Abstract:Based on the first-principles theory combining density-functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function, A zigzag-armchair-zigzag (Z-A-Z) graphene nanoribbon transistor model was constructed using the quantumATK tool, and Stone-Wales (SW) defects were introduced. The transmission spectrum, electrical conductivity, gate potential and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of Z-A-Z graphene nanoribbons were analyzed. By constructing Z-A-Z graphene nanoribbons with SW defects, the effect of defects on their transport properties was explored. The research results can provide a reference for the research on the characteristics of Z-A-Z graphene nanoribbons.

Abstract:We explore the electronic and transport properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with nitrogen-vacancy defects by performing fully self-consistent spin-polarized density functional theory calculations combined with non-equilibrium Green's function technique. We observe robust negative differential resistance (NDR) effect in all examined molecular junctions. Through analyzing the calculated electronic structures and the bias-dependent transmission coefficients, we find that the narrow density of states of electrodes and the bias-dependent effective coupling between the central molecular orbitals and the electrode subbands are responsible for the observed NDR phenomenon. In addition, the obvious difference of the transmission spectra of two spin channels is observed in some bias ranges, which leads to the near perfect spin-filtering effect. These theoretical findings imply that GNRs with nitrogen-vacancy defects hold great potential for building molecular devices.

Abstract:We study, by density functional and large-scale tight-binding transport calculations, the electronic structure, magnetism and transport properties of the recently proposed graphene ribbons with edges rolled to form nanotubes. Edges with armchair nanotubes present magnetic moments localized either in the tube or the ribbon and of metallic or half-metallic character, depending on the symmetry of the junction. These properties have potential for spin valve and spin filter devices with advantages over other proposed systems. Edges with zigzag nanotubes are either metallic or semiconducting without affecting the intrinsic mobility of the ribbon. Varying the type and size of the nanotubes and ribbons offers the possibility to tailor the magnetic and transport properties, making these systems very promising for applications.

Abstract:We present a first-principles study of the migration and recombination of edge defects (carbon adatom and/or vacancy) and their influence on electrical conductance in zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs). It is found that at room temperature, the adatom is quite mobile while the vacancy is almost immobile along the edge of ZGNRs. The recombination of an adatom-vacancy pair leads to a pentagon-heptagon ring defect structure having a lower energy than the perfect edge, implying that such an edge defect can be formed spontaneously. This edge defect can suppresses the conductance of ZGNRs drastically, which provides some useful hints for understanding the observed semiconducting behavior of the fabricated narrow GNRs.
The Strain-Tuned Spin Seebeck Effect, Spin Polarization, and Giant Magnetoresistance of a Graphene Nanobubble in Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons

Abstract:By using first-principle calculations combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function approach, we studied the spin caloritronic properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons with a nanobubble at the edge (NB-ZGNRs). The thermal spin-polarized currents can be induced by a temperature difference, and the spin Seebeck effect is found in the nanoribbon. The spin polarization, magnetoresistance, and Seebeck coefficients are discussed, which are strongly affected and can be tuned by the geometrical strain. Moreover, some novel spin caloritronic devices are designed, such as a device that generates bidirectional perfect spin currents and thermally induced giant magnetoresistances. Our results open up the possibility of tuning the spin caloritronic properties of the NB-ZGNR-based devices by changing the elastic strain on the graphene nanobubble.

Abstract:In this study, we use a full tight -binding model to explore the behavior of graphene nanobubbles between the interface of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG-1 . 05 degrees ), uncovering the simultaneous existence of confined states and pseudo -Landau level (pLL) states under minor strain conditions. We find that the energy separation of the confined states aligns with a linear N rule, while pLL states follow a typical root N rule. As the height of the bubble and the local strain escalate, the low -energy segment of the local density of states transforms from confined states to pLL states. Our findings establish that the effect of a perpendicular magnetic field can effectively distinguish between confined and pLLs. Our results offer a crucial stepping stone towards the strain -engineering of electronic states in graphene-based nanostructures.

Abstract:Using density functional calculations combined with non-equilibrium Green’s functions, we investigate the BN co-doping effects on the electronic structure of zigzag γ-graphyne nanoribbons and spin-dependent transport properties of related transport heterojunctions. The results show that, when properly selecting the doping sites of the B and N atoms at the two edges, half-metallicity is obtained due to the opposite energy shift in the two spin channels caused by the potential generated by the BN pairs. In transport junctions constructed by connecting two ribbons by only one edge of each ribbon to form a ‘Z’-shape structure, highly spin polarized transport is achievable, depending on the relative positions of the B and N dopants in the two ribbons. Our finding opens a new possibility of graphyne in spintronic device applications.
Tuning Spin Polarization and Spin Transport of Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons by Line Defects.

