Abstract:Mathematical models for communities of interacting species usually seek to relate the population growth rates to the various inter- and intraspecific interactions. If birth is a continuous process, so that the populations grow in a continuous manner, one ends up with a system of differential equations; conversely, if generations are discrete, so that population growth is a discrete process, the result is a system of difference equations. Corresponding to any particular differential equation system is an analogous difference equation system, which embodies identical biological assumptions except that time is a discrete rather than a continuous variable. I make explicit the relation between the stability properties of any such pair of models, showing in precisely what sense the populations in the difference equation system tend to be less stable than those in the differential equation model. Abstract:Populations exhibiting partial migration consist of two groups of individuals: Those that mi- grate between habitats, and those that remain fixed in a single habitat. We propose several discrete-time population models to investigate the coexistence of migrants and residents. The first class of models is linear, and we distinguish two scenarios. In the first, there is a single egg pool to which both populations contribute. A fraction of the eggs is destined to become migrants, and the remainder become residents. In a second model, there are two distinct egg pools to which the two types contribute, one corresponding to residents and another to migrants. The asymptotic growth or decline in these models can be phrased in terms of the value of the basic reproduction number being larger or less than one respectively. A second class of models incorporates density dependence effects. It is assumed that increased densities in the various life history stages adversely affect the success of transitioning of individuals to subsequent stages. Here too we consider models with one or two egg pools. Although these are nonlinear models, their asymptotic dynamics can still be classified in terms of the value of a locally defined basic reproduction number: If it is less than one, then the entire population goes extinct, whereas it settles at a unique fixed point consisting of a mixture of residents and migrants, when it is larger than one. Thus, the value of the basic reproduction number can be used to predict the stable coexistence or collapse of populations exhibiting partial migration.

Abstract:In this paper, a meta-population model proposed by Haski [I. Hanski, Coexistence of competitors in patchy environment, Ecology 64 (1983) 493–500] is studied. The model involves two competing species, and allows for a varying difference between local and regional time scales. Four parameters Ri,ℛi,i=1,2 are defined for species i. Our results show that Ri,ℛi are the thresholds which determine the invasion of species i into the empty patches and the patches occupied by species j,j=1,2,j≠i, respectively. If ℛ1>1 and ℛ2>1 the coexistence of two competing species is proved by the theory of uniform persistence. For the pure migration competition case the results indicate that the limit set of the system is a closed orbit if it contains no equilibria.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of interacting agents from two distinct inter-mixed populations: One population includes active agents that follow a predetermined velocity field, while the second population contains exclusively passive agents, i.e. agents that have no preferred direction of motion. The orientation of their local velocity is affected by repulsive interactions with the neighboring agents and environment. We present two models that allow for a qualitative analysis of these mixed systems. We show that the residence times of this type of systems containing mixed populations is strongly affected by the interplay between these two populations. After showing our modeling and simulation results, we conclude with a couple of mathematical aspects concerning the well-posedness of our models.

Abstract:Single species population models and discrete stochastic gene frequency models are two standards of mathematical biology important for the evolution of populations. An agent based model is presented which reproduces these models and then explores where these models agree and disagree under relaxed specifications. For the population models, the requirement of homogeneous mixing prevents prediction of extinctions due to local resource depletion. These models also suggest equilibrium based on attainment of constant population levels though underlying population characteristics may be nowhere close to equilibrium. The discrete stochastic gene frequency models assume well mixed populations at constant levels. The models' predictions for non-constant populations in strongly oscillating and chaotic regimes are surprisingly good, only diverging from the ABM at the most chaotic levels.

