Abstract:Infrastructure usability becomes limited during a heavy snowfall event. In order to prevent such limitations, damage calculations and a decision-making process are needed. Snow-removal routing is a type of relevant disaster-prevention service. While three-dimensional (3D) models support these measures, they contain complex information regarding compatibility. This study generates a city-level semantic information model for roads using CityGML, an open standard data schema, and calculates the optimal snow removal route using this model. To this end, constraint conditions are analyzed from the viewpoint of a snow-removal vehicle, and a road network for an optimal route is applied to a 3D road information model. Furthermore, this study proposes a new algorithm that reduces the number of nodes used in the optimal route calculation, and a genetic algorithm is used to find the solution of the formulated objective function. This new algorithm reduces the number of nodes to less than two-thirds that of the original numbers when determining the optimal travel route for snow-removal vehicles in the target area.

Model for Snow-fighting Vehicle Route Planning Considering Deadheading Restriction

Abstract:Snow1 removal is an important job for urban traffic authority to keep urban traffic smooth and safe, particularly for cities in cold regions. Snow-fighting vehicle routing problem, for mechanically removing measure, is an arc routing problem. However, the deadheading problem, in which vehicles may travel on a road covered by snow without serving it, is unreasonable and increasing the cost. Therefore, an optimization model is constructed to restrict the deadheading problem, which allows deadheading only after the road has been serviced. Also, a two-stage serial algorithm, which is first-clustering-then-routing, is proposed to solve the optimization model. A numerical example is conducted subsequently. Results show that the efficiency of snow removal drops as demand rises and most of the snow is removed in the front of the whole time. Besides, three alternative objective functions are analyzed and the outcome indicates taking minimal makespan as the objective function is better in most instances.
Optimizing Evacuation Routes and Departure Schedules in View of Delay and Capacity of Intersections

Abstract:As an important part of emergency management, the regional evacuation process indeed involves movement of people by vehicles, which may generate large plenty of traffic trips during limited time. Efficient tools are needed to establish evacuation routing plans that identify routes and departure schedules for each group of vehicles to ensure safety and order. Most research works on the optimization of evacuation routing plans do not explicitly consider delay and capacity at intersections. However, in congested street networks, turning movement delays and capacity at intersections may be significant, and ignoring them may lead to the calculation of suboptimal or illogical routing plans. With turning delay and capacity at intersections as weights of node, the evacuation road network is expressed as a network with directional node-weight and the problem of finding optimal evacuation routing plans is described as a special quickest transshipment problem in such network. A heuristic algorithm is presented, which models capacity as a time series and finds suboptimal routing plans by searching dynamic routes with earliest arrival time, establishing the flows(vehicles) assigned to it and modifying capacity etc. iteratively. A numerical example is given.

Abstract:Safety and security are of paramount importance, it is important to optimize and improve the routes of trucks that carry hazardous materials. In this study, we not only ensure the risk in the network, but also consider the transportation cost and the factors such as buildings and emergency facilities around the routes. The Geographic Information System (GIS) is used to quantify the factors on each section in the network. We present an epsilon constrained multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming optimization model to find the robust and stable transportation optimization solutions. At the end, we complete a case analysis of the proposed methodology to determine the motorway segments in Jiangsu province, China and test the above algorithm on the network, which has 144 nodes and 388 sections. The results we get show that the factors of buildings play a very important role in the model, and the multi-objective mixed-integer linear optimization model is reasonable and performs good quality.

