Abstract:The traditional high dielectric constant (high ε) material is typically made of ceramics. In comparison, the polymer based composites with high s contribute the advantageous candidates with better processing property and flexibility. In this work, the polyimide/barium titanate and the polyimide/LTNO (Li/Ti co-doped NiO) composites were successfully prepared via in situ imidization. It was found that LTNO is more effective than BaTiO 3 in improving the dielectric constant of composite for its higher intrinsic dielectric constant. The dielectric constant of composite containing LTNO particle (in 40% by volume fraction) could reach 104. Based on modeling relation between ε and ceramic particle content, the difference in dielectric properties for two kinds composites were discussed.

Abstract:The interphase region widely exists in polymer-based nanocomposites, which affects the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. General models, such as the Knott model, are often used to predict the dielectric constant of nanocomposites, while the model does not take the existence of interphase into account, which leads to a large deviation between the predicted results and the experimental values. In this study, a developed Knott model is proposed by introducing the interphase region and appropriately assuming the properties of the interphase. The modeling results based on the developed model are in good agreement with the experimental data, which verifies the high accuracy of the development model. The influence of nanoparticle loading on the effective volume fraction is further studied. In addition, the effects of the polymer matrix, nanoparticles, interphase dielectric and thickness, nanoparticle size and volume fraction on the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites are also investigated. The results show that polymer matrix or nanoparticles with a high dielectric and thick interphase can effectively improve the dielectric properties of the materials. Small size nanoparticles with high concentrations are more conducive to improving the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. This study demonstrates that the interphase properties have an important impact on the dielectric properties of nanocomposites, and the developed model is helpful to accurately predict the dielectric constant of polymer-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:Theoretical models were used to predict dielectric permittivities of the thermosetting polyimide (PI) matrix nanocomposite films loading with BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles prepared by the alkoxide route. The observed dielectric permittivities are in good agreement with calculated values using Jayasundere equation and effective medium theory when the interactions of nanoparticle-nanoparticle and nanoparticle-polymer are considered. Additionally, temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity of the BT/PI nanocomposite films at 103 Hz was also studied for both heating from −50 to 150 °C and cooling from 150 to −50 °C. The transformation in crystal phase of BT and changes of free volume in PI were considered to be the main factors influencing the dielectric permittivities of the BT/PI nanocomposite films.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was performed to investigate the structure and dielectric permittivity of poly(vinylidene fluoride)- (PVDF-) based composites with different contents of barium titanate (BT). The β-phase PVDF model with 100 structural units and the spherical BT particle model with a radius of 0.495 nm were built and applied in the initial models with three PVDF macromolecular chains and BT particles for the MD simulations of the BT/PVDF composites. The influences of BT content on the morphological structure, the free volume fraction, and glass transition temperature of the composites were explored according to the simulated results and the experimental ones of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). A model was proposed to predict the static dielectric permittivity of the composites, the results of which were compared with the Cole-Cole fitting results of dielectric spectroscopy. Attempts were made to reveal the structure evolution and the micropolarization mechanism with the increasing content of BT.

Abstract:Nanocomposites based on core-shell structured BaTiO3@Dy2O3 nanoparticles filled poly (vinylidene fluoride) polymer have been prepared. Comparison of two reaction mediums (ethanol and isopropanol) and their effects on the dielectric behavior of nanocomposites were investigated. The ferroelectric polarization of nanocomposites was also analyzed. The results indicate that dispersion mediums can influence the adsorption actions between nanoparticles and polymer in solution. With isopropanol as the dispersed medium, homogenous BaTiO3@Dy2O3/PVDF nanocomposites with suitable volume fraction ratio could be prepared with higher dielectric permittivity, lower dielectric loss and conductivity in the frequency range of 100 Hz similar to 1 MHz compared with that using ethanol as dispersion medium. The displacement-electric field loops display a notable increase in electric displacement and energy storage ability of the nanocomposites compared with pure PVDF. Introduction of Dy2O3 by hydrolysis could further enhance dielectric properties. Isopropanol dispersed composites with 10 vol % BaTiO3@Dy2O3 nanoparticles exhibit dielectric permittivity of similar to 20, low conductivity of 6.3x10(-19) S.m(-1) and loss tangents of 0.06 at 1 kHz.

