Abstract:This paper describes the triangular polynomial expansion nodal (TRIPEN) method used to solve the neutron diffusion equation for prismatic reactors in AGREE. TRIPEN is a straightforward extension of previous hexagonal nodal methods using triangular polynomial expansions. Since hexagonal nodal methods are applied to regular grids, the TRIPEN nodal method treats regular triangles. The key difference of TRIPEN versus the other methods is the formulation of the nodal kernel for a single triangle, rather than a single hexagon. This facilitates the explicit treatment of intra-hexagonal cross sections on the triangles consistently with the nodal expansion, and the use of discontinuity factors on triangular surfaces interior to a hexagon. The motivation for doing so is advanced reactor core designs that may have significant material or flux heterogeneities within a hexagon. For the TRIPEN method, we conduct some performance analysis to inform our choice of certain implementation details. Several verification problems encompassing VVER and high temperature gas reactor types are performed. TRIPEN is demonstrated to perform comparably to existing hexagonal nodal methods for hexagonal problems, but significantly better for more challenging core designs exhibiting more complexity and heterogeneity. Finally, we also perform numerical studies on a 7-hex mini-VHTR problem that shows TRIPEN significantly outperforms TPEN (triangle-based polynomial expansion nodal method) when there are substantial heterogeneities and flux gradients within a hexagonal block, that necessitates the use of TRIPEN or something equivalent.
