Abstract:The identification of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is crucial in investigating and applying optical vortices (OVs). Here, we propose a novel diffraction device, a binaural circular aperture (BCA), to detect the OAM modes of OVs. The BCA is well designed and composed of a lemniscate and two semicircles. We first investigate the intensity distribution of the OVs passing through the BCA theoretically. The OVs with different OAM modes will produce different diffraction patterns, and the modes can be directly identified from the diffraction fringes. Building this BCA with an amplitude spatial light modulator, the OAM modes ranging from -6 to +6 are experimentally identified, and the results are well consistent with the simulation. When the BCA is resized in the millimetre level, the influence on the identification of OAM modes is very limited. These results show that the BCA we proposed can provide a feasible and effective way to rapidly identify the OAM modes of OVs, and shows its insensitivity to the dimensional deviation.

Abstract:A novel radar imaging technique based on orbital angular momentum (OAM) modulation is presented. First, the generation of electromagnetic (EM) vortex wave, which carries the OAM, using incrementally phased uniform circular array (UCA) is introduced, and factors that affect the phase-front distribution are analyzed. Subsequently, echo signal models of both multiple-in-multiple-out and multiple-in-single-out modes are established. The target images are obtained using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and back-projection methods. Simulation results demonstrate that orbital angular momentum has the prospect for acquiring the azimuth information of radar target. The signal of both OAM modulation and frequency modulation can be used to obtain two-dimensional radar target image. The work can benefit the development of novel information-rich radar based on orbital angular momentum, as well as radar target recognition.

Abstract:Vortex electromagnetic (EM) wave carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been exploited in radar imaging realms in recent years. However, the radiation energy pattern caused by the Bessel amplitude modulation limits the OAM-based applications in the long distance. To solve the radiation energy divergence problem in radar realms, the imaging method based on waveform diversity (WD) and rotational array is developed in this article. The energy hollow along the beam axis is avoided by the orthogonal waveform design during the radar illumination process. Then, the echo demodulation approach is proposed, and the corresponding imaging model is established. Furthermore, a highly efficient imaging scheme based on rotational array is designed, where the OAM multiplexing approach is proposed and large OAM index can be used for imaging by virtual synthesis. Both simulation results and experimental results in an anechoic chamber are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness. This work can promote the application of OAM technology in realistic scenarios.

Abstract:A super-resolution imaging technique based on the vortex electromagnetic (EM) wave, which carries orbital angular momentum (OAM), is reported in this paper. The proof-of-concept experiment for the EM vortex imaging is conducted. An imaging processing method based on the real-world OAM radar data is proposed to obtain the target profile. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed imaging method and demonstrate that the vortex EM wave can be exploited to image targets with high-resolution beyond the limit of the array aperture. This breakthrough on the Rayleigh limit paves the way for innovative techniques in radar imaging and remote sensing.

Abstract:The donut-shaped radiation energy pattern of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams has been a longstanding challenge in electromagnetic (EM) vortex imaging. In this article, an effective EM vortex imaging scheme is developed based on the orthogonal polyphase-coded OAM multiplexing beam with mitigated beam energy divergence. Firstly, vortex EM waves are modulated with different orthogonal polyphase codes and transmitted simultaneously to illuminate the imaging scenario. The codes change the phase relationship between different transmitted signals, leading to a convergent energy distribution around the beam axis. Then, an OAM demultiplexing method is proposed to separate the radar echo of each OAM mode, which maintains the individual spiral phase fronts at the same time. Finally, the 2-D fast Fourier transform (FFT) is applied to the demodulated signals to reconstruct the target image. Simulation results show that the proposed imaging method has a higher azimuth resolution than the traditional method with small elevation angles and performs much better in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environments. Furthermore, an experiment in an anechoic chamber validates the potential of the proposed method. This work can benefit the practical applications of OAM imaging technology.

Abstract:Vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are extensively studied owing to its potential to expand channel capacity of microwave and optical communication. By utilizing the Pancharatnam-Berry phase concept, an ultrawideband single-layer metasurface is proposed to realize the conversion from incident plane waves to reflected vortex beams covering a considerable bandwidth from 6.75 to 21.85 GHz (>105%). An equivalent circuit model combined with broadband phase shift network is developed to effectively design the meta-atoms in metasurface. It is the first time to design wideband metasurfaces with the phase-based characteristics. To verify the proposed model, some deformed square loop meta-atoms are proposed to construct the metasurfaces with broadband OAM characteristic. Moreover, the vortex beams with the integer (l = -3), fractional (l = -1.5), and high-order (l = -10) OAM mode are generated. Based on an OAM spectral analysis, the mode purity of the generated vortex waves is discussed in detail. The experimental results achieve a good agreement with those obtained from the simulation, thus proving the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method.

