Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.
On the generic part of the cohomology of non-compact unitary Shimura varieties

Abstract:We prove that the generic part of the mod l cohomology of Shimura varieties associated to quasi-split unitary groups of even dimension is concentrated above the middle degree, extending our previous work to a non-compact case. The result applies even to Eisenstein cohomology classes coming from the locally symmetric space of the general linear group, and has been used in joint work with Allen, Calegari, Gee, Helm, Le Hung, Newton, Taylor and Thorne to get good control on these classes and deduce potential automorphy theorems without any self-duality hypothesis. Our main geometric result is a computation of the fibers of the Hodge-Tate period map on compactified Shimura varieties, in terms of similarly compactified Igusa varieties.

Abstract:We generalize the torsion vanishing results of Caraiani-Scholze and Koshikawa. Our results apply to the cohomology of general Shimura varieties $(\mathbf{G},X)$ of PEL type $A$ or $C$, localized at a suitable maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ in the spherical Hecke algebra at primes $p$ such that $\mathbf{G}_{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}$ is a group for which we know the Fargues-Scholze local Langlands correspondence is the semi-simplification of a suitably nice local Langlands correspondence. This is accomplished by combining Koshikawa's technique, the theory of geometric Eisenstein series over the Fargues-Fontaine curve, the work of Santos describing the structure of the fibers of the minimally and toroidally compactified Hodge-Tate period morphism for general PEL type Shimura varieties of type $A$ or $C$, and ideas developed by Zhang on comparing Hecke correspondences on the moduli stack of $G$-bundles with the cohomology of Shimura varieties. In the process, we also establish a description of the generic part of the cohomology that bears resemblance to the work of Xiao-Zhu. Moreover, we also construct a filtration on the compactly supported cohomology that differs from Manotovan's filtration in the case that the Shimura variety is non-compact, allowing us to circumvent some of the circumlocutions taken by Cariani-Scholze. Our method showcases a very general strategy for proving such torsion vanishing results, and should bear even more fruit once the inputs are generalized. Motivated by this, we formulate an even more general torsion vanishing conjecture.

Abstract:Our main theorem describes the degree 0 cohomology of Igusa varieties in terms of one-dimensional automorphic representations in the setup of mod p Hodge-type Shimura varieties with hyperspecial level at p, mirroring the well known analogue for complex Shimura varieties. As an application, we obtain a completely new approach to two geometric questions. (See Sect. 1.5 for a comparison with independent results by van Hoften and Xiao via a different approach.) Firstly, we verify the discrete part of the Hecke orbit conjecture, which amounts to irreducibility of central leaves, generalizing preceding works by Chai, Oort, Yu, et al. Secondly, we deduce irreducibility of Igusa towers and its generalization to non-basic Igusa varieties in the same generality, extending previous results by Igusa, Ribet, Faltings--Chai, Hida, and others. Our proof is based on a Langlands--Kottwitz-type formula for Igusa varieties due to Mack-Crane, an asymptotic study of the trace formula, and an estimate for unitary representations and their Jacquet modules in representation theory of $p$-adic groups due to Howe--Moore and Casselman.

Abstract:We show that the systems of Hecke eigenvalues that appear in the coherent cohomology with coefficients in automorphic line bundles of any mod $p$ abelian type compact Shimura variety at hyperspecial level are the same as those appearing in any Hecke-equivariant closed subscheme. We also prove analogous results for noncompact Shimura varieties or nonclosed subschemes, such as Ekedahl-Oort strata, length strata and central leaves.

Abstract:We prove a comparison theorem between the étale cohomology of algebraic varieties over Stein compacta and the singular cohomology of their analytifications. We deduce that the field of meromorphic functions in a neighborhood of a connected Stein compact subset of a normal complex space of dimension $n$ has cohomological dimension $n$. As an application of $\textrm{Gal}(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{R})$-equivariant variants of these results, we obtain a quantitative version of Hilbert's 17th problem on compact subsets of real-analytic spaces.

Abstract:If two conical symplectic resolutions $X\to X_0$ and $X^!\to X_0^!$ are symplectic dual, the cohomology ring $H^*(X)$ and the coordinate ring of $\mathbb{C}^*$-fixed points in $X_0^!$ are expected to be isomorphic as graded algebras. This statement is called Hikita conjecture and it is known that the conjecture holds for some cases. In this paper, we deal with the cohomology of framed moduli spaces over the projective plane and the coordinate ring of $\mathbb{C}^*$- fixed points of $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/((\mathbb{Z}/r\mathbb{Z})\wr S_n) $ and show that these are isomorphic as graded vector spaces.