Abstract:Flexible polymer composite films are prepared by a solution cast method with polar polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) or non-polar epoxy as the polymer matrix. BaTiO3 nanoparticles and BaTiO3 nanofibers with large aspect ratio are used as dielectric fillers after surface modification by polydopamine. The effects of filler shape, surface modification and polarity of polymer matrix on the microstructure, dielectric constants and breakdown strength of polymer composites are investigated in detail. Surface modification by polydopamine improves the compatibility between BaTiO3 and polymer as well as passivating the surfaces of BaTiO3. At the same volume fraction, composites filled with BaTiO3 nanofibers exhibit greater dielectric constants than the composites filled with BaTiO3 nanoparticles. The polydopamine layers on BaTiO3 nanofibers give rise to stronger interfaces between the fillers and polymer matrices. Improved breakdown strengths are achieved in both composites. This work may provide a general strategy for flexible polymer nanocomposites with greatly enhanced dielectric constants and breakdown strength.

Abstract:High permittivity material is usually used to achieve larger stored energy in capacitors. In particular, many high permittivity materials has been used to achieve excellent stress control at cable terminations. In our paper we have investigated the dielectric properties of a new high permittivity BaTiO3/Al/LDPE composites with volume fraction of metal Al 0.20 and volume fraction of BaTiO3 from 0.10 to 0.40 at various temperatures and frequencies. Resistivity of the materials as a function of volume percent BaTiO3 powder were measured at temperatures. Dielectric constant of the materials are compared with the two-component composites containing Al/LDPE and BaTiO3/LDPE over a wide rang of volume loading. In theory we propose to improve the effective cluster model for disordered suspension of conducting particles exhibiting substantial permittivity enhancements, and to extend it to be applicable to three-components systems, containing conducting particles, ferroelectric ceramic and polymer insulator. Abstract:A series of polyimide/barium titanate composite films were successfully prepared by directly mixing method and in situ process.The influence of processing factors,such as particle size,distribution modal,and polymerization method on dielectric properties were studied.Results revealed that the dielectric constant(ε) of the composite film increased by using bigger fillers or employing in situ polymerization and two-modal distribution.Using in situ process,when the composite film containing 50vol% of BaTiO3 with size in 100 nm,the dielectric constant reached to 45 at 10kHz.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent developments and challenges of (Ba,Sr)TiO3/polymer functional composites. The microstructure of barium-strontium titanate (Ba,Sr)TiO3(BST)/polymer composites with different polymer matrices and the nature of the interface between the BST and polymer matrix is critical in the final dielectric properties. The effects of concentration, particle size and BST filler shape on the dielectric properties of BST/polymer composites are discussed. A theoretical model for the dielectric constants of ceramic/polymer composites and the fabrication of BST/polymer composites are described briefly. The development of a dielectric tunability for the BST/polymer composites is summarized. A dielectric tunability theoretical model is proposed based on our previous research results and the effects of several factors on the dielectric tunability of the composites are discussed, which contributes to a prediction of the dielectric tunability of the composites and provides important theoretical and research significance for future work.

Abstract:The interface between nanoparticles and polymer matrix is considered to have an important effect on the properties of nanocomposites. In this experimental study, electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) is used to study the local dielectric property of the interface of low density polyethylene (LDPE)/TiO 2 nanocomposites at nanometer scale. The results show that the addition of TiO 2 nanoparticles leads to a decrease in local permittivity. We then carry out the finite element simulation and confirm that the decrease of local permittivity is related to the effect of interface. According to the results, we propose several models and validate the dielectric effect and range effect of interface. Through the analysis of DSC and solid-state NMR results, we find TiO 2 nanoparticles can suppress the mobility of local chain segments in the interface, which influences the dipolar polarization of chain segments in the interface and eventually results in a decrease in local permittivity. It is believed the results would provide important hint to the research of the interface in future research.
Low-frequency dielectric phenomena in BaTiO3/polymer nanocomposites

Abstract:BaTiO3 (BT) with various diameters were synthesized by alkoxide route and then loaded into different polymers (poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and polyimide (PI)) at 50 vol. % to fabricate BT/PVDF and BT/PI nanocomposite films. The effects of nanoparticles and polymer matrixes on dielectric properties were studied in a wide range of frequency from 10-2 Hz to 106 Hz. A significant low-frequency dielectric permittivity increase was observed. Interfacial polarization and crystal phase effect are considered to analyze the significant increase at low frequency. A significant discrepancy between BT/PVDF and BT/PI composites in dielectric behaviors was discussed. Herein, nanoparticles influenced more on dielectric behavior in the BT/PVDF than in BT/PI composites. It resulted from the strong polarization interaction between ferroelectric BT phase and ferroelectric PVDF phase. Therefore, the roles of nanoparticles (size and crystal phases) and properties of polymers (chemistry and chain structure) are considered to explain the difference in dielectric behaviors.

