Abstract:Bismuth molybdate single-crystallites were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method at different pH values. The as-fabricated samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM); it has been found that the pH values of the precursors can significantly influence the structures of the products. Under the Bi/Mo ratio of 2:1 conditions (a nominal composition of Aurivillius structure), low pH leads to the formation of γ-Bi 2 MoO 6 with Aurivillius type structure, while neutral and higher pH values lead to the formation of γ-Bi 2 MoO 6 /Bi 2 O 3 composite, and Bi 2 O 3 , respectively. The photocatalytic activities of the samples with different structures were measured for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under simulated sunlight irradiation. Among the as-fabricated bismuth molybdate samples, the γ-Bi 2 MoO 6 exhibited superior photocatalytic efficiency to the γ-Bi 2 MoO 6 /Bi 2 O 3 composite and the Bi 2 O 3 , mainly due to its unique layered Aurivillius structure, smaller band gap structures and smaller particle sizes.

Abstract:In this work, we have elucidated the pH-induced structural evolution of bismuth molybdate photocatalyst based on a hydrothermal synthesis route. With increasing the pH value of precursor solution, pure Bi2MoO6 was synthesized at pH 2–5, Bi2MoO6-Bi4MoO9 mixture was obtained at pH 7–9, pure Bi4MoO9 was obtained at pH 11, and pure α-Bi2O3 was derived at pH 13. The as-derived samples mainly present particle-like shapes but with different particle sizes (except the observation of Bi2MoO6 nanowires in sample S-pH9). The photocatalytic performances between the samples were compared via the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under irradiation of simulated sunlight. The Bi2MoO6 sample synthesized at pH 2 exhibited the highest photodegradation performance (η(30 min) = 89.8 %, kapp = 0.05007 min−1) among the samples. The underlying photocatalytic mechanism and degradation pathways of MB were systematically analyzed. Moreover, the photodegradation performance of the Bi2MoO6 photocatalyst was further evaluated at different acidic-alkaline environments as well as in degrading various color and colorless organic pollutants, which provides an important insight into its practical application.

Abstract:Highly crystalline orthorhombic Bi2MoO6 particles with high visible-light photocatalytic activity have been controllably synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process without adding any surfactant. The morphologies of Bi2MoO6 with nanosheet and microrod can be selectively obtained by adjusting the pH value of the reactant. The formation mechanisms of nanosheet and microrod structures were then discussed based on the H+ cations adsorption abilities on different crystal faces. The Bi2MoO6 samples prepared at acidic condition showed 12 times higher photocatalytic activity than that prepared at basic condition under visible-light irradiation. The reason for the big difference in the photocatalytic activities for the Bi2MoO6 samples obtained at different pH values were systematically studied based on their shape, size and the variation of local structure.

Abstract:In this study, a one-step hydrothermal method was employed to tune the structural characteristics and properties of Bi 2 MoO 6 -based composite. The manipulation of the phase composition and crystallite dimensions of Bi 2 MoO 6 was achieved by varying the dosage of sodium molybdate, as evidenced by the XRD analyses. Moreover, the amalgamation of modified Bi 2 MoO 6 nanoparticles with supporting materials such as kaolinite and attapulgite was observed to potentially impede the phase transition of Bi 2 MoO 6 . Emphasis was also placed on the influence of support quantity on the composite's structural attributes. Experimental results substantiated that the Bi 2 MoO 6 -based composite (BMOK-1.5/1) exhibited exceptional adsorption and photocatalytic performance in the degradation of TC and RhB under visible light exposure, particularly when three-fifths of the theoretical quantity of sodium molybdate was incorporated. The enhanced performance is attributed to the composite's large specific surface area, increased surface hydroxyl groups, and diminished recombination rate of photogenerated carriers. This study introduces a straightforward approach for regulating the structural aspects of bismuth-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:A series of bismuth oxybromide photocatalysts were fabricated via a one-step hydrothermal method through pH value adjustment. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples were examined by degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO) and phenol. The results indicate that the B9 displayed the highest photocatalytic activities. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attribute to enhanced absorption in the visible region and the decreased recombination efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. The effect of hydrothermal pH value on the composition and morphology was explored and a synthesis process of bismuth oxybromide was proposed.
Controllable synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic performance of four kinds of bismuth-based materials

