Abstract:In this note, it is shown that the nilpotency of submatrices of a certain class of adjacency matrices is equivalent to the Collatz conjecture. Our main result extends the previous work of Alves et al. and clarifies a conjecture made by Cardon and Tuckfield.

Abstract:For a skew-symmetrizable cluster algebra ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ with principal coefficients at $t_{0}$, we prove that each seed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}_{t}$ of ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ is uniquely determined by its $C$-matrix, which was proposed by Fomin and Zelevinsky (Compos. Math. 143 (2007), 112–164) as a conjecture. Our proof is based on the fact that the positivity of cluster variables and sign coherence of $c$-vectors hold for ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$, which was actually verified in Gross et al. (Canonical bases for cluster algebras, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 31(2) (2018), 497–608). Further discussion is provided in the sign-skew-symmetric case so as to obtain a weak version of the conjecture in this general case.

This is a well-known result in group theory. In this paper, we prove two analogous theorems on matrices, which have independence significance. Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

An Automated Approach to the Collatz Conjecture

Abstract:We explore the Collatz conjecture and its variants through the lens of termination of string rewriting. We construct a rewriting system that simulates the iterated application of the Collatz function on strings corresponding to mixed binary-ternary representations of positive integers. We prove that the termination of this rewriting system is equivalent to the Collatz conjecture. We also prove that a previously studied rewriting system that simulates the Collatz function using unary representations does not admit termination proofs via natural matrix interpretations, even when used in conjunction with dependency pairs. To show the feasibility of our approach in proving mathematically interesting statements, we implement a minimal termination prover that uses natural/arctic matrix interpretations and we find automated proofs of nontrivial weakenings of the Collatz conjecture. Although we do not succeed in proving the Collatz conjecture, we believe that the ideas here represent an interesting new approach.

Schubert coefficients of sparse paving matroids

Abstract:The Chow class of the closure of the torus orbit of a point in a Grassmannian only depends on the matroid associated to the point. The Chow class can be extended to a matroid invariant of arbitrary matroids. We call the coefficients appearing in the expansion of the Chow class in the Schubert basis the Schubert coefficients of the matroid. These Schubert coefficients are conjectured by Berget and Fink to be non-negative. We compute the Schubert coefficients for all sparse paving matroids, and confirm their non-negativity.

Abstract:This paper studies the level set Crouzeix conjecture, which is a weak version of Crouzeix's conjecture that applies to finite compressions of the shift. Amongst other results, this paper establishes the level set Crouzeix conjecture for several classes of $3\times3$, $4\times4$, and $5\times5$ matrices associated to compressions of the shift via a geometric analysis of their numerical ranges. This paper also establishes Crouzeix's conjecture for several classes of nilpotent matrices whose studies are motivated by related compressions of shifts.

Abstract:The matroidal version of the Merino--Welsh conjecture states that the Tutte polynomial $T_M(x,y)$ of any matroid $M$ without loops and coloops satisfies that $$\max(T_M(2,0),T_M(0,2))\geq T_M(1,1).$$ Equivalently, if the Merino--Welsh conjecture is true for all matroids without loops and coloops, then the following inequalities are also satisfied for all matroids without loops and coloops: $$T_M(2,0)+T_M(0,2)\geq 2T_M(1,1),$$ and $$T_M(2,0)T_M(0,2)\geq T_M(1,1)^2.$$ We show a counter-example for these inequalities.

Abstract:Very recently, Qi and Cui extended the Perron-Frobenius theory to dual number matrices with primitive and irreducible nonnegative standard parts and proved that they have a Perron eigenpair and a Perron-Frobenius eigenpair. The Collatz method was also extended to find the Perron eigenpair. Qi and Cui proposed two conjectures. One is the k-order power of a dual number matrix, which tends to zero if and only if the spectral radius of its standard part is less than one, and another is the linear convergence of the Collatz method. In this paper, we confirm these conjectures and provide the theoretical proof. The main contribution is to show that the Collatz method R-linearly converges with an explicit rate.
Maillet's property and Mahler's Conjecture on Liouville numbers fail for matrices

Abstract:In the early 1900's, Maillet proved that the image of any Liouville number under a rational function with rational coefficients is again a Liouville number. The analogous result for quadratic Liouville matrices in higher dimension turns out to fail. In fact, using a result by Kleinbock and Margulis, we show that among analytic matrix functions in dimension $n\ge 2$, Maillet's invariance property is only true for Möbius transformations with special coefficients. This implies that the analogue in higher dimension of an open question of Mahler on the existence of transcendental entire functions with Maillet's property has a negative answer. On the other hand, extending a topological argument of Erdős, we prove that for any injective continuous self mapping on the space of rectangular matrices, many Liouville matrices are mapped to Liouville matrices. Dropping injectivity, we consider setups similar to Alniaçik and Saias and show that the situation depends on the matrix dimensions $m,n$. Finally we discuss extensions of a related result by Burger to quadratic matrices. We state several open problems along the way.

Abstract:Hilbert's Nullstellensatz is one of the most fundamental correspondences between algebra and geometry, and has inspired a plethora of noncommutative analogs. In last two decades, there has been an increased interest in understanding vanishing sets of polynomials in several matrix variables without restricting the matrix size, prompted by developments in noncommutative function theory, control systems, operator algebras, and quantum information theory. The emerging results vary according to the interpretation of what vanishing means. For example, given a collection of noncommutative polynomials, one can consider all matrix tuples at which the values of these polynomials are all zero, singular, have common kernel, or have zero trace. This survey reviews Nullstellensätze for the above types of vanishing sets, and identifies their structural counterparts in the free algebra.

Abstract:In this note, we propose a simple-looking but broad conjecture about star-algebras over the field of real numbers. The conjecture enables many matrix decompositions to be represented by star-algebras and star-ideals. This paper is written for people with a background in representation theory and module theory. The motivation for investigating this is the possibility of expressing polymorphic algorithms in numerical and theoretical linear algebra. This is similar to but different from algebraic (semiring based) approaches to dynamic programming. We prove certain cases of the conjecture.

Abstract:The 3n+1 problem, or Collatz problem, is an extremely simple to state, extremely hard to solve, problem. A number of Collatz graphs have been presented to visualize the Collatz sequences. The Collatz graph is grown by considering the bottom-up method with the inverse relation. If n is the Collatz functional value of m, then n is connected by m. The concept is simple, the tree-based graphs indeed provide a path starting from n down to the root, the number of 1, for a given seed n, and demonstrate the generated Collatz sequences eventually converges to 1. However, as a general case, due to the irregular structures, no one has yet proved the completeness of the Collatz graphs. By completeness we mean that the Collatz graph contains all positive integers n. This paper proves the Collatz conjecture by constructing a Collatz graph with the regular structure. The developed Collatz graph consists of Collatz nodes located various levels of the graph. In the developed graph, each node consists of all positive integers m which have the functional value n. A set of simple, yet efficient connection rules is also developed to construct the graph. Results show that the developed Collatz graph generates the Collatz trajectories for all positive integers and the sequences converge to 1. This proves the completeness of the developed Collatz graph and Collatz conjecture.
