Abstract:Purpose: This study explored the underlying process faith community nurses (FCNs) experience in developing their spiritual nursing practice. Design: A qualitative, exploratory design was used. Method: Data from interviews with six FCNs were generated and analyzed using Glaserian grounded theory. Findings: The basic social psychological process, cultivating the soul to become a channel of God, explains the steps these nurses take to achieve stages of presence. Going through these stages of presence, FCNs develop a foundation of God-related beliefs and values, presence with self, presence with God, presence with others, presence with God and others, and become a channel of God. Conclusions: Developing spiritual care competence in assessing and meeting clients’ spiritual needs is necessary to enhance person-centered practice, a vital aspect of holistic care. The model of presence can inform the development of spiritual care competencies and link to other nursing theories including Watson’s theory of caring and Benner’s novice to expert theory. Workplace support is needed for nurses to refine spiritual nursing care practices and integrate spiritual care into practice. Further research regarding the stages of presence could foster deeper understanding of how foundations of God-related values develop.

The authors, who are nursing faculty members and leaders at a faith-based institution of higher education, discuss their concept of wisdom and how it guides their teaching and practice. Wisdom is seen by them as a universal humanuniverse living experience that is inspired and cocreated with their faith and understanding of God with others. They apply the concept of wisdom in global service experiences that their institution supports. These experiences strengthen their inherent core whatness as they cocreate what is important in the moment while participating in teaching-learning.

Abstract:The integration of religion and spirituality into social work education and practice remains a contentious topic of debate. For Christian social workers, social work students and educators, integrating theories of faith and faith experiences into the educational process can be beneficial. To date there has been little evidence on how teaching spirituality and religion content in accredited programs is enhancing practice. This article presents a conceptual roadmap for instructors and students preparing to enter field practicum. By aligning Fowler's Stages of Faith with students' anticipatory process, instructors can be better equipped to navigate each stage of development.

Abstract:Global migration significantly impacts demographic patterns in the United States, intensifying the need for nurses to deliver culturally competent healthcare to refugees, immigrants, and migrants. By integrating global service-learning (GSL) into nursing curricula, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of GSL benefits in fostering effective intercultural communication, cultural humility, spiritual growth, and global health knowledge among nursing students. The findings suggest that GSL enhances the educational experience and equips nurses with the skills necessary to address the complex needs of a diverse patient population.
In Our Own Words: Baccalaureate Nursing Students Describe Academic Service Learning Experiences

Abstract:Introduction: Service learning integrates community service, didactic and student self-reflection while at the same time striving to identify and meet needs of the community partnership agencies involved. Project Descriptions. In this manuscript, two baccalaureate nursing students describe their service learning experiences while embedded in an integrated primary care community partner site for two years. In project one, students designed and conducted an educational group for mental health clients in a rural day treatment program. In project two, the student revised a diabetic clinic educational form to reduce client burden.Project management and outcomes: Projects were designed in collaboration with community partners and faculty. Project one resulted in increased knowledge of coping mechanisms in a majority of group participants. Three months after implementation of the revised form designed in project two, a majority of diabetic clients served in the clinic had A1c reductions. Discussion: Lessons learned by students during the experiences include communication skills such as developing rapport with specific client groups, steps of change management, professional team interactions and increased civic engagement. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first manuscript wherein baccalaureate nursing students add their voice to the literature describing the benefits of academic service learning. Our next step is an online follow up 9 months post-graduation, to examine whether benefits and skills are maintained.

Issues in Mental Health Nursing

Abstract:The provision of nursing care has shifted toward integrated primary care (provision of community health services by an interprofessional team), requiring that nurse educators take steps to ensure students have opportunities to learn and practice the leadership and professional skills required to function as members and leaders of interdisciplinary teams. We developed the Transforming RN Roles in Community Based Integrated Primary Care (TRIP) program for undergraduate nursing students to facilitate this learning. During clinical immersion, students participated in academic service learning (ASL) activities consisting of a minimum of 25 h of clinical agency service each semester. This descriptive qualitative design captures recurring themes in the ASL reflections of eight nursing students participating in the inaugural TRIP cohort. Three themes were identified (1) "Embracing the Nursing Profession" (2) "Utilizing the Professional Skills of Nursing" and (3) "I Am A Nurse". We urge our faculty colleagues to consider incorporating ASL experiences into their undergraduate activities. We believe the effort to initiate, develop and sustain these partnerships will pay handsome dividends in terms skill and confidence enhancements for our undergraduate nursing students.