Results for single-species models and models with more than two species are also referred to for some topics discussed in the chapter. Theoretical studies of spatially distributed populations with restricted migration between patches have revealed a fundamental tendency for populations to become spatially organized into spiral or chaotic patterns of local abundance. A necessary condition for these patterns are unstable local dynamics, but the results persist with very low host rates of increase, very low migration rates, even if a small minority of adults disperse much more widely. This chapter generalizes the single-species Levins model to include the three simplest ecological relationships between two species coexisting as metapopulations: competition, predation, and mutualism. Abstract:Population dynamic models can forecast changes in the abundances of multiple interconnected species, which makes them potentially powerful tools for managing ecological communities, yet they remain largely under-utilised in applied settings. High data requirements and the ability to only model a narrow range of ecological interactions and/or trophic levels together limits their usefulness when faced with complex and data-poor systems, where beneficial (e.g. mutualism) and harmful (e.g. competition) interactions may operate simultaneously within and between species. We present a model of population dynamics that can describe a wide range of ecological interaction outcomes with a simple, unified structure. Species growth rates are constrained by a maximum growth rate parameter which prevents the risk of population explosions even in the case of mutualism. Species interactions are defined by two, not mutually-exclusive interactions matrices that describe the effects of beneficial and harmful interactions respectively, together providing the potential for the net effect of interactions between one species and another to switch from beneficial to harmful as population density increases. This model recreates classic dynamics in two-species mutualistic, competitive, and predator-prey scenarios, allowing us to model a wide range of trophic levels and interaction types together within the same equation. The maximum growth rate parameter, theoretically based in intrinsic constraints on reproduction, can be parameterised from a wide range of sources including natural history, historical data, and breeding programs. We illustrate the potential of this model with a data-poor case study of a threatened species and two interacting predators. This new model is generaliseable to a wide range of natural ecological communities. Its model structure lowers data requirements whilst remaining intuitive and biologically realistic, making it an accessible option for predicting community-wide population changes in applied contexts where data is sparse and/or uncertain.

Abstract:Network data arises through observation of relational information between a collection of entities. Recent work in the literature has independently considered when (i) one observes a sample of networks, connectome data in neuroscience being a ubiquitous example, and (ii) the units of observation within a network are edges or paths, such as emails between people or a series of page visits to a website by a user, often referred to as interaction network data. The intersection of these two cases, however, is yet to be considered. In this paper, we propose a new Bayesian modelling framework to analyse such data. Given a practitioner-specified distance metric between observations, we define families of models through location and scale parameters, akin to a Gaussian distribution, with subsequent inference of model parameters providing reasoned statistical summaries for this non-standard data structure. To facilitate inference, we propose specialised Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) schemes capable of sampling from doubly-intractable posterior distributions over discrete and multi-dimensional parameter spaces. Through simulation studies we confirm the efficacy of our methodology and inference scheme, whilst its application we illustrate via an example analysis of a location-based social network (LSBN) data set.

Abstract:The internal behaviour of a population is an important feature to take account of when modelling their dynamics. In line with kin selection theory, many social species tend to cluster into distinct groups in order to enhance their overall population fitness. Temporal interactions between populations are often modelled using classical mathematical models, but these sometimes fail to delve deeper into the, often uncertain, relationships within populations. Here, we introduce a stochastic framework that aims to capture the interactions of animal groups and an auxiliary population over time. We demonstrate the model's capabilities, from a Bayesian perspective, through simulation studies and by fitting it to predator-prey count time series data. We then derive an approximation to the group correlation structure within such a population, while also taking account of the effect of the auxiliary population. We finally discuss how this approximation can lead to ecologically realistic interpretations in a predator-prey context. This approximation also serves as verification to whether the population in question satisfies our various assumptions. Our modelling approach will be useful for empiricists for monitoring groups within a conservation framework and also theoreticians wanting to quantify interactions, to study cooperation and other phenomena within social populations.

Abstract:We formulate models for the spread of infection on networks that are amenable to analysis in the large population limit. We distinguish three different levels: (1) binding sites, (2) individuals, and (3) the population. In the tradition of Physiologically Structured Population Models, the formulation starts on the individual level. Influences from the `outside world' on an individual are captured by environmental variables. These environmental variables are population level quantities. A key characteristic of the network models is that individuals can be decomposed into a number of conditionally independent components: each individual has a fixed number of `binding sites' for partners. The Markov chain dynamics of binding sites are described by only a few equations. In particular, individual-level probabilities are obtained from binding-site-level probabilities by combinatorics while population-level quantities are obtained by averaging over individuals in the population. Thus we are able to characterize population-level epidemiological quantities, such as $R_0$, $r$, the final size, and the endemic equilibrium, in terms of the corresponding variables.