Abstract:The vortex electromagnetic (EM) wave carring orbital angular momentum (OAM) that exhibits the phase distribution of the helical wave front. It is expected to provide a new dimension of the physical parameters for the multiplexing and manipulating EM wave, and bring a new opportunity to the traditional EMs. However, there are many obstacles in the practical applications in radio domain. We excavate out that the vorticity and orthogonality are the two essential characteristics of the vortex waves. Based on this, it is proposed to use vortex wave mode group to modify spatial structure and form structured EM beams. This kind of beams not only retain the inherent vorticity and orthogonality of the traditional OAM wave, but also avoid the inherent defects in the applications of the traditional vortex EM waves. In this chapter, the construction and manipulation of the OAM-based structured radio beams are investigated. The vorticity and orthogonality of this kind of structured radio beams are analyzed. Several antennas for the structured radio beams are designed, and the potential applications in the radar detection and wireless communications are envisioned.

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) vortex can realize high resolution imaging in forward-looking observation geometry without relative motion between the radar system and targets. However, the current research about EM vortex imaging only exploits integral orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams, which limit the application in the real scene with the existence of noise. An EM vortex enhanced imaging method based on fractional OAM beams is proposed against noise effect in this letter. Firstl the generation method of fractional OAM beams with phase distribution of nonintegral OAM mode is proposed using uniform circular array, and the corresponding features are analyzed. Subsequently, the imaging model and scheme with fractional OAM beams are provided and the principle for enhancing imaging performance is derived. Finally, results by Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the proposed vortex imaging method based on fractional OAM beams is robust against noise effect and can achieve better imaging performance in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environment, which is of prospect for overcoming the shortage of poor imaging performance in low OAM order and complex noise scenario. This letter benefits the development of EM vortex imaging.

Abstract:The electromagnetic beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has a twisted phase front, which can induce a rotational Doppler frequency shift when it is illuminating on a spinning object. In this paper, the rotational Doppler effect induced by a radio wave carrying OAM is theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified. Compared with an optical vortex beam, the divergence angle of a radio wave carrying OAM is typically larger than that of an optical vortex beam, which results in the radio OAM-based sensing system with short-range detection distance. In this case, the receiver's location and the deflection of the rotating plane are important factors that affect the radio rotational Doppler effect. For an off-axis receiver or a deflected spinning object, a series of extra Doppler frequency shifts (L ± N)Ω/2π are induced when the spinning object is illuminated by a wave carrying OAM with topological charge L, even for L = 0, the plane wave. Hence, the high order OAM wave should be used to distinguish the real rotational frequency shift and improve detection sensitivity of spinning velocity. Combining the rotational Doppler effect with the linear Doppler effect, a vector velocity detecting scheme is discussed.

Abstract:Detection of the rotational objects in arbitrary position, using vortex electromagnetic (EM) waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), is studied in this paper. In addition to the traditional linear Doppler shift, the rotational Doppler shift in OAM-based radar system can provide more detailed features of the object. Firstly, the Doppler detection model in OAM-based radar system is established, the linear Doppler and rotational Doppler frequency shifts are derived and verified. Subsequently, the detection method of rotational object using vortex EM waves, including an effective linear and rotational Doppler separation and a motion parameter estimation method, is proposed. Theoretical and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and more detailed rotational parameters can be obtained by using vortex EM waves in OAM-based radar system, compared to the method using plane waves in conventional radar system.

Abstract:The vortex electromagnetic (EM) wave carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) has shown significant potential in high-resolution radar imaging. However, the Bessel function modulation (BFM) effect caused by the vortex wave’s physical nature influences the imaging performance, especially under the limited OAM modes. To address this issue, we first establish a computationally efficient 2-D vortex radar imaging model and analyze the influence of the BFM effect on vortex radar imaging from the point spread function (PSF). Then, we propose a novel EM vortex radar imaging algorithm based on joint low-rank and sparse constrained representation. Specifically, the vortex radar echo data exhibits the inherent low-rank property, and hence a low-rank regularization term is introduced to remove the BFM effect. Moreover, a constraint corresponding to the image sparsity is adopted to eliminate the interference caused by the limited OAM modes. Hence, the high-resolution vortex radar imaging problem is modeled as a double-constrained underdetermined optimization problem. An iterative algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework is further designed to solve the problem with high efficiency. Experimental results based on synthetic, EM, and measured data validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:For the electromagnetic (EM) vortex imaging purposes, the sidelobe suppression and the beam collimation method in the generation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams is proposed. Based on the concentric ring array, the objective function for the generic algorithm is defined to calculate the signal amplitude for each ring. Comprehensive simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results show that the main lobes of the radiation pattern of different OAM modes are collimated in the same direction and the sidelobes are all lower than -20 dB. Furthermore, the imaging model of the concentricring array is established, and the target image is obtained through numerical simulations. The work can advance the development of the EM vortex imaging technique and novel radar detection technology as well.

