Abstract:Importance The prevalence of robotic-assisted anterior abdominal wall (ventral) hernia repair has increased dramatically in recent years, despite conflicting evidence of patient benefit. Whether long-term hernia recurrence rates following robotic-assisted repairs are lower than rates following more established laparoscopic or open approaches remains unclear. Objective To evaluate the association between robotic-assisted, laparoscopic, and open approaches to ventral hernia repair and long-term operative hernia recurrence. Design, Setting, and Participants Secondary retrospective cohort analysis using Medicare claims data examining adults 18 years and older who underwent elective inpatient ventral, incisional, or umbilical hernia repair from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2020. Data analysis was performed from January 2023 through March 2024. Exposure Operative approach to ventral hernia repair, which included robotic-assisted, laparoscopic, and open approaches. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was operative hernia recurrence for up to 10 years after initial hernia repair. To help account for potential bias from unmeasured patient factors (eg, hernia size), an instrumental variable analysis was performed using regional variation in the adoption of robotic-assisted hernia repair over time as the instrument. Cox proportional hazards modeling was used to estimate the risk-adjusted cumulative incidence of operative recurrence up to 10 years after the initial procedure, controlling for factors such as patient age, sex, race and ethnicity, comorbidities, and hernia subtype (ventral/incisional or umbilical). Results A total of 161 415 patients were included in the study; mean (SD) patient age was 69 (10.8) years and 67 592 patients (41.9%) were male. From 2010 to 2020, the proportion of robotic-assisted procedures increased from 2.1% (415 of 20 184) to 21.9% (1737 of 7945), while the proportion of laparoscopic procedures decreased from 23.8% (4799 of 20 184) to 11.9% (946 of 7945) and of open procedures decreased from 74.2% (14 970 of 20 184) to 66.2% (5262 of 7945). Patients undergoing robotic-assisted hernia repair had a higher 10-year risk-adjusted cumulative incidence of operative recurrence (13.43%; 95% CI, 13.36%-13.50%) compared with both laparoscopic (12.33%; 95% CI, 12.30%-12.37%; HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.62-0.94) and open (12.74%; 95% CI, 12.71%-12.78%; HR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.64-0.97) approaches. These trends were directionally consistent regardless of surgeon procedure volume. Conclusions and Relevance This study found that the rate of long-term operative recurrence was higher for patients undergoing robotic-assisted ventral hernia repair compared with laparoscopic and open approaches. This suggests that narrowing clinical applications and evaluating the specific advantages and disadvantages of each approach may improve patient outcomes following ventral hernia repairs.

Abstract:Background: The robotic platform is growing in popularity for hepatobiliary resections. Although the learning curve for basic competency has been reported, this is the first study to analyze the learning curve to achieve long-term mastery on a decade of experience with more than 500 robotic hepatectomies. Methods: After institutional review board approval, 500 consecutive robotic hepatectomies from 2013 to 2023 were analyzed. Cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis using operative duration was used to determine the learning curves. Results: A total of 500 patients were included in this study: composed of 230 men (46.0 %) and 270 women (54.0 %), aged 63.0 (61.0 ± 14.6) years, with a body mass index of 28.0 (29.0 ± 8.0) kg/m2, a Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score of 7 (8 ± 3.0), an albumin-bilirubin score of -3.0 (-3.0 ± 0.6), and a Child-Pugh score of 5.0 (5.0 ± 0.7). Operative duration was 235.0 (260.1 ± 131.9) minutes, estimated blood loss was 100.0 (165.0 ± 208.1) mL, tumor size was 4.0 (5.0 ± 3.5) cm, and 94.0 % of patients achieved R0 margins. The length of hospital stay was 3.0 (4.0 ± 3.7) days, with 4.0 % of patient having major complications. Of note, 30-day readmission was 17.0 %, 30-day mortality was 2.0 %, and 90-day mortality was 3.0 %. On CUSUM analysis, the learning curve for minor resection (n = 215) was 75 cases, major resection (n = 154) was 100 cases, and technically challenging minor resection (n = 131) was 57 cases. Gaining more experience in performing surgical procedures resulted in shorter operative duration, lower blood loss, higher R0 resections, and lower major postoperative complications. Conclusion: The minimum number of robotic hepatectomies to overcome the learning curves for mastery of minor, major, and technically challenging minor resections was significant. Our study can help guide surgeons in their early experience to optimize patient safety and outcomes.
Determining the learning curve of minimally invasive antireflux surgery: systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression

