Abstract:A kind of high Fluorine-containing poly(aryl ether) without side reaction was synthesized in a two-step synthesis. Its structure was confirmed by FTIR, H-1 NMR and F-19 NMR. The polymer shows an excellent thermal stability, good solubility, low water absorption, low dielectric constant and low refractive index. Flexible and transparant thin film can be easily obtained by compression moulding or solution casting. The polymer would be a promising material used for, microelectronics and waveguide devices.

Abstract:The intrinsically rigid and limited strain of most conjugated polymers has encouraged us to optimize the extensible properties of conjugated polymers. Herein, learning from the hydrogen bonds in glucose, which were facilitated to the toughness enhancement of cellulose, we introduced interchain hydrogen bonds to polydiarylfluorene by amide-containing side chains. Through tuning the copolymerization ratio, we systematically investigated their influence on the hierarchical condensed structures, rheology behavior, tensile performances, and optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers. Compared to the reference copolymers with a low ratio of amide units, copolymers with 30% and 40% amide units present a feature of the shear-thinning process that resembled the non-Newtonian fluid, which was enabled by the interchain dynamic hydrogen bonds. Besides, we developed a practical and universal method for measuring the intrinsic mechanical properties of conjugated polymers. We demonstrated the significant impact of hydrogen bonds in solution gelation, material crystallization, and thin film stretchability. Impressively, the breaking elongation for P4 was even up to ~30%, which confirmed the partially enhanced film ductility and toughness due to the increased amide groups. Furthermore, polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) based on these copolymers presented comparable performances and stable electroluminescence (EL). Thin films of these copolymers also exhibited random laser emission with the threshold as low as 0.52 μ J/cm 2 , suggesting the wide prospective application in the field of flexible optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:A series of well-defined 9,9'-dihexylfluorene-co-fluorenone copolymers with various fluorenone contents and a set of monodisperse oligofluorenes in the chain center have been developed through the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. The structure-property relationships, especially the effect of fluorenone moieties on the photophysical and electroluminescent properties of these materials, are systematically investigated to elucidate the exact origin of the low-energy emission in polyfluorenes. On the basis of our substantial studies of the steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and PL decay dynamics of the fluorenone-containing oligomers and copolymers both in dilute solutions and in thin films, the origin of the controversial low-energy emission band might be due to the interaction between intrachain fluorenone moieties in polyfluorenes instead of the intermolecular aggregates or excimers. We further show that fluorene pentamer with a central fluorenone unit ( oligomer 2) is more appropriate to represent the actual chromophore responsible for the green emission in the copolymers. The green emission of the copolymers in the solid states is well described by single-exponential decay and has a lifetime ranging from 4.21 to 8.15 ns, depending on fluorenone content. The substantially enhanced intensity of the green emission with increasing the intermolecular interaction in solid states results from the contribution of both the intramolecular and the more efficient intermolecular energy transfer from the fluorene segments to fluorenone moieties. We also find that the emission wavelength and the lifetime of the green emission for the copolymer with the lowest fluorenone content (PHF-FO0.1) in solid states are very similar to those of the emerging low-energy emission for poly(9,9'-dihexylfluorene) (PDHF) after high-temperature thermal annealing in air. Bright yellow electroluminescence (EL) is achieved from double-layer LEDs based on these materials with an emission peak of 540-579 nm that steadily red-shifted with increasing fluorenone contents. The better luminance and external quantum efficiencies are probably due to improved electron injection and carrier transporting as well as efficient charge trapping and recombination at the fluorenone sites.

Abstract:To realize linear-like dielectric characteristics in normal ferroelectric poly(vinylidene-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)), poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) was grafted onto poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) as side chains. The introduction of rigid PEMA segments resulted in the decreased crystallinity, crystal and ferroelectric domain size. As a result, reduced dielectric loss and improved modulus, therefore enhanced breakdown strength was obtained in the graft copolymers. Moreover, low energy loss (about 16.6%) and relatively high energy density (19.3 J cm−3) under high electric field (675 MV m−1) was achieved since the hysteresis induced by the ferroelectric relaxation of P(VDF-TrFE) has been completely eliminated.

