Abstract:The combination of metal − organic frameworks (MOFs) and magnetic nanoparticles has been demonstrated their prospective for sequestration of heavy metal or radionuclides. In this work, five kinds of magnetic metal − organic framework including ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 , ZIF-8@Fe 3 O 4 , CuBTC@Fe 3 O 4 , MIL101(Fe)@Fe 3 O 4 , and MOF74@Fe 3 O 4 , was prepared and used as novel highly-efficient scavengers for the capture of U(VI) from aqueous environment. These magnetic nanocomposites before and/or after U(VI) capture were characterized by FTIR, SEM–EDS, XRD, TEM, BET, and XPS analyses. A batch technique was applied for the capture of U(VI) using these magnetic nanocomposites at different operating parameters. The isotherm and kinetic data were more accurately fitted by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The ZIF-8@Fe 3 O 4 and ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 exhibit the potential to capture U(VI) from aqueous solutions with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 441 and 1058 mg/g –1 , respectively, by fitting the equilibrium data to the Langmuir model. The excellent adsorption capacity and the response to the magnetic field made these novel nanocomposites auspicious candidates in nuclear waste management.

Abstract:Uranium is a critical resource in the development of nuclear energy, and its extraction from natural seawater has been identified as a potential solution to address uranium resource shortages. In this study, hierarchical meso-/micro- porous metal-organic framework functionalized with phytic acid (PA) microspheres (denoted H-UiO-66-PA) are rationally synthesized for efficient uranium extraction. This unique design allowed for a large adsorption capacity and fast adsorption kinetics, making it a promising material for uranium extraction. Due to the hierarchically porous structure, H-UiO-66-NH2 materials not only provide more sites for grafting PA, and thus enhance the adsorption capacity, but also facilitate the rapid diffusion of uranyl ions which can quickly and effectively access the interior of the H-UiO-66-PA adsorbent. Therefore, the obtained H-UiO-66-PA can achieve an impressive absorption efficiency of 6.76 mg g-1 in actual seawater within 15 days. Meanwhile, the H-UiO-66-PA possesses a good adsorption capacity for uranyl ions in the five adsorption/desorption cycles. This work proposes a feasible strategy for constructing functional hierarchical porous MOFs for uranium removal.

Abstract:Functionalized magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 composite nanoparticles were prepared by simply embedding iron oxide nanoparticles into MCM-41 through one-step synthesis process, followed by aminopropyls grafting on the mesopore channels, aiming to efficiently and conveniently uptake U(VI) from aqueous solution. The resultant material possesses highly ordered mesoporous structure with large surface area, uniform pore size, excellent thermal stability, quick magnetic response, and desirable acids resistance, confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption/ desorption experiments, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Detailed U(VI) sorption test indicated that this material is indeed an effective U(VI) sorbent with fast sorption kinetics of less than 2 h, large sorption capacity of 160 mg/g at pH 5.0±0.1, and desirable selectivity towards U(VI) ions over a range of competing metal ions. The absorbed U(VI) can be easily desorbed by 0.01 mol/L or more concentrated HNO3 solution, and the reclaimed sorbent can be reused with no obvious decrease of sorption capacity even after 4 sorption-desorption cycles. The present results suggest the vast opportunities of this kind of magnetic composite on the solid-phase extraction of U(VI).

Abstract:The employment of magnetic nanomaterials to treat uranium-containing wastewater is highly desirable but maintains an enormous challenge. To overcome the challenge, herein, a series of amidoxime functionalized core–shell adsorbents AO-Fe 3 O 4 /P (MBA-AN) with magnetically separation character were developed by introducing high concentration of amidoxime to Fe 3 O 4 /P (MBA-AN) prepared via distill-precipitation polymerization of N, N'-methylene diacrylamide (MBA) with acrylonitrile (AN). By optimizing the polymerization system, abundant amidoxime ligands which served as sorption sites to supply the strong affinity for uranium could be introduced onto the sorbent. Thus, the maximum sorption capacity ( q max ) of AO-Fe 3 O 4 /P (MBA-AN) at pH of 4.5 can run to 429.5 mg g -1 , which outperformed most reported magnetic materials. The as-constructed core–shell structure could enhance the sterling acid resistibility, and the morphology, chemical structure and adsorption performance nearly maintained immutable even after immersed at pH 1.0 for 12 h. Due to its superparamagnetic character, the composite could also be magnetically recycled within 20 s, and be used repeatedly for leastways six times without obvious loss of sorption amount. The satisfactory uranium removal was principally ascribed to the interaction of uranium with amino and hydroxyl of amidoxime ligand, evidenced by XPS and DFT method. The DFT result revealed the geometric structure of 1:1 of UO 2 2+ with amidoxime group could depict the binding model of uranium and the sorbent well. More importantly, in real wastewater containing uranium, the uranium removal efficiency obtained by the sorbent could reach up to 99.0 %, and the separation factor (S U/M ) value regarding all competing cations surpassed 658.1, resulting in the concentration of treated wastewater meet discharge standards set by World Health Organization (WHO). This work brings a prospective future for magnetic nanomaterials in the disposal of real uranium-containing wastewater.

