Abstract:The dynamics of the Jovian magnetosphere is controlled by the interplay of the planet's fast rotation, its solar-wind interaction and its main plasma source at the Io torus, mediated by coupling processes involving its magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere. At the ionospheric level, these processes can be characterized by a set of parameters including conductances, field-aligned currents, horizontal currents, electric fields, transport of charged particles along field lines including the fluxes of electrons precipitating into the upper atmosphere which trigger auroral emissions, and the particle and Joule heating power dissipation rates into the upper atmosphere. Determination of these key parameters makes it possible to estimate the net transfer of momentum and energy between Jovian upper atmosphere and equatorial magnetosphere. A method based on a combined use of Juno multi-instrument data and three modeling tools was developed by Wang et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021ja029469) and applied to an analysis of the first nine orbits to retrieve these parameters along Juno's magnetic footprint. We extend this method to the first 30 Juno science orbits and to both hemispheres. Our results reveal a large variability of these parameters from orbit to orbit and between the two hemispheres. They also show dominant trends. Southern current systems are consistent with the generation of a region of sub-corotating ionospheric plasma flows, while both super-corotating and sub-corotating plasma flows are found in the north. These results are discussed in light of the previous space and ground-based observations and currently available models of plasma convection and current systems, and their implications are assessed.

Abstract:An observation of Jupiter's tidal response is anticipated for the on-going Juno spacecraft mission. We combine self-consistent, numerical models of Jupiter's equilibrium tidal response with observed Doppler shifts from the Juno gravity science experiment to test the sensitivity of the spacecraft to tides raised by the Galilean satellites and the Sun. The concentric Maclaurin spheroid (CMS) method finds the equilibrium shape and gravity field of a rotating, liquid planet with the tide raised by a satellite, expanded in Love numbers ($k_{nm}$). We present improvements to CMS theory that eliminate an unphysical center of mass offset and study in detail the convergence behavior of the CMS approach. We demonstrate that the dependence of $k_{nm}$ with orbital distance is important when considering the combined tidal response for Jupiter. Conversely, the details of the interior structure have a negligible influence on $k_{nm}$, for models that match the zonal harmonics $J_2$, $J_4$ and $J_6$, already measured to high precision by Juno. As the mission continues, improved coverage of Jupiter's gravity field at different phases of Io's orbit is expected to yield an observed value for the degree-2 Love number ($k_{22}$) and potentially select higher--degree $k_{nm}$. We present a test of the sensitivity of the Juno Doppler signal to the calculated $k_{nm}$, which suggests the detectability of $k_{33}$, $k_{42}$ and $k_{31}$, in addition to $k_{22}$. A mismatch of a robust Juno observation with the remarkably small range in calculated Io equilibrium $k_{22}=0.58976\pm0.0001$, would indicate a heretofore uncharacterized dynamic contribution to the tides.

Abstract:The electromagnetic coupling between the Galilean satellites at Jupiter and the planetary ionosphere generates an auroral footprint, which is detected with high spatial resolution in the infrared L band by the Jovian InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) onboard the Juno spacecraft. We report the JIRAM data acquired since 27 August 2016 until 23 May 2022, which are used to compute the average position of the footprint tracks of Io, Europa and Ganymede. The result of the present analysis help to test the reliability of magnetic field models, to calibrate ground‐based observations and to highlight the variability in the footprint positions, which can be used to probe the plasma environment at the orbit of the satellites. The determination of the plasma properties around the moons is particularly relevant to complement the Juno flybys of the moons during its extended mission, and to support the future Juice and Europa Clipper missions. Lastly, we report no clear evidence of the auroral footprint of Callisto, which is likely due to a combination of its low expected brightness and its position very close to the main Jovian aurora.