Abstract:Industrial Management &Data Systems, Ahead of Print. Purpose This paper studies green vehicle routing problems of cold chain logistics with the consideration of the full set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an optimization model of green vehicle routing for cold chain logistics (with an acronym of GVRPCCL) is developed. The purpose of this paper is to minimize the total costs, which include vehicle operating cost, quality loss cost, product freshness cost, penalty cost, energy cost and GHG emissions cost. In addition, this research also investigates the effect of changing the vehicle maximum load in relation to cost and GHG emissions. Design/methodology/approach This study develops a mathematical optimization model, considering the total cost and GHG emission. The standard particle swarm optimization and modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO), based on an intelligent optimization algorithm, are applied in this study to solve the routing problem of a real case. Findings The results of this study show the extend of the proposed MPSO performing better in achieving green-focussed vehicle routing and that considering the full set of GHG costs in the objective functions will reduce the total costs and environmental-diminishing emissions of GHG through the comparative analysis. The research outputs also evaluated the effect of different enterprises' conditions (e.g. customers' locations and demand patterns) for better distribution routes planning. Research limitations/implications There are some limitations in the proposed model. This study assumes that the vehicle is at a constant speed and it does not consider uncertainties, such as weather conditions and road conditions. Originality/value Prior studies, particularly in green cold chain logistics vehicle routing problem, are fairly limited. The prior works revolved around GHG emissions problem have not considered methane and nitrous oxides. This study takes into account the characteristics of cold chain logistics and the full set of GHGs.

Abstract:Since accidents of hazardous chemicals transportation will cause serious loss to the surrounding environment and lives and properties, this paper studies the transportation route optimization problem of hazardous chemicals under dynamic time-varying conditions. Combined with the goal of green sustainable development, a multiobjective nonlinear optimization model is constructed to minimize the transportation risk, transportation cost, and carbon emissions generated in the transportation. The model is solved by the improved Fast Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm with Elite Strategy (NSGA-II) algorithm. The effectiveness of the model and the algorithm are tested on the Sioux Falls network. The experimental results show that under time-varying conditions, a vehicle's departure at different times will generate different transportation costs and risks. Therefore, enterprises need to rationally arrange the departure time of vehicles according to the time windows of customer nodes and road conditions. In additio, from the relationship between the optimization objectives, in order to achieve green, sustainable and low-risk transportation, enterprises should first reduce their transportation costs.

Abstract:This paper studies the time-dependent cold chain logistics vehicle routing problem considering both traffic congestion and carbon emissions. A cold chain logistics model with time-dependent green vehicle paths with time windows (TDGVRPTW) was developed to fulfil the demands of green logistics and to take comprehensive account of consideration should be given to factors such as road congestion and carbon emissions. The objective of the model is to minimise total costs, which include carbon emission costs, penalty costs, fuel consumption costs, fixed costs, damage costs and refrigeration costs. Two-phase hybrid search algorithm was developed to solve this model. During the initial stage of the algorithm, a dual-population ant colony optimization (DACO) algorithm sharing the optimal individual is employed to optimize the distribution route of the vehicle. During the second phase, an adaptive golden section search (AGSS) algorithm is used to optimise the departure time of the vehicle from the distribution centre to avoid traffic congestion time periods. To validate the effectiveness of the suggested two-phase hybrid search algorithm, it is applied to the improved Solomon benchmark test set. The experimental findings demonstrate that the two-phase hybrid search algorithm can reasonably plan the driving routes and departure times for each vehicle, effectively avoiding peak traffic congestion periods in the city, and reducing the overall delivery cost.

Abstract:In response to violent market competition and demand for low-carbon economy, cold chain logistics companies have to pay attention to customer satisfaction and carbon emission for better development. In this paper, a biobjective mathematical model is established for cold chain logistics network in consideration of economic, social, and environmental benefits; in other words, the total cost and distribution period of cold chain logistics are optimized, while the total cost consists of cargo damage cost, refrigeration cost of refrigeration equipment, transportation cost, fuel consumption cost, penalty cost of time window, and operation cost of distribution centres. One multiobjective hyperheuristic optimization framework is proposed to address this multiobjective problem. In the framework, four selection strategies and four acceptance criteria for solution set are proposed to improve the performance of the multiobjective hyperheuristic framework. As known from a comparative study, the proposed algorithm had better overall performance than NSGA-II. Furthermore, instances of cold chain logistics are modelled and solved, and the resulting Pareto solution set offers diverse options for a decision maker to select an appropriate cold chain logistics distribution network in the interest of the logistics company.

