using nanoporous materials has been investigated recently. In this study, to see the thermodynamic deuterium separation phenomena attributed to the chemical affinity quantum sieving effect, we examine Hofmann-type metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), Co(pyz)[M(CN)4] (pyz = pyrazine, M = Pd2+, Pt2+, and Ni2+), which have microporosity (4.0 × 3.9 Å2) and an extraordinarily high density of open metal sites (∼9 mmol/cm3). Owing to the preferential adsorption of D2 over H2 at strongly binding open metal sites, the Hofmann-type MOF, Co(pyz)[Pd(CN)4] exhibited a high selectivity (SD2/H2) of 21.7 as well as a large D2 uptake of 10 mmol/g at 25 K. This is the first study of Hofmann-type MOFs to report high selectivity and capacity, both of which are important parameters for the practical application of porous materials toward isotope separation.
Use of breakthrough experiment to evaluate the performance of hydrogen isotope separation for metal-organic frameworks M-MOF-74 (M=Co, Ni, Mg, Zn)

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">The unique adsorption performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) indicates a new direction for gas separation and purification. The low-temperature distillation, as a traditional technique for hydrogen isotope separation, is limited as it is a high energy- and cost-intensive process. Instead of utilizing such a conventional separation route, we use ordered microporous frameworks based on a physical adsorption mechanism to solve the challenge of hydrogen isotope separation. Herein we analyze M-MOF-74 (M=Co, Ni, Mg, Zn), featuring a hexagonal channel about 11 Å and high density of open metal sites, for their ability to separate and purify deuterium from the hydrogen isotope mixture by dynamic column breakthrough experiments. Our results show that the combination of the strength of binding sites, density of coordinatively unsaturated metal sites and hydrogen isotope adsorption capacity of materials renders Co-MOF-74 as an optimal adsorbent for the capture of deuterium from hydrogen isotope mixtures in a simulated industrial process.</p>

A Microporous Metal‐Organic Framework Supramolecularly Assembled from a CuII Dodecaborate Cluster Complex for Selective Gas Separation

Abstract:A novel 3D metal-organic framework BSF-1 based on the closo-dodecaborate cluster [B12H12](2-) was readily prepared at room temperature by supramolecular assembly of CuB12H12 and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)acetylene. The permanent microporous structure was studied by X-ray crystallography, powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and gas sorption. The experimental and theoretical study of the gas sorption behavior of BSF-1 for N-2, C2H2, C2H4, CO2, C3H8, C2H6, and CH4 indicated excellent separation selectivities for C3H8/CH4, C2H6/CH4, and C2H2/CH4 as well as moderately high separation selectivities for C2H2/C2H4, C2H2/CO2, and CO2/CH4. Moreover, the practical separation performance of C3H8/CH4 and C2H6/CH4 was confirmed by dynamic breakthrough experiments. The good cyclability and high water/thermal stability render it suitable for real industrial applications.

Abstract:Rapid room-temperature synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desired for industrial implementation and commercialization. Here we find that a (Zn,Cu) hydroxy double salt (HDS) intermediate formed in situ from ZnO particles or thin films enables rapid growth (<1 min) of HKUST-1 (Cu3(BTC)2) at room temperature. The space-time-yield reaches >3 × 10(4) kg·m(-3)·d(-1), at least 1 order of magnitude greater than any prior report. The high anion exchange rate of (Zn,Cu) hydroxy nitrate HDS drives the ultrafast MOF formation. Similarly, we obtained Cu-BDC, ZIF-8, and IRMOF-3 structures from HDSs, demonstrating synthetic generality. Using ZnO thin films deposited via atomic layer deposition, MOF patterns are obtained on pre-patterned surfaces, and dense HKUST-1 coatings are grown onto various form factors, including polymer spheres, silicon wafers, and fibers. Breakthrough tests show that the MOF-functionalized fibers have high adsorption capacity for toxic gases. This rapid synthesis route is also promising for new MOF-based composite materials and applications.

Abstract:A three-dimensional copper metal—organic framework with the rare chabazite (CHA) topology namely FJI-Y11 has been constructed with flexibly carboxylic ligand 5,5′-[(1,4-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(oxy)]diisophthalic acid (H4L). FJI-Y11 exhibits high water stability with the pH range from 2 to 12 at temperature as high as 373 K. Importantly, FJI-Y11 also shows high efficiency of hydrogen isotope separation using dynamic column breakthrough experiments under atmospheric pressure at 77 K. Attributed to its excellent structural stability, FJI-Y11 possesses good regenerated performance and maintains high separation efficiency after three cycles of breakthrough experiments.

