Abstract:In this work, a multilayer 1D-photonic crystal made with alternating porous silicon materials (PSi1 and PSi2) is used to realize a distributed Bragg reflector where a thin Plasmon active metal layer can be deposited on the top to excite Tamm Plasmon Polaritons. Based on the realization of the Tamm plasmon, a gas sensor capable of detecting change in refractive index of gas sample was designed with a cavity layer (where the maximum intensity of the field took place) in between the metal and the distributed Bragg reflector structure. A comparative analysis has been performed by considering Tamm Plasmon Polaritons excitation using four different Plasmon active metals namely Ag, Au, Al and Pt. We also investigate different performance characteristics of the sensor as a function of different number of pairs constituting the DBR. Our investigation reveals that relevant performance characteristics of the sensor was found to be maximum for Tamm Plasmon Polaritons excitation using Ag. Additionally, the optimum value of number of pairs of alternating porous silicon layers for best performance was found to be N=8 pairs. The proposed sensor is based on a very simple structure and with the choice of appropriate metal layer, the device would be an effective choice for biosensing applications in coming days.

A Tunable Plasmonic Refractive Index Sensor with Nanoring-Strip Graphene Arrays

Abstract:In the present study, we design a tunable plasmonic refractive index sensor with nanoring-strip graphene arrays. The calculations prove that the nanoring-strip have two transmission dips. By changing the strip length L of the present structure, we find that the nanoring-strip graphene arrays have a wide range of resonances (resonance wavelength increases from 17.73 μm to 28.15 μm). When changing the sensing medium refractive index nmed, the sensitivity of mode A and B can reach 2.97 μm/RIU and 5.20 μm/RIU. By changing the doping level ng, we notice that the transmission characteristics can be tuned flexibly. Finally, the proposed sensor also shows good angle tolerance for both transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) polarizations. The proposed nanoring-strip graphene arrays along with the numerical results could open a new avenue to realize various tunable plasmon devices and have a great application prospect in biosensing, detection, and imaging.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a tunable perfect-absorption lithography-free refractive index sensor structure, which couples the Tamm phonon polariton (TPhP) mode and Graphene/α-MoO3/SiC (GMS) mode. By aligning the modal frequencies of TPhP and GMS, the coupling of the two modes is realized with perfect absorption. We utilize the transfer matrix method (TMM), resonance equation and coupled mode theory (CMT) to theoretically analyze the absorption of different modes and apply the structure to refractive index sensor. By modulating the structure parameter, the sensitivity of the sensor can be as high as 6 μm/RIU. This work could contribute to several fields such as refractive index sensors, photodetectors, absorbers, and energy harvesting devices.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel terahertz plasmonic sensing concept that utilizes a metasurface coupler to excite spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPs) modes on graphene strips. The dielectric metasurface unit cell consists of two silicon cylindrical rods with different radii on a quartz substrate. Vertically incident terahertz waves are deflected by the metasurface, resulting in a transverse wave-vector within the substrate that matches the SSPs wave-vector supported by the graphene strips. This enables efficient excitation of SSPs modes on the graphene strips surface, leading to absorption resonances in the range of 0.420–0.430 THz with a high quality (Q) factor of 152. We then applied this device for refractive index sensing, and the investigation results indicate that the high Q resonances in the absorption spectrum experience shifts with changes in the refractive index of the target substance, with a sensitivity of 110 GHz/RIU. The designed structure in this study exhibits significant potential for applications in trace substance absorption spectrum detection.

Abstract:Here in, a tunable nano refractive index sensor structure consisting of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with a metal stub coupled with a protractor type half ring cavity (PTHRC) is designed based on surface plasmon polaritons. The propagation characteristics of the plasmonic waveguide coupled system is analyzed by using finite element method (FEM). The sharp asymmetric Fano resonance in the transmission spectrum is generated by the interaction between narrow discrete mode of the PTHRC and wide continuous mode of the metal stub on the waveguide, which is demonstrated by simulation results. At the same time, the influence of diverse arguments on the performance of the nano-sensor system is analyzed, and the shape and position of the formant can be adjusted by changing the key arguments. The maximum sensitivity and FOM of the refractive-index sensor is 1600 nm/RIU and 50. The investigation has potential application prospect in optical integrated circuit and it also provides a tunable and easy to fabricate structure choice for nano-biosensors and other fields.

