Abstract:In this paper, we prove the Iwasawa main conjecture for elliptic curves at an odd supersingular prime p. Some consequences are the p-parts of the leading term formulas in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectures for analytic rank 0 or 1.

Abstract:Given an elliptic curve E and a prime p of (good) supersingular reduction, we formulate p-adic analogues of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture using a pair of Iwasawa functions L^\sharp(E,T) and L^\flat(E,T). They are equivalent to the conjectures of Perrin-Riou and Bernardi. We also generalize work of Kurihara and Pollack to give a criterion for positive rank in terms of the value of the quotient between these functions, and derive a result towards a non-vanishing conjecture. We also generalize a conjecture of Kurihara and Pollack concerning the greatest common divisor of the two functions to the general supersingular case.
Anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of abelian varieties of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type at non-ordinary primes II

Abstract:Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime number, $E/\mathbb{Q}$ an elliptic curve with good supersingular reduction at $p$, and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field such that the root number of $E$ over $K$ is $-1$. When $p$ is split in $K$, Castella and Wan formulated the plus and minus Heegner point main conjecture for $E$ along the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$, and proved it for semistable curves. We generalize their results to two settings: 1. Under the assumption that $p$ is split in $K$ but without assuming $a_p(E)=0$, we study Sprung-type main conjectures for $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type abelian varieties at non-ordinary primes and prove it under some conditions. 2. We formulate, relying on the recent work of the first-named author with Kobayashi and Ota, plus and minus Heegner point main conjectures for elliptic curves when $p$ is inert in $K$, and prove the minus main conjecture for semistable elliptic curves. These results yield a $p$-converse to the Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin theorem for $E$. Our method relies on Howard's framework of bipartite Euler system, Zhang's resolution of Kolyvagin's conjecture and the recent proof of Kobayashi's main conjecture.

An unconditional proof of the abelian equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture and applications

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We give an unconditional proof of the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real fields for every admissible one-dimensional $p$-adic Lie extension whose Galois group has an abelian Sylow $p$-subgroup. Crucially, this result does not depend on the vanishing of any $\mu$-invariant. As applications, we deduce the Coates-Sinnott conjecture away from its $2$-primary part and new cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for Tate motives.

On the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of newforms at Eisenstein primes of semistable reduction

Abstract:Let $f$ be a newform of weight $k=2r$ and level $N$ with trivial nebentypus. Let $\mathfrak{p}\nmid 2N$ be a maximal ideal of the ring of integers of the coefficient field of $f$ such that the self-dual twist of the mod-$\mathfrak{p}$ Galois representation of $f$ is reducible with constituents $\phi,\psi$. Denote a decomposition group over the rational prime $p$ below $\mathfrak{p}$ by $G_p$. We remove the condition $\phi|_{G_p} \neq \mathbf{1}, \omega$ from [CGLS22], and generalize their results to newforms of higher weights $2r$ with $r$ being odd. As a consequence, we prove some Iwasawa Main Conjectures and get the $p$-part of the strong BSD Conjecture for elliptic curves of analytic rank $0$ or $1$ over $\mathbf{Q}$ in this setting. In particular, non-trivial $p$-torsion is allowed in the Mordell--Weil group. Using Hida families, we also prove an Iwasawa Main Conjecture for newforms of weight $2$ of multiplicative reduction at Eisenstein primes. In the above situations, we also get $p$-converse to the theorems of Gross--Zagier--Kolyvagin. The $p$-converse theorems have applications to Goldfeld's conjecture in certain quadratic twist families of elliptic curves having a $3$-isogeny.

Iwasawa theory for Rankin-Selberg convolution at an Eisenstein prime

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, $ f$ be a $ p $-ordinary newform of weight $ k $ and $ h $ be a normalized cuspidal $ p $-ordinary Hecke eigenform of weight $ l < k$. In this article, we study the $p$-adic $ L $-function and $ p^{\infty} $-Selmer group of the Rankin-Selberg product of $f$ and $h$ under the assumption that $ p $ is an Eisenstein prime for $ h $ i.e. the residual Galois representation of $ h $ at $ p $ is reducible. We show that the $ p $-adic $ L $-function and the characteristic ideal of the $p^\infty$-Selmer group of the Rankin-Selberg product of $f, h$ generate the same ideal modulo $ p $ in the Iwasawa algebra i.e. the Rankin-Selberg Iwasawa main conjecture for $f \otimes h$ holds mod $p$. As an application to our results, we explicitly describe a few examples where the above congruence holds.

