Abstract:Health-related quality of life (HRQoL), which can be influenced by various aspects, especially socioeconomic status and lifestyle, has been identified as an important predictor of the prognosis of older adults. Dietary habit, a major part of lifestyle, can affect the nutritional status, which is closely correlated with the development of geriatric syndromes in the elderly.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to explore the associations between health - related quality of life (HRQoL), socioeconomic status and lifestyle, and the risk and severity of sarcopenia in the elderly population. Specifically, the researchers hope to identify which factors can predict or influence the risk of sarcopenia in the elderly by analyzing these factors, thus providing a scientific basis for early screening and prevention of sarcopenia. ### Main research contents 1. **Background**: - Sarcopenia is an age - related syndrome, characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength and function. - Health - related quality of life (HRQoL) is affected by multiple factors, especially socioeconomic status and lifestyle, and is considered an important predictor of prognosis in the elderly. - Dietary habits, as part of lifestyle, can affect nutritional status and are thus closely related to the development of age - related syndromes. 2. **Objectives**: - To study the relationships between HRQoL, socioeconomic status and lifestyle, and the risk and severity of sarcopenia. 3. **Methods**: - A cross - sectional retrospective study was conducted, including 2,877 participants aged ≥65 years. - The EuroQoL Five Dimensions questionnaire was used to assess HRQoL. - Socioeconomic status was assessed through educational level, occupation and family income. - Lifestyle was assessed through 12 items closely related to Chinese living habits. - Data on daily dietary habits were collected, including tea, alcohol, diet type and water intake. - The relationships between HRQoL, socioeconomic status and lifestyle, and the risk of sarcopenia were evaluated by multivariate regression logistic analysis. - The potential roles of age, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference in the impact of HRQoL on the risk of sarcopenia were explored by causal mediation analysis. 4. **Results**: - High HRQoL (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.69 - 0.95, P = 0.034) and high family income level (adjusted OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.57 - 0.95, P = 0.019) were negatively correlated with a lower risk of sarcopenia. - Higher intake of spicy foods (adjusted OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.09 - 1.81, P = 0.037) and occasional alcohol consumption (adjusted OR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.07 - 2.00, P = 0.016, compared with non - drinkers) were associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia. - Occasional skipping of breakfast (adjusted OR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.21 - 0.64, P < 0.001, compared with those who have breakfast every day) and lower salt intake (adjusted OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.52 - 0.96, P = 0.026, compared with those who consume a large amount of salt) were associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia. - Further causal mediation analysis showed that the estimated proportion of the mediating effect of age in the impact of HRQoL on the risk of sarcopenia was 28.0%. 5. **Conclusions**: - Overall, low HRQoL, low family income, higher intake of salt and spicy foods, and occasional alcohol consumption are associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia, while occasional skipping of breakfast is associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia. ### Keywords - Sarcopenia - Health - related quality of life - Family income - Lifestyle - Elderly ### Significance The results of this study provide valuable information and strategies for screening high - risk individuals for sarcopenia in the elderly population. In particular, the study emphasizes the importance of socioeconomic support and healthy dietary habits in the prevention of sarcopenia.
