Abstract:Soybean (Glycine max) is one of the most important crops worldwide. This crop is prone to diseases caused by the phytopathogenic fungi Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium oxysporum, and the lepidopteran pest Rachiplusia nu. Biological control using entomopathogenic fungi is a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides. In this study, we assessed the antifungal activity of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae against phytopathogens and the pathogenicity of B. bassiana as an endophyte against R. nu. The antagonic activity of the fungal entomopathogens was evaluated in vitro by dual culture bioassays. The feeding preference of R. nu was evaluated in a “free choice” assay under laboratory conditions. Entomopathogenic fungi inhibited the mycelial growth of the phytopathogens. The best response in all cases was observed when the antagonists were placed in the culture medium two days before the pathogens. B. bassiana was the best antagonist of F. oxysporum, while both antagonists had similar inhibitory effects on M. phaseolina growth. Additionally, B. bassiana, when grown as an endophyte, reduced insects’ food preferences and decreased soybean consumption. Findings suggest that entomopathogenic fungi can fulfill multiple roles in the ecosystem. Therefore, the simultaneous expression of both properties should be considered for their application in integrated pest management programs.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to evaluate the control effects of two entomogenous fungi - **Beauveria bassiana** (*Beauveria bassiana*) and **Metarhizium anisopliae** (*Metarhizium anisopliae*) as dual control agents against two plant - pathogenic fungi in soybean (*Glycine max*), namely **Fusarium oxysporum** (*Fusarium oxysporum*) and **Macrophomina phaseolina** (*Macrophomina phaseolina*), as well as the lepidopteran pest **Rachiplusia nu** (*Rachiplusia nu*). Specifically, the research objectives include: 1. **Assessment of antifungal activity**: Evaluate the inhibitory effects of *B. bassiana* and *M. anisopliae* on *F. oxysporum* and *M. phaseolina* through dual - culture assays. 2. **Assessment of endophyte ability**: Evaluate the control effect of *B. bassiana* as an endophyte on *R. nu*, especially its influence on insect feeding preference and soybean consumption. ### Main research contents - **Antifungal activity experiment**: - Using the dual - culture assay method, co - culture *B. bassiana* and *M. anisopliae* with *F. oxysporum* and *M. phaseolina*, and observe the inhibitory effects under different treatment conditions (simultaneous inoculation, pathogen inoculated two days in advance, and antagonist inoculated two days in advance). - Calculate the percentage of radial inhibition of pathogen mycelial growth using the following formula: \[ \text{Inhibition percentage} = \left( \frac{R_1 - R_2}{R_1} \right) \times 100 \] where \( R_1 \) is the radius of the pathogen colony in the control group and \( R_2 \) is the radius of the pathogen colony in the interaction group. - **Feeding preference experiment**: - Evaluate the feeding preference of *R. nu* larvae for *B. bassiana* - infected soybean leaves and uninfected control leaves through the "free choice method" (free choice method). - Measure the amount of the two types of leaves consumed by the larvae within 24 hours, calculate the dry weight difference, to evaluate the influence of *B. bassiana* as an endophyte on the feeding behavior of *R. nu*. ### Research background Soybean is one of the most important crops in the world. However, during its growth process, it is vulnerable to attacks by various pests and pathogens, resulting in serious economic losses. Although traditional chemical pesticides are effective, they bring problems such as environmental pollution and ecological imbalance. Therefore, it is particularly important to find more environmentally - friendly biological control methods. Entomogenous fungi, as a sustainable biological control means, have potential application value. ### Research significance By evaluating the dual control effects of *B. bassiana* and *M. anisopliae* on pathogens and pests, this study provides new ideas and methods for integrated pest management (IPM). This not only helps to reduce the use of chemical pesticides but also improves the sustainability of agricultural production.