Abstract:We prove an anticyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture proposed by Perrin-Riou for Heegner points for semi-stable elliptic curves E over a quadratic imaginary field K satisfying a certain generalized Heegner hypothesis, at an ordinary prime p. It states that the square of the index of the anticyclotomic family of Heegner points in E equals the characteristic ideal of the torsion part of its Bloch-Kato Selmer group (see Theorem 1.3 for precise statement). As a byproduct we also prove the equality in the Greenberg-Iwasawa main conjecture for certain Rankin-Selberg product (Theorem 1.7) under some local conditions, and an improvement of Skinner's result on a converse of Gross-Zagier and Kolyvagin theorem (Corollary 1.11).
Iwasawa theory of twists of elliptic modular forms over imaginary quadratic fields at inert primes

Abstract:Our primary goal in this article is to study the Iwasawa theory for semi-ordinary families of automorphic forms on $\mathrm{GL}_2\times\mathrm{Res}_{K/\mathbb{Q}}\mathrm{GL}_1$, where $K$ is an imaginary quadratic field where the prime $p$ is inert. We prove divisibility results towards Iwasawa main conjectures in this context, utilizing the optimized signed factorization procedure for Perrin-Riou functionals and Beilinson--Flach elements for a family of Rankin--Selberg products of $p$-ordinary forms with a fixed $p$-non-ordinary modular form. The optimality enables an effective control on the $\mu$-invariants of Selmer groups and $p$-adic $L$-functions as the modular forms vary in families, which is crucial for our patching argument to establish one divisibility in an Iwasawa main conjecture in three variables.

Abstract:This paper is about the Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $\mathbb{Q}^{\text{cyc}}$ of $\mathbb{Q}$. We discuss a deep conjecture of Greenberg that if $E/\mathbb{Q}$ is an elliptic curve with good ordinary reduction at $p$, and $E[p]$ is irreducible as a Galois module, then the Selmer group of $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}^{\text{cyc}}$ has $\mu$-invariant zero. We prove new cases of Greenberg's conjecture for some elliptic curves of analytic rank $0$. The proof involves studying the $p$-adic $L$-function of $E$. The crucial input is a new technique using the Rankin-Selberg method.

A bound on the $μ$-invariants of supersingular elliptic curves

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and let $p$ be a prime of good supersingular reduction. Attached to $E$ are pairs of Iwasawa invariants $\mu_p^\pm$ and $\lambda_p^\pm$ which encode arithmetic properties of $E$ along the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. A well-known conjecture of B. Perrin-Riou and R. Pollack asserts that $\mu_p^\pm=0$. We provide support for this conjecture by proving that for all but finitely many primes, if $\lambda_p^\pm =0$ then $\mu_p^\pm$ is at most 1 or 2, and if $\lambda_p^\pm =1$ then $\mu_p^\pm$ is at most 3 or $p+1+\lceil \frac{p}{\log p}\rceil$, depending on sign. As a corollary, we show that if $E$ has rank 0 then $\mu_p^-\leq 1$ and $\mu_p^+\leq 2$ hold on density 1 set of good supersingular primes.

Abstract:We formulate analogues of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the $p$-adic $L$-functions of Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna attached to elliptic curves $E/\mathbf{Q}$ at primes $p$ of good ordinary reduction. Using Iwasawa theory, we then prove under mild hypotheses one of the inequalities predicted by the rank part of our conjectures, as well as the predicted leading coefficient formula up to a $p$-adic unit. Our conjectures are very closely related to conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type formulated by Bertolini-Darmon in 1996 for certain Heegner distributions, and as application of our results we also obtain the proof of an inequality in the rank part of their conjectures.

$p$-converse theorems for elliptic curves of potentially good ordinary reduction at Eisenstein primes

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbf{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and $p\geq 3$ be a prime. We prove the $p$-converse theorems for elliptic curves of potentially good ordinary reduction at Eisenstein primes (i.e., such that the residual representation $E[p]$ is reducible) when the $p$-Selmer rank is $0$ or $1$. The key step is to obtain the anticyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjectures for an auxiliary imaginary quadratic field $K$ where $E$ does not have CM similar to those in [CGLS22] and descent to $\mathbf{Q}$. As an application we get improved proportions for the number of elliptic curves in quadratic twist families having rank $0$ or $1$.

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve of conductor $N$, $p$ an odd prime of good ordinary reduction such that $E[p]$ is an irreducible $G_{\mathbb{Q}}$-module, and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field with all primes dividing $Np$ split. We prove Iwasawa Main Conjectures for the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-cyclotomic and $\mathbb{Z}_p$-anticyclotomic deformation of $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $K$ respectively, dispensing with any of the ramification hypotheses on $E[p]$ in previous works. Using base change, the proofs are based on Wan's divisibility towards a three-variable main conjecture for $E$ over a quartic CM field containing $K$.