Abstract:Deuterium has been recognized as an irreplaceable element in industrial and scientific research. However, hydrogen isotope separation still remains a huge challenge due to the identical physicochemical properties of the isotopes. In this paper, a partially fluorinated metal–organic framework (MOF) with copper, a so-called FMOFCu, was investigated to determine the separation efficiency and capacity of the framework for deuterium extraction from a hydrogen isotope mixture. The unique structure of this porous material consists of a trimodal pore system with large tubular cavities connected through a smaller cavity with bottleneck apertures with a size of 3.6 Å plus a third hidden cavity connected by an even smaller aperture of 2.5 Å. Depending on the temperature, these two apertures show a gate-opening effect and the cavities get successively accessible for hydrogen with increasing temperature. Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) measurements indicate that the locally flexible MOF can separate D2 from anisotope mixture efficiently, with a selectivity of 14 at 25 K and 4 at 77 K.

Abstract:In the face of escalating global energy demands, deuterium (D2) is receiving increasing attention as a clean and efficient energy source. However, the challenge of separating deuterium from hydrogen (H2) arises due to their considerable physical and chemical similarities. The use of porous materials to separate D2/H2, which has either high separation efficiency or ideal D2 capacity and even approaches a good balance of efficiency and capacity in the case of some advanced porous materials, is one of the most promising alternative technologies for hydrogen isotope separation. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, with their diverse structures, highly adjustable pore channels, and surface functionality, offer tremendous potential in the field of D2/H2 separation. In this review, we systematically summarize the research progress of MOFs in D2/H2 separation and discuss their advantages, challenges, and future directions from the perspectives of separation mechanisms and separation technology.
Capture of heavy hydrogen isotopes in a metal-organic framework with active Cu(I) sites

Abstract:The production of pure deuterium and the removal of tritium from nuclear waste are the key challenges in separation of light isotopes. Presently, the technological methods are extremely energy- and cost-intensive. Here we report the capture of heavy hydrogen isotopes from hydrogen gas by selective adsorption at Cu(I) sites in a metal-organic framework. At the strongly binding Cu(I) sites (32 kJ mol−1) nuclear quantum effects result in higher adsorption enthalpies of heavier isotopes. The capture mechanism takes place most efficiently at temperatures above 80 K, when an isotope exchange allows the preferential adsorption of heavy isotopologues from the gas phase. Large difference in adsorption enthalpy of 2.5 kJ mol−1 between D2 and H2 results in D2-over-H2 selectivity of 11 at 100 K, to the best of our knowledge the largest value known to date. Combination of thermal desorption spectroscopy, Raman measurements, inelastic neutron scattering and first principles calculations for H2/D2 mixtures allows the prediction of selectivities for tritium-containing isotopologues.

Abstract:Efficient separation of hydrogen isotopes is of vital importance to develop nuclear energy industry, while it remains a significant challenge to separate D 2 from H 2 due to their identical physicochemical properties. As one of the efficient alternatives to conventional techniques, the thermodynamic quantum sieving technology using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring open metal sites (OMSs) has shown a great potential. However, the lack of transferable force fields in conventional molecular simulations and high expense of brute-force screening hinder the quick discovery of MOFs targeted for D 2 /H 2 separation. Herein, based on the established force field with high accuracy and transferability, machine learning and feature engineering are applied to address these challenges. Machine learning comprehensively assesses different descriptors that influence the separation performance of 929 experimentally-reported MOFs bearing Cu(II)-OMS. By employing the same metal nodes, new Cu MOF database (6,748 MOFs) is constructed, in which 45 hypothetical MOFs are firstly identified out through feature engineering that exhibiting high performance. Furthermore, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations are performed on these MOFs, among which the optimal one exhibits comparable selectivity (36.9) and high adsorbent performance score (315.9) that surpasses the state-of-the-art materials do. This work not only presents a cost-effective approach firstly applying in the separation of hydrogen isotopes, but also provides experimental guidance for the design of high-performance adsorbents.