Abstract:Poly(silylene arylether arylacetylene) (PSEA) resin is a promising material for preparing an advanced wave‐transparent composite because of excellent thermal stability and good dielectric properties. Herein, a novel poly(silylene arylether arylacetylene) resin with trifluoromethyl groups (PSEAF) was synthesized by Grignard coupling reaction, and the effects of the incorporation of trifluoromethyl groups on various properties of PSEAF resin and quartz fiber reinforced composites were investigated. Compared to PSEA, the PSEAF resin exhibits better solubility and processability, and lower apparent activation energy for curing reactions. After thermal curing reactions, the PSEAF resin converts to an amorphous crosslinked network with the temperature at 5% weight loss (Td5) around 470 °C. The cured PSEAF resin possesses improved mechanical properties and dielectric properties. The flexural strength arrives at 64.4 MPa, and the dielectric constant (ε) and dielectric loss (tanδ) at 30 MHz are 2.75 and 4.3 × 10−3, respectively. Besides, the quartz fiber reinforced PSEAF composite simultaneously shows ε of 3.3, theoretical wave transmittance |T|2 of 91.4% at 7 GHz, and flexural strength of 350 MPa.

Abstract:The effects of fluorine substitutions on the molecular geometry and optoelectronic properties were investigated based on the conjugated molecular framework consisting of the mono-fluorinated benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole unit. The two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of model compounds indicated that the fluorine substitution can significantly change the chemical environment of the adjacent hydrogen atoms, which was in consistence with the changed molecular geometry as indicated by single crystal diffractions and theoretical calculations. Based on an AB type of monomer, the regioregular conjugated polymer with specifically oriented fluorine along the vector of the polymer backbone was constructed. The UV vis absorption, photoluminescent, and electroluminescent spectra demonstrated the slightly hypsochromic shift of the copolymer comprising the fluorine substitution relative to the non-fluorinated counterpart. Of particular interest is that the copolymer based on the fluorinated benzothiadiazole unit exhibited electron-dominant charge transportation, for which the electron mobility is about 1 order of magnitude higher than that of hole mobility.

Abstract:Exploration of novel polymer dielectrics exhibiting high electric-field stability and high energy density with high efficiency at elevated temperatures is urgently needed for ever-demanding energy-storage technologies. Conventional high-temperature polymers with conjugated backbone structures cannot fulfill this demand due to their deteriorated performance at elevated electric fields. Here, in search of new polymer structures, we have explored the effect of fluorine groups on the energy-storage properties of polyoxanorbornene imide polymers with simultaneous wide band gap and high glass transition temperature (Tg). The systematic synthesis of polymers with varying amounts of fluorine is carried out and characterized for the energy-storage properties. The incorporation of fluorine imparts flexibility to the polymer structure, and free-standing films can be obtained. An oxanorbornene copolymer with 25% fluorination exhibits a high breakdown strength of 700 MV/m and a discharged energy density of 6.3 J/cm3 with 90% efficiency. The incorporation of fluorine helps to increase the polymer band gap, as observed using UV-vis spectroscopy, but lowers the polymer Tg, as shown by differential scanning calorimetry. Both the displacement-electric field (D-E) hysteresis loop and high-field conduction measurements show increased conduction loss for polymers with higher fluorine content, despite their larger band gap. The presence of excess free volume may play a key role in increasing the conduction current and lowering the efficiency of polymers with high fluorine content. Such an improved understanding of the effect of fluorination on the polymer energy-storage properties, as revealed in this systematic molecular engineering study, broadens the basis of material-informatic proxies to enable a more targeted codesign of scalable and efficient polymer dielectrics.

Abstract:Dielectric response of polymer dielectrics determines their applications in electronic devices. Although fluoropolymers were widely accepted in communication technology, electronic packing and electrical insulating for their extraordinary dielectric properties, the underlying effect of fluorine hybridization on the dielectric response of polymers is still unclear. Here, surface fluorination was conducted to construct fluorine hybrid epoxy resin (EP), and the dielectric response of EP before and after fluorination was studied. It was found that at low temperature, the electronic polarization was dominated on the dielectric response. The fluorine hybridization reduced the electronic polarization, which led to a lower permittivity of the fluorinated EP. However, at a higher temperature, the fluorine hybridization increased the thermal expansion coefficient and enlarged the free volume fraction, which allowed flexible reorientations of dipoles and led to an enhanced dipolar polarization, and thus, it proved an enhanced permittivity for fluorinated EP. Therefore, the effect of fluorine hybridization on dielectric response of EP polymers was temperature-dependent, with the low-temperature-dominated electronic polarization and high-temperature-dominated dipolar polarization, respectively. This work revealed the influence of fluorine hybridization on dielectric response of epoxy polymers and could promote the application of organic dielectrics in communication and electronic devices.

