Abstract:The sustainable utilization of biochar produced from biomass waste could substantially promote the development of carbon neutrality and a circular economy. Due to their cost-effectiveness, multiple functionalities, tailorable porous structure, and thermal stability, biochar-based catalysts play a vital role in sustainable biorefineries and environmental protection, contributing to a positive, planet-level impact. This review provides an overview of emerging synthesis routes for multifunctional biochar-based catalysts. It discusses recent advances in biorefinery and pollutant degradation in air, soil, and water, providing deeper and more comprehensive information of the catalysts, such as physicochemical properties and surface chemistry. The catalytic performance and deactivation mechanisms under different catalytic systems were critically reviewed, providing new insights into developing efficient and practical biochar-based catalysts for large-scale use in various applications. Machine learning (ML)-based predictions and inverse design have addressed the innovation of biochar-based catalysts with high-performance applications, as ML efficiently predicts the properties and performance of biochar, interprets the underlying mechanisms and complicated relationships, and guides biochar synthesis. Finally, environmental benefit and economic feasibility assessments are proposed for science-based guidelines for industries and policymakers. With concerted effort, upgrading biomass waste into high-performance catalysts for biorefinery and environmental protection could reduce environmental pollution, increase energy safety, and achieve sustainable biomass management, all of which are beneficial for attaining several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract:This review addresses the use of biochar as a green and versatile catalyst support for emerging high-end applications beyond soil remediation, including chemical synthesis and biodiesel production from biomass, and pollutant degradation in the environment. Their catalytic performances are comparable or even superior to the conventional resin-, silica-, or carbon-based catalysts, owing to the favourable intrinsic features of biochar (various functional groups, intricate network of structures, etc.). Yet, distinctive active sites are needed for different applications. It is highlighted that the active site accessibility for substrates critically determines the performance, which is associated with the biochar physicochemical characteristics (-SO3H site density, pore size distribution, surface area, etc.). They show varying significance depending on the catalytic sites on biochar, which may be controlled via novel pre-/post-synthesis modifications. This review elucidates the links among catalytic performances, physicochemical properties, and pyrolysis/modification-induced features, advising the tailored production of application-oriented biochar-based catalyst in the future.

Abstract:Lignocellulose is a key starting material for the production of biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials. This review discusses various catalytic systems, including homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic systems, for biomass valorization. Different strategies of biomass‐derived catalyst systems for value‐added chemicals are evaluated. Novel strategies for using biomass‐derived carbon‐based catalysts are proposed as a potential way to make the valorization process economically viable. Abstract:The conversion of biomass to functional hydrochar based catalysts for sustainable biorefinery application is critical but still challenging. In this study, mild hydrothermal treatment combined with limited oxygen calcination was developed to treat corn stover and model components for directional preparation of hydrochar based catalysts. The prepared catalysts with various Al active species, exhibited high specific surface area, hierarchical pores, cross-linked carbon microspheres, and excellent catalytic and recycling performances for glucose isomerization. After optimization, a fructose yield of 35.1% (selectivity 77.4%) was obtained at 160 degrees C for 20 min and it was still more than 25% after the fourth recycling. The reaction kinetics for glucose isomerization was studied. This study established the physicochemical properties performance relationships of hydrochar based catalysts. The optimized hydrothermal and calcination steps were crucial to improving performance by regulating the active sites and catalyst structures. Moreover, nitrogen, silicon and other elements coupled together could form functional compounds, which is vital for improving the catalytic performance by the synergy between support and Al active center. Three components in corn stover played distinct roles in the catalysis step. This study provides a novel way for developing efficient and recyclable catalysts from biomass, which could be applied in biorefining. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenation of biomass feedstocks into clean fuels and chemicals by heterogeneous catalysis is one of the most important means to realize the utilization of biomass, which has a promising application prospect. This review summarizes the recent advances in the preparation of metal/biochar catalysts and the commonness and individuality of catalytic performance for hydrogenation of biomass via noble metal-based catalyst, non-noble metal-based catalyst and bimetallic catalyst, followed by a discussion of the catalytic mechanism and performance of biomass hydro-upgrading process. Specially, this work details the advantages of biochar as support (such as rich oxygen-containing functional groups, rich pore structure, long catalytic life, etc.), the specific catalytic mode of each active site on the metal/biochar catalyst during the hydro-upgrading process, and the interaction mode between the biochar and the metal. Furthermore, more attention is proposed to the fine control of the structure of the metal/biochar catalysts.

