Abstract:A broadband snapshot full-Stokes polarizing-spectral-imaging (PSI) is achieved by reciprocally designing a metal-insulator-metal metasurface with anisotropic detour phase to generate polarizing-spectrally dependent dot-array-shaped point-spread-function (PSF), and the high dimensional information can be retrieved from one snapshot intensity image through the post-computation. It overcomes the restriction on the wavelength selection in principle faced by the propagating phase modulation scheme used in the previous metasurface-based PSI approaches, and brings advantages including compact configuration, fast acquisition and broadband operation. The dependence of the engineered PSF on the polarizing-spectral channel across 100 nm in the visible band is experimentally verified and analyzed, consistent well with the simulation. Reconstruction results for the high dimensional imaging are presented in simulations and experiments based on the established model.

Abstract:Polarization multiplexing of metasurfaces conventionally requires the synthesis of both geometric and dynamic phases of meta-atoms. We propose a dynamic-phase-only polarization-multiplexing metasurface that consists of three types of polarization-decoupled meta-atoms and covers the 0–2π phase range. As illustrative examples, we designed and investigated a polarized beam splitter that can independently deflect x- and y-polarized incident lights at arbitrary angles. Furthermore, we designed and studied polarization-multiplexing metasurface-holography embracing double channels of orthogonal polarizations. Both metadevices demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. This study paves the way for the design of polarization-multiplexing electromagnetic structures for application in metamaterials and metasurfaces.

Abstract:Single pixel imaging as an alternative to traditional imaging methods, has attracted extensive attention in various research fields. Metasurfaces with subwavelength unit cells and compact footprint can be used as a substitute for traditional optical elements. In this work, we propose a single pixel imaging scheme based on metasurface composed of photon sieves, where spatial modulation is realized through shifting. Spatial multiplexing capability is demonstrated by this shifting mode, which can obtain more patterns in limited space and greatly increase the mask capacity. Benefited from the simple structure and easy manufacture of photon sieves, large capacity metasurface can be manufactured. Meanwhile, metasurfaces can simplify the single pixel imaging system, leading to the system miniaturization and integration. In addition, numerical and optical experiments prove that our proposal can operate at the range from the entire visible light to near-infrared light. Such scheme provides a new way for single pixel imaging and would be applied in microscopic imaging, dynamic imaging, hyperspectral imaging, and so on.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have exhibited great capabilities to control electromagnetic waves, and many multifunctional metasurfaces were recently proposed. However, although angle-multiplexed meta-devices were successfully realized in reflection geom-etries, their transmission-mode counterparts are difficult to achieve due to the additional requirements. Here, we design and fabricate a transmissive angle-multiplexed meta-polarizer in the microwave regime based on a multilayer metasurface. Coupled-mode-theory analyses reveal that the device exhibits distinct angle-dependent transmissive responses under exci-tations with different polarizations, and such differences are further enhanced by multiple scatterings inside the device. Microwave experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations and theoretical analyses.

Abstract:Due to their unprecedented ability to flexibly manipulate the parameters of light, metasurfaces offer a new approach to integrating multiple functions in a single optical element. In this paper, based on a single-celled metasurface composed of chiral umbrella-shaped metal–insulator–metal (MIM) unit cells, a strategy for simultaneous multiple polarization generation and wavefront shaping is proposed. The unit cells can function as broadband and high-performance polarization-preserving mirrors. In addition, by introducing a chiral-assisted Aharonov–Anandan (AA) geometric phase, the phase profile and phase retardation of two spin-flipped orthogonal circular polarized components can be realized simultaneously and independently with a single-celled metasurface via two irrelevant parameters. Benefiting from this flexible phase manipulation ability, a vectorial hologram generator and metalens array with spatially varying polarizations were demonstrated. This work provides an effective approach to avoid the pixel and efficiency losses caused by the intrinsic symmetry of the PB geometric phase, and it may play an important role in the miniaturization and integration of multipolarization-involved displays, real-time imaging, and spectroscopy systems.

