Abstract:AbstractThe dynamics of the ultrafast excited-state multiple intermolecular proton transfer (PT) reactions in gas-phase complexes of 1H-pyrrolo[3,2-h]quinoline with water and methanol (PQ(H2O)n and PQ(MeOH)n, where n = 1, 2) is modeled using quantum-chemical simulations. The minimum energy ground-state structures of the complexes are determined. Molecular dynamics simulations in the first excited state are employed to determine reaction mechanisms and the time evolution of the PT processes. Excited-state dynamics results for all complexes reveal synchronous excited-state multiple proton transfer via solvent-assisted mechanisms along an intermolecular hydrogen-bonded network. In particular, excited-state double proton transfer is the most effective, occurring with the highest probability in the PQ(MeOH) cluster. The PT character of the reactions is suggested by nonexistence of crossings between ππ* and πσ* states.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The quantum dynamics of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is studied using a multilevel vibronic Hamiltonian and the Lindblad master equation. We simulate time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole (HBT) and 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline (HBQ), which suggests that the underlying mechanism behind the initial ultrafast rise and decay in the spectra is electronic state population that evolves simultaneously with proton wave packet dynamics. The results predict that the initial rise and decay signals at different wavelengths vary significantly with system properties in terms of their shape, the time, and the intensity of the maximum. These findings provide clues for data interpretation, mechanism validation, and control of the dynamics, and the model serves as an attempt toward clarifying ESIPT by direct comparison to time-resolved spectroscopy.

Abstract:Excited state intramolecular proton transfer process is of great importance in solar light conversion and white light emitting systems. The excited state intramolecular proton transfer process of 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone in acetonitrile was investigated by steady-state spectroscopy, transient absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It was demonstrated that 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone has three different structures in acetonitrile, namely, the original structure, the single proton transfer structure and the double proton transfer structure. The presence of multiple structures in the ground state is responsible for the observation of the wide and vibrational absorption spectrum of this molecule. The results of theoretical calculations as well as experimental results of ultraviolet (UV)-visible absorption and emission spectroscopy indicate that the intramolecular excited state proton transfer process exists in the single proton transfer structure. The relaxation pathways of this tautomer were revealed by transient absorption spectroscopy, global and target analysis.

Abstract:In this work, the single and double proton transfer dynamic process in the first excited state of 2,5-bis(2-benzothiazolyl)hydroquinone (BBTHQ) were theoretically investigated based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method. The calculations of primary bond lengths, bond angles, IR vibrational spectra and NCI analysis reveal that two intramolecular hydrogen bonds of BBTHQ are strengthened in the first excited state, which provides a driving force for excited state proton transfer. The frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) indicate the nature of intramolecular charge transfer. In addition, the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the ground state and first excite state were also constructed to further elucidate the mechanism of intramolecular proton transfer of BBTHQ.

Abstract:Vibrational dynamics associated with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer in 3 hydroxyflavone and 3-hydroxy-2-(thiophen-2-yl)chromen-4-one are characterized with ultrafast transient infrared spectroscopy. The spectroscopic data reveal rapid (<100 fs) proton transfer dynamics in both species, followed by vibrational relaxation of the tautomer products within a few picoseconds. Coherent coupling of the shared proton to low-frequency modes along the proton transfer coordinate is also observed.

Abstract:Excited-state intramolecular double proton transfer (ESIDPT) has received much attention because of its widespread existence in the life reactions of living organisms, and materials with this property are significant for their special luminescent properties. In this work, the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and OM2/multireference configuration interaction (OM2/MRCI) methods have been employed to study the static electronic structure calculations of the photochemistry and the possibility of ESIDPT process of hydroxyquinoline benzimidazole (HQB) molecule, along with the nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. The computational results show that the HQB molecule is relaxed to the S1-ENOL minimum after being excited to the Franck-Condon point in the S1 state. Subsequently, during the nonadiabatic deactivation process, the OH···N proton transfer and the twisting of benzimidazole occur before arriving at the single proton transfer conical intersection S1S0-KETO. Finally, the system can either return to the initial ground-state structure S0-ENOL or to the single proton transfer ground-state structure S0-KETO, both of which have almost the same probability. The dynamics simulations also show that no double proton transfer occurs. The excited-state lifetime of HQB is fitted to 1.1 ps, and only 64% of the dynamic trajectories return to the ground state within the 2.0 ps simulation time. We hope the detailed reaction mechanism of the HQB molecule will provide new insights into similar systems.