Abstract:Objectives: Despite nursing students' need for cultural education, few studies have measured what students expect from international service-learning experiences and how their perceptions of the actual experience compare to these expectations. To increase understanding of global nursing experiences, the purpose of this study was to examine the similarities and differences between nursing students' anticipated (pre-travel) personal and professional developmental expectations and reported (posttravel) personal and developmental outcomes. Design: This study employed a mixed descriptive research design. Quantitative data was secured through survey methodology. Written responses to open-ended questions provided qualitative data for analysis. Sample: Between 2012 and 2017, 43 undergraduate and graduate nursing students at a Midwestern university completed surveys and narratives about their participation in an international service-learning course in Kenya. Results: Students' anticipated learning was achieved through their international experiences. Participants also experienced personal growth, professional development, cultural competency enhancement, and transformation from the educational experience. They also described how their experiences would change their personal and professional lives. Conclusion: The depth and breadth of the growth and learning described by students is consistent with the expectations of high-impact educational practices.
Nursing undergraduates' experience of participating in the Internet + Nursing Program and their spiritual education needs: A qualitative study from the perspective of the Neuman System Model

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to explore the qualitative aspects of nursing undergraduates' experience of participating in the Internet + nursing program and their spiritual education needs from the perspective of the Neuman system model. Methods: Using a descriptive qualitative study design, twelve full-time undergraduates at Chengde Medical University from June to July 2022 who had completed their clinical internship were interviewed one-on-one, and a purposive sampling method was adopted. Moreover, Colaizzi's phenomenological method was employed to analyze the data and improve the themes. Results: In the Internet + nursing program, the lack of spiritual education for undergraduates can be summarized into the following four themes: lack of spiritual consciousness; lack of spiritual education and spiritual nursing knowledge; high demand for spiritual education; and cognition of the current situation of basic nursing education in China and thoughts on incorporating Internet-related technologies into future nursing education. Conclusion: At the school and hospital level, importance should be placed on the basic education of spirituality and psychological nursing, and appropriate measures should be taken to improve the knowledge level of spirituality and psychological nursing as well as the capacity of spiritual nursing, in order to ensure high-quality nursing services.
Advancing pedagogy of undergraduate nursing students' cultural awareness through internationalization webinars: A qualitative study

Abstract:In today's world, nurses increasingly care for individuals from different cultures. Because culturally sensitive care can improve patient satisfaction in care, nurses need to develop cultural competence in their practice. To develop cultural competence, one option is to build cultural awareness by exposing students to nursing practices in other cultures through online internationalization-at-home activities. However, little is known about the process of cultural awareness development through internationalization activities. Therefore, this qualitative study aimed to identify the development process of cultural awareness in nursing students, who participated in a series of internationalization-at-home activities. A total of 31 nursing students from Australia, Hong Kong, and Sweden volunteered to participate in student-led learning groups. Groups consisted of two to four students from each university, who engaged in four weekly webinars and online reflections about nursing practice based on a case scenario. Data were collected from participants' ongoing reflective journal entries, and after the webinars ended, from three focus groups. A semi-structured interview guide was used to understand how the internationalization-at-home activities impacted their cultural awareness and knowledge of nursing. Data were analyzed using interpretive description. Following four levels of thematic analysis (i.e., comprehension, synthesis, theorizing, reconceptualization), we identified four themes in the development of cultural awareness: 1) nurturing reciprocity through comparisons of nursing culture; 2) discovering common ethical values of the nursing profession; 3) developing cultural awareness in nursing ideology and practice; and 4) transforming understanding of nursing in the context of their healthcare systems. By the end of the internationalization activities, students appeared to have developed relational skills to facilitate their own inner dialogue about ethical ideals of "self" and "other" in the context of being part of the global nursing community. Future research should develop and assess teaching strategies that can further facilitate the four themes in cultural awareness development.
Lessons learned: Why study-abroad remains a critical component of nursing curriculums