Abstract:Quantum imaging has non-negligible advantages in terms of sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and novel imaging schemes. Based on metasurfaces, the information density and stability of the quantum imaging system can be further improved. Here we experimentally demonstrate that two patterns, simultaneously and independently superimposed on a high-efficiency dielectric metasurface, can be remotely switched via polarization-entangled photon pairs. Furthermore, using the time-correlated property of entangled photon pairs, the information carried by quantum light can be remarkably discriminated from background noise. This work confirms that the phase manipulation of quantum light with metasurfaces has a huge potential in the field of quantum imaging, quantum state tomography, and also promises real-world quantum metasurface devices.

Abstract:Polarization, one of the fundamental properties of light, is critical for certain imaging applications because it captures information from the scene that cannot directly be recorded by traditional intensity cameras. Currently, mainstream approaches for polarization imaging rely on strong dichroism of birefringent crystals or artificially fabricated structures that exhibit a high diattenuation typically exceeding 99%, which corresponds to a polarization extinction ratio (PER) >~100. This not only limits the transmission efficiency of light, but also makes them either offer narrow operational bandwidth or be non-responsive to the circular polarization. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot full-Stokes polarization camera incorporating a disordered metasurface array with weak dichroism. The diattenuation of the metasurface array is ~65%, which corresponds to a PER of ~2. Within the framework of compressed sensing, the proposed disordered metasurface array serves as an efficient sensing matrix. By incorporating a mask-aware reconstruction algorithm, the signal can be accurately recovered with a high probability. In our experiments, the proposed approach exhibits high-accuracy full-Stokes polarimetry and high-resolution real-time polarization imaging. Our demonstration highlights the potential of combining meta-optics with reconstruction algorithms as a promising approach for advanced imaging applications.

Abstract:Polarization is an inherent property of light that contains information that is usually ignored by intensity-based sensors. A polarization imaging system forms the images over an extended scene in different polarization basis sets, which is widely used in fields ranging from target detection to biosensing. Typically, conventional polarization imaging systems based on polarization filtering form images only for linearly polarized light and use bulky and complex elements. Here, we proposed an all-silicon metasurface for midinfrared (MIR) active-illumination polarization imaging. The metasurface operates at a wavelength of 10.6 μm and functions as a division of focal plane imaging mask. In experiment, the single-layered metasurface can simultaneously form images in two orthogonal polarization basis sets in a real-time condition, which realizes both linear polarization imaging and chiral imaging. This work unveils the potential of compact MIR polarization detection metasystems.

Abstract:Diffraction gratings are crucial optical elements in various optical systems, which can realize tailored diffraction energy distributions as well as phase modulations based on Fourier series. Meanwhile, the polarization gratings can produce arbitrarily specified polarization states on a set of desired diffraction orders for realizing polarimeter. However, simultaneously and independently tailoring the encoded phase profiles and polarization states in different diffraction orders has not been investigated previously. Here, a dielectric metasurface with the capability of generating different holographic images (generalized phase profiles) in different diffraction orders with controllable polarization states is proposed. Such functionality is achieved by applying the double‐phase method into the metasurface design process for manipulating the complex amplitude distributions of two orthogonal polarization bases. Furthermore, in order to prove that the proposed design strategy is suitable to achieve complicated wavefront modulation in a straightforward and convenient manner, a vectorial holographic image with spatially continuous polarization distribution is also obtained without any iteration process. The proposed method may pave the way to achieve a variety of applications such as beam shaping, polarization imaging as well as multifunctional optical systems. A dielectric metasurface with the capability of generating different holographic images in different diffraction orders with controllable polarization states is successfully demonstrated. Such functionality is achieved by manipulating the complex amplitude distributions of two orthogonal polarization bases. The proposed method may pave the way to achieve applications such as beam shaping, polarization imaging as well as multifunctional optical system.

Abstract:Multispectral polarization generation and manipulation can increase information capacity. A single metasurface is used to simultaneously realize wavelength separation and polarization generation. Six polarization states with different wavelengths are generated. This work can add extra degrees of freedom for carrying information, opening a new window for portable polarization optics where low‐cost and miniaturized systems are in high demand. Polarization state generation plays an important role in optics and are applied in many fields. Multispectral polarization manipulation can increase information capacity. To meet the requirement of miniaturization and integration, it is desirable to generate multispectral polarization states with a compact optical device. a metasurface device is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which can simultaneously realize wavelength separation and polarization generation. A geometric metasurface is used to realize the phase and wavelength multiplexing. Six polarization states with different wavelengths are generated. Customized polarization states with predesigned wavelength information can add extra degrees of freedom for carrying information, opening a new window for portable polarization optics where low‐cost and miniaturized systems are in high demand.