Abstract:Bismuth-based semiconductors have shown enormous potential for photocatalysis, and some of them have similarities in preparation, structure and properties. Therefore, developing efficient bismuth-based photocatalysts with controllable preparation routes has attracting researchers in this field. Herein, a series of bismuth-based photocatalysts including BiOI, Bi4O5I2, Bi2O2CO3 and metallic Bi were successfully synthesized by a one–pot hydrothermal method using the same raw materials at the same temperature with the control of pH value. The crystalline phase, morphology, microstructures, photoabsorption and band structure of the four bismuth-based photocatalysts were investigated. The photocatalytic activity was surveyed by degrading methyl orange (MO) and phenol with simulated solar light irradiation. The photodegradation results demonstrated that Bi4O5I2 displays the best photocatalytic activity, followed by BiOI, which is closely related to the intense photoabsorption, high charge separation efficiency and large specific surface area. This work may provide a reference for controllable synthesis of bismuth-based photocatalytic materials for environmental mediation.

Abstract:A new investigation on the variation rule of the structure, morphology, chemical composition and photocatalytic performance of bismuth oxyiodide synthesized by solvothermal method as a function of reaction conditions was performed here. The composition and morphology of the product could be determined by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that the particle size together with content of iodide in bismuth oxyiodide decrease with the increase of the concentration of reaction precursors. Hollow Bi4O5I2 microsphere with specific surface area as high as 120.88 m(2) g(-1) can be easily synthesized when the concentration of the reaction precursors finally increased to 62.5 mM. Photocatalytic water purification performance of the as-prepared samples was evaluated by using Rhodamine B (RhB) as a model contaminant. The results revealed that the hollow Bi4O5I2 exhibited the best performance among all the bismuth oxyodide synthesized here for the degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, the formation mechanism of the hierarchical hollow structure of bismuth oxyiodide was investigated by the dissolution-recrystallization mechanism. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:The three kinds of well-known bismuth molybdates α-Bi2Mo3O12, β-Bi2Mo2O9, and γ-Bi2MoO6 have been prepared employing mild hydrothermal methods. By tuning the Bi/Mo ratio and pH values, controlling formation of bismuth molybdates can be achieved. Low pH and high concentration of molybdenum lead to the formation of α-Bi2Mo3O12. High pH and high concentration of bismuth lead to the formation of γ-Bi2MoO6. The pure form of the β-phase can be prepared by calcining the hydrothermal product at 560°C. Photophysical and photocatalytic studies show that Aurivillius structure γ-Bi2MoO6 shows an intense absorption band in the visible light region and better photocatalytic activity than α-Bi2Mo3O12 and β-Bi2Mo2O9 under visible light irradiation. The factors that result in different photocatalytic activities for three kinds of photocatalysts are discussed.

Abstract:In this work, a facile molten salt-assisted assembly strategy was studied to achieve controlled synthesis of bismuth molybdate photocatalysts including Bi2MoO6, Bi6Mo2O15, Bi4MoO9 and Bi14MoO24. The transition of bismuth molybdates from Aurivillius-type to Fluorite-type could be selectively and efficiently achieved by adjusting the molten salt synthesis time. It was observed that the bismuth molybdate samples exhibited an obvious redshift in the absorption band with increasing of Bi/Mo molar ratio (from 3 to 14) in the materials, indicating a reduced band-gap. As a result, the photocatalytic activity of the Fluorite-type Bi14MoO24 sample for TC removal was higher than that of Bi2MoO6, Bi6Mo2O15 and Bi4MoO9 samples under a visible light irradiation. Furthermore, the mechanisms of phase change between Aurivillius-type and Fluorite-type as well as their band structures of the bismuth molybdates were systematically investigated in this work. This study not only provides a new strategy for the controlled synthesis of bismuth molybdates with different dimensionalities and structures, but also opens a new pathway to the design and optimization of advanced bismuth molybdates-based photocatalysts for applications in energy harvesting and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Bismuth silicate (BSO) nanobelts/nanosheets were successfully synthesized for the first time via a one-pot hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), N2adsorption-desorption (BET), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results showed that the concentration of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) had crucial effect on the formation of the phase and structure of BSO nanobelts/nanosheets, CTAB acted as a structure-directing reagent. A morphology-controlled process and formation mechanism are proposed. The bismuth silicate samples showed higher photocatalytic activity for the degradation of phenol and azo dye RhB than the commercial catalyst P25. The effects of surface area and morphology of the BSO samples on different photocatalytic activity were also discussed.

