Abstract:With an ultimate range up to 1000 km, a maximum operating depth of 6000 m, and a generous payload capacity, Autosub6000 is well placed to become one of the world’s most capable deep diving Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). Recently, Autosub6000 successfully completed its first deep water engineering trials, and in September 2008, fitted with a multibeam sonar, will carry out its first science missions. This paper will describe how we are tackling the design issues that specifically affect a deep diving AUV which must be capable of operating with true autonomy, independently of the mother ship, namely: carrying adequate energy for long endurance and range, coping with varying buoyancy, and maintaining accurate navigation throughout missions lasting up to several days. Results from the recent engineering trails are presented, and future missions and development plans are discussed.

Abstract:This report details the development and application of a novel pressure-retaining sampler for hadal trenches. A special sampling mechanism makes the sampler unnecessary to equip an extra actuator for sealing. The developed control system and PC software allow the sampler to work automatically on the seabed. The high-pressure chamber test proved the proposed pressurization mechanism could significantly improve the pressure-retaining performance. The sampler was field-tested at a depth exceeding 10,800 m in the Mariana Trench and captured 174 amphipods with a pressure-retaining rate of over 82%.

Abstract:Revolutionary advancements in underwater imaging, robotics, and genomic sequencing have reshaped marine exploration. We present and demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach that uses emerging quantitative imaging technologies, an innovative robotic encapsulation system with in situ RNA preservation and next-generation genomic sequencing to gain comprehensive biological, biophysical, and genomic data from deep-sea organisms. The synthesis of these data provides rich morphological and genetic information for species description, surpassing traditional passive observation methods and preserved specimens, particularly for gelatinous zooplankton. Our approach enhances our ability to study delicate mid-water animals, improving research in the world's oceans.

Abstract:With the development of ever more powerful micro-computers, the cost and capabilities of robotic systems for environmental surveying using remotely control systems continues to decrease and improve. Historically, submarine exploration was restricted to companies or organisations with considerable finances and resources; however, the last decade has seen the advent of ‘low cost’ remotely operated vehicles (ROV). These cost anywhere from $400-$40,000 and provide an opportunity for wider participation in ocean exploration. However, with 60% of the world's seafloor lying at depths in excess of 1000 m and current low cost ROVs typiclly depth limited to just 100 m, there is presently an inability to “go deep” affordably. This review assesses the state of the art for deep ROV technologies and identifies the primary technological hurdles to overcome in order to facilitate proliferation of low cost ROVs for deep ocean exploration with an emphasis on their application to mineral and ore prospecting.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, a number of novel bacteria have been isolated from a mud sample taken in the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench. Although the need exists for taking sediment samples at full ocean depth, no high-power remotely operated vehicle (ROV) with full depth capability and the ability to take sediment samples existed anywhere in the world as of April 2005. JAMSTEC started developing such a sediment sampling system beginning in April 2005. The system consists of a sampling launcher and a pre-observation probe vehicle. The launcher contains a water sampler as well as sediment samplers. It launches the probe vehicle to make a preliminary survey, dropping the sediment sampler to obtain a sample. We carried out four sea trials from January 2007 to June 2008, including dives in the Mariana Trench, and we were able to obtain sediment samples from the deepest part of the Challenger Deep.

Abstract:Abstract Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are becoming accepted data-gathering tools within the marine science community in Europe, the US and elsewhere. Technology can now provide vehicles with a useful range and depth envelope. For example, the Southampton Oceanography Centre's Autosub-1 vehicle has already covered 263 km in a single oceanographic survey mission, reaching depths of 500 m off Bermuda in September 1998. The challenge now is to 'free the technology from the research community. Potential direct and indirect benefits from the offshore energy industry's use of AUVs have been quantified. For one company, the benefits of using survey class AUVs has been estimated at $60m over 5 years. The economics become more attractive as the industry moves to deeper water. While today's AUVs of long endurance are limited in depth, developments on the horizon in composite materials and high capacity, lightweight secondary batteries will enable 1000 km range, eight-day endurance and at least 1600 m diving depth to be in active service within the next two years. This paper will review the oceanographic survey achievements of the Autosub AUV over its 216 missions (to December 1999), working in UK, US and Bermudan waters. Moving to the future, the paper will illustrate how such an AUV could be used in the offshore industry for survey, monitoring and emergency response. Finally, we will describe the present Autosub development programme, scheduled to deliver an operational 1000 km, 1600 m vehicle by mid 2000. Introduction The Autosub AUV was conceived as a survey vehicle to complement research ship programs by the provision of a cost effective tool to collect water column and seafloor information. Included within the design brief was the aim to address the widest possible scientific community hence allowing varied missions and payloads. This requirement ensured that flexibility was fundamental to the technology design. Hence for Autosub-1 there was no fixed sensor suite, the vehicle sub-systems were modular and thus offered a simple upgrade path as new technologies became available. One other by-product which is envisaged but not yet proven is the opportunity to change the vehicle characteristics i.e. size and shape, without a major re-design program. (Fig 1) The first vehicle, Autosub -1 was constructed in 8 months, being completed in May 1996. The short production cycle was only possible because of the extensive development programme which had been underway for the previous 5 years. The first phase saw Autosub-1 progress from its first 'in water' missions in Empress Dock, Southampton, (June 1996) to completion of the acceptance trials in just under one year (April 1997) Oban 97 The Autosub performance and acceptance trial criteria have been described by Millard et al (1), the main objectives were:Profiling autonomously from close to the surface to near the seabed in at least 100m of water;Mission lengths of at least 6 hours, with satellite fixes updating the dead reckoning(DR) vehicle navigation; andCollection of meaningful scientific data.