Abstract:In this Letter, simple theoretical models are presented to predict the influence of aspect ratio, orientation, distribution, and interphase of layered silicates on the dielectric properties of polymer-clay nanocomposites. The predictions are in good agreement with experimental data. The results show that the morphology of the clay fillers and the thickness and dielectric properties of the interphases play an important role in determining the dielectric properties of polymer-clay nanocomposites.

Abstract:For practical application, studying the mechanism governing the macroscopic dielectric properties of polymer composites at low concentration is of great significance. A three-dimensional (3D) representative model with randomly dispersed grains in polymer matrix has been established and calculation results of effective permittivity of BT/PVDF composites with finite element method (FEM) show good consistency with experimental measurements, which demonstrate that the distribution of electric field in ceramic particles/polymer composites at low concentration can be approximated by the electrostatic field. Furthermore, the relationship between the internal electric field and dielectric properties of composites has been established. The effect of grain size in submicron and its dielectric constant to the effective permittivity of composites are fully investigated. The former shows of negligible significance compared with the evident effect of volume fraction, while the latter presents saturation as increasing the permittivity ratio between ceramic particle and polymer.

Abstract:Polymer based dielectric composites were fabricated through incorporation of core-shell structured BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles into PVDF matrix by means of solution blending. Core-shell structured BT nanoparticles with different shell composition and shell thickness were prepared by grafting methacrylate monomer (MMA or TFEMA) onto the surface of BT nanoparticles via surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The content of the grafted polymer and the micro-morphology of the core-shell structured BT nanoparticles were investigated by thermo gravimetric analyses (TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The dielectric properties were measured by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The results showed that high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss are successfully realized in the polymer based composites. Moreover, the type of the grafted polymer and its content had different effect on the dielectric constant. In detail, the attenuation of dielectric constant was 16.6% for BT@PMMAI/PVDF and 10.7% for BT@PMMA2/PVDF composite in the range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz, in which the grafted content of PMMA was 5.5% and 8.0%, respectively. However, the attenuation of dielectric constant was 5.5% for BT@PTFEMA1/13VDF and 4.0% for BT@PTFEMA2/PVDF composite, in which the grafted content of PTFEMA was 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively. These attractive features of BT@PTFEMA/PVDF composites suggested that dielectric ceramic fillers modified with fluorinated polymer can be used to prepare high performance composites, especially those with low dielectric loss and high dielectric constant. Abstract:Polymer and ceramic-based composites offer a unique blend of desirable traits for improving dielectric permittivity. This study employs an empirical approach to estimate the dielectric permittivity of composite materials and uses a finite element model to understand the effects of permittivity and filler concentration on mechanical and electrical properties. The empirical model combines the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars (MWS) and Bruggeman models to estimate the effective permittivity using Barium Titanate (BT) and Calcium Copper Titanate Oxide (CCTO) as ceramic fillers dispersed in a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer matrix. Results indicate that the permittivity of the composite improves with increased filler content, with CCTO/PDMS emerging as the superior combination for capacitive applications. Capacitance and energy storage in the CCTO/PDMS composite material reached 900 nF and 450 nJ, respectively, with increased filler content. Additionally, increased pressure on the capacitive model with varied filler content showed promising effects on mechanical properties. The interaction between BT filler and the polymer matrix significantly altered the electrical properties of the model, primarily depending on the composite's permittivity. This study provides comprehensive insights into the effects of varied filler concentrations on estimating mechanical and electrical properties, aiding in the development of real-world pressure-based capacitive models.