Abstract:Plate- and octahedron-like Pt/Bi5Nb3O15 heterostructures are controllably prepared by a hydrothermal treatment method combined with photodeposition in the presence of different surfactants, i.e., cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The composition, structure, morphology, optical absorption properties, and textural properties of as-prepared Pt/Bi5Nb3O15 are well-characterized, and their simulated sunlight and visible-light photocatalytic activity is evaluated by the degradation of two typical organic pollutants, i.e., methyl orange (MO) and p-nitrophenol (PNP). Special attention is paid to investigate and explain the influence of the morphologies on the photocatalytic activity of the heterostructured Pt/Bi5Nb3O15.

Abstract:In this work, γ-Bi2MoO6 samples with different morphologies and surface structures were prepared via simple solution methods and their photocatalytic degradations of rhodamine-B (RhB) were investigated under visible light irradiation. In spite of their lower BET surface area, we found that the γ-Bi2MoO6 sheets with the preferentially exposed {0 1 0} surface exhibited the greatly enhanced photocatalytic activity. The mechanism study and structural analysis of stoichiometric γ-Bi2MoO6 indicated that the particular reactive surface with much more oxygen defects and in-plane vacancies, derived from the larger distortion of the MoO6 octahedra, play a more important role of the enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Hierarchical Bi3.64Mo0.36O6.55/Bi2MoO6 isotype heterostructures were successfully prepared via a one-pot hydrothermal route by using Bi2O3 porous nanospheres as a sacrificial template. By tuning the reaction time, the formation process of the Bi3.64Mo0.36O6.55/Bi2MoO6 heterostructure involving Mo etching, phase transition and anisotropic growth was clearly identified. More importantly, the Bi3.64Mo0.36O6.55/Bi2MoO6 heterostructure displayed remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity for dye photodegradation than pure phase bismuth molybdate due to the efficient electron-hole separation and the interfacial photogenerated hole migration from inside the Bi3.64Mo0.36O6.55 layer to outside the Bi2MoO6 layer. The opposite hole migration from the outer layer to the inner layer was also detected in Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 heterostructures, which resulted in the decrease of photocatalytic activity, further verifying the importance of hole migration direction. This work provides a novel route to fabricate heterostructured photocatalysts, as well as gives a strategy for mediating the charge migration to improve photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Numerous bismuth-based semiconductors (BBSs) with sophisticated and desirable structures used as photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic degradation of water organic contaminants have attracted considerable attention. However, regulating the crystal phases and phase transition of BBSs for promoted photocatalytic performance is ignored. Herein, the unique crystal structure and band structure features of each typical BBSs, and the vital roles on phase controlling of each phase were systematically presented based on the classification of BBSs. Notably, the critical factors for the phase transition of BBSs and intrinsic driving forces endowed by phases of BBSs for enhanced photocatalytic performance of organic contaminants removal were also elucidated. This review will provide systematical guidelines and horizons for regulating the crystal phase and phase transition of BBSs, promoting photocatalytic degradation and mineralization of organic contaminants.