Abstract:A novel carboxyl-functionalized metal-organic framework for highly efficient uranium sorption was prepared through a generic postsynthetic strategy, and this MOF's saturation sorption capacity is found to be as high as 314 mg·g-1. The preliminary application illustrated that the grafted free-standing carboxyl groups have notably enhanced the sorption of uranyl ions on MIL-101. In addition, we have performed molecular dynamics simulation combined with density functional theory calculations to investigate the molecular insights of uranyl ions binding on MOFs. The high selectivity and easy separation of the as-prepared material have shown tremendous potential for practical applications in the nuclear industry or radioactive water treatment, and the functionalized MOF can be extended readily upon the versatility of click chemistry. This work provides a facile and purposeful approach for developing MOFs toward a highly efficient and selective extraction of uranium(VI) in aqueous solution, and it further facilitates the structure-based design of nanomaterials for radionuclide-containing-medium pretreatment.

Abstract:Efficient removal of uranium (U) from aqueous solutions is crucial for ecological safety. Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles provide a promising strategy for radionuclide recovery and separation. However, designing and synthesizing magnetic adsorbents with high sorption capacity and selectivity, accompanied by excellent stability and reusability, remain a challenge. In this work, novel amidoxime-functionalized flower-like magnetic Fe3O4@TiO2 core–shell microspheres are designed and synthesized to efficiently remove U(VI) from aqueous solutions and actual seawater. The magnetic Fe3O4 core facilitates easy separation by an external magnetic field, and flower-like TiO2 nanosheets provide abundant specific surface areas and functionalization sites. The grafted amidoxime (AO) groups could function as a claw for catching uranium. The maximum adsorption capacity on U(VI) of the designed nanospheres reaches 313.6 mg·g–1 at pH 6.0, and the adsorption efficiency is maintained at 97% after 10 cycles. In addition, the excellent selectivity of the magnetic recyclable AO-functioning Fe3O4@TiO2 microspheres endows the potential of uranium extraction from seawater. Abstract:It remains a huge challenge to synthesize magnetic nanomaterials for the efficacious extraction of uranium in strong acid media, due to vast majority of magnetic nanomaterials often suffer from poor structural stability and low uranium adsorption performance in strong acid media. Herein, a novel core-shell magnetic nanomaterial Fe3O4@SiO2/P (MBA-VPA) bearing phosphonic acid was fabricated by distill-precipitation polymerization of N, N'-methylene diacrylamide (MBA) with vinylphosphonic acid (VPA) in the presence of Fe3O4 decorated by SiO2 (Fe3O4@SiO2). By optimizing the polymerization system, abundant accessible phosphonic acid (2.85 mmol g-1) was grafted onto the polymer skeleton of Fe3O4@SiO2/P (MBA-VPA), resulting in the adsorbent show a record-breaking maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of 262.5 mg g-1 even in 4 mol L-1 of HNO3 with an excellent selectivity for uranium under condition of the presence of multi-ions. The uranium adsorption capacity of the adsorbent in strong acid medium increased remarkably with the enhancement of the concentration and free movement degree of phosphonic acid group. By coating the magnetic core Fe3O4 with an inert SiO2, the magnetic adsorbent even exhibited excellent acidic resistance in strongly acidic solution. In addition, the adsorbent could be magnetically recovered, and repeated six times at a minimum without significant reduction in adsorption capacity. The excellent uranium adsorption performance in strongly acidic solution was primarily assigned to the abundant accessible P=O groups, which was evidenced by XPS analysis, control experiments and DFT method. Most importantly, this work provides a new perspective for developing highly active, excellent acidic resistance, and recyclable magnetic nanomaterials for efficient extraction of uranium in strong acid solutions.