Tracking of the Molecular Motion in the Primary Event of Photoinduced Reactions of a Phytochromobilin Model

Abstract:The photoinduced processes of phytochromes have received great research interest for their important biological functions. Phytochromobilin (PΦB), one of the most important phytochrome chromophores, was selected as the prototype to study its photoinduced isomerization. The nonadiabatic dynamics of PΦB from the Pr configuration in the gas phase was investigated by the surface hopping method at the OM2/MRCI level. In the excited state, isolated PΦB does not display the rotation of the two terminal five-membered rings (ring A and ring D), which is assumed to govern the Pr → Pfr process in the protein. Instead, two S1/S0 conical intersection seams (CI01α and CI01β) characterized by the rotation of the two central rings (ring B and ring C) were proven to play essential roles for the photoisomerization of PΦB in the gas phase. These two conical intersections (CI01α and CI01β) are accessible by the twisting motions of the C9-C10 and C10-C11 bonds, respectively. The CI01α and CI01β seams, instead of their minimum-energy points, are responsible for the nonadiabatic dynamics. For both channels, the trajectories may propagate forward to the isomerization products or backward to the original Pr configuration after the S1 → S0 hops.

Abstract:Triazole compounds are important organic systems with excellent electronic properties, which has diagnostic potential in the fields of organic electronics and organic photovoltaics. The important photophysical nature of these systems is the transformation between the enol and keto forms after excited-state proton transfer. In this work, the IR vibrational spectrum, ESIPT mechanism and excited-state decay dynamics of 2,2'-(1-Phenyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diyl)diphenol (ExPh) are explored by using electronic structure calculations and non-adiabatic dynamics simulations. Two S1/S0 conical intersections with distinct proton transfer (ESIPT-I and ESIPT-II) involved were obtained. The associated two-dimensional S1 minimum-energy potential energy surface indicates that the dynamical roles of these two S1/S0 conical intersections in the S1 excited-state decay are quite different. The ESIPT-I reaction is more favorable to occur than the ESIPT-II process. Our dynamics simulations support this suspect with the whole trajectories decay to the ground state via the S1S0-1 conical intersection which involves ESIPT-I process. The ESIPT-involved efficient deactivation pathway can be partially responsible for the decrease of fluorescence emission. These results and ESIPT mechanisms are helpful for understanding the decay pathways of similar systems.

Abstract:We report multistate trajectory simulations, including coherence, decoherence, and multidimensional tunneling, of phenol photodissociation dynamics. The calculations are based on full-dimensional anchor-points reactive potential surfaces and state couplings fit to electronic structure calculations including dynamical correlation with an augmented correlation-consistent polarized valence double-zeta basis set. The calculations successfully reproduce the experimentally observed bimodal character of the total kinetic energy release spectra and confirm the interpretation of the most recent experiments that the photodissociation process is dominated by tunneling. Analysis of the trajectories uncovers an unexpected dissociation pathway for one quantum excitation of the O-H stretching mode of the Si state, namely, tunneling in a coherent mixture of states starting in a smaller R-OH (similar to 0.9-1.0 angstrom) region than has previously been invoked. The simulations also show that most trajectories do not pass dose to the S-1-S-2 conical intersection (they have a minimum gap greater than 0.6 eV), they provide statistics on the out-of-plane angles at the locations of the minimum energy adiabatic gap, and they reveal information about which vibrational modes are most highly activated in the products.
Chemical bond reorganization in intramolecular proton transfer revealed by ultrafast X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Abstract:Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-XPS) is used in a simulation study to monitor the excited state intramolecular proton transfer between oxygen and nitrogen atoms in 2-(iminomethyl)phenol. Real-time monitoring of the chemical bond breaking and forming processes is obtained through the time evolution of excited-state chemical shifts. By employing individual atomic probes of the proton donor and acceptor atoms, we predict distinct signals with opposite chemical shifts of the donor and acceptor groups during proton transfer. Details of the ultrafast bond breaking and forming dynamics are revealed by extending the classical electron spectroscopy chemical analysis to real time. Through a comparison with simulated time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy at the valence level, the distinct advantage of TR-XPS is demonstrated thanks to its atom specificity.
Destabilization of spin-Peierls phase via a charge-spin modulated Floquet state induced by intramolecular vibrational excitation

Abstract:The electronic state control using a periodic light field is one of the central subjects in photophysics. In molecular solids, intramolecular vibrations sometimes couple to intermolecular electron transfer, thus modulating electron and spin densities of each molecule. Here, we show that in a quasi-one-dimensional molecular solid K-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in which TCNQ molecules are dimerized by the spin-Peierls mechanism, an intramolecular vibrational excitation with a phase-locked mid-infrared pulse induces a charge-spin modulated Floquet state, which destabilizes the spin-Peierls phase. By detecting reflectivity changes of the intramolecular transition band along the mid-infrared electric field with 6.6-fs probe pulses, we detected high-frequency oscillations reflecting electron- and spin-density modulations synchronized with intramolecular vibrations. More significantly, we observed an oscillation of ~110 cm −1 due to a dimeric mode driven by a decrease in spin-Peierls dimerization. This dimerization reduction was confirmed by measuring transient reflectivity changes of the Mott-gap transition band. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of intramolecular vibrational excitation as a method for Floquet engineering in molecular solids.