Abstract:Phase-controlled synthesis of bismuth ferrites has been achieved via hydrothermal route by adjusting the KOH concentration. The as-prepared powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction. The particle morphologies of the as-prepared powders evolve from nanoflakes, to self-assembled particles, and microparticles when the concentration of KOH was changed from 1.5M, 2.5M, to 3.5M, and 5M. Correspondingly, the main phase of the samples changed from orthorhombic Bi2Fe4O9, both Bi2Fe4O9 and BiFeO3, to pure rhombohedral BiFeO3. On the basis of these experiments, the phase formation and morphology evolution mechanism of the samples are discussed. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples was investigated by the photo-degradation of rhodamine-B solution.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysts have attracted considerable research attention because of their extensive range of applications in eliminating hazardous environmental pollutants. Herein, a compact process was introduced to prepare Bi2O3 photocatalyst from bismuthinite ore. This new process is simplified by eliminating the preparation of pure bismuth salts solutions or bismuth ingots compared with the traditional process and beneficial to the controllable preparation of Bi2O3. The synthesized samples were characterized by various analytical techniques and their photocatalytic performance was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation. Among the as-prepared photocatalysts, β-Bi2O3 exhibited much higher photocatalytic activities than α and δ-Bi2O3 for degradation of RhB. The much better photocatalytic activities of β-Bi2O3 was considered to be closely related to its smaller band gap, higher crystallinity and unique crystal structures. Given this, this work might open up a potential avenue for the large-scale preparation of Bi2O3 photocatalyst for advanced photocatalysis systems.
Nano-structured Bismuth Tungstate with Controlled Morphology: Fabrication, Modification, Environmental Application and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:Bismuth tungstate with different structures and morphologies show different properties. The structure and morphology have been proven to be critical factors to tune the electronic properties to influence photocatalytic performance. Notably, nano-structured bismuth tungstate were found to exhibit high activity in photocatalytic degradation process. Controllable fabrication on nano structures with desired morphology is indispensable to achieve the related properties well. However, a review that declare the correlation between the property and the fabrication, structure and morphology of bismuth tungstate is still absent. Therefore, we firstly summarize a series of recent fabrication methods for various dimensional nano structures of bismuth tungstate. Then the modification of nano-structured BWO to improve the photocatalytic performance are presented, including morphological manipulation, doping or substitution, solid solution fabrication, and compound formation. The mechanism of photocatalytic oxidation and reduction process over nano-structured bismuth tungstate is also explored, especially the role of radical species. Additionally, advanced environmental application are summarized. Finally, unresolved challenges and potential applications of nano-structured bismuth tungstate are presented for future research directions.

Abstract:The morphology of bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) was regulated by co-precipitation method by changing the solvent dosage and pH value.X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, surface area and pore structure analyzer, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflection spectrum (UV-Vis DRS) were used to characterize the phase structure, morphology, specific surface area and pore structure, microstructure, optical properties and band structure of the samples.In addition, the effects of morphology and amount of photocatalyst on the photocatalytic performance of BiOI were evaluated by degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB).The experimental results demonstrated that the morphology of BiOI nanopowders (flower-like, microspherical and layered) can be adjusted by changing the solvent dosage and pH value.The flower-like BiOI prepared by this method maintains a single-phase tetragonal structure with a small crystallite size and good crystallization.Flower-like structure BiOI exhibits excellent visible light absorption ability and the narrowest bandgap.Microspherical BiOI displays the best photocatalytic activity for RhB degradation.In addition, • OH, • O 2 -and h + all played a certain role in the photocatalytic degradation process.And the possible photocatalytic activity mechanism was also proposed.

Abstract:Bi2MoO6/(BiO)2CO3 heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route. It is found that introduced Bi2MoO6 can turn morphology of (BiO)2CO3 crystal and restrict growth of crystalline grain by changing Bi2MoO6 loadings. When Bi2MoO6 loading is lower, Bi2MoO6 can preferentially adhere on side of {001} crystal facet of (BiO)2CO3, which inhibit the growth rates in lateral orientation of {001} crystal facets and subsequently cause the preferentially growth in [001] orientation. With further increase of Bi2MoO6 loading, Bi2MoO6 nanoparticles can cover entire surface of (BiO)2CO3 crystal, which restrict largening of crystalline grain. The resulting Bi2MoO6/(BiO)2CO3 heterostructured photocatalysts exhibited higher activity for KN-R photo-degradation under artificial solar light.