The Juno Mission as a Probe of Long-Range New Physics

Abstract:Orbits of celestial objects, especially the geocentric and heliocentric ones, have been well explored to constrain new long-range forces beyond the Standard Model (SM), often referred to as fifth forces. In this paper, for the first time, we apply the motion of a spacecraft around Jupiter to probe fifth forces that don't violate the equivalence principle. The spacecraft is the Juno orbiter, and ten of its early orbits already allow a precise determination of the Jovian gravitational field. We use the shift in the precession angle as a proxy to test non-gravitational interactions between Juno and Jupiter. Requiring that the contribution from the fifth force does not exceed the uncertainty of the precession shift inferred from data, we find that a new parameter space with the mass of the fifth-force mediator around $10^{-14}$ eV is excluded at 95% C.L.

Abstract:Abstract The two main ultraviolet‐signatures resulting from the Io‐magnetosphere interaction are the local auroras on Io's atmosphere, and the Io footprints on Jupiter. We study here how Io's daily eclipses affect the footprint. Previous observations showed that its atmosphere collapses in eclipse. While remote observers can observe Io's local auroras briefly when Io disappears behind Jupiter, Juno is able to follow the Io footprint in the unlit hemisphere. Theoretical models of the variability of the energy flux fed into the Alfvén wings, ultimately powering the footprints, are not sufficiently constrained by observations. For the first time, we use observations of Io's footprint from the Ultraviolet Spectrograph (UVS) on Juno recorded as Io went into eclipse. We benchmark the trend of the footprint brightness using observations by UVS taken over Io's complete orbit and find that the footprint emitted power variation with Jupiter's rotation shows fairly consistent trends with previous observations. Two exploitable data sets provided measurements when Io was simultaneously in eclipse. No statistically significant changes were recorded as Io left and moved into eclipse, respectively, suggesting either that (i) Io's atmospheric densities within and outside eclipse are large enough to produce a saturated plasma interaction, that is, in the saturated state, changes in Io's atmospheric properties to first order do not control the total Alfvénic energy flux, (ii) the atmospheric collapse during the Juno observations was less than previously observed, or (iii) additional processes of the Alfvén wings in addition to the Poynting flux generated at Io control the footprint luminosity.Key Points Juno‐UVS observed for the first time the Io footprints while Io went into eclipse The effect of Io's atmospheric collapse on the footprint emitted power is investigated No significant variation of the footprint emitted power is observed during eclipse

The sodium emission detected by Brown (1973) is seen to require a collisional excitation process in Io's atmosphere, while the extended sodium emission measured by Trafton et al. (1974) may require scattering of the planetary radiation by an extended sodium cloud. The sodium is presumably present in bound form on Io's surface, and may be released by a sputtering mechanism proposed by Matson et al. (1974). The ionosphere detected by a radio occultation experiment on Pioneer 10 could be attributed to photoionization of atmospheric sodium, provided Io's atmosphere could sustain significant upward motions during daytime and downward motions during nighttime. The incomplete hydrogen torus observed by Judge and Carlson (1974) in the vicinity of Io appears to require a large supply of hydrogen from the satellite's atmosphere. Effect of a magnetosphere compression on Jovian radio emissions: in situ case study using Juno data

Abstract:During its 53-day polar orbit around Jupiter, Juno often crosses the boundaries of the Jovian magnetosphere (namely the magnetopause and bow shock). From the boundary locations, the upstream solar wind dynamic pressure can be inferred, which in turn illustrates the state of compression or relaxation of the system. The aim of this study is to examine Jovian radio emissions during magnetospheric compressions, in order to determine the relationship between the solar wind and Jovian radio emissions. In this paper, we give a complete list of bow shock and magnetopause crossings (from June 2016 to August 2022), along with some extra informations (e.g. solar wind dynamic pressure and position of the standoff distances inferred from Joy et al. (2002)). We then select two compression events that occur in succession (inferred from magnetopause crossings) and we present a case study of the response of the Jovian radio emissions. We demonstrate that magnetospheric compressions lead to the activation of new radio sources. Newly activated broadband kilometric emissions are observed almost simultaneously to compression of the magnetosphere, with sources covering a large range of longitudes. Decametric emission sources are seen to be activated more than one rotation later only at specific longitudes and dusk local times. Finally, the activation of narrowband kilometric radiation is not observed during the compression phase, but when the magnetosphere is in its expansion phase.