Cohomology of the Bruhat-Tits strata in the supersingular locus of the $\mathrm{GU}(1,n-1)$ Shimura variety at a ramified prime

Abstract:The supersingular locus of the $\mathrm{GU}(1,n-1)$ Shimura variety at a ramified prime $p$ is stratified by Coxeter varieties attached to finite symplectic groups. In this paper, we compute the $\ell$-adic cohomology of the Zariski closure of any such stratum. These are known as closed Bruhat-Tits strata. We prove that the cohomology groups of odd degree vanish, and those of even degree are explicitely determined as representations of the symplectic group with a Frobenius action. Each closed Bruhat-Tits stratum is linearly stratified by Coxeter varieties attached to smaller symplectic groups. Thanks to results of Lusztig who computed the cohomology of Coxeter varieties for classical groups, we make use of the spectral sequence associated to this stratification and describe explicitely all the terms at infinity. We point out that the closed Bruhat-Tits strata have isolated singularities when the dimension is greater than 1. Our analysis requires discussing the smoothness of the blow-up at the singular points, as well as comparing the ordinary $\ell$-adic cohomology with intersection cohomology. A by-product of our computations is that these two cohomologies actually coincide, so that surprisingly the presence of singularities does not interfere with the cohomology.

A cohomological Hasse principle over two-dimensional local rings

Abstract:Let $K$ be the fraction field of a two-dimensional henselian, excellent, equi-characteristic local domain. We prove a local-global principle for Galois cohomology with finite coefficients over $K$. We use classical machinery from étale cohomology theory, drawing upon an idea in Saito's work on two-dimensional local class field theory. This approach works equally well over the function field of a curve over an equi-characteristic henselian discrete valuation field, thereby giving a different proof of (a slightly generalized version of) a recent result of Harbater, Hartmann and Krashen. We also present two applications. One is the Hasse principle for torsors under quasi-split semisimple simply connected groups without $E_8$ factor. The other gives an explicit upper bound for the Pythagoras number of a Laurent series field in three variables. This bound is sharper than earlier estimates.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified and $B$ be a quaternion algebra which splits at at most one infinite place. Let $\overline{r}:\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F)\to \mathrm{GL}_2(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ be a modular Galois representation which satisfies the Taylor-Wiles hypotheses. Assume that for some fixed place $v|p$, $B$ ramifies at $v$ and $F_v$ is isomorphic to $ \mathbb{Q}_p$ and $\overline{r}$ is generic at $v$. We prove that the admissible smooth representations of the quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ coming from mod $p$ cohomology of Shimura varieties associated to $B$ have Gelfand-Kirillov dimension $1$. As an application we prove that the degree two Scholze's functor vanishes on supersingular representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. We also prove some finer structure theorem about the image of Scholze's functor in the reducible case.

Hasse principle for Kummer varieties in the case of generic 2-torsion

Abstract:Conditional on finiteness of relevant Shafarevich--Tate groups, Harpaz and Skorobogatov used Swinnerton-Dyer's descent-fibration method to establish the Hasse principle for Kummer varieties associated to a 2-covering of a principally polarised abelian variety under certain largeness assumptions on its mod 2 Galois image. Their method breaks down however when the Galois image is maximal, due to the possible failure of the Shafarevich--Tate group of quadratic twists of A to have square order. In this work we overcome this obstruction by combining second descent ideas in the spirit of Harpaz and Smith with results on the parity of 2-infinity Selmer ranks in quadratic twist families. This allows Swinnerton-Dyer's method to be successfully applied to K3 surfaces arising as quotients of 2-coverings of Jacobians of genus 2 curves with no rational Weierstrass points.

Abstract:In \cite{Vakil13} Vakil and Wood made several conjectures on the topology of symmetric powers of geometrically irreducible varieties based on their computations on motivic zeta functions. Two of those conjectures are about subspaces of $\Sym^n(\P^1)$. In this note, we disprove one of them thereby obtaining a counterexample to the principle of Occcam's razor for Hodge structures; and we prove that the other conjecture, with a minor correction, holds true.

Abstract:In algebraic geometry, Gromov--Witten invariants are enumerative invariants that count the number of complex curves in a smooth projective variety satisfying some incidence conditions. In 2001, A. Givental and Y.P. Lee defined new invariants, called $K$-theoretical Gromov--Witten invariants. These invariants are obtained by replacing cohomological constructions used in the definition of the usual Gromov--Witten invariants by their $K$-theoretical analogues. Then, an essential question is to understand how these two invariants are related. In 2013, Iritani-Givental-Milanov-Tonita show that $K$-theoretical Gromov--Witten invariants can be embedded in a function which satisfies a $q$-difference equation. In general, these equations verify a property called "confluence", which guarantees that we can take some limit of these functional equations to obtain differential equations. In this thesis, we propose to compare the two Gromov--Witten theories through the confluence of $q$-difference equation. We show that, in the case of complex projective spaces, the confluence of Givental's small $K$-theoretical $J$-function as a solution of a $q$-difference equations outputs its cohomological analogue.

Weil-étale cohomology and the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for constructible sheaves in characteristic $p$

Abstract:Let $X$ be a variety over a finite field. Given an order $R$ in a semi-simple algebra over the rationals and a constructible étale sheaf $F$ of $R$-modules over $X$, one can consider a natural non-commutative $L$-function associated with $F$. We prove a special value formula at negative integers for this $L$-function, expressed in terms of Weil-étale cohomology; this is a geometric analogue of, and implies, the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for an Artin motive and its negative twists over a global function field. It also generalizes the results of Lichtenbaum and Geisser on special values at negative integers for zeta functions of varieties, and the work of Burns--Kakde in the case of non-commutative L-functions coming from a Galois cover of varieties.