Abstract:The electromagnetic (EM) vortex imaging has demonstrated superior performance in target detection and imaging with azimuthal super-resolution. However, the restricted elevation resolution degrades the acquisition of target spatial information, which limits the development of the radar imaging technology based on orbital angular momentum (OAM). This article offers a solution to achieve the 3-D EM vortex imaging, by effectively utilizing relative motion between radar and target in the line-of-sight (LOS) direction. First, the forward-looking radar imaging scenario is presented, the 3-D echo model is derived, and the characteristics are analyzed as well. Second, the imaging method, based on the back-projection (BP) and spectrum estimation method, is proposed to obtain the target's 3-D focused image. Furthermore, the influence factors about the elevation resolution are analyzed by the point spread function (PSF). Finally, simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical analyses.

Abstract:The orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam has shown great prospects of radar applications, due to the OAM diversity characteristics. However, the radiation energy convergence is still a hard problem to be solved for radar target imaging in realistic scenario. In this paper, a novel OAM beam generation method is developed based on the uniform circular array (UCA) and phase coded waveform, which can collimate the beams with different OAM modes. Furthermore, the echo demodulation and the imaging methods are proposed to reconstruct the target profiles in the range and azimuth domain. Simulation results validate that the OAM -based radar imaging can achieve higher azimuth resolution than the conventional real aperture imaging. This work can advance the development of vortex wave radar technology and radar system.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM), which was first discovered in the optical field, represents a new dimension of electromagnetic waves. However, the detection of OAM microwave photons, i.e., vortex microwave photons, at room temperature is difficult due to their low energy. Here we report a prototype of a vortex microwave photon detection device based on vortex electrons. Our OAM detection device efficiently distinguishes the intrinsic OAM in the microwave band, which is helpful for exploring new physical dimensions. In addition, the detection device can be enhanced with a vortex electron sorting device designed with electron holograms so that OAM microwave photon demultiplexing can be achieved. Finally, the OAM detection device has high practicability; i.e., not only it can be used at room temperature, but also it is much smaller than a particle accelerator system. To illustrate the significance of this method, we demonstrate an on-off keying transmission system based on our OAM detection device.

Abstract:Vortex electromagnetic (EM) waves, with different orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, have the ability to distinguish the azimuth of radar targets, and then the two-dimensional reconstruction of the targets can be achieved. However, the vortex EM wave imaging methods in published research have no ability to obtain the elevation of the targets, and thus, the three-dimensional spatial structure and richer feature information of the radar target cannot be obtained. Therefore, a three-dimensional imaging method of vortex EM waves with integer- and fractional-order OAM modes is proposed in this paper, which can realize a three-dimensional reconstruction of a radar target based on a uniform circular array (UCA) with two-step imaging. First, the vortex EM wave with integer- and fractional-order OAM modes is generated, and the echo model with different OAM mode types is established. Thereafter, the echo with integer order is processed to obtain the range-azimuth image by fast Fourier transform (FFT). Then, in order to realize the three-dimensional reconstruction, the echo with fractional order is processed by utilizing the butterfly operation and analyzing the characteristics of the fractional Bessel function. Moreover, the resolution and reconstruction precision of the azimuth and elevation are analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation experiments.

Abstract:The rotational Doppler effect based on the radio orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying wave has been theoretically studied and experimentally verified at 10 GHz. By using the higher-order OAM mode L=2 and L=3 as the incident wave, the rotational Doppler frequency shift and the inevitable micro-Doppler frequency shift are successfully distinguished. Since the wave vector of radio OAM wave includes both the radial component and azimuthal component, which are related to linear Doppler frequency shift along the radial direction and rotational Doppler frequency shift, respectively, it has potential applications in 2D vector velocity detection.