Abstract:Interchange instability is known to drive fast radial transport of electrons and ions in Jupiter's inner and middle magnetosphere. In this study, we conduct a statistical survey to evaluate the properties of energetic particles and plasma waves during interchange events using Juno data from 2016 to 2023. We present representative examples of interchange events followed by a statistical analysis of the spatial distribution, duration and spatial extent. Our survey indicates that interchange instability is predominant at M‐shells from 6 to 26, peaking near 17 with an average duration of minutes and a corresponding M‐shell width of

Abstract:The micro Advanced Stellar Compass is an attitude reference for the MAG investigation onboard Juno. The μASC camera head unit images the star field with a CCD that is also sensitive to particles with enough energy to pass through the camera shielding: >15 MeV electrons and >80 MeV protons. This provides the capability to monitor fluxes of high‐energy particles in Jupiter's magnetosphere. A survey of energetic electron fluxes sampled during the first 47 Juno orbits reveals instances of variations observed when Juno is traversing the M‐shell of the Galilean moons. Juno's traversal of the Europa M‐shell often results in distinctly particle signatures. We present the μASC observations of increased electron flux during the crossing of Europa's plasma wake, and depletion of energetic electron flux on the upstream side. The upstream/downstream differences indicate that the wake environment of Europa drives strong pitch angle scattering on relativistic electrons.

Abstract:The extreme accuracy of Juno radio science data allows us to perform very precise orbit determination experiments. While previous works focused on the estimation of the gravitational field of Jupiter, in this article, we aim to accurately determine the planet's orientation in space. For this purpose, we implement a rotational model of Jupiter, taking into account also its main deformations, as they affect the planet's inertia components. Rotation parameters are estimated simultaneously with all other parameters (especially gravity and tides), in order to obtain a global and coherent solution. In our experiments, we find that Juno data manage to constrain Jupiter's pole direction with an accuracy of around 10−7 radians for the whole duration of the mission, allowing us to improve its long-term ephemerides. Moreover, Juno data provide an upper bound on the maximum displacement between Jupiter's pole and spin axis of less than 10 m, which allows us to investigate possible short-period nutation effects due to, for example, atmospheric and interior processes of the planet.

Abstract:Juno Mission to Jupiter has found closely-packed cyclones at the planet's two poles. The observation that these cyclones coexist in very confined space, with outer rims almost touching each other but without merging, poses a big puzzle. In this work, we present numerical calculations showing that convectively sustained, closely-packed cyclones can form and survive without merging for a very long time in polar region of a deep rotating convection zone (for thousands of planetary rotation periods). Through an idealized application of the inertial stability criterion for axisymmetric circulations, it is found that the large Coriolis parameter near the pole plays a crucial role in allowing the cyclones to be packed closely.

Abstract:Juno has allowed clear, high‐resolution imaging of Io's polar volcanoes using the Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instrument. We have used data from JIRAM's M‐band (4.78 μm) imager from 11 Juno orbits to construct a global map of volcanic flux. This map provides short‐term insight into the spatial distribution of volcanoes and the ways in which high‐ and low‐latitude volcanoes differ. Using spherical harmonic analysis, we quantitatively compare our volcanic flux map to the surface heat flow distribution expected from models of Io's tidal heat deposition (summarized in de Kleer, Park, et al. (2019, https://doi.org/10.26206/d4wc‐6v82). Our observations confirm previously detected systems of bright volcanoes at high latitudes. Our study finds that both poles are comparably active and that the observed flux distribution is inconsistent with an asthenospheric heating model, although the south pole is viewed too infrequently to establish reliable trends.