Abstract:A series of fluorene-fluorenone copolymers constituted by 9,9-di(3,6,9-trioxadecyl)-fluorene and 9-fluorenone moieties in different molar ratios have been synthesized by Yamamoto coupling reactions. By means of the UV-Vis and PL emission spectra of solution and solid state film, the effect of fluorenone acting as an energy acceptor on the energy transfer process and the photophysics of the copolymers was investigated. In dilute solution, the fluorescence of the polyfluorene backbone was dominant and the energy transfer depended on the polymer concentration strongly. The energy transfer efficiency of the thin film was enhanced rapidly with increasing the fluorenone content and the phenomenon became more distinct after being annealed.

Abstract:High thermal conductivity polymeric dielectrics with advanced dielectric properties are urgently demanded in various applications. In this study, a series of thermoplastic polyesters containing different content of fluorine and mesogenic unit in main chains are synthesized utilizing polycondensation. The preferred orientation of liquid crystal can effectively inhibit phonon scattering, and the introduction of fluorine can reduce the polarizability of the polymer and increase the free volume. By introducing the biphenyl mesogenic unit and fluorine into the main chain, its thermal conductivity has been increased to 0.425 from 0.183 Wm−1k−1(the polymer without liquid crystal element), which is 132% higher than that of the liquid crystal polymer without fluorine. In addition, the dielectric constant of polyester decreased to 2.97, and the dielectric loss drops to 8.74 × 10−4. The influence mechanism of two ways on its thermal and dielectric properties is explored. Abstract:This study reports on a series of crosslinked poly(arylene ether)s with POSS in the main chain. The fluorinated and terminated poly(arylene ether)s were first synthesized by the nucleophilic reaction of diphenol POSS and decafluorodiphenyl monomers, including decafluorobiphenyl, decaflurobenzophenone, and decafluorodiphenyl sulfone. They were then reacted with 3-hydroxyphenyl acetylene to produce phenylacetylene-terminated poly(arylene ether)s. The polymers were of excellent processability. When heated to a high temperature, the polymers converted into a crosslinked network, exhibiting a low range of dielectric constant from 2.17 to 2.58 at 1 HMz, strong resistance against chemical solutions, low dielectric losses, and good thermal and hydrophobic properties.

Abstract:Incorporating long‐chain side groups enhances processing toughness and polarity, while effectively leveraging the fluorine effect to mitigate the typical decrease in breakdown strength and increase in energy loss observed in glassy polymers, thereby effectively resolving the longstanding paradox between high energy storage and optimal processing performance in this material. Establishing a harmonious equilibrium between high energy storage, minimal energy loss, and exceptional processability presents a formidable challenge within the realm of dielectric polymers. To address this challenge, harnessing the characteristics of long‐chain side groups to enhance polarity and toughness, as well as the fluorine effect to improve insulation and efficiency, a random copolymer, poly(4‐fluorostyrene‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (P(FS‐3FEMA)), is successfully synthesized via copolymerization of fluorine‐containing monomers, namely 4‐fluorostyrene (FSt) and trifluoroethyl methacrylate (3FEMA). Experimental findings demonstrate that elongating side chains enhances polymer toughness, boosts polarization strength, and self‐healing capacity. Introducing fluorine atoms into side chains maintains toughness while marginally increasing polymer chain spacing, reducing relaxation loss induced by dipole reorientation under an applied electric field. Additionally, fluorine incorporation enhances electron capture, effectively reducing leakage loss and the likelihood of thermal and electrical breakdown. Ultimately, the copolymer exhibits exceptional performance, characterized by extraordinarily high energy storage (Ue = 18.3 J cm−3), minimal energy loss (efficiency exceeding 89%), and enhanced toughness (increased by over 112%). This study presents a novel approach that harnesses the fluorine effect to reconcile the conflicting requirements of high energy storage, minimal energy loss, and exceptional processability in polymer dielectrics.