Abstract:The rapid uptake of minimally invasive antireflux surgery has led to interest in learning curves for this procedure. This study ascertains the learning curve in laparoscopic and robotic-assisted antireflux surgery. A systematic review of the literature pertaining to learning curves in minimally invasive fundoplication with or without hiatal hernia repair was performed using PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. A meta-regression analysis was undertaken to identify the number of cases to achieve surgical proficiency, and a meta-analysis was performed to compare outcomes between cases that were undertaken during a surgeon's learning phase and experienced phase. Twenty-five studies met the eligibility criteria. A meta-regression analysis was performed to quantitatively investigate the trend of number of cases required to achieve surgical proficiency from 1996 to present day. Using a mixed-effects negative binomial regression model, the predicted learning curve for laparoscopic and robotic-assisted antireflux surgery was found to be 24.7 and 31.1 cases, respectively. The meta-analysis determined that surgeons in their learning phase may experience a moderately increased rate of conversion to open procedure (odds ratio [OR] 2.44, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.28, 4.64), as well as a slightly increased rate of intraoperative complications (OR 1.60; 95% CI 1.08, 2.38), postoperative complications (OR 1.98; 95% CI 1.36, 2.87), and needing reintervention (OR 1.64; 95% CI 1.16, 2.34). This study provides an insight into the expected caseload to be competent in performing antireflux surgery. The discrepancy between outcomes during and after the learning curve for antireflux surgery suggests a need for close proctorship for learning surgeons.
Learning curves for adoption of robotic bariatric surgery: a systematic review of safety, efficiency and clinical outcomes

Abstract:Robotic bariatric surgery may overcome challenges associated with laparoscopy, potentially achieving technically superior results. This review aims to summarise current literature reporting on learning curves for surgeons newly adopting robotic bariatrics and implications for safety, efficiency and outcomes. A systematic review was performed in line with the PRISMA guidelines. Electronic databases PubMed and MEDLINE were searched and articles reporting on learning curves in robotic bariatric surgery were identified. Studies that reported changes in outcome over time, or learning curves for surgeons newly adopting robotic bariatric surgery were included in this review. Eleven studies reporting on 1237 patients were included in this review. Most surgeons reported prior bariatric surgical experience. Differences were noted regarding the approach and adoption of robotics. Ten studies found significant reduction in operative time, with the shortest learning curve of 11 cases. Reporting of clinical outcomes was limited. Three studies reported statistically significant improvement in outcomes after the learning curve. Long-term outcomes were in line with current literature, though none assessed differences between learning curve groups. Reported learning curves in robotic bariatric surgery is variable, with limited reporting of clinical outcomes. With appropriate mentorship, surgeons can improve efficiency, safety and clinical outcomes, maximising the benefits of minimally invasive surgery.

Abstract:Abstract The surgical complexities of our current population have pushed the technological limits of healthcare, urging for minimally invasive approaches. For ventral hernias, in particular, robotic assisted laparoscopic repairs have been met with conflict. Cost and longer operative times are among the arguments against robotic surgery, although thorough evaluation of patient outcomes could potentially advocate for use of this tool. We attempted to approach this by retrospectively reviewing our own data. We reviewed charts between September 2016 and February 2017 of patients receiving complex hernia repairs, either a standard open repair (SOR) or robotic-assisted repair (RAR). Data collected included preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative care. Of the 43 patients reviewed, 16 were SOR, versus 27 RAR. Patients were comparable in age, gender, BMI, diabetes as a comorbidity; average hernia defect size was similar between the two groups. Although operative times were longer in the RAR group, estimated blood loss (EBL) was less. Hospital stay was also shorter in the RAR group, at 3.0 ± 1.9 days versus 9.6 ± 8.4 days for the OAR group. Of those requiring critical care management, only one patient had a robotic assisted repair, versus half of the patients who received an open repair. Of the patients who presented to the emergency department within 30 days of surgery, each group had four patients, and two from the OAR group required admission. Our data is consistent with other literature supporting shorter lengths of stays. Although the robotic approach did required a longer operative time, the resulting improved patient outcomes support this technique for complex ventral hernia repairs.

