Abstract:We have studied the collaborative effects of phase configurations in the prophase spring (April and May) of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Southern Annular Mode (SAM) on abnormal precipitation in the ensuing summer (June and July) in southern China by utilizing the dataset of meteorological stations and NCEP reanalysis. Results demonstrate that the summer precipitation anomalies over southern China significantly respond to the various phase configurations of NAO and SAM, the dominant modes of interannual variability, after excluding the strongest ENSO years. Namely, the patterns of precipitation anomalies are primarily affected by the combination effects of NAO and SAM. The strong positive phase of SAM associated with strong negative phase of NAO synergistically makes significant normal anomalies of summer precipitation in the most areas of southern China, especially in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze as well as the vicinity to the south. On the contrary, coupling strong negative phase of SAM with strong positive phase of NAO strengthens negative anomalies in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze, implying collaborative negative effects. It is pointed out that inverting phases between SAM and NAO make the abnormal alteration of sea surface temperature in the northern tropical Atlantic through the ocean-atmosphere interactions, which collaboratively enhance the abnormal tripole-pattern signal of the sea surface temperature in the North Atlantic. Furthermore, the teleconnection wave train propagating over Eurasia, associated with the generated tripole-pattern signal, has significantly influenced the East Asian summer monsoon and summer precipitation in southern China. However, identical phases of SAM and NAO inhibit the development of the abnormal tripole-pattern signal of sea surface temperature in the North Atlantic to further weaken the impact on the summer precipitation in southern China, which needs further in-depth study in the future.