Abstract:Soluble fluorene-based alternating copolymers containing benzene as the comonomer were synthesized and characterized, in which three different side chains (hydrogen atom, linear octyloxy and bulky benzyloxy groups) were attached to the phenylene ring. The effect of the side chains with different steric hindrances on the photophysical, thermal and electrochemical properties as well as the morphology were investigated. Moreover, the chain conformation and spectroscopic properties in dilute solution were studied to understand the solvent effect. Aliphatic and aromatic solvents were demonstrated to have different influences on the spectra of the polymers owing to various interaction mechanisms in the excited states. Also, a significant decrease of up to 80 degrees C in the thermal degradation temperature was observed as a result of the introduction of large benzyloxy units. The energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the polymers were estimated to be -5.76 to -5.82 eV and -2.19 to -2.27 eV, respectively, from cyclic voltammetry measurements. Abstract:A series of fluorene-based rod-coil block copolymers with different lengths of fluorine-containing coil segments (poly[2,7-(9,9-dihexylfluorene)]-block-poly (2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl methacrylate), PF-b-PHFBMA) were well designed and successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The thermal behavior, optical properties and surface properties of these rod-coil block copolymers were investigated. The thermal properties of the copolymers presented a good thermal stability, while the optical properties did not show a noticeable dependence on the lengths of the coil segments. In addition, they showed a high dependence on the self-assembly behavior in selective solvents. The surface properties were obviously influenced by the structure of the micelles formed in different selective solvents (i.e. THF, CHCl3 and C2F3Cl3). The incorporation of the fluorine-containing coil segments in the polyfluorene-based polymers yielded a low energy surface and various interesting surface morphologies, which gives the polymers many potential applications.

Abstract:In this work, two fluorinated D-π-A-π-D type monomers, F-EDOT and FF-EDOT, were facilely synthesized by donor-acceptor-donor method via Stille coupling reaction, with monofluorinated benzothiadiazole and difluorinated benzothiadiazole as the acceptor units and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) as the donor units. The electrochemical polymerization behavior of the fluorinated monomers, electrochemical and electrochromic properties of the corresponding fluorinated D-A polymers were compared to study the effects of different fluorine atom numbers on the optoelectronic properties of the monomers and their resultant D-A polymers. The results show that the introduction of more F atoms into the conjugated backbone increases the oxidation potential of monomers, both of them have low initial oxidation potential (0.65 V/0.70 V). As in the case of monomers, the substitution of more F atoms also leads to the decreased HOMO energy level of the polymers, thus leading to the increased band gap energy of P(FF-EDOT) (1.39 eV). This result can be attributed to the deviation of planarity and the reduced effective conjugate length. As prepared fluorinated D-A polymers also have good adhesion on the electrode surface, favorable redox activity, and outstanding redox stability (the redox activity of P(F-EDOT) remains 99 % after 1000 cycles). At the same time, the fluorinated D-A polymers also show distinguish electrochromic properties under various external potentials; both the optical contrast and coloration efficiency decreased with the increase of F atom numbers, and the corresponding response time increased. As a result, both the fluorinated D-A polymers show light green in the neutral state, P(F-EDOT) shows more obvious electrochromic performance in the near infrared region (optical contrast: 35.02 %, coloration efficiency: 159.94 cm 2 C −1 , and quick response time: 0.2 s), accompanied with excellent discoloration stability and optical memory effect. The study of novel fluorinated-based electrochromic materials further expands the selection of acceptor units and the application prospect of electrochromic materials.

Abstract:It is a daunting task to completely eliminate the intrinsic nonlinear ferroelectric behavior of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and simultaneously inherit its high dielectric constant. In the current study, the scalable fabrication of PVDF-based all-organic polymer dielectric films was achieved by melt blending and hot-stretching processes. The inclusion of the 60 vol % polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) component could totally degrade the crystallization ability of PVDF due to the dipole/dipole interactions or hydrogen bonding between the −CF2 groups of PVDF and the carbonyl groups of PMMA, thus significantly decreasing hysteresis loss. The intense extensional flow field was demonstrated to be efficient for inducing highly aligned amorphous dipoles in the PMMA/PVDF composite films, greatly enhancing the dielectric constant and breakdown strength. As a result, a quasilinear dielectric behavior with pretty low remanent polarization of the as-prepared PMMA/PVDF composite films was observed, exhibiting an impressive discharge energy density as high as 17.6 J/cm3 at the electric field of 650 MV/m with a high discharge energy efficiency of 88.0%. Such a high energy density and low hysteresis loss are highly attractive in PVDF or its copolymer-based all-organic dielectric polymer films. The new insight in the relationship between the microscopic amorphous structure and macroscopic dielectric performance is conducive to alleviating the intrinsic nonlinear ferroelectric behavior of PVDF, facilitating its application in the field of film capacitors.