Abstract:This manuscript reports on a robot called Clio that we developed to facilitate basin-scale studies of ocean microbial communities and their biochemistry, to better understand how marine microorganisms regulate ocean and Earth system environmental cycles. Clio is designed to facilitate global-scale studies of ocean biochemistry, to move vertically through the water column with high precision, and specifically to return sensor data and samples from large swaths of the ocean ranging in depths from the surface to 6,000 m. Clio is capable of flexible, precise vertical motion that few other ocean robots can perform, and none to our knowledge over this depth range. We tested Clio extensively over several years, six cruises, and 26 dives, it is now fully operational and this manuscript describes all that we did to convince ourselves this was so. In June 2019, it completed its first large-scale ocean survey, and for which this manuscript will be the first data presentation.
The Discovery of U-166: Rewriting History with New Technology

Abstract:Abstract During World War II, Hitler sent several of Germany's Uboats to the Gulf of Mexico to conduct warfare on merchant shipping and halt petroleum shipments. In less than a year, fifty-six merchant vessels were sunk and several others were severely damaged. During that entire operation only one Uboat was lost in the Gulf of Mexico. That U-boat was the U- 166. Since 1942 the U-166 was thought to have been sunk by the U.S. Coast Guard south of Isle Dernieres, Louisiana in the South Timbalier Area. Numerous surveys have crossed the area, but no trace of the U-166 was ever identified until recently. In 2001, C & C Technologies, Inc. (C & C) began using the HUGIN 3000 AUV for offshore oil and gas surveys in the Gulf of Mexico. While conducting a pipeline survey for BP Exploration and Production Inc. (BP) and Shell International (Shell), C & C's marine archaeologists identified a sonar target in the vicinity of the shipwreck, Robert E. Lee, which they thought might be the long sought after German U-boat, U-166. The oil companies approved further investigation with the HUGIN 3000, which revealed spectacular sonar and multibeam bathymetry images lending further evidence to the U-boat hypothesis. On May 31 a research team from C & C, the Minerals Management Service, BP, and Shell conducted an ROV investigation of the site confirming the identity and location of U-166 and its last victim, the Robert E. Lee. Introduction In January 2001, BP and Shell contracted C & C to survey a route for the Okeanos pipeline. In doing so BP and Shell supported the use of a newly developed deepwater survey vehicle. C & C would use their new HUGIN 3000 AUV, a state of the art deep-water survey vehicle. This AUV carries a full array of survey instruments and is capable of faster and more accurate surveys than conventional deep-tow systems. The oil companies willingness to take advantage of this new technology lead to an astounding discovery that helped solve a captivating historical mystery in the Gulf of Mexico. The HUGIN 3000 AUV (High Precision Untethered Geosurvey and Inspection System, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) is a third generation AUV by Kongsberg Simrad and the first commercially operated AUV capable of surveying to 3000 meters water depth. The HUGIN 3000 is the result of the cooperative efforts of C & C and Simrad, and was developed out of a commitment from BP for next generation survey technology.1 This AUV is integrated with a multiinstrument survey payload consisting of a Simrad EM 2000 (200 kHz) swath bathymetry system, dual frequency Edgetech Chirp side scan sonar (120 kHz and 410 kHz), and an Edgetech Chirp subbottom profiler. Because it is an untethered system, running on internal power, it can operate even in rough seas at faster speeds with greater mobility and accuracy than conventional towed arrays.