Abstract:In this paper, binary photonic crystal with a quasi-periodic sequence is investigated. A Fibonacci sequence of gyroidal graphene and porous silicon terminated by the gyroidal layer is proposed as a refractive index sensor. The refractive index or concentration of an analyte can be predicted based on the resonant dip of Tamm plasmon. The excellent optical properties of porous silicon and gyroidal graphene will contribute to enhancing the performance of the proposed sensor. The impact of various geometric parameters is investigated. Compared with the similar structure of periodic photonic crystals, the sensitivity and figure of merit enhanced from 188.8 to 1347.7 THz/RIU (higher 614%) and from 355,384 to 554,405/RIU (higher 56%), respectively. The high-performance results imply that the suggested Fibonacci sensor is suitable for gas detection and bio-sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel graphene metasurface is proposed in this article, which is simulated by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) and found to exhibit a significant dual Plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) phenomenon in the terahertz frequency band. For further research, new transmission spectra are simulated using the coupled mode theory (CMT), and after comparison, it is found that the images were basically consistent and had a high degree of agreement. In addition, through observation and analysis of the PIT window, it is found that the PIT phenomenon can be effectively tuned by adjusting the Fermi level. Finally, the metasurface is proposed in this article, which has excellent sensing properties. After calculation and comparison of different refractive indices of surrounding media, it is found that the maximum sensitivity can reach 1.567 THz/RIU at a frequency of f = 4.8716 THz, with a figure of merit (FOM) of 23.855. Compared with other sensors of the same type, the sensor in this paper has great advantages. In summary, the graphene metasurface proposed in this article provides more theoretical support for manufacturing dynamically adjustable graphene sensors.

Abstract:In this paper, with the combination of metal assisted guided-mode resonance (MaGMR) and graphene, a graphene-layered MaGMR refractive index sensor is proposed. With the optimization by finite difference time domain method, the sensor can achieve perfect absorption at the near infrared band. The electric intensity distribution of the sensor is studied and shows descent resonance phenomena at the resonant wavelength. The investigation on the detection of analytes with different refractive indices around the sensor is conducted and it shows that the proposed sensor has superior sensing performance with a sensitivity of 590 nm/RIU and figure of merit 180.98 RIU −1 . The influence of the Fermi level of graphene on the tunability of the sensor is also analyzed. To measure the performance deviation when there is a manufacturing error, the structural parameters of the sensor are also investigated. The proposed sensor exhibits great sensing performance and therefore has many potential applications in sensing, environmental monitoring and detection fields.

Abstract:A high-property plasma resonance-sensor structure consisting of two metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides coupled with a transverse ladder-shaped nano-cavity (TLSNC) is designed based on surface plasmon polaritons. Its transmission characteristics are analyzed using multimode interference coupling mode theory (MICMT), and are simulated using finite element analysis (FEA). Meanwhile, the influence of different structural arguments on the performance of the structure is investigated. This study shows that the system presents four high-quality formants in the transmission spectrum. The highest sensitivity is 3000 nm/RIU with a high FOM* of 9.7 × 105. In addition, the proposed structure could act as a biosensor to detect the concentrations of sodium ions (Na+), potassium ions (K+), and the glucose solution with maximum sensitivities of 0.45, 0.625 and 5.5 nm/mgdL−1, respectively. Compared with other structures, the designed system has the advantages of a simple construction, a wide working band range, high reliability and easy nano-scale integration, providing a high-performance cavity choice for refractive index sensing and biosensing devices based on surface plasmons.

Abstract:In this paper, a multichannel refractive index sensor based on a subwavelength metal⁻insulator⁻metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with tangent-ring resonators is proposed. When two tangent-ring resonators were placed above the MIM waveguide, Fano resonance with asymmetrical line shape appeared in the transmission spectrum due to the interference between the light⁻dark resonant modes. The sensitivity and figure of merit were as high as 880 nm/RIU and 964, respectively. Through adding more tangent-ring resonators, multiple Fano resonances with ultrasharp peaks/dips were achieved in the wavelength range of 800⁻2000 nm. Besides, negative group delays were also observed in the Fano resonant dips. Two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was used to simulate and analyze the performances of the proposed structures. These kinds of multiring structures can find important applications in the on-chip optical sensing and optical communication areas.