Abstract:Background: Caring for an increasingly older and multicultural patient population requires nurses and APNs who are able to integrate cultural competency in meeting the needs of their patients while decreasing health care disparities. A study-abroad immersion experience is one way to instill deep learning and cultural competency. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experience of baccalaureate nursing students and APN students working together in a study-abroad, service-learning experience. Method: Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) (Smith & Osborn, 2003), we explored the lived experience of Baccalaureate and Advanced Practice Nursing Students in a service-learning, study-abroad experience in Belize. Results: Emergent themes derived from students' journal transcripts were: (1) Allowing learning to take place; (2) Practicing nursing with limited resources (3) A different take on culture; and (4) Kinship with peers. From this theme two sub themes emerged: 1) students' connection with the people and the country, and 2) students' connection with each other. Conclusion: Cultural immersion prepared students to work in Belize with different patient groups, having varied perspectives related to their health. Students learned that the core values of dignity and caring require that we, as nurses, go where the patient is-not where we want the patient to be. This is tested when students are confronted with a culture not their own.

Abstract:Across the globe, spiritual care is offered by individuals, healthcare chaplains, and humanitarian, social and related spiritual groups on account of zeal, voluntary and paid services. Sometimes, services are provided without understanding the connectivity of compassion, spiritual care, and scientific protocols. There are instances where health professionals and managers disagree with spiritual caregivers or reject spiritual services because of poor service deliveries in conflict with healthcare protocols. Against this background, this article focuses on how spiritual care services can be provided scientifically to improve service delivery. It presents leading questions to link the scientific and compassionate approach to spiritual care. These include-What is science? What is compassion? What is spiritual care? What makes compassion and spiritual care scientific? Are there tenets of compassion in religions? How are compassion, science and spiritual care linked? What are the implications of the intersections for public health and safety? Hopefully, the provided answers may improve the service delivery performance of spiritual caregivers and their collaboration with healthcare professionals, social workers, and related groups.

Bridging Bible and Biology: The Impact of Faith Integration on the Spiritual Growth of Students in Christian Higher Education

Abstract:The integration of faith and learning (IFL) is an integral part of Christian higher education. The recent years have seen a spate in published studies testifying to an intense pursuit of meaningful IFL by many institutions of Christian higher education. However, little scholarship has been devoted to explore the influence of faith integration in science and its effect on the spiritual growth of students. A private, Christian university in the Southwest United States, has integrated the Christian worldview (CWV) in at least 30% of courses in college programs. Instilling the core Christian convictions into each student’s total college life has been one of the distinctive tasks of the University. The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to understand how CWV develops in Biology and (2) how IFL affects the personal faith of students. The data was collected, over a period of three consecutive years 2016 to 2018, from students preparing for Health Care and Science careers. Using the survey design with open-ended questions, 489 participants provided responses to articulate the Christian worldview perspective of microorganisms and diseases. Findings reveal a positive impact of IFL on the personal faith of students. The results also indicate students demonstrating growth in their understanding of the biblical worldview within the context of Biology.

Abstract:Background: With a focus on building global citizens, a U.S. and Norwegian academic collaborative partnership fostered clinical learning experiences addressing cultural and health care comparisons. High-impact educational practices integrated into international clinical experiences, combined with virtual global learning classrooms, highlighted the Sustainable Development Goals. Problem: Given nursing education’s requirements, devising innovative strategies expanded global learning in brief but transformative experiences while integrating nontraveling students, especially relevant considering current pandemic-related travel restrictions. Approach: We developed an educational experience pairing U.S. students (17 in person; 64 through web conference) and Norwegian students (50 in person; 3 for web conference) in population health experiences, providing required clinical hours and a shared cultural exchange. Integration of nontraveling students in joint virtual global experiences broadened the global learning opportunity for all. Conclusion: This work offers insight into how faculty used a virtual global learning experience as a synergistic tool with traditional study abroad.