Abstract:Background: Although some studies have assessed the learning curve of robotic-assisted total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer, most studies included limited sample sizes, no study used postoperative complications as an independent variable to analyze the learning curve of robotic rectal surgery, and no study evaluated the influence of the learning curve on long-term oncologic outcomes. Methods: Clinical data on consecutive patients who underwent robotic-assisted total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer by a single surgeon between January 2015 and December 2018 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University were retrospectively collected. The cumulative sum (CUSUM) and risk-adjusted cumulative sum (RA-CUSUM) were used to visualize the learning curve of operation time and postoperative complications (CD ≥ grade II). Comparisons of clinical outcomes at different learning phases analyzed by RA-CUSUM were performed after propensity score matching. Results: A total of 389 consecutive patients were included in the analysis. The numbers of patients needed to overcome the learning curves of operation time and postoperative complications of robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer were 34 and 36, respectively. The learning process was divided into two phases based on RA-CUSUM: the learning phase (1st-36th cases) and the mastery phase (37th-389th cases). Before matching, the mastery phase had more patients with older age, lower tumor location, and neoadjuvant therapy. After matching, the two phases exhibited similar characteristics. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative hospital stay, and postoperative complications in the mastery phase were reduced compared with the learning phase, with a median follow-up of 35 months, and the long-term oncologic outcomes were not significantly different between the two phases. Conclusions: An experienced laparoscopic surgeon initially implements robotic-assisted total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer, surgical outcomes improved after 36 cases, and the learning curve seemingly did not have an obvious impact on long-term oncologic outcomes.

Abstract:Introduction: Over the last few decades, there has been an increase in the use of a minimally invasive (MIS) approach for complex hernias involving component separation. A robotic platform provides better visualization and mobilization of tissues for component separation. We aim to assess the outcomes of open and robotic-assisted approaches for large VHR utilizing the ACHQC national database. Methods: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data from the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative (ACHQC) was performed to include all adult patients who had primary and incisional midline ventral hernias larger than 10 cm and underwent elective open and robotic hernia repairs with mesh from January 2013 to March 2023. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed comparing Open and Robotic approaches. Results: The ACHQC database identified 5,516 patients with midline hernias larger than 10 cm who underwent VHR. The open group (OG) had 4,978 patients, and the robotic group (RG) had 538. The RG had a higher median BMI (33.3 kg/m2 (IQR 29.8-38.1) vs 32.7 (IQR 28.7-36.6) (p < 0.001). Median hernia width was 15 cm (IQR 12-18) in the OG and 12 cm in the RG (10-14) (p < 0.001). Sublay positioning of the mesh was the most common. The fascial closure was higher in the RG (524; 97% versus 4,708; 95%-p = 0.005). Median Length of Stay (LOS) was 5 days (IQR 4-7) in the OG and 2 days (IQR 1-3) in the RG (p < 0.001). The readmission rate was higher in the OG (n = 374; 7.5% vs n = 16; 3%; p < 0.001). 30-day SSI were higher in the OG (343; 6.9%% vs 14; 2.6%; p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis identified diabetes (OR 1.6; CI 1.1-2.1; p = 0.006) and BMI (OR 1.04, CI 1.02-1.06; p < 0.001) as predictors of SSIs, while the robotic approach was protective (OR 0.35, CI 0.17-0.64; p = 0.002). For SSO, logistic regression showed BMI (OR 1.04, CI 1.03-1.06; p < 0.001) and smoking (OR 1.8, CI 1.3-2.4; p < 0.001) as predictors Robotic approach was associated with lower readmission rates (OR .04, CI 0.2-0.6; p < 0.001). Conclusion: A robotic approach improves early 30-day outcomes compared to an open technique for large VHR. There was no difference in SSO at 30 days.