Abstract:Novel mesoporous Fe3O4@SiO2 nanospheres (MSN) functionalized with N/O-containing groups (MSN-DA and MSN-DATA) were prepared and characterized. Both MSN-DA and MSN-DATA were core-shell magnetic nanospheres, and they had high affinity for U(VI) sorption. The XPS analysis indicated that U(VI) sorption on both sorbents (MSN-DA and MSN-DATA) was mainly through the inner-complexation mechanism, but for MSN-DATA, cation-exchange also played a significant role. The maximum sorption capacities reached 139.1 mg/g for MSN-DA and 103.9 mg/g for MSN-DATA. Both the functionalized sorbents exhibited fast sorption rate, excellent selectivity to co-existing cations, and good reusability for uranium sorption, however, MSN-DA was more effective for U(VI) sorption (compared to MSN-DATA) due to less molecular hindrance and more amine/amino groups for chelating U(VI). These findings indicated that MSN-DA and MSN-DATA could be potentially used for the efficient sorption/separation of U(VI) from wastewater.

Abstract:It is very important to properly treat uranium-containing wastewater scattered in the environment. In this study, we used the hydrothermal method to synthesize carbon-coated magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and then modified by sodium hydroxide to yield magnetic carbon nanomaterials (Fe 3 O 4 @HTC-NaOH). The microstructure and chemistry of the material were characterized by TEM and FTIR. We investigated the adsorption behavior of materials for uranium (VI) under different conditions, including pH, contact time, initial uranium concentration, and temperature. The results indicated that this material adsorbs uranium quickly, achieving equilibrium in static adsorption after approximately 225 min. The adsorption behavior was strongly dependent on pH, and the maximum adsorption capacity (457.83 mg/g) was reached at pH 5.5. The initial concentration also had a role in the adsorption behavior. With the gradual increase of the initial concentration of uranium (VI), the adsorption capacity showed an increasing trend and reached saturation at 100 mg/g. Adsorption isotherm could be well fitted by the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. And the results indicated it is a heat-absorbing reaction. Owing to the introduction of Fe 3 O 4 , the material is magnetic and the solid-liquid separation can be rapidly completed by the pairing of magnets. The new material could be regenerated using HNO 3 , and the adsorption rate could maintain above 75% after five adsorption/regeneration cycles, which illustrated its certain practical application value.

Abstract:With the rapid development of nuclear industry, a large amount of U(VI)-containing wastewater is inevitably generated and poses a serious threat to the environment. Hence, it is of great significance to remove U(VI) from aqueous solution. Herein, a novel magnetic absorbent (Fe 3 O 4 @DFNS-NH 2 ) with core–shell and fibrous structure for U(VI) capture was fabricated. The magnetic core can make the adsorbent separated conveniently from solution and the functional porous shell facilitates the fast capture of U(VI). Batch experiments were carried out to investigate the performance of the magnetic absorbent. The U(VI) adsorption onto Fe 3 O 4 @DFNS-NH 2 reached equilibrium within 60 min at pH 6 and the adsorption capacity reached 255.2 mg g −1 . The adsorption followed the pseudo-second order model and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating the nature of monolayer chemisorption. In addition, Fe 3 O 4 @DFNS-NH 2 exhibited good selectivity toward U(VI) in the presence of metal ions (K + , Cs + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Sr 2+ and Eu 3+ ). FT-IR and XPS analysis demonstrated that U(VI) was anchored onto Fe 3 O 4 @DFNS-NH 2 through the surface complexation with amino groups. These findings manifest that Fe 3 O 4 @DFNS-NH 2 shows great potential to remove U(VI) from nuclear wastewater.