Abstract:From first-principles methods, the spin-dependent electronic properties of zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) with a line defect (558-defect) are investigated systematically and compared to those of the pristine ZGNR. Results show that the line defect possesses an obvious tuning effect on the spin-polarization of the edge carbon atoms of the defective ZGNRs, and the spin-polarization and spin-transport are sensitive to the position of line defects. The defective ZGNRs can realize a transition from antiferromagnetism (AFM) to ferrimagnetism and ferromagnetism (FM) via changing the position of line defects from the center to the zigzag edge of ZGNRs. More importantly, when the line defect is located at the one edge, the defective ZGNRs exhibit the long-range magnetic ordering at edges with a high Curie temperature up to 276 K, and the defective ZGNR system can generate a high-performance spin-filter effect in the large bias range, 0.0-0.5 V. Such a sensitive modulation for the spin-polarization and spin-transport holds great promise for applications of the graphene-based systems in nano-scale spintronic devices.

Abstract:The charge transport properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) under uniaxial and shear strains are theoretically studied. Although all strained ZGNRs have similar metallic band structures, they show four types of transport behavior under bias voltages that depend on the type of strain and the mirror symmetry of the ZGNR. Under an applied uniaxial strain, the current of symmetric ZGNRs is consistently small, while for asymmetric ZGNRs it is large. In contrast, the current increases with increasing shear strain for symmetric ZGNRs while it decreases for asymmetric ZGNRs. The current properties merge when the shear strain exceeds a critical value, and the two systems then show similar behavior. Our results suggest that strained ZGNRs with an appropriate applied shear are ideal conducting wires.

Abstract:The electronic transport of zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) with local Stone-Wales (SW) defects is systematically investigated by first principles calculations. While both symmetric and asymmetric SW defects give rise to complete electron backscattering region, the well-defined parity of the wave functions in symmetric SW defects configuration is preserved. Its signs are changed for the highest-occupied electronic states, leading to the absence of the first conducting plateau. The wave function of asymmetric SW configuration is very similar to that of the pristine GNR, except for the defective regions. Unexpectedly, calculations predict that the asymmetric SW defects are more favorable to electronic transport than the symmetric defects configuration. These distinct transport behaviors are caused by the different couplings between the conducting subbands influenced by wave function alterations around the charge neutrality point.

Abstract:The intrinsic electronic and transport properties of a series of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) have been investigated systematically using density functional theory coupled with the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method. It is found that ZGNRs with various ribbon widths have completely different transport properties under bias, depending on whether the number of zigzag chains is odd or even. ZGNRs with odd number except 1-ZGNR possess small current regardless of the bias applied. In contrast, ZGNRs with even number have much larger current and behave as a resistor having a linear current-voltage relationship. The results also reveal that the narrow ZGNRs, e.g., 1-ZGNR and 2-ZGNR, have different transport behaviors, which are governed by the edge-effect and the unique electronic structure.

Abstract:Based on the recursive Green-function method together with Landauer-Büttiker formalism, we theoretically study the controllable spin-dependent electron transport properties by using zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) with triangular nanoconstrictions in the presence of the ferromagnetic strips and spatial modulation of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC). In this structure, the peaks of spin-flip and spin-conserved conductance can be modulated by the strength of RSOC and exchange magnetic field. The distribution of the local density of states (LDOS) around triangular nanoconstrictions is predicted. The spin filtering effect of ZGNRs with triangular and rectangular nanoconstrictions are compared by spin conductance from left (L) to right (R) lead and R to L lead, respectively. The results might be useful in designing a bidirectional spin converter and spin filter with the modulation of the multi-parameter.

Abstract:We investigate the magnetic transport properties for a molecular device model constructed by a carbon atomic chain embedding in two hydrogen-passivated graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) electrodes with sawtooth zigzag edges. The spin-dependent transport simulation is carried out by the first-principles approach based on the density functional theory combing with nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. It is found that the dual spin-filtering effect with the perfect efficiency up to 100%, high-performance dual-spin diode effect with the rectification ratio reaches about 2.02 x 10(8) and obvious negative differential resistance behaviour with a peak-to-valley ratio near 3.24 x 10(6) are numerically observed in such proposed molecular device. Particularly, a giant magnetoresistance ratio approaching 2.38 x 10(7)% is also observed, which is two orders magnitude higher than the value of a zigzag-edge GNR. These findings suggest that our proposed device has multifunction with highly effective spin-filter, spin-diode, spin-valve performance. [GRAPHICS] .
Nonlinear Transport through ultra-narrow Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons: non-equilibrium charge and bond currents