Abstract:Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) have a wide range of applications in marine geoscience, and are increasingly being used in the scientific, military, commercial, and policy sectors. Their ability to operate autonomously of a host vessel makes them well suited to exploration of extreme environments, from the world's deepest hydrothermal vents to beneath polar ice sheets. They have revolutionised our ability to image the seafloor, providing higher resolution seafloor mapping data than can be achieved from surface vessels, particularly in deep water. This contribution focuses on the major advances in marine geoscience that have resulted from AUV data. The primary applications are i) submarine volcanism and hydrothermal vent studies, ii) mapping and monitoring of low-temperature fluid escape features and chemosynthetic ecosystems, iii) benthic habitat mapping in shallow- and deep-water environments, and iv) mapping of seafloor morphological features (e.g. bedforms generated beneath ice or sediment-gravity flows). A series of new datasets is presented that highlight the growing versatility of AUVs for marine geoscience studies, including i) multi-frequency acoustic imaging of trawling impacts on deep-water coral mounds, iii) collection of high-resolution seafloor photomosaics at abyssal depths, and iii) velocity measurements of active submarine density flows. Future developments in AUV technology of potential relevance to marine geoscience include new vehicles with enhanced hovering, long endurance, extreme depth, or rapid response capabilities, while development of new sensors will further expand the range of geochemical parameters that can be measured.

Abstract:An in situ chemical sensor system has been developed owing to a continuous effort involving lab and field-testing over the past ten years. The sensor has been used successfully to simultaneously measure pH, dissolved H2, and dissolved H2S concentrations in seafloor hot spring fluids at temperature and pressure conditions up to 380degC and 250 bars. Abstract:BackgroundThe Mariana Trench is the deepest known site in the Earth’s oceans, reaching a depth of ~ 11,000 m at the Challenger Deep. Recent studies reveal that hadal waters harbor distinctive microbial planktonic communities. However, the genetic potential of microbial communities within the hadal zone is poorly understood.ResultsHere, implementing both culture-dependent and culture-independent methods, we perform extensive analysis of microbial populations and their genetic potential at different depths in the Mariana Trench. Unexpectedly, we observed an abrupt increase in the abundance of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria at depths > 10,400 m in the Challenger Deep. Indeed, the proportion of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria at > 10,400 m is the highest observed in any natural environment on Earth. These bacteria were mainly Oleibacter, Thalassolituus, and Alcanivorax genera, all of which include species known to consume aliphatic hydrocarbons. This community shift towards hydrocarbon degraders was accompanied by increased abundance and transcription of genes involved in alkane degradation. Correspondingly, three Alcanivorax species that were isolated from 10,400 m water supplemented with hexadecane were able to efficiently degrade n-alkanes under conditions simulating the deep sea, as did a reference Oleibacter strain cultured at atmospheric pressure. Abundant n-alkanes were observed in sinking particles at 2000, 4000, and 6000 m (averaged 23.5 μg/gdw) and hadal surface sediments at depths of 10,908, 10,909, and 10,911 m (averaged 2.3 μg/gdw). The δ2H values of n-C16/18 alkanes that dominated surface sediments at near 11,000-m depths ranged from − 79 to − 93‰, suggesting that these sedimentary alkanes may have been derived from an unknown heterotrophic source.ConclusionsThese results reveal that hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms are present in great abundance in the deepest seawater on Earth and shed a new light on potential biological processes in this extreme environment.

Abstract:Abstract Limitations of access have long restricted exploration and investigation of the cavities beneath ice shelves to a small number of drillholes. Studies of sea-ice underwater morphology are limited largely to scientific utilization of submarines. Remotely operated vehicles, tethered to a mother ship by umbilical cable, have been deployed to investigate tidewater-glacier and ice-shelf margins, but their range is often restricted. The development of free-flying autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) with ranges of tens to hundreds of kilometres enables extensive missions to take place beneath sea ice and floating ice shelves. Autosub2 is a 3600 kg, 6.7 m long AUV, with a 1600 m operating depth and range of 400 km, based on the earlier Autosub1 which had a 500 m depth limit. A single direct-drive d.c. motor and five-bladed propeller produce speeds of 1–2 m s −1 . Rear-mounted rudder and stern-plane control yaw, pitch and depth. The vehicle has three sections. The front and rear sections are free-flooding, built around aluminium extrusion space-frames covered with glass-fibre reinforced plastic panels. The central section has a set of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic pressure vessels. Four tubes contain batteries powering the vehicle. The other three house vehicle-control systems and sensors. The rear section houses subsystems for navigation, control actuation and propulsion and scientific sensors (e.g. digital camera, upward-looking 300 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler, 200 kHz multibeam receiver). The front section contains forward-looking collision sensor, emergency abort, the homing systems, Argos satellite data and location transmitters and flashing lights for relocation as well as science sensors (e.g. twin conductivity–temperature–depth instruments, multibeam transmitter, sub-bottom profiler, AquaLab water sampler). Payload restrictions mean that a subset of scientific instruments is actually in place on any given dive. The scientific instruments carried on Autosub are described and examples of observational data collected from each sensor in Arctic or Antarctic waters are given (e.g. of roughness at the underside of floating ice shelves and sea ice).