Abstract:Porous solids can accommodate and release molecular hydrogen readily, making them attractive for minimizing the energy requirements for hydrogen storage relative to physical storage systems. However, H2 adsorption enthalpies in such materials are generally weak (−3 to −7 kJ/mol), leading to low capacities at ambient temperature. Metal–organic frameworks with well-defined structures and synthetic modularity could allow for tuning adsorbent–H2 interactions for ambient-temperature storage. Recently, Cu2.2Zn2.8Cl1.8(btdd)3 (H2btdd = bis(1H-1,2,3-triazolo-[4,5-b],[4′,5′-i])dibenzo[1,4]dioxin; CuI-MFU-4l) was reported to show a large H2 adsorption enthalpy of −32 kJ/mol owing to π-backbonding from CuI to H2, exceeding the optimal binding strength for ambient-temperature hydrogen storage (−15 to −25 kJ/mol). Toward realizing optimal H2 binding, we sought to modulate the π-backbonding interactions by tuning the pyramidal geometry of the trigonal CuI sites. A series of isostructural frameworks, Cu2.7M2.3X1.3(btdd)3 (M = Mn, Cd; X = Cl, I; CuIM-MFU-4l), was synthesized through post-synthetic modification of the corresponding materials M5X4(btdd)3 (M = Mn, Cd; X = CH3CO2, I; MX-MFU-4l). This strategy adjusts the H2 adsorption enthalpy at the trigonal pyramidal CuI sites as a function of the ionic radius of the central metal ion of the pentanuclear cluster node, leading to −33 kJ/mol for M = ZnII (0.74 Å), −27 kJ/mol for M = MnII (0.83 Å), and −23 kJ/mol for M = CdII (0.95 Å). Thus, CuICd-MFU-4l provides a second, more stable example of optimal H2 binding energy for ambient-temperature storage among reported metal–organic frameworks. Structural, computational, and spectroscopic studies indicate that a larger central metal planarizes trigonal CuI sites, weakening the π-backbonding to H2.

Abstract:In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy was developed for the first time to observe the hydrogen isotope separation behavior at active Cu I sites within Cu I -MFU-4 l , and clear evidence of the preferential adsorption of D 2 over H 2 was directly captured. More importantly, our results show direct spectral proof to clarify the chemical affinity quantum sieving mechanism of hydrogen isotope separation within porous adsorbents.

Abstract:The hydrogen adsorption sites in MOF5 were determined using neutron powder diffraction along with first-principles calculations. The metal-oxide cluster is primarily responsible for the adsorption while the organic linker plays only a secondary role. Equally important, at low temperatures and high-concentration, H2 molecules form unique interlinked high-symmetry nano-clusters with intermolecular distances as small as 3.0 Ang. and H2-uptake as high as 10-wt%. These results hold the key to optimizing MOF materials for hydrogen storage applications and also suggest that MOFs can be used as templates to create artificial interlinked hydrogen nano-cages with novel properties.
Large-Scale Computational Screening of Metal–Organic Frameworks for D2/H2 Separation

Abstract:Deuterium (D2) is one of the important fuel sources that power nuclear fusion reactors. The existing D2/H2 separation technologies that obtain high-purity D2 are cost-intensive. Recent research has shown that metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are of good potential for D2/H2 separation application. In this work, a high-throughput computational screening of 12020 computation-ready experimental MOFs is carried out to determine the best MOFs for hydrogen isotope separation application. Meanwhile, the detailed structure-performance correlation is systematically investigated with the aid of machine learning. The results indicate that the ideal D2/H2 adsorption selectivity calculated based on Henry coefficient is strongly correlated with the 1/ΔAD feature descriptor; that is, inverse of the adsorbility difference of the two adsorbates. Meanwhile, the machine learning (ML) results show that the prediction accuracy of all the four ML methods is significantly improved after the addition of this feature descriptor. In addition, the ML results based on extreme gradient boosting model also revealed that the 1/ΔAD descriptor has the highest relative importance compared to other commonly-used descriptors. To further explore the effect of hydrogen isotope separation in binary mixture, 1548 MOFs with ideal adsorption selectivity greater than 1.5 are simulated at equimolar conditions. The structure-performance relationship shows that high adsorption selectivity MOFs generally have smaller pore size (0.3–0.5 nm) and lower surface area. Among the top 200 performers, the materials mainly have the sql, pcu, cds, hxl, and ins topologies. Finally, three MOFs with high D2/H2 selectivity and good D2 uptake are identified as the best candidates, of all which had one-dimensional channel pore. The findings obtained in this work may be helpful for the identification of potentially promising candidates for hydrogen isotope separation.