Abstract:The electronic nonlinear transport through ultra narrow graphene nanoribbons (sub-$10nm$) is studied. A stable region of negative differential resistance (NDR) appears in the I-V characteristic curve of {\it odd} zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) in both positive and negative polarity. This NDR originates from a transport gap inducing by a selection rule which blocks electron transition between disconnecting energy bands of ZGNR. Based on this transition rule, on/off ratio of the current increases exponentially with the ribbon length up to $10^5$. In addition, charging effects and also spatial distribution of bond currents was studied by using non-equilibrium Green's function formalism in the presence of e-e interaction at a mean field level. On the other hand, we also performed an {\it ab initio} density functional theory calculation of transmission through a passivated graphene nanoribbon to demonstrate robustness of the transport gap against hydrogen termination of the zigzag edges.

Abstract:Abstract The spin current transmission properties of narrow zigzag graphene nanoribbons (zGNRs) have been the focus of much computational research, investigating the potential application of zGNRs in spintronic devices. Doping, fuctionalization, edge modification, and external electric fields have been studied as methods for spin current control, and the performance of zGNRs initialized in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin states has been modeled. Recent work has shown that precise fabrication of narrow zGNRs is possible, and has addressed long debated questions on their magnetic order and stability. This work has revived interest in the application of antiferromagnetic zGNR configurations in spintronics. A general ab initio analysis of narrow antiferromagnetic zGNR performance under a combination of bias voltage and transverse electric field loading shows that their current transmission characteristics differ sharply from those of their ferromagnetic counterparts. At relatively modest field strengths, both majority and minority spin currents react strongly to the applied field. Analysis of band gaps and current transmission pathways explains the presence of negative differential resistance effects and the development of spatially periodic electron transport structures in these nanoribbons.

Abstract:Based on the first-principles method, the spin-dependent transport properties of covalent-organic molecular device embedded between two zigzag-edge graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) electrodes have been studied. It is revealed that in the parallel (P) spin configuration of two ZGNR electrodes, the molecular device exhibits a robust spin filtering effect (up to 100%). In another case of antiparallel (AP) spin configuration, dual spin filtering, spin rectifying as well as negative differential resistance (NDR) effects were discovered. Abstract:Electronic transport properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with two kinds of triangular defects are explored by using an ab-initio method. At a certain bias, the current of the GNR with an upward-triangle defect can be surprisingly larger than that of the perfect GNR due to the defect-induced symmetry breaking and more conductive channels. Dissimilarly, if the orientation of the triangle is changed rightward, the current is depressed much and shows negative differential resistance behavior. Our findings indicate that defect designs can be an efficient way to tune the electronic transport of GNR nanodevices.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of edge defects (vacancies) and impurities (substitutional dopants) on the robustness of spin polarization in graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with zigzag edges by using density-functional-theory calculations. The stability of the spin state and its magnetic moments is found to continuously decrease with increasing the concentration of the defects or impurities. The system generally becomes nonmagnetic at the concentration of one edge defect (impurity) per similar to 10 angstrom. The spin suppression is shown to be caused by the reduction and removal of edge states at the Fermi energy. Our analysis implies an important criterion on the GNR samples for spintronics applications.

Abstract:Zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) are used to build devices in which transport with high spin polarization is realized by first-principles simulations. At first, we dope the semiconducting ZGNRs with B atoms on both sides to obtain a metallic ribbon. Then, in one segment of this ribbon which acts as the scattering region, the B atoms at one edge are substituted by C atoms or by N atoms. It is found that such devices show very good spin filtering effect which originates from the interaction between the impurity atoms and the edge states.

Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons with perfect edges are predicted to exhibit interesting electronic and spintronic properties 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , notably quantum-confined bandgaps and magnetic edge states. However, so far, graphene nanoribbons produced by lithography have had rough edges, as well as low-temperature transport characteristics dominated by defects (mainly variable range hopping between localized states in a transport gap near the Dirac point 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ). Here, we report that one- and two-layer nanoribbon quantum dots made by unzipping carbon nanotubes 10 exhibit well-defined quantum transport phenomena, including Coulomb blockade, the Kondo effect, clear excited states up to ∼20 meV, and inelastic co-tunnelling. Together with the signatures of intrinsic quantum-confined bandgaps and high conductivities, our data indicate that the nanoribbons behave as clean quantum wires at low temperatures, and are not dominated by defects.