Abstract:One approach to preparing students to engage in culturally diverse health-care settings around the world is to incorporate faculty-led short-term cultural immersion programs in medically underserved nations. This reflective summary analyzes the impact of a faculty-led international health-care trip on students' global health-care experience and needed health-care services in developing countries. A content analysis of the journals of two advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) faculty members was performed to gain perspectives on a trip with undergraduate and graduate nursing students and medical students to a small city in Nicaragua. This article examines the personal and professional growth achieved, and the challenges faced, when managing acute and chronic diseases with limited resources in an unfamiliar country. Themes identified included anxieties of planning, provider versus faculty role, students in action, networking, nurturing behaviors, advocating, and mentoring self-sustainability. Faculty-led international health-care trips both add a needed service to developing countries' health-care needs and offer students the experience of health care from a global perspective.

Abstract:Relationships between faith communities and international multi-lateral organizations can be complicated. While there is potential for synergy between the two, different values often characterize the approach of each. The history of these relationships is illustrative. This review describes collaboration between the World Health Organization (WHO) and faith-based organizations (FBOs) in the implementation of primary health care, the role of spirituality in health, community responses to the HIV pandemic, and definitions of Quality of Life containing spiritual dimensions. However, important gaps persist in the appreciation and measurement of the contribution of faith communities to health assets on the part of governments and the WHO. FBOs can still draw from the nine points developed in the 1960s as a time-tested viable agenda for current and future operations.
Engaging Students in a Bilingual Service-Learning Health Promotion Project

Abstract:Introduction: This service-learning, health promotion project used Leininger's Culture Care Theory to engage Baccalaureate Nursing students in a health promotion initiative specific to Hispanic community members. Methods: Thirty-seven students examined population health data, surveyed Hispanic community members to identify health priorities, and developed a population-specific intervention on diet and risk factors for diabetes. Students created a 5-min script focused on healthy eating plans with recognition of traditional foods associated with the Hispanic culture. Students delivered the script to community members attending an annual Hispanic Heritage Festival. Results: Seventy-six percent of the 488 community participants reported increased knowledge about diabetes risk factors and healthy eating habits. Each student completed a self-reflection on how the project impacted their transcultural skills and reported increased confidence related to engagement and communication with the Hispanic community. Discussion/Significance: Incorporating community-based service-learning into the undergraduate curricula is a powerful educational approach that can enhance students' ability to provide culturally congruent nursing care.

Abstract:PURPOSE This article explores approaches to service involvement and provides direction to nurse leaders and others who wish to begin or further develop global (local and international) service or service learning projects. APPROACH We review types of service involvement, analyze service-related data from a recent survey of nearly 500 chapters of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), make recommendations to guide collaborative partnerships and to model engagement in global and local service and service learning. FINDINGS This article offers a literature review and describes results of a survey conducted by the STTI International Service Learning Task Force. Results describe the types of service currently conducted by STTI nursing members and chapters, including disaster response, service learning, and service-related responses relative to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The needs of chapter members for information about international service are explored and recommendations for promoting global service and sustainability goals for STTI chapters are examined. CONCLUSIONS Before engaging in service, volunteers should consider the types of service engagement, as well as the design of projects to include collaboration, bidirectionality, sustainability, equitable partnerships, and inclusion of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STTI supports the learning, knowledge, and professional development of nurses worldwide. International service and collaboration are key to the advancement of the nursing profession. Culturally relevant approaches to international service and service learning are essential to our global organization, as it aims to impact the health status of people globally.

Abstract:In today's changing landscape of the US health care system, it is imperative to have a health care delivery model that is patient-centered and delivered by a multidisciplinary collaborative team with an understanding of each other's roles and responsibilities as well as communicate effectively. Academic institutions must create partnerships with health systems and ambulatory care settings to provide health profession students with authentic and inclusive interprofessional learning opportunities which include practice-ready skills which are needed to enter the health care workforce. Nurses are well positioned to lead this effort and practice within interprofessional teams in health care organizations.