Abstract:Nonradiative decay pathways associated with vibronically coupled S1(ππ*)–S2(nπ*) potential energy surfaces of 3‐ and 5‐hydroxychromones are investigated by employing the linear vibronic coupling approach. The presence of a conical intersection close to the Franck–Condon point is identified based on the critical examination of computed energetics and structural parameters of stationary points. We show that very minimal displacements of relevant atoms of intramolecular proton transfer geometry are adequate to drive the molecule toward the conical intersection nuclear configuration. The evolving wavepacket on S1(ππ*) bifurcates at the conical intersection: a part of the wavepacket moves to S2(nπ*) within a few femtoseconds while the other decays to S1 minimum. Our findings indicate the possibility of forming the proton transfer tautomer product via S2(nπ*), competing with the traditional pathway occurring on S1(ππ*).

Abstract:The photophysical properties of N-butyl-4-hydroxyl-1, 8-naphthalimide (BOH) and N-(morpholinoethyl)−4-hydroxy-1, 8-naphthalimide (MOH) in various solvents are presented and the density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods at the B3LYP/TZVP theoretical level are adopted to investigate the UV–visible absorption and emission data. An efficient intermolecular excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reaction occurs for both compounds in DMSO, methanol and water. In aqueous solution, both BOH and MOH can be used as ratiometric pH probes and perform as strong photoacids with pKa*=−2.2, −2.4, respectively. Most interestingly, in the steady-state fluorescence spectra of BOH and MOH in concentrated HCl, an unexpected blue-shifted band is observed and assumed to originate from the contact ion pair (CIP) formed by hydronium ion and the anionic form of the photoacid resulted from ESPT. Theoretical calculations are used to simulate the CIP in the case of BOH, which afford reasonable results compared with the experimental data.
Excited‐State THz Vibrations in Aggregates of PtII Complexes Contribute to the Enhancement of Near‐Infrared Emission Efficiencies**

Abstract:The exploration of deactivation mechanisms for near-infrared(NIR)-emissive organic molecules has been a key issue in chemistry, materials science and molecular biology. In this study, based on transient absorption spectroscopy and transient grating photoluminescence spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the aggregated Pt-II complex 4H (efficient NIR emitter) exhibits collective out-of-plane motions with a frequency of 32 cm(-1) (0.96 THz) in the excited states. Importantly, similar THz characteristics were also observed in analogous Pt-II complexes with prominent NIR emission efficiency. The conservation of THz motions enables excited-state deactivation to proceed along low-frequency vibrational coordinates, contributing to the suppression of nonradiative decay and remarkable NIR emission. These novel results highlight the significance of excited-state vibrations in nonradiative processes, which serve as a benchmark for improving device performance.
Time-dependent wave-packet approach to the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer based on relaxed potential energy surfaces of benzimidazole molecule

Abstract:The wave-packet dynamical approach was used to investigate the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (PT) of 5’-amino-2-(2’-hydroxyphenyl) benzimidazole (P1) based on the relaxed potential surfaces. For the involved PT process of P1 molecule, the quantum chemical calculation shows that relative to the ground state S0 with a single potential well, the excited state S1 with a double potential well can give much dynamical information. It is also found that because of the existence of a shallow potential barrier on the excited state S1, the PT in it is much easier than that in the ground state S0. When a laser field is used to pump the wave packet and induce the PT process, the external field parameters, such as the frequency and the envelope, have also influences on the PT process because of the impact of both pump time and the energy gap between two states. This kind of external field effect on the PT process gives a specific perspective to examine its dynamical mechanism and provides a reference for exploring the light-induced biophysical processes.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The spectral‐luminescence properties and photochemical conversions of phenol were analyzed for an isolated molecule as well as in water solvents in a continuum implicit model and explicit atomistic surroundings. This involved employing cut‐edge hybrid quantum‐classical methodologies to generate static optical spectra and the excited dissipative crossing potential energy curves. A combination of electronic excitations, gradient calculations, and embedding electrostatic potential fitting charges on quantum‐classical molecular dynamic propagation trajectories provided statistically averaged absorption spectra. The mixed‐reference spin‐flip multiconfigurational linear response method based on reference triplet preprocessed in the time‐dependent density‐functional theory was utilized to determine conical intersections between the lowest excited and ground states, as well as two‐stage transitions from the second excitation to the ground state. Non‐adiabatic quantum‐classical molecular dynamics defined photodissipative trajectories of excited states, their lifetimes, and crossing points through trajectory surface hopping together with the mixed‐reference spin‐flip and embedding electrostatic potential fitting approaches. Dyson orbitals of the extended Koopmans' theorem were applied to reveal the nature of molecular states at conical intersections and key points on photodynamic trajectories. Potential hydroxyl group cleavage predicted with conical intersections searching turns to “swift” OH deprotonation through |π→⟩ transition along photodynamic propagations in contrast with “long” processes leading to benzene ring deformation with stable OH bond.