Non-vanishing of Kolyvagin systems and Iwasawa theory

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and $p$ an odd prime. In 1991 Kolyvagin conjectured that the system of cohomology classes for the $p$-adic Tate module of $E$ derived from Heegner points on $E$ over ring class fields of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ is non-trivial. In this paper we prove Kolyvagin's conjecture in the cases where $p$ is a prime of good ordinary reduction for $E$ that splits in $K$ and a $p$-adic anticyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $E/K$ holds. In particular, our results cover many cases where $p$ is an Eisenstein prime, complementing W. Zhang's progress towards the conjecture. Our methods also yield a proof of a refinement of Kolyvagin's conjecture expressing the divisibility index of the $p$-adic Heegner point Kolyvagin system in terms of the Tamagawa numbers of $E$, as conjectured by W. Zhang in 2014, as well as proofs of analogous results for the Kolyvagin systems obtained from the cyclotomic Euler system of Beilinson--Kato elements.

Abstract:Given a prime $p\geq 5$, a conjecture of Greenberg predicts that the $\mu$-invariant of the $p$-primary Selmer group should vanish for most elliptic curves with good ordinary reduction at $p$. In support of this conjecture, I show that the $5$-primary Iwasawa $\mu$- and $\lambda$-invariants simultaneously vanish for an explicit positive density of elliptic curves $E_{/\mathbb{Q}}$. The elliptic curves in question have good ordinary reduction at $5$, and are ordered by their height. The results are proven by leveraging work of Bhargava and Shankar on the distribution of $5$-Selmer groups of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:We study the distribution of ranks of elliptic curves in quadratic twist families using Iwasawa-theoretic methods, contributing to the understanding of Goldfeld's conjecture. Given an elliptic curve $ E/\mathbb{Q} $ with good ordinary reduction at $ 2 $ and $ \lambda_2(E/\mathbb{Q}) = 0 $, we use Matsuno's Kida-type formula to construct quadratic twists $ E^{(d)} $ such that $ \lambda_2(E^{(d)}/\mathbb{Q}) $ remains unchanged or increases by $ 2 $. When the root number of $E^{(d)}$ is $-1$ and the Tate-Shafarevich group $Sha(E^{(d)}/\mathbb{Q})[2^\infty] $ is finite, this yields quadratic twists with Mordell--Weil rank $ 1 $. These results support the conjectural expectation that, on average, half of the quadratic twists in a family have rank $ 0 $ and half have rank $ 1 $. In the cases we consider we obtain asymptotic lower bounds for the number of twists by squarefree numbers $d\leq X$ which match with the conjectured value up to an explicit power of $\log X$. They complement recent groundbreaking results of Smith on Goldfeld's conjecture.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $K$ with supersingular reduction at both primes above $p$ in $K$. Under certain assumptions, we give a growth estimate for the Mordell--Weil rank of $A$ over finite extensions inside the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$. In the last section, written by Chris Williams, he includes some speculative remarks on the $p$-adic $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$ corresponding to the multi-signed Selmer groups constructed in this paper.

Abstract:In this article, we study the Iwasawa theory for cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}(n)\times\mathrm{GL}(n+1)$ over CM fields along anticyclotomic directions, in the framework of the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for unitary groups. We prove one-side divisibility of the corresponding Iwasawa main conjecture: when the global root number is $1$, the $p$-adic $L$-function belongs to the characteristic ideal of the Iwasawa Bloch-Kato Selmer group; when the global root number is $-1$, the square of the characteristic ideal of a certain Iwasawa module is contained in the characteristic ideal of the torsion part of the Iwasawa Bloch-Kato Selmer group (analogous to Perrin-Riou's Heegner point main conjecture).

Abstract:In the present paper, we prove, for a large class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, the existence of an explicit infinite family of quadratic twists with analytic rank $0$. In addition, we establish the $2$-part of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for many of these infinite families of quadratic twists. Recently, Xin Wan has used our results to prove for the first time the full Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for some explicit infinite families of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication.

Abstract:We use Iwasawa theory, at a prime $p$ inert in a quadratic imaginary field $K$, to study the arithmetic properties of mock plectic invariants for elliptic curves of rank two. More precisely, under some minor technical assumptions, we prove that the non-vanishing of the mock plectic invariant $\mathcal{Q}_K$ attached to an elliptic curve $E_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ of even analytic rank $r_\mathrm{an}(E/K)\ge2$, and with multiplicative reduction at $p$, implies that the $p$-Selmer rank $r_p(E/K)$ equals $2$. The proof rests on one inclusion of Perrin-Riou's Heegner point main conjecture for elliptic curves with multiplicative reduction at $p$ which we obtain using bipartite Euler systems.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Consider an odd prime $p$ at which $E$ has good supersingular reduction with $a_p(E)=0$ and which is inert in $K$. Under the assumption that the signed Selmer groups are cotorsion modules over the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we prove that the Mordell-Weil ranks of $E$ are bounded over any subextensions of the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. Additionally, we provide an asymptotic formula for the growth of the $p$-parts of the Tate-Shafarevich groups of $E$ over these extensions.