Abstract:The proper vehicle-route selection is a key challenge affecting the quality of urban logistics since any delay may cause disasters. This study proposes a novel approach of using symmetry/asymmetry traffic context data and multi-criteria decision analysis to optimize vehicle-route selection as part of urban-logistical planning. The traffic context data are collected from official urban transportation databases and metadata of Google Maps route planning to construct a context-based social network. The traffic features and routing criteria have symmetry/asymmetry properties to influence the decision of path selection. Multi-criteria decision analysis can generate a ranking of candidate paths based on an evaluation of traffic data in context-based social networks to recommend to the deliveryman. The deliveryman can select a reasonable path for delivering products according to the ranking of candidate paths. A case study demonstrates the steps of the proposed approach. Experimental results show that the precision is 79.65%, recall is 80.70%, and F1-score is 80.17%, thus proving the vehicle-route recommendation effectiveness. The contribution of this work is to optimize traffic-routing solutions for improved urban logistics in smart cities. It helps deliverymen send products as soon as possible to customers to retain quality, especially in cold-chain logistics.

Abstract:This paper aims to address the time-dependent multi-depot vehicle routing problem with time windows (MDVRPTW) in urban cold chain logistics under a dynamic road network. The study considers the impact of carbon emissions and traffic congestion on urban cold chain logistics distribution activities. It proposes a cross-period road segment travel time calculation method, constructs a multi-objective optimization model that minimizes total costs encompassing comprehensive transportation costs, carbon emission costs, time penalty costs, cargo damage costs, and refrigeration costs. An adaptive large neighborhood search ant colony optimization algorithm (ALNS_ACO) is designed, which combines the exploration capability of ant colony optimization algorithm (ACO) with the local search capability of adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm (ALNS) to optimize and solve the model. Finally, the model is optimized and solved through simulation using six sets of C-type, R-type, and RC-type instances from the Solomon test database. The results indicate that: 1) The planned routes can reasonably avoid peak congestion periods in the morning and evening. Compared to the single-center scenario, the multi-center approach achieves superior solutions in terms of the total cost, carbon emissions, and total travel time in urban cold chain logistics distribution; 2) The exacerbation of traffic congestion leads to increased costs, and different optimization objectives have a significant impact on the model solutions; 3) Finally, through multidimensional comparisons of simulation performance with ACO and GA algorithms, the effectiveness of the proposed optimization algorithm is validated.

Abstract:This study presents a bi-objective optimization model for the Green Vehicle-Routing Problem in cold chain logistics, with a focus on symmetric distance matrices, aiming to minimize total costs, including carbon emissions, while maximizing customer satisfaction. To address this complex challenge, we developed a Stage-Specific Multi-Objective Five-Element Cycle Optimization algorithm (MOFECO-SS), which dynamically adjusts optimization strategies across different stages of the process, thereby enhancing overall efficiency. Extensive comparative analyses with existing algorithms demonstrate that MOFECO-SS consistently outperforms in solving the multi-objective optimization model, particularly in reducing total costs and carbon emissions while maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction. The symmetric nature of the distance matrix further aids in achieving balanced and optimized route planning. The results highlight that MOFECO-SS offers decision-makers flexible route planning options that balance cost efficiency with environmental sustainability, ultimately improving the effectiveness of cold chain logistics operations.

Optimizing Dual Distribution Scheme in Pharmaceutical Cold Chain for Cost and Carbon Emissions Reduction

Abstract:The reduction in comprehensive costs and carbon emissions in the process of trans-regional and multi-seasonal pharmaceutical cold chain logistics is a highly debated topic. To simultaneously address these issues, we propose a dual distribution method based on the vehicle routing problem (VRP), wherein either a refrigerated truck or van equipped with a refrigerated container is selected for drug delivery. To verify the effectiveness of this method, we design a comparison function to calculate the depletion of consumables and create a better distribution scheme for customer nodes in multiple temperature zones with various demands. To further optimize the model, we introduce the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) to establish a large-scale neighborhood search vehicle routing model. Additionally, we utilize the greedy algorithm and an upgraded nonlinear factor to accelerate convergence speed and enhance accuracy. Ultimately, our experiments demonstrate significant advantages over existing algorithms, while providing valuable insights into economical and environmentally friendly pharmaceutical cold chain logistics.