Abstract:In the last few decades, the production of value-added chemicals from biomass has become a key research focus. Biomass gasification into syngas and further for methane, methanol, and C2+ alcohols production has already proved to be promising for utilization of renewable energy. Therefore, heterogeneous catalyst design and optimization are extremely significant for solving the issues of tar formation during biomass gasification. Apart from alkali metals, natural minerals, and synthetic catalysts, char and char supported catalysts prepared from residual biomass or coal have been already proved to be effective for tar reforming due to their relative chemical inertness, cheap price, excellent pore structures, etc. Advantageously, bio−/coal char could be modified and/or functionalized with heteroatoms doping and metal addition to improve activity in tar reforming. In this review, we systematically discussed the preparation, modification, and application of char catalysts in the reforming of biomass tar and tar model compounds. After that, we reviewed and compared the activity of char catalysts in tar reforming, and then we gave corresponding reactions and deactivation mechanisms over char catalysts in biomass tar reforming. Finally, we proposed existed challenges and shared our perspectives regarding future needs in char catalysts design for accelerating fuel sustainability and green development.

Abstract:Abstract Biochar is a solid residual produced from the thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass via pyrolysis or gasification. It is abundantly available and has a unique structure as well as multiple functionalities. This makes biochar a potential candidate for use as a catalyst or support in catalytic reactions relating to biomass conversion such as catalytic pyrolysis, gasification, esterification of bio-oil, tar reforming, hydrothermal treatments and upgrading of bio-oil. Although numerous studies have been conducted on the potential use of biochar in various catalysis reactions, information on the overall overview and evaluation of the feasibilities of its use, especially in biomass-related conversions, is still limited. This study reviews the state-of-the-art for the production of biochar catalyst as well as its application as a catalyst or support for catalysts in producing biofuel or syngas from biomass. Special attention is given to the reaction pathway of reactants over the surface of biochar and the potential application of biochar in commercial applications. The prospects and challenges for the application of biochar as catalysts for the thermal conversion of biomass are also proposed.

Abstract:Producing chemicals and energy from renewable biomass is critical in tackling the energy crisis. As a by-product of biomass conversion, biochar with its low price, extensive sources, has attracted much attention in fields such as environment, agriculture, materials, energy, and so on. However, many studies of biochar have been focused on its application in the environmental remediation field, little attention has been put on biochar as catalyst or catalyst support.Nevertheless, biochar has a promising application as a carbon-based catalyst and catalyst support due to its huge specific surface area (SSA), rich functional groups, and complex network structure. Besides, the introduction of biochar as catalysts favorably increases the economic benefits of biomass conversion processes.This review focuses on the biochar synthesis from agricultural and forestry waste as carbon-based catalysts and catalyst support, and their applications, especially in biorefinery. By reviewing the formation mechanism, catalytic mechanism, synthesis conditions, modification of biochar catalyst or catalyst support, and its applications, we aim to offer instructions for producing application-oriented biochar catalysts and catalyst supports for thermochemical reactions in biorefinery.