Abstract:With the increasing adoption of robotic surgery in clinical practice, institutions intending to adopt this technology should understand the learning curve in order to develop strategies to help its surgeons and operating theater teams overcome it in a safe manner without compromising on patient care. Various statistical methods exist for the analysis of learning curves, of which a cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis is more commonly described in the literature. Variables used for analysis can be classified into measures of the surgical process (e.g., operative time and pathological quality) and measures of patient outcome (e.g., postoperative complications). Heterogeneity exists in how performance thresholds are defined during the interpretation of learning curves. Factors that influence the learning curve include prior surgical experience in colorectal surgery, being in a mature robotic surgical unit, case mix and case complexity, robotic surgical simulation, spending time as a bedside first assistant, and being in a structured training program with proctorship.

Abstract:Background: Minimally invasive surgery in rectal cancer has gained prominence owing to its various advantages in surgical outcomes. Due to rapid adoption of robotics in rectal surgery, we intended to assess the pace in which surgeons gain proficiency using cumulative summation (CUSUM) technique in learning curve.Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study of 262 rectal cancer cases who underwent robotic-assisted low anterior resection and abdominoperineal resection (RA-LAR and RA-APR). Parameters considered for the study were console time, docking time, lymph nodal yield, total operative time and post-operative outcomes. We used Manipal technique of port placements and modified centroside docking for the procedure.Results: The mean age of our study was 46.62 ± 5.7 years, the mean body mass index (BMI) was 31.51 ± 3.2 kg/m<sup>2</sup>. 215 (82.06%) underwent RA-LAR and 47 (17.93%) underwent RA-APR. 2.67% of cases required to open during our initial period. We had three phases of learning curve, initial phase (11<sup>th</sup> case), plateau phase (29<sup>th</sup> case) and then phases of mastery (30<sup>th</sup> case onwards). Our mean total operative time reduced from 5.5 to 3.5 h (210 ± 8.2 min), console time from 4.5 to 2.9 h (174 ± 4.5 min) and docking time from 15 to 9 ± 1 min from 30<sup>th</sup> case onwards.Conclusion: RA surgeries for rectal cancer have got good oncological and functional outcomes in high BMI, male pelvis and low rectal cancers. Learning curve can be shortened with constant self-auditing of the surgeon and team with each surgeries performed, reviewing the steps and by improving techniques.

Abstract:Abstract The surgical management of rectal cancer is shifting toward more widespread use of robotics across a spectrum of medical centers. There is evidence that the oncologic outcomes are equivalent to laparoscopic resections, and the post-operative outcomes may be improved. This study aims to evaluate the learning curve of robotic rectal cancer resections at a community-based teaching institution and evaluate clinical and oncologic outcomes. A retrospective review of consecutive robotic rectal cancer resections by a single surgeon was performed for a five-year period. The cumulative sum (CUSUM) for total operative time was calculated and plotted to establish a learning curve. The oncologic and post-operative outcomes for each phase were analyzed and compared. The CUSUM learning curve yielded two phases, the learning phase (cases 1–79) and the proficiency phase (cases 80–130). The median operative time was significantly lower in the proficiency phase. The type of neoadjuvant therapy used between the two groups was statistically different, with chemoradiation being the primary regimen in the learning phase and total neoadjuvant therapy being more common in the proficiency phase. Otherwise, oncologic and overall post-operative outcomes were not significantly different between the groups. Robotic rectal resections can be done in a community-based hospital system by trained surgeons with outcomes that are favorable and similar to larger institutions.