Abstract:AbstractPorous materials that contain ultrafine pore apertures can separate hydrogen isotopes via kinetic quantum sieving (KQS). However, it is challenging to design materials with suitably narrow pores for KQS that also show good adsorption capacities and operate at practical temperatures. Here, we investigate a metal–organic cage (MOC) assembled from organic macrocycles and ZnII ions that exhibits narrow windows (<3.0 Å). Two polymorphs, referred to as 2α and 2β, were observed. Both polymorphs exhibit D2/H2 selectivity in the temperature range 30–100 K. At higher temperature (77 K), the D2 adsorption capacity of 2β increases to about 2.7 times that of 2α, along with a reasonable D2/H2 selectivity. Gas sorption analysis and thermal desorption spectroscopy suggest a gate‐opening effect of the MOCs pore aperture. This promotes KQS at temperatures above liquid nitrogen temperature, indicating that MOCs hold promise for hydrogen isotope separation in real industrial environments.

Abstract:Hydrogen adsorption by the metal organic framework (MOF) structure Zn2(BDC)2(TED) is investigated using a combination of experimental and theoretical methods. By use of the nonempirical van der Waals density-functional (vdW-DF) approach, it is found that the locus of deepest H2 binding positions lies within two types of narrow channel. The energies of the most stable binding sites, as well as the number of such binding sites, are consistent with the values obtained from experimental adsorption isotherms and heat of adsorption data. Calculations of the shift of the H-H stretch frequency when adsorbed in the MOF give a value of approximately -30 cm-1 at the strongest binding point in each of the two channels. Ambient temperature infrared absorption spectroscopy measurements give a hydrogen peak centered at 4120 cm-1, implying a shift consistent with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have emerged as rapidly growing porous materials while established permanent porosities are very fragile and difficult to stabilize due to weak hydrogen-bonding interactions among building units. Herein, we report a stable hydrogen-bonded metallotecton framework (termed as HOF-ZJU-102) that was constructed through hydrogen-bonding networks between cationic metal-organic complexes [Cu-2(Hade)(4)(H2O)(2)](4+) (Hade=adenine) and GeF62- anions. The framework not only shows permanent porosity, but also exhibits efficient separation performance of C2H2/C2H4 at room temperature. More interestingly, its crystal structure could be irreversibly transformed into isostructural counterpart HOF-ZJU-101 by ion exchange in the SiF62- containing solution, evidenced by multiple characterization techniques including gas sorption measurements, F-19 NMR spectra, FTIR and EDS. Utilizing such an ion exchange mechanism, the collapsed HOF-ZJU-102 could be restored into HOF-ZJU-101 by simply soaking in the salt solution.
Computational Optimization of Room Temperature Usable Capacity for Hydrogen Storage in MFU-4-Type Metal–Organic Frameworks via Pairwise Metal Substitutions

Abstract:The efficient storage of hydrogen is a critical challenge in the quest for sustainable energy solutions. Current adsorbent-based methods achieve satisfactory storage densities predominantly under cryogenic temperatures and/or high pressures, which imposes problems with cost-efficient and safe implementation of this technology. Materials that can bind hydrogen gas reversibly at ambient temperatures and more moderate pressures could play a pivotal role in enabling hydrogen-powered technologies. In this study, we use reliable computational modelling to investigate two synthetically feasible paths for tuning the enthalpy of H2 binding in MFU-4-type metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), aiming to maximize usable capacity. This study examines MIMII4Cl3(bta)6 (bta− = benzotriazolate) Kuratowski-type clusters as a model for strong binding sites in MFU-4l frameworks. We systematically evaluate the impact of separately tuning the central MII metal ion (which plays a structural role) and the peripheral MI metal ion (which binds the substrate) on the energetics of H2 binding. Our computational findings reveal that there exist several combinations of MI and MII ions that provide optimal binding enthalpies for H2 storage. As a result, three of these new cluster compositions achieve high fractional usable capacities of the total H2 adsorbed under a pressure swing from 5 to 100 bar at room temperature. Additionally, we examine the nature of the binding interaction between the peripheral metal atom and the hydrogen molecule. While charge transfer predominantly induces this interaction, for several atom combinations change in the polarization (associated with variations in the ionic radius of the MI binding atom) is another important factor for adjusting the strength of the interaction. We suggest that the proposed compositions of Kuratowski-type clusters are highly desirable synthetic targets for future laboratory study.