Abstract:Biochar (BC) is a material synthesized from biomass by thermochemical conversion. Physicochemical and functional properties of BCs can be enhanced by several methods of activation or functionalization. The activated and functionalized BCs with a large surface area and abundant surface functional groups can serve as effective catalysts or catalyst supports for various chemical transformations as well as for adsorption/sorption/enrichment of low‐concentration pollutant streams. Among them, remediation of environmental contaminants and production of a range of bioproducts in biorefineries have attracted much attention in the context of achieving green and sustainable development. Although the applications of BC as adsorbents in removal of pollutants have been discussed extensively, there is a lot of untapped potential with new applications of BCs as catalysts or catalyst supports for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and sustainable biorefineries. In this review, the production and activation/functionalization of BCs are scrutinized. The mechanisms of activated and functionalized BC and BC‐supported catalysts in degradation of organic contaminants via AOPs assisted with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peroxydisulfate (PDS), and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) are reviewed. Emerging applications of BC as catalyst for production of biodiesel and high‐value chemicals, tar removal, bio‐syngas reforming, and energy storage and conversion devices are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Biomass is one of the most promising renewable resources, and biomass energy is also recognized as the zero-carbon emission energy. Over the past decade, thermochemical conversion technologies have been well developed to convert different types of biomass feedstocks into solid biochar, liquid fuels, and gas, in which catalysts are commonly applied. This review summarizes the types of catalysts used in three common thermochemical conversion pathways (pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction and gasification), while focusing on the most recent progress in the applications of catalysts in these processes. The catalytic reaction mechanisms, catalysts deactivation and regeneration, industrial utilization, as well as the challenges and knowledge gaps for applications of catalyst in these processes are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:Firstly, this paper reviews two main methods for biochar synthesis, namely conventional pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). The related processes are described, and the influences of biomass nature and reaction conditions, especially temperature, are discussed. Compared to pyrolysis, HTC has advantages for processing high-moisture biomass and producing spherical biochar particles. Secondly, typical features of biochar in comparison with other carbonaceous materials are summarized. They refer to the presence of inorganics, surface functional groups, and local crystalline structures made up of highly conjugated aromatic sheets. Thirdly, various strategies for biochar modification are illustrated. They include activation, surface functionalization, in situ heteroatom doping, and the formation of composites with other materials. An appropriate modification is necessary for biochar used as a catalyst. Fourthly, the applications of biochar-based catalysts in three important processes of biofuel production are reviewed. Sulfonated biochar shows good catalytic performance for biomass hydrolysis and biodiesel production. Biodiesel production can also be catalyzed by biochar-derived or -supported solid-alkali catalysts. Biochar alone and biochar-supported metals are potential catalysts for tar reduction during or after biomass gasification. Lastly, the merits of biochar-based catalysts are summarized. Biochar-based catalysts have great developmental prospects. Future work needs to focus on the study of mechanism and process design.

Abstract:This chapter introduces the basic theory and technologies of biochar production, biochar activation and upgrading, and biochar application as a promising catalyst. The routes of biochar production including conventional pyrolysis, gasification, microwave assisted pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization are described in detail. The yield and properties of biochar, such as high heating value, pH value and BET surface area and pore structure, and also the graphitization degree, are significantly affected by operating conditions, temperature, heating rate, solid residence time, particle size, etc. To enhance the pore volume, control the pore diameter, and improve the surface area of primary biochar, physical activation, chemical activation, and the physicochemical activation are the main technologies. After activation, biochar has a relatively high surface area and pore volume possessing a multi-level porous structure with both micropores and mesopores. And the functional groups on the surface of biochar facilitate its surface chemistry modification. Because of all of these properties, biochar has a great potential for application as a catalyst and catalyst support. The catalyst applications summarized in this chapter include the direct application of biochar as a catalyst for biomass thermoconversion and tar removal, heterogeneous catalyst support for hydrocarbons production, solid acid catalyst for biodiesel production, electrochemical catalyst and photocatalyst.

Abstract:Biochar has emerged as a new class of biomass-derived functional materials that can be obtained using a plethora of thermochemical conversion techniques. Biochar-based environmental catalysts have potential applications toward a positive, planet-level impact. Here, recent observations in the activated conversions of emerging contaminants are reviewed, highlighting the most influential advancements, including metal-free processes. The status quo of the underlying interaction mechanisms are summarized, revealing the active functional moieties, persistent free radicals, graphitic degree and electron transfer capacity collectively and synergistically regulate the catalytic potency. These remarkable features convey biochar's high activity and flexibility into viable chemo-redox, photo-, bio-, sono-, and electrocatalysis. Advanced coupling processes and some perspectives on future possibilities are proposed at the end.

Abstract:As a carbon-rich material produced by pyrolysis of biomass, biochar features low cost, large specific surface area, and widely available feedstocks based on the functional diversity and environmental-friendly properties, it has received increasing attention in the fields of pollutant removal due to three win–win effects of water remediation, carbon sequestration and reutilization of wastes. To design excellent biochar-based catalysts for environmental applications, one must understand recent advances in the catalysts for contaminant removal. This review focuses on the current application of biochar-based catalysts in redox systems, Fenton-like systems, sonocatalytic systems and photocatalytic systems. Besides in-depth discussion in effects of preparation conditions on physicochemical characteristics of biochars, the review supplements new preparation technologies of biochar and biochar-based catalysts. Most importantly, the advantages/shortcomings, catalysis mechanisms, as well as the pollutant removal ability of different types of biochar-based catalysts are discussed. The environmental risks of the catalyst applications are also elaborated on. Future research on biochar-based catalyst production and its environmental applications is discussed. The review provides a good overview of the current advances of biochar-based catalysts in pollutant control and the futureresearch directions.