Abstract:Nano-structure polymer-ceramic composite with high dielectric constant has been developed for embedded capacitor application. This polymer-ceramic system consists of lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) ceramic particle and modified high dielectric low viscosity epoxy resin. In order to obtain precise prediction of effective dielectric constant of this composite, a model based on self-consistent effective-medium theory (EMT) is proposed. This model can establish the relevant constitutional parameters of polymer-ceramic composite materials such as shape, composition, and connectivity that determine the dielectric properties of the composite. This model is simpler, uses fewer parameters and its prediction compares better with experiment. The simplicity of the model can be exploited for predictions of the properties and design of nano-structure ferroelectric polymer-ceramic composites.

Abstract:Adding high-κ ceramic nanoparticles into polymers is a general strategy to improve the performances in energy storage. Classic effective medium theories may fail to predict the effective permittivity in polymer nanocomposites wherein the space charge effects are important. In this work, a computational model is developed to understand the space charge effects on the frequency-dependent dielectric properties including the real permittivity and the loss for polymer nanocomposites with both randomly distributed and aggregated nanoparticle fillers. It is found that the real permittivity of the SrTiO3/polyethylene (12% SrTiO3 in volume fraction) nanocomposite can be increased to as high as 60 when there is nanoparticle aggregation and the ion concentration in the bulk polymer is around 1016 cm–3. This model can be employed to quantitatively predict the frequency-dependent dielectric properties for polymer nanocomposites with arbitrary microstructures.

Abstract:Polymer-based dielectric composites with inorganic oxide fillers could exhibit synergistic physical and chemical characteristics from both advantages, which have flexible applications in electrical and electronic technology. As composites with various substances, the interfacial structure plays a key role in the electric and dielectric properties. In this work, BaTiO3 particles were embedded in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) by a solution crystallization process. The conductivity and dielectric constant of the composites increased with the increase of the BaTiO3 filler contents. The charge injection and dissipation behavior at the nanointerface of the composite is investigated by Kelvin probe force microscopy. It is found that the charges are more easily injected into the nanointerface between the particle and the polymer. The accumulation and dissipation of surface charges obey the exponential law. The space-charge polarization is also suggested to be a key factor of injection, while the charge dissipation is determined by charge tunneling. The result also demonstrates that the strong interfacial polarization between the BaTiO3 particles and the PVDF matrix plays a crucial role in the dielectric properties. Fabrication and Characterization of BaTiO3/Al2O3/epoxy Composites with Tunable Dielectric Permittivity

Abstract:In order to get polymeric materials with tunable dielectric permittivity, epoxy composites filled with the combination of micro-size alumina and barium titanate particles were prepared. In this paper, firstly appropriate surface modification method for the inorganic fillers employing silane coupling agent (KH550) was experimentally selected. Then, epoxy resin based composites were prepared with BaTiO 3 and Al 2 O 3 in different proportions. Fillers dispersion as well as dielectric properties of the composites were studied. The results show that compared with pure epoxy, the dielectric permittivity of BaTiO 3 /Al 2 O 3 /EP composites were improved obviously and changes with the increase of the volume fraction of BaTiO 3 . The composites containing KH550 treated fillers have better performance in all aspects than the composites with untreated fillers. Maxwell-Garnett effective median models were used to explore the mechanism of the polarization of the composite. The results show that the dielectric permittivity of KH550 treated composites fit theoretical value better, which indicates that the mechanism of the polarization of the KH550 treated composites we prepared fit Maxwell-Garnett theoretical model better.

Abstract:Nanocomposites comprising flexible polymers and high dielectric constant inorganic nanoparticles are considered to be one of the promising candidates for electrostatic capacitor dielectrics. However, the effect of interfacial property on electrical energy storage of dielectric polymer nanocomposites is still not clear. Herein, the role of the polarity of the interfacial region is investigated. For this purpose, three polymers with different polarity, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyglycidyl methacrylate, and polymethylsulfonyl ethyl methacrylate (PMSEMA) are attached onto BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticle surface via surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. It is found that the polarity of shell polymers shows an apparent effect on the dielectric and energy storage of dielectric polymer nanocomposites. For example, PMSEMA@BT (shell polymer possesses the highest polarity) increases dielectric loss and decreases the breakdown strength of the nanocomposites, leading to lower energy storage capability. However, PMMA@BT (shell polymer possesses the lowest polarity) can induce higher breakdown strength of the nanocomposites. As a result, the PMMA@BT nanocomposite exhibits the highest electrical energy storage capability among the three nanocomposites. This research provides new insight into the design of core-shell nanofillers for dielectric energy storage applications.