Abstract:Based on a hybrid model of Europa's magnetospheric interaction, we provide context for the magnetic field perturbations observed by the Juno spacecraft during its only close flyby of the moon in September 2022. By systematically varying the incident flow conditions and the density profile of Europa's atmosphere, we demonstrate that the observed, large‐scale signatures of magnetic field draping are consistent with a dawn‐dusk asymmetry in the moon's neutral envelope. During the flyby, such an asymmetry would have enhanced the magnetic perturbations in Europa's anti‐Jovian hemisphere, explaining why the spacecraft already detected strong field line draping while still several moon radii away. Conversely, a reduced neutral density in the sub‐Jovian hemisphere can explain why the perturbations in the flow‐aligned field component remained nearly constant as Juno approached Europa. While a dawn‐dusk asymmetry in Europa's atmosphere has been predicted by theoretical work, our results provide the first in situ hints of its presence.

Abstract:Juno flew over the northern mid‐latitudes of Ganymede during orbit 34 of the Juno mission, reaching an altitude of 1,053 km (16:56:07.972 UTC) at a sub spacecraft latitude/longitude of 33.66N, 57.5W degrees on 7 June 2021. Between 16:43 and 17:02 UT, Juno pierced Ganymede's magnetosphere at a velocity relative to Ganymede of 18.57 km s−1. Juno's instrumentation provided a unique opportunity to sample the local environment of Ganymede and its magnetosphere. We present measurements of the composition of the polar ionospheric outflow and the energetic electrons that penetrate Ganymede's atmosphere and produce its aurora. When these new observations are combined with modeling, conclusions can be drawn that affect our understanding of the atmosphere of Ganymede. The measured JADE precipitating plasma electrons provide an energy flux beyond that needed to create the observed oxygen emissions measured by UVS, but the electron energy spectrum is optically thin to the sparse atmosphere and does not provide the observed oxygen ultraviolet emission unless the O2 column density is increased by over an order of magnitude compared to previous atmospheric models. More than 99% of the electron energy flux passes through the atmosphere into the ice, thereby increasing the H2 and O2 content of the atmosphere. The increased H2 and O2 production is largely responsible for increasing the oxygen column density to a level that produces within known uncertainties the OI135.6 and OI130.4 nm emissions when bombarded by the electron energy flux observed by JADE. This suggests that past modeling efforts have underestimated the density of the atmosphere by over an order of magnitude.

Abstract:Jupiter and its moons form a complex dynamical system that includes several coupling dynamics at different frequencies. In particular, the Laplace resonance is fundamental to maintaining the energy dissipation that sustain Io’s volcanic activity and Europa’s subsurface ocean; studying its stability is thus crucial for characterizing the potential habitability of these moons. The origin and evolution of the Laplace resonance is driven by the strong tidal interactions between Jupiter and its Galilean moons, and the future planetary exploration missions JUICE and Europa Clipper could bring new light to this unsolved mechanism. During the Jupiter tours of both missions and JUICE’s Ganymede orbital phase, two-way radiometric range and Doppler data will be acquired between Earth ground stations and the spacecraft, which will be processed to recover the static and time-varying gravity field of the moons. Moreover, range and Doppler data will improve the orbit accuracy of the moons, providing precise measurements of Jupiter’s tidal parameters. This work presents a covariance analysis of the joint orbit determination of JUICE and Europa Clipper, aimed at quantifying the expected uncertainties on the main parameters that characterize the dynamics of the Jupiter system. We simulated radio science data from JUICE and Clipper missions under conservative noise assumptions, using a multi-arc approach to estimate the ephemerides and dissipation in the system. Even though JUICE and Europa Clipper will not perform flybys of Io, the strong coupling with Europa and Ganymede will allow an improvement of our knowledge of the Jupiter-Io dissipation parameters thanks to JUICE and Europa Clipper radiometric data. Moreover, the expected uncertainty in Jupiter’s dissipation at the frequency of Callisto could unveil a potential resonance locking mechanism between Jupiter and Callisto.