Abstract:We study two models of population with migration. We assume that we are given infinitely many islands with the same number r of resources, each individual consuming one unit of resources. On an island lives an individual whose genealogy is given by a critical Galton-Watson tree. If all the resources are consumed, any newborn child has to migrate to find new resources. In this sense, the migrations are constrained, not random. We will consider first a model where resources do not regrow, so the r first born individuals remain on their home island, whereas their children migrate. In the second model, we assume that resources regrow, so only r people can live on an island at the same time, the supernumerary ones being forced to migrate. In both cases, we are interested in how the population spreads on the islands, when the number of initial individuals and available resources tend to infinity. This mainly relies on computing asymptotics for critical random walks and functionals of the Brownian motion.

Abstract:Continuous‐space population models can yield significantly different results from their panmictic counterparts when assessing evolutionary, ecological or population genetic processes. However, the computational burden of spatial models is typically much greater than that of panmictic models due to the overhead of determining which individuals interact with one another and how strongly they interact. While these calculations are necessary to model local competition that regulates the population density, they can lead to prohibitively long runtimes. Here, we present a novel modelling method in which the resources available to a population are abstractly represented as an additional layer of the simulation. Instead of interacting directly with one another, individuals interact indirectly via this resource layer. We find that this method closely matches other spatial models, yet can dramatically increase the speed of the model, allowing the simulation of much larger populations. In addition to improved runtimes, models structured in this manner exhibit other desirable characteristics, including more explicit control over population density near the edge of the simulated area, and an efficient route for modelling complex heterogeneous landscapes.

Abstract:Evolutionary forces resulted from competitions between different populations are common, which change the evolutionary behavior of a single population. In an isolated population of coordination games of two strategies (e.g., s_{1} and s_{2}), the previous studies focused on determining the fixation probability that the system is occupied by only one strategy (s_{1}) and their expectation times, given an initial mixture of two strategies. In this work, we propose a model of two interdependent populations, disclosing the effects of the interaction strength on fixation probabilities. In the well-mixing limit, a detailed linear stability analysis is performed, which allows us to find and to classify the different equilibria, yielding a clear picture of the bifurcation patterns in phase space. We demonstrate that the interactions between populations crucially alter the dynamic behavior. More specifically, if the coupling strength is larger than some threshold value, the critical initial density of one strategy (s_{1}) that corresponds to fixation is significantly delayed. Instead, the two populations evolve to the opposite state of all (s_{2}) strategy, which are in favor of the red queen hypothesis. We delineate the extinction time of strategy (s_{1}) explicitly, which is an exponential form. These results are validated by systematic numerical simulations.

Abstract:Several models have been proposed as an extension to the classical Holling's disc equation to evaluate the predator and prey interactions and their applied aspect in biological control and population regulation of the target organisms. In a one prey and two predator dynamic system with mutual interference ( m ) as a quadratic parameter of predator density, an evaluation was made to the resultant impact on the prey. A simulation was carried out to see the extinction of prey and the stability of the system at origin, i.e., when all the three species are extinct. We assumed the data obtained for the interactions between the mosquito and the water bug predators that are common in the freshwater wetlands and involved in the population regulation. Despite the benefits to prey population due to interference competition, the expected extinction of prey is still observed. With varying magnitudes of m the declining growth curve of prey population, shifted. The equation proposed was also compared with Crowley–Martin functional response, and considerable differences were observed in selected instances when compared for the growth rate of the predators, in a species-specific manner. The stability of the system was deduced with eigenvalues of Jacobian matrix at origin to prove the extinction is stable. Our assessment supports the possible cooccurrence of the predators and mosquito prey in the wetlands with the mutual interference being one of the major factors.

Abstract:In this work we consider three species competing with each other in the same habitat. One of the species lives in the entire habitat, competing with the other two species, while the other two inhabit two disjoint regions of the habitat. These two populations just interact on a region/interface which acts as a geographical barrier. This barrier condition causes a drastic change in species behaviour compared to the classical Lotka-Volterra competitive model, showing very rich and new different situations depending on the several parameters involved in the system.

Abstract:We study a Hegselmann-Krause type opinion formation model for a system of two populations. The two groups interact with each other via subsets of individuals, namely the leaders, and natural time delay effects are considered. By using careful estimates of the system's trajectories, we are able to prove an asymptotic convergence to consensus result. Some numerical tests illustrate the theoretical result and point out some possible applications.