Abstract:Efficient and selective extraction of uranium (U(VI)) from seawater is essential for sustainable nuclear power production. This study reports a novel adsorbent zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-67@SiO 2 -A/polyacrylamide (PAM) which was synthesized by grafting the core–shell metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-based nanostructures coated with the 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) functionalized SiO 2 (SiO 2 -A) onto PAM hydrogel. The SiO 2 shell was grown on the surface of MOF, which improved the acid-base resistance of MOF. The introduction of ZIF-67@SiO 2 -A enhances the specific surface area and adsorption efficiency of the PAM. The ZIF-67@SiO 2 -A/PAM shows remarkable adsorption capacity, fast adsorption kinetics, and good reusability for uranium. It has excellent adsorption property (6.33 mg·g −1 , 30 d) in natural seawater. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mappings, and density functional theory reveal that the coordination by N and O in ZIF-67@SiO 2 -A/PAM with uranium is the main mechanism of uranium adsorption. Thus, ZIF-67@SiO 2 -A/PAM has great potential to capture uranium from natural seawater.

Coupling G-C3n4 Nanosheets with Metal-Organic Frameworks As 2D/3D Composite for the Synergetic Removal of Uranyl Ions from Aqueous Solution.

Abstract:Uranium is not merely a momentous resource for nuclear energy, but also a highly toxic pollutant which has aroused global attention. The efficient handling of uranium from contaminated water is urgent. Herein, to acquire the improved performance of MOFs for U(VI) capture, a 2D/3D hybrid NH2-UiO-66/g-C3N4 (NU6CN) adsorbent was designed and fabricated through one-step hydrothermal approach. With the newly synthesized efficient NU6CN composite, the U(VI) loading amount could reach 195.55 mg.g(-1), which significantly outperformed that of the individual NH2-UiO-66 (134.09 mg.g(-1)) and g-C3N4 (53.69 mg.g(-1)) at pH 5.0 and 298 K. The adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model. Subsequently, based on this system, the underlying interaction mechanism between U(VI) and NU6CN was carefully investigated. The formation of an inner-sphere complex on NU6CN surface was determined by the macroscopic and microscopic data. In the light of XPS analysis, the adsorption of U(V1) on NU6CN was attributable to the synergism of the ample nitrogen- and oxygen-bearing functional groups (e.g., N-C=N, O-C=O, C-O) derived from g-C3N4 and NH2-UiO-66. Additionally, NU6CN revealed good recoverability and recyclability by adsorption/desorption test. These findings presented herein demonstrated the remarkable potential of as-prepared adsorbents for the uranium-contaminated water remediation. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Decorating Cage-Shaped Cavities with Carboxyl Groups on Two-Dimensional MOF Nanosheet for Trace Uranium(VI) Trapping

Abstract:The efficient and complete extraction of uranium from aqueous solutions is crucial for safeguarding human health from potential radiotoxicity and chemotoxicity. Herein, an ultrathin 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheet with cavity structures was elaborately constructed, based on a calix[4]arene ligand. The large molecular skeleton and cup-shaped feature of the calix[4]arene enabled the as-prepared MOFs with large layer separations, which can be readily delaminated into ultrathin single-layer (∼1.25 nm) nanosheets. The incorporation of permanent cavity structures to the MOF nanosheets can fully utilize their structural features of readily accessible adsorption groups and exposed surface area in uranium removal, reaching ultrafast adsorption kinetics; the functionalized cavity structure endowed MOF nanosheets with the ability to preconcentrate and extract uranium from aqueous solutions with ultrahigh efficiencies, even at extremely low concentrations. As a result, relatively high removal ratios (>95%) can be achieved for uranium within 5 min, even in the ultralow concentration range of 75-250 ppb, and the residual uranium was reduced to below 4.9 ppb. The MOF nanosheets also exhibited extremely high anti-interference ability, which could efficiently remove the low-level uranium (∼150 ppb) from various real samples. The characterizations and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the synergistic effects of multiple interactions between the carboxylate groups and cage-like cavities with uranyl ions can be responsible for the efficient and selective uranium extraction.