Abstract:Biomass thermochemical processes result in a common byproduct char. The char is also called biochar particularly when it is used as a soil amendment for soil health improvement. Effective utilization of biochar is critical for improving economic viability and environmental sustainability of biomass thermochemical technologies. Application of biochar for both agricultural and environmental benefits has been studied and reviewed extensively. However, there are limited reviews on other biochar applications, such as for catalysis and adsorption. This paper provides an overview of recent advances in several biochar utilizations including its use as catalyst, soil amendment, fuel cell, contaminant adsorbent, gas storage and activated carbon. Discussions on biochar production methods, properties and advanced characterization techniques are also provided. Biochar is a valuable resource, however, its effective utilization require further investigation of its structure and properties, and methods to modify those.

Abstract:Biomass, as a very important renewable resource, its efficient conversion was an important way to achieve zero CO 2 emissions, provide clean and renewable energy, and promote the resource utilization of agricultural waste. Biomass pyrolysis, as a technology that could simultaneously obtain high value-added energy and chemical products such as biochar, bio-oil, and combustible gas, had received widespread attention, in which the role of catalysts in biomass pyrolysis had also been widely studied. In this thesis, the application of catalysts in biomass pyrolysis was reviewed in detail on the basis of introducing the principle and pyrolysis methods of biomass pyrolysis, and found that catalysts could effectively improve the distribution and properties of pyrolysis products, especially for the reforming of bio-oil and bio-gas, which had shown outstanding performance in green energy and functional chemicals. At the same time, the current problems of catalysts in biomass pyrolysis were analyzed, and new thoughts were proposed for future research on biomass catalytic pyrolysis, with a view to providing new ways for efficient catalytic pyrolysis and green sustainable development of biomass.

Abstract:Under the circumstances of serious environmental challenges and energy crises, it is of utmost importance to produce fuels and chemicals from renewable biomass and organic wastes. Biochar as a bioproduct from thermochemical conversion of biomass has attracted exponential research interest in recent years due to the abundance of its precursor (biomass resources) and its adaptability in different chemical reaction systems. Undoubtedly, it is essential to attain an in-depth understanding of the physiochemical properties and functionalization of biochar catalysts to further improve their catalytic activity, selectivity and stability in the reactions. However, until now, only a few reports are accessible on the use of biochar as a catalytic support material and/or a standalone catalyst in thermochemical biomass conversion to produce high-quality biofuels. Thus, the key objective of this review article is to summarize and discuss the latest progress in biochar production, modification, activation and functionalization by understanding its physical chemistry, composition and application in catalytic processes. Abstract:The production of fuels and chemicals from renewable lignocellulosic biomass resources has been a major research focus in the last few decades. The most efficient method for synthesizing value-added chemical products from sustainable feedstocks is direct catalytic conversion, however, the multifunctional and highly oxygenated biomass-derived substrates are significantly different from petroleum-based feedstocks. Thus, systematic development of new catalytic materials is required to take advantage of the only substantial source of renewable carbon. In this review, we discuss the foundational methodologies that enable rational catalyst design through the investigation of surface-adsorbate interactions and the elucidation of descriptors for selectivity control. Molecular spectroscopies, efficient and predictive computational modeling, rigorous kinetic investigations, and highly controlled materials synthesis have generated fundamental insights leading to general catalyst design principles in biomass upgrading processes. The application of each technique in biomass research is discussed in the context of several case studies, with a focus on the unique insights available from each technique. Moreover, the interplay among multiple techniques, particularly between experimental and computational methods, is also highlighted. Despite the impressive progress made in the biomass field, major roadblocks still exist due to the complexity in the composition and structure of both substrates and catalysts. We share our perspectives regarding future needs in selective catalytic conversions of multifunctional substrates and methods for accelerating catalyst development.