Abstract:Metasurface has the ability to flexibly modulate the wavefront and detect the polarization states, thus receiving widespread research attention. The combination of polarization multiplexing techniques and focused beams with polarization information provides a new approach to compact polarization detection behavior. Here, an all-dielectric metasurface based on polarization multiplexing encoding technique is demonstrated and assigns the independent phase distributions to x- and y-polarized channels to separate different polarized components. Combining Stokes parameters and visualized polarization ellipses, realizing one-to-one mapping of the incident polarization states with far-field images. We obtain the Poincaré sphere and visualized polarization ellipses based on Stokes parameters to verify the polarization detection ability of the designed metasurface. The proposed scheme is expected to provide potential applications in fields such as full-Stokes polarization detection, high-resolution imaging, and terahertz communication.

Abstract:Parabolic-phased profile was commonly utilized for concave or convex metalens. Here, we report for the first time using such approach for determinant and polarization independent diffusion of scattering waves in broadband and wide incident angles by engineering parabolic-phased subarrays in coding sequences. For verification, a 1-bit metasurface is designed, across C, X, and Ku bands. Theoretical, numerical and experimental results demonstrate that our approach is very powerful in distributing the scattering energy more uniformly than available approach using non-gradient subarrays. The -7.5 dB fractional bandwidth is obtained as 88% and the diffuse scattering behavior can be preserved up to 60 off normal incidence irrespective of polarizations. Our approach, simple and free of time-consuming optimizations, paves the way for electromagnetic compatibility and stealth applications under bistatic detection.

Abstract:Polarimetry plays an indispensable role in the light-matter interactions. Nevertheless, conventional components developed for polarization measurements suffer from bulky volume and spatial alignment schemes, causing them to reveal limited performance in determining inhomogeneous polarization distributions. Here, we propose a polarization detection scheme based on pixelated all-dielectric metasurfaces using spin-multiplexing coding techniques. The polarization resolving capability of the pixelated metasurface under homogeneous linearly polarized illumination was first evaluated, and the extracted peak coordinates were used to establish an exact functional relationship with the azimuthal angle. Subsequently, the measurement of spatial inhomogeneous polarization was further explored with a focusing matrix assembled from pixelated metasurfaces. The proposed polarization detection strategy can be extended to other spectral bands without discrimination, stimulating potential applications in high-resolution imaging, sensing and data communication.

Abstract:When light scatters off an object, its polarization, in general, changes—a transformation described by the object's Mueller matrix. Mueller matrix imaging is an important technique in science and technology to image the spatially varying polarization response of an object of interest, to reveal rich information otherwise invisible to traditional imaging. Here we conceptualize, implement and demonstrate a compact Mueller matrix imaging system—composed of a metasurface to produce structured polarization illumination and a metasurface for polarization analysis—that can, in a single shot, acquire all 16 components of an object's spatially varying Mueller matrix over an image. Our implementation, which is free of any moving parts or bulk polarization optics, should enable and empower applications in real-time medical imaging, material characterization, machine vision, target detection and other important areas.

Abstract:Due to nanometric hotspots in a metallic nanoantenna or phase sensitivities in a metasurface, precise placement of a quantum emitter is rigorously required to tailor single-photon emission, which considerably increases alignment and fabrication difficulties. Here, a scalar-superposition metasurface is proposed to achieve robust placement of a quantum emitter and meanwhile tailor the single-photon emission to a desired polarization (e.g., linear, circular, or elliptical polarization). In this metasurface, the far-field interference of the scattered fields from all unit nanostructures can be simplified as a scalar-superposition process. As a result, the emission polarization state is insensitive to the phase or the position of the quantum emitter. The simualtion and experiment show that the placement accuracy of the quantum emitter relative to the center of the metasurface is released to about 3 lambda (wavelength), which is dozens of times greater than that in previous works. This high placement robustness together with the deflection effect of emission directions of the metasurfaces further enable to tailor the polarization of multiple single-photon emission spots. The strategy of the scalar-superposition metasurfaces with robust placement makes the nanostructure design and alignment easy, and it also might provide new possibilities for realizing multifunctional and novel quantum nanophotonic devices.