We retrospectively collected data from 100 patients who underwent segmentectomy via fused robot-assisted thoracoscopy at our institution between September 2020 and February 2024. Abstract:Background: The robotic surgical system is being used in various bariatric procedures. However, only a few studies with very small sample size are present on robotic single-anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S). Moreover, to date, the learning curve of robotic SADI-S has been poorly evaluated yet. Objective: This retrospective study aimed to estimate the learning curve of robotic SADI-S. Methods: 102 consecutive patients who underwent robotic SADI-S between March 2020 and December 2021 were included. Textbook outcome standard was performed to comprehensively evaluate clinical outcome of robotic SADI-S. Based on the textbook outcome, we evaluated the learning curve of robotic SADI-S by the cumulative sum (CUSUM) method. Results: The mean operative time was 186.13 ± 36.91 min. No conversion to laparotomy or deaths occurred during the study period. The rate of complications was 6.9% (n = 7), of which major complications were identified in 2.9% (n = 3), including 2 gastric leakages and 1 respiratory failure. A total of 60 patients reached the textbook outcome standard. The rate of textbook outcome was positive and was steadily increasing after the number of surgical cases accumulated to the 58th case. Taking the 58th case as the boundary, all the patients were divided into the learning stage group (the first 58 patients) and mastery stage group (the last 44 patients). The rate of complications, proportion of abdominal drainage tubes and postoperative hospital stay were significantly higher in the learning stage group compared with the mastery stage group (P < 0.05). No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of patient demographic data, operative times, reoperations and readmission. Conclusion: Robotic SADI-S is a feasible and reproducible surgical technique with a learning curve of 58 cases.
Clinical outcomes and cost of robotic ventral hernia repair: systematic review

Abstract:Abstract Background Robotic ventral hernia repair (VHR) has seen rapid adoption, but with limited data assessing clinical outcome or cost. This systematic review compared robotic VHR with laparoscopic and open approaches. Methods This systematic review was undertaken in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched for articles with terms relating to ‘robot-assisted’, ‘cost effectiveness’, and ‘ventral hernia’ or ‘incisional hernia’ from 1 January 2010 to 10 November 2020. Intraoperative and postoperative outcomes, pain, recurrence, and cost data were extracted for narrative analysis. Results Of 25 studies that met the inclusion criteria, three were RCTs and 22 observational studies. Robotic VHR was associated with a longer duration of operation than open and laparoscopic repairs, but with fewer transfusions, shorter hospital stay, and lower complication rates than open repair. Robotic VHR was more expensive than laparoscopic repair, but not significantly different from open surgery in terms of cost. There were no significant differences in rates of intraoperative complication, conversion to open surgery, surgical-site infection, readmission, mortality, pain, or recurrence between the three approaches. Conclusion Robotic VHR was associated with a longer duration of operation, fewer transfusions, a shorter hospital stay, and fewer complications compared with open surgery. Robotic VHR had higher costs and a longer operating time than laparoscopic repair. Randomized or matched data with standardized reporting, long-term outcomes, and cost-effectiveness analyses are still required to weigh the clinical benefits against the cost of robotic VHR.

Abstract:IntroductionRobotic-assisted rectal cancer surgery offers multiple advantages for surgeons, and it seems to yield the same clinical outcomes as regards the short-time follow-up of patients compared to conventional laparoscopy. This surgical approach emerges as a technique aiming at overcoming the limitations posed by rectal cancer and other surgical fields of difficult access, in order to obtain better outcomes and a shorter learning curve.Material and methodsA systematic review of the literature of robot-assisted rectal surgery was carried out according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The search was conducted in October 2015 in PubMed, MEDLINE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, for articles published in the last 10 years and pertaining the learning curve of robotic surgery for colorectal cancer. It consisted of the following key words: “rectal cancer/learning curve/robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery”.ResultsA total of 34 references were identified, but only 9 full texts specifically addressed the analysis of the learning curve in robot-assisted rectal cancer surgery, 7 were case series and 2 were non-randomised case-comparison series. Eight papers used the cumulative sum (CUSUM) method, and only one author divided the series into two groups to compare both. The mean number of cases for phase I of the learning curve was calculated to be 29.7 patients; phase II corresponds to a mean number 37.4 patients. The mean number of cases required for the surgeon to be classed as an expert in robotic surgery was calculated to be 39 patients.ConclusionRobotic advantages could have an impact on learning curve for rectal cancer and lower the number of cases that are necessary for rectal resections.