Abstract:As to large-scale logistics transportations, road transport plays the primary role and route planning is often used to find the shortest path to save cost. However beside fuel consumption, many other costs on the road, such as tolls contribute a lot to the road transport cost, so cutting down the total cost while maintaining efficiency is very important for logistic businesses in many cases where the shortest path may be not the really optimal route. Based on Geographic Information System, one of the key technologies of intelligent traffic system, such as Google Maps, this paper presents a transportation optimization framework which integrates the cost computation including tolls into route planning with time constraints. It can reduce the total cost for long distance shipment and intra-city short distance freight as well while still satisfying the time constraints, which is very crucial for areas with many toll gates with diverse toll policies in China. The experiment verifies usability and validity of the present tool.

Abstract:The road network in rural areas is complex and the infrastructure is relatively backward. The multi-temperature zone cold chain logistics involves agricultural products with different temperature requirements, which requires considering the transportation cost, carbon emission cost, refrigeration cost, and time cost of different temperature zones during path planning, thereby increasing the difficulty of path planning. Therefore, a multi-objective optimization-based algorithm for selecting the optimal path of rural multi-temperature zone cold chain dynamic logistics intermodal transportation is proposed. Based on the analysis of the multi-temperature cold chain collection and distribution model based on multimodal transportation, a multi-objective optimization model is constructed. This model aims to minimize transportation costs, carbon emission costs, refrigeration costs, time costs, and maximize logistics quality, while satisfying constraints such as transfer schedule times, the number of transport mode conversions, transport mode selection, and time continuity. To solve this model, an improved NSGA-II algorithm is adopted, which combines an improved mutation operator, congestion distance calculation, and the C-W saving algorithm to achieve the optimal transport path solution. Additionally, ArcGIS software is used to implement the shortest path planning based on real road networks. The experimental results show that by selecting the road-rail combined transport mode and adopting the D1–D6–D10 transport path, it is possible to transport fresh agricultural products from location A to the distribution center at location B, with the lowest Pareto fitness value. Furthermore, the algorithm's effectiveness is further verified by completing the end-of-life fresh agricultural product distribution task with four multi-temperature refrigerated vehicles. The study also finds that extending or shortening the latest service time window for customers, although it leads to a decrease or increase in the optimal value of the algorithm's objective function, has little impact on the average distribution time and transport vehicles. These findings provide new theoretical and practical guidance for the path selection of multimodal transportation in multi-temperature cold chain logistics, with significant theoretical and application value.

Robust Dynamic Multi-Objective Vehicle Routing Optimization Method

Abstract:For dynamic multi-objective vehicle routing problems, the waiting time of vehicle, the number of serving vehicles, and the total distance of routes were normally considered as the optimization objectives. Except for the above objectives, fuel consumption that leads to the environmental pollution and energy consumption was focused on in this paper. Considering the vehicles’ load and the driving distance, a corresponding carbon emission model was built and set as an optimization objective. Dynamic multi-objective vehicle routing problems with hard time windows and randomly appeared dynamic customers, subsequently, were modeled. In existing planning methods, when the new service demand came up, global vehicle routing optimization method was triggered to find the optimal routes for non-served customers, which was time-consuming. Therefore, a robust dynamic multi-objective vehicle routing method with two-phase is proposed . Three highlights of the novel method are: (i) After finding optimal robust virtual routes for all customers by adopting multi-objective particle swarm optimization in the first phase, static vehicle routes for static customers are formed by removing all dynamic customers from robust virtual routes in next phase. (ii) The dynamically appeared customers append to be served according to their service time and the vehicles’ statues. Global vehicle routing optimization is triggered only when no suitable locations can be found for dynamic customers. (iii) A metric measuring the algorithms robustness is given. The statistical results indicated that the routes obtained by the proposed method have better stability and robustness, but may be sub-optimum. Moreover, time-consuming global vehicle routing optimization is avoided as dynamic customers appear.