Abstract:As graphene-related technology advances, the benefits of graphene metamaterials become more apparent. In this study, a surface-isolated exciton-based absorber is built by running relevant simulations on graphene, which can achieve more than 98% perfect absorption at multiple frequencies in the MWIR (MediumWavelength Infra-Red (MWIR) band as compared to the typical absorber. The absorber consists of three layers: the bottom layer is gold, the middle layer is dielectric, and the top layer is patterned with graphene. Tunability was achieved by electrically altering graphene's Fermi energy, hence the position of the absorption peak. The influence of graphene's relaxation time on the sensor is discussed. Due to the symmetry of its structure, different angles of light source incidence have little effect on the absorption rate, leading to polarization insensitivity, especially for TE waves, and this absorber has polarization insensitivity at ultra-wide-angle degrees. The sensor is characterized by its tunability, polarisation insensitivity, and high sensitivity, with a sensitivity of up to 21.60 THz/refractive index unit (RIU). This paper demonstrates the feasibility of the multi-frequency sensor and provides a theoretical basis for the realization of the multi-frequency sensor. This makes it possible to apply it to high-sensitivity sensors.

Abstract:We propose a novel mechanism to construct a tunable and ultracompact refractive index sensor by using the Fano resonance in metal-graphene hybrid nanostructure. Plasmon modes in graphene nanoribbons and waveguide resonance modes in the slits of metal strip array coexist in this system. Strong interference between the two different modes occurs when they are spectrally overlapped, resulting in a Fano-type asymmetrically spectral lineshape which can be used for detecting the variations of ambient refractive index. The proposed sensor has a relatively high figure of merit (FOM) over 20 and its sensing performance shows a good tolerance to roughness. In addition to the wide range measurement enabled by the electrical tuning of graphene plasmon modes, such ultracompact system also provides an angle-independent operation and therefore, it can efficiently work for the detection of gas, liquid, or solids. Such optical nanostructure may also be applied to diverse fields such as temperature/pressure metering, medical detection and mechanical precision measurement.

A Symmetric MIM Waveguide Structure of a High-Sensitivity Refractive Index Sensor

Abstract:Here in, a high sensitivity nano-sensor structure consisting of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) wave-guide with a baffle coupled with a bearing circular ring cavity (BCRC) is designed based on surface plasmon polaritons. The propagation characteristics of the plasmonic wave-guide coupled system is analyzed by using finite element analysis (FEA). The sharp asymmetric Fano resonance in the transmission spectrum is generated by the interaction between continuous wideband resonance of the baffle on the wave-guide and discrete narrowband resonance of the BCRC, which is demonstrated by simulation results. At the same time, the influence of different parameters on the performance of the structure is analyzed. The maximum sensitivity of the refractive-index sensor is 3220 nm/RIU with a high FOM of 57.5. The investigation of the designed structure breaks through the restrictions of some traditional cavities and provides a cavity choice for designing nano-photon sensors based on surface plasmons.

Abstract:In this manuscript, a plasmonic refractive index sensor with two sequential ring resonators is presented. Due to the dual-band unidirectional reflectionless light propagation phenomena, both the sensitivity and figure of merit are improved. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to simulate the structure numerically. Moreover, the device is investigated analytically, using the coupled-mode theory (CMT). A good agreement between the analytical and numerical results is observed. The proposed device indicates a high sensitivity of ∼1000 nm/RIU, a significant figure of merit of 133 RIU−1, and a large quality factor of 132.8 for sensing different materials with the refractive indices of n = 1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6. Also, the presented structure is investigated as a temperature sensor in which the sensitivity to the temperature changes is obtained as 0.41 nm/°C.

Abstract:In this work, a refractive index sensor structure is proposed, which consists of the met-al-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide coupling with ring resonator with a rectangular cavity. Its sensing characteristics are analyzed by the finite element analysis method. SPPs is an electromagnetic wave mode excited by the oscillatory coupling of free electron-photon interactions on the surface region of a metal, whose field strength is maximum at the metal-dielectric partition interface and then decays exponentially to both sides The results show that the sensing characteristics of the ring resonator can be changed by introducing a stub, which can achieve the purpose of enhancing the coupling efficiency of SPPs. The structure has two Fano peaks, and each peak can be individually regulated by changing the size of the sensing structure. Sensitivity is the key performance indicator of the system, which is the shift in resonance wavelength caused by a change in refractive index when the ambient medium is changed. The best sensitivity of this structure can reach 2,300 nm/RIU with a figure of merit (FOM) value of 60 RIU −1 . The proposed structure has great potential in nano-sensors.