Abstract:Background: Minimally invasive liver surgery (MILS) has a high variance in the type of resection and complexity, which has been underestimated in learning curve studies in the past. The aim of this work was to evaluate complexity-adjusted learning curves over time for laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) and robotic liver resection (RLR).Methods: Cumulative sum analysis (CUSUM) and complexity adjustment were performed using the Iwate score for LLR and RLR (n = 647). Lowest point of smoothed data was used to capture the cutoff of the increase in complexity. Data were collected retrospectively at the Department of Surgery of the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin.Results: A total of 132 RLR and 514 LLR were performed. According to the complexity-adjusted CUSUM analysis, the initial learning phase was reached after 117 for LLR and 93 procedures for RLR, respectively. With increasing experience, the rate of (extended) right hemihepatectomy multiplied from 8.4% to 18.9% for LLR (<i>P</i> = 0.031) and from 21.6% to 58.3% for RLR (<i>P</i> < 0.001). Complication rates remained comparable between both episodes for LLR and RLR (T<sub>1</sub> vs T<sub>2</sub>, <i>P</i> > 0.05). The complexity-adjusted CUSUM analysis demonstrated for blood transfusion, conversion, and operative time an increase during the learning phase (T<sub>1</sub>), while a steady state was reached in the following (T<sub>2</sub>).Conclusions: The learning phase for MILS after adjusting for complexity is about 4 times longer than assumed in previous studies, which should urge caution.
Comparison of the learning curves for robotic left and right hemihepatectomy: A prospective cohort study

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objective</h3><p>Robotic hepatectomy has been continuously improving and shown to be safe and reliable. The learning curve of robotic hemihepatectomy is required which enable beginners to benefit from previous experience. The aim of this study was to assess the learning curve of robotic left (RLH) and right hemihepatectomy (RRH) in terms of operative time (OT) to determine which procedure has an easier learning curve for beginners.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Data records for each 100 consecutive patients who underwent RLH and RRH between July 2012 and May 2019 were collected prospectively and analyzed retrospectively. The data included demographics, OT, estimated blood loss (EBL), postoperative hospital stay (PHS), and rates of morbidity and mortality. The cumulative sum method was used to evaluate the learning curve of OT.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>All patients underwent the RRH and RLH procedure performed by the same surgical team. RRH and RLH learning curve consisted of two phases: the first and second phase. The first phase of RRH included 45 patients, while RLH outcomes were optimized after 35 cases were completed. Compared with the first phase, the mean OT and the median blood loss were decreased significantly in the second phase in both learning curves. No significant decrease in the rates of morbidity and conversion to laparotomy or PHS was observed.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>This study demonstrated the safety and feasibility of RLH and RRH. The surgeons who previously lacked robotic experience are able to overcome the learning curve for RLH faster than RRH.</p>

Abstract:BackgroundThe objective of this study was to evaluate the learning curve effect on the safety and feasibility of robot-assisted liver resection (RALR).MethodsIn 140 consecutive cases, all data about demographic, surgical procedure, postoperative course were collected prospectively and analyzed. Risk-adjusted cumulative sum model was used for determining the learning curve based on the need for conversion.ResultsAmong all 140 patients, no patients suffered from any organ dysfunction postoperatively and the operative mortality was 0%. The CUSUM analysis showed that at the 30th consecutive patient, the open conversion rate reached to the average value, and it further improved thereafter. In the last 70 patients, only 3 patients (4.3%) required conversion and 7 patients (10%) needed blood transfusion. Only 1 patient (1.3%) out of 79 patients with HCC had a positive resection margin. Univariate analyses showed the following risk factors associated with significantly higher risks of conversion (P < 0.05): tumor number > 1, lesions in segments 1/4a/7/8, right posterior sectionectomy, and lesions which were beyond the indications of the Louisville statement. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed that both tumor number > 1 (OR: 2.10, P < 0.05) and right posterior sectionectomy (OR: 11.19, P < 0.01) were risk factors of conversion.ConclusionsThe robotic approach for hepatectomy is safe and feasible. A learning curve effect was demonstrated in this study after the 30th consecutive patient. The long-term oncological outcomes of robotic hepatectomy still need further investigation.