Abstract:Uranium (U(VI)) removal from nuclear-contaminated water is still an obstacle that needs to be solved quickly. Herein, looking for efficient, fast, and highly selective separation of U(VI) versatile material is of great significance. In this study, a novel Ce/Mn bimetallic modified aminated MOF material UiO-66-NH 2 was synthesized through solvothermal reaction by using ZrOCl 2 ·8H 2 O as a sacrificial template, which was employed as an adsorbent in radioactive remediation. The characterization of the adsorbent Ce/Mn-UiO-66-NH 2 was investigated by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET and the results indicated that Zr in UiO-66-NH 2 had been partially replaced by Ce/Mn successfully. Through batch adsorption experiments, we found that the maximal capture capacity of the produced adsorbent for U(VI) was 1218.78 mg/g at 313 K, and the elimination process fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption process of U(VI) was endothermic and spontaneous which was regulated by chemisorption. After 5 times recycling, the removal rate still exceeded 83.5 %, indicating that Ce/Mn-UiO-66-NH 2 was a promising adsorbent that can effectively remove U(VI) in radioactive wastewater. The increased adsorption capacity was proposed attributed to complexation and electrostatic attraction between the radionuclides and the introducing functional groups as well as Ce or Mn ions. This study provides a reference value for radioactive wastewater remediation.

Abstract:Iron oxide with superparamagnetic property and mesoporous silica with large surface areas are both important to design multifunctional sorbents, and magnetic-mesoporous nanoparticles of asymmetric morphology may make full use of their advantages. To address this, spatially isolated magnetic-mesoporous units in one anisotropic Janus nanoparticle with abundant amidoxime (AO) groups (AO-Fe 3 O 4 @C&mSiO 2 ) was synthesized for rapid and selective extraction of uranium. Chemically and structurally anisotropic AO-Fe 3 O 4 @C&mSiO 2 was composed of one AO functionalized mesoporous silica nanorods and a carbon coated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle, which displayed excellent surface area (139.9 m 2 g -1 ) and saturation magnetization (28.79 emu g -1 ). Thus, AO-Fe 3 O 4 @C&mSiO 2 showed fast adsorption kinetics for reaching adsorption equilibrium within 30 min, and then they were able to be collected in 3.0 s under an external magnetic field. The maximum and spontaneous adsorption capacity for uranyl ions was obtained by fitting thermodynamic data through Langmuir model at 298 K was 62.12 mg g -1 , and AO-Fe 3 O 4 @C&mSiO 2 achieved the highest uptake amount and removal rate of almost 100% towards uranium in the presence of competitive ions. Meanwhile, the results from ten regeneration cycles confirmed the high service lifetime of AO-Fe 3 O 4 @C&mSiO 2 . This work not only demonstrates a strategy for preparing multifunctional sorbents with anisotropic structure but also provides a method for selective uranium extraction.

Abstract:With the rapid industrial development and growing environmental awareness, the efficient extraction of uranium from seawater and wastewater has emerged as a research hotspot in nuclear energy development. Although metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) materials are widely used for uranium extraction, their low stability and poor selectivity hinder further development. Herein, a novel phosphorylurea functionalized metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with optimized pore structure and hydrophilicity is fabricated (DUT-5-POR) by in situ induced etching strategy, which synergistically achieves the regulation of structural and coordination microenvironment. The presence of mesoporous pores can accelerate ion transport and expose abundant adsorption sites to enhance the adsorption capacity of uranium. Meanwhile, the introduction of phosphorylurea groups optimizes the hydrophilicity microenvironment and surface group density of DUT-5-POR to improve selectivity and kinetics. Consequently, DUT-5-POR shows an excellent adsorption ability (Q m = 263.4 mg⋅g −1 ) at pH = 6 and high selectivity for various competing metal ions, particularly in the separation of uranium and vanadium. Moreover, this work provides a feasible strategy for adjusting the structure and the coordination microenvironment of MOFs and a comprehensive perspective on the adsorption of uranium by MOF-based materials.

Abstract:Extracting uranium from seawater is of great importance for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. A central problem is to develop high-performance adsorbents to allow for efficient and selective recovery of uranium from seawater. Since the adsorption properties are strongly dependent on the functional groups and the architectures of the adsorbents, one option is to bond effectively functional groups onto high-surface-area materials. Here we report the first synthesis of amidoxime functionalized metal-organic frameworks MIL-101-OA, exhibiting excellent adsorption performance arising from the large surface areas of the metal-organic frameworks (MIL-101) and the high affinity of the amidoxime towards uranyl. The MIL-101-OA was synthesized via grafting of acrylonitrile onto the pores of MIL-101 followed by its conversion to amidoxime functionalities. The MIL-101-OA demonstrated excellent uranium adsorption capacities of 321 mg g−1 in simulated seawater and 4.6 mg g−1 in real seawater, which are competitive with the currently state-of-the-art uranium adsorbent.