Abstract:In this paper, a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide featuring a three-ring nested cavity structure is proposed. We enhance and optimize this design by integrating graphene nanostructures into the ferrule resonance cavity, resulting in a hybrid graphene-MIM waveguide structure. The transmission spectra and electric fields generated by the structure are analyzed by using the finite element method (FEM), shedding light on the formation mechanism of various Fano resonance peaks. The validity of our theoretical analysis is confirmed using multimode interference coupled mode theory (MICMT), and the simulation results are largely aligning with the theoretical verification results. Next, by manipulating the chemical potential of graphene, the Fano resonance can be tuned across a wide range of wavelength bands. And this capability enables the realization of a dynamically tunable refractive index sensor for transmission spectroscopy. Under optimized parameter settings, the refractive index sensor achieves a maximum sensitivity of 1266.67 nm / RIU , and a maximum figure of merit (FOM) value of 199.67 RIU − 1 . Compared with conventional MIM waveguide devices, this design overcomes the difficulty of conventional MIM waveguide structures that cannot be dynamically tunable. Notably, the wavelength of the Fano resonance formed by the transmission spectrum can be dramatically altered when the refractive index of the medium in the surrounding environment is slightly changed. Therefore, this structure expands the repertoire of integrated optical devices with potential applications, particularly in the field of optical sensors.

Abstract:This paper presents an innovative plasmonics-based refractive index sensor structure that consists of a circular ring containing a rectangular cavity (CRRC) and a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide with two rectangular stubs. The narrowband mode of the CRRC interacts with the broadband mode of the bus waveguide stub to generate sharp and asymmetric Fano resonance. The transmission characteristics were simulated using the finite element method. A maximum refractive-index sensor sensitivity of 2300 nm/RIU and figure of merit (FOM) of 57.5 were achieved. The proposed structure is simple yet highly sensitive and has the potential to be useful in detecting electrolyte concentration in blood. The results of this study provide a foundation for developing highly sensitive plasmonic sensors biomedical applications.

Abstract:A plasmonic refractive index sensor based on surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that consist of metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguides and a whistle-shaped cavity is proposed. The transmission properties were simulated numerically by using the finite element method. The Fano resonance phenomenon can be observed in their transmission spectra, which is due to the coupling of SPPs between the transmission along the clockwise and anticlockwise directions. The refractive index-sensing properties based on the Fano resonance were investigated by changing the refractive index of the insulator of the MIM waveguide. Modulation of the structural parameters on the Fano resonance and the optics transmission properties of the coupled structure of two MIM waveguides with a whistle-shaped cavity were designed and evaluated. The results of this study will help in the design of new photonic devices and micro-sensors with high sensitivity, and can serve as a guide for future application of this structure.

Abstract:A graphene-hexagonal boron nitride ( ${h}$ BN)- silicon hybrid plasmonic rib waveguide (GHSHPRW) is designed for refractive index sensing which can be used as a biochemical sensor. The mode characteristics and propagation performances of the four hybrid plasmonic modes (HPMs) in the GHSHPRW are simulated by using the finite element method (FEM). The simulation results show that a high figure of merit (FOM) of 106 is achieved by optimizing waveguide size parameters. The propagation loss spectra of the four HPMs in the GHSHPRW with different parameters are discussed, which have remarkable peaks. The homogeneous and surface sensing performances of the GHSHPRW-based sensing structure are studied. The sensing performances shows that the sensitivities of -349.40 nm/RIU and 220 pm/nm are obtained for the homogeneous sensing and surface sensing, respectively. The detection limits (DLs) of the homogeneous sensing and surface sensing can be better than 10−5 RIU and 14.97 pm when the standard deviation of the total noise in the sensing system is assumed to be 1.1 pm. The GHSHPRW-based sensing structure has small size, ultra-long propagation length, and good compatibility with the CMOS technology, so it has potential applications in the ultra-compact on-chip micro-nano photonic biochemical sensing system.
