Abstract:Eco-innovation promotes sustainable development and high-quality economic growth. Exploring the threshold role of the shadow economy in realizing eco-innovation's green benefits is worthwhile. This study employs large-sample coding statistics, text extraction methods, and the MIMIC model, utilizing provincial panel data from China for 2010–2020. The empirical results indicate that (1) Eco-innovation enhances environmental quality significantly, achieving green benefits. (2) A single threshold effect was observed. When the shadow economy size exceeds the threshold, it weakens the green benefit of eco-innovation. Conversely, when below the threshold, the shadow economy enhances these benefits, and the results are robust. (3) No threshold effect exists in eastern and western China, whereas a single threshold effect exists in central, consistent with national trends. (4) China's eco-innovation mainly stems from a closed model, while both closed and open models show green benefits, with the shadow economy's impact having a single threshold effect. When the shadow economy exceeds the threshold, it weakens the green benefits of the closed model but enhances those of the open model. Therefore, China should continuously encourage eco-innovation, control the shadow economy size, and encourage innovators to select flexible innovation models based on macro-environmental conditions. Adopting open eco-innovation is a strategic approach to optimize environmental quality for emerging economies that face challenges in effectively controlling the shadow economy in the short term.
