Abstract:In cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), intraocular tamponade after air-fluid exchange at the end of pars plana vitrectomies (PPV) serves as a barrier preventing fluid tracking through retinal breaks until chorioretinal adhesion is established. The choice of tamponade includes inert expensile gas, filtered air (FA) and silicone oil (SO), which depends on the extent of detachment and whether the case is complicated with severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), giant retinal tears and trauma.