Abstract:We theoretically probe into photo-induced hydrogen bonding effects between S0 and S1 states as well as excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behavior for 2,6-bis(benzothiazolyl-2-yl)phenol (DBTP) system. By analyzing primary geometrical parameters involved in hydrogen bond, we confirm O36-H37···N35 of DBTP should be strengthened in the first excited state. By constructing potential energy surfaces for DBTP along with ESITP reactional orientation, we affirm that DBTP molecule undergoes the ultrafast ESIPT process. Once excited to the S1 state, DBTP quickly transfers its proton forming DBTP-PT tautomer. That is why no fluorescence of DBTP could be reported in experiment.

Abstract:Vibronic coupling is a central issue in molecular spectroscopy. Here we investigate vibronic coupling within a single pentacene molecule in real space by imaging the spatial distribution of single-molecule electroluminescence via highly localized excitation of tunneling electrons in a controlled plasmonic junction. The observed two-spot orientation for certain vibronic-state imaging is found to be evidently different from the purely electronic 0–0 transition, rotated by 90°, which reflects the change in the transition dipole orientation from along the molecular short axis to the long axis. Such a change reveals the occurrence of strong vibronic coupling associated with a large Herzberg–Teller contribution, going beyond the conventional Franck–Condon picture. The emergence of large vibration-induced transition charges oscillating along the long axis is found to originate from the strong dynamic perturbation of the anti-symmetric vibration on those carbon atoms with large transition density populations during electronic transitions.

Abstract:The internal rotational motion and the ground- and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (GISPT, EISPT) reaction of 2-hydroxybenzophenone (HBP) are studied at the B3LYP/6-31G**, CIS/6-31G** and TD B3LYP/6-31++G** level. The calculated results show that there is only one minimum at the S0 and S1 state, the enol form (E) is the single minimum at the S0 state, and its rotamers and tautomers are with more than 8.24 and 10.43 kcal/mol less stable, respectively, however, the keto tautomer (K*) is the single minimum at the S1 state. Therefore, the ground- and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer reacts without a barrier between E and K or E* and K*. The energy gap between the first excited electronic state S1 1(π, π*)1 and the second excited electronic state S2 2(n, π*)1 of E is only 0.019eV at CIS/6-31G** level. So the S0→S1 and S0→S2 excitation may occur at the same time, and the S1 state may occur the EISPT process and result a large Stokes shifted fluorescence. And the S2 state may through internal conversion to the S1 state or intersystem crossing to the T2 state. These theoretical results contrast with the conclusion of Nakayama and his coworkers [M. Hagiri, N. Ichinose, J. Kinugasa, T. Iwasa, T. Nakayama, Chem. Lett. 33 (2004) 326] stating the present of two ground-state conformers of HBP.

Abstract:Reactions involving proton transfer, especially those taking place in excited states (ESPT), received considerable attention. These reactions underlie many biological and biochemical processes that are vital to life. DNA mutations excited state funnelling and transport phenomena are just examples. Among many molecules undergoing this type of photoreactions, phenols show a unique property, the so-called photoacidity. In the present communication, solvent (methanol and ammonia) assisted excited state proton transfer and photo acidity of 2-hydroxypyridine (2HP) are investigated at the DFT M06-2X / def2pvv level of theory. Excited states of 2HP and its complexes with methanol and ammonia were examined at two levels. First, sampling a Wigner distribution of 300 points, the photoabsorption spectra were simulated within the nuclear ensemble approximation. Second, simulation of the dynamics of the excited states with the surface hopping method. Several separate spectral windows with three hundred trajectories each, were considered. Lifetime of excited states and photochemical channels observed were discussed.