In the context of global climate change and environmental sustainability, reducing carbon emissions has become a primary focus for both businesses and governments. The current challenges in rural logistics largely stem from low adoption of new energy technologies and widespread idling of vehicles, resulting in high carbon emissions in rural logistics operations. Against this backdrop, this study addresses the issues by considering the application of new energy sources, distribution strategies, vehicle carbon emission calculations, and other low-carbon optimization methods. The objective is to establish a model that optimizes node construction costs, operational costs, transportation costs, and carbon emission costs. This research aims to tackle the problem of village-level distribution center location and routing optimization, taking into account carbon emission costs as a decisive factor to reduce environmental impact. To achieve this goal, this paper proposes a comprehensive approach that combines the K-means++ algorithm with an enhanced genetic algorithm. In this approach, the K-means++ algorithm is first employed to select optimal locations for village-level distribution centers, minimizing construction, operational, and carbon emission costs. Subsequently, the enhanced genetic algorithm is utilized to determine the optimal distribution routes, incorporating a hybrid fleet of new energy and conventional vehicles, aiming to minimize overall costs, including carbon emissions and transportation costs. Application of our algorithm in a real rural distribution network demonstrates that, compared to traditional methods, it achieves higher efficiency while reducing carbon emission costs. Additionally, our study provides valuable insights for policymakers and decision-makers regarding carbon emission reduction and sustainable development, offering robust decision support for the planning and management of village-level distribution centers.

Sustainability Oriented Vehicle Route Planning Based on Time-Dependent Arc Travel Durations

Abstract:Traffic congestion has become a growing concern in cities, with both economic and environmental impacts on both individuals and the logistics industry. Therefore, a model of freight distribution in urban areas considering economic and environmental objectives needs to be established to alleviate the consequences. In this paper, a multi-stage heuristic algorithm is designed for solving the route planning based on time-dependent arc travel durations. The algorithm includes a savings method, a modified tabu search heuristic and a cycle transforming optimization (CTO) algorithm. Benchmark instances and the case of Jingdong, one of the largest e-commerce platforms in China, have been adopted to verify the accuracy and feasibility of the model and algorithm. Results of the performance test reveal that the designed algorithm is suitable for addressing large-scale instances. Based on the single objective models, two objectives referring to economical-related and environmental-related factors are considered in the proposed sustainability oriented bi-objective model, and a modified solution framework using a multi-objective decision making method with a relaxation coefficient which is designed for addressing the bi-objective model. Finally, the time-dependent arc travel durations based on real-time traffic information have been incorporated into the optimization algorithms, simulation of distribution process and dynamic route updating strategy, which can reduce costs and route-associated emissions of logistics companies.

Abstract:The solution to the capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) is vital for optimizing logistics. However, the transformation of real-world logistics problems into the CVRP involves diverse constraints, interactions between various routes, and a balance between optimization performance and computation load. In this study, we propose a systematic model originating from the part logistic routing problem (PLRP), which is a two-dimensional loading capacitated pickup-and-delivery problem that considers time windows, multiple uses of vehicles, queuing, transit, and heterogeneous vehicles. The newly introduced queuing and transit complicate the problem, and to the best of our knowledge, it cannot be solved using existing methods or the standard commercial optimizer. Hence, this problem has caused the existing research to develop, generalize, and extend into the two-dimensional CVRP (2L-CVRP). To solve this problem, we provide a framework that decouples the combination of 2L-CVRP and global optimization engineering and derives an efficient and realistic solver that integrates diverse types of intelligent algorithms. These algorithms include: (1) a heuristic algorithm for initializing feasible solutions by imitating manual planning, (2) asynchronous simulated annealing (SA) and Tabu search (TS) algorithms to accelerate the optimization of global routes based on novel bundling mechanics, (3) dynamic programming for routing, (4) heuristic algorithms for packing, (5) simulators to review associated time-related constraints, and (6) truck-saving processes to promote the optimal solution and reduce the number of trucks. Moreover, the performances of the SA and TS solver algorithms are compared in terms of various size scales of data to obtain an empirical recommendation for selection. The proposed model successfully established an intelligent management system that can provide systematic solutions for logistics planning, resulting in higher performance and lower costs compared to that of manual planning.
Resource Allocation in an Uncertain Environment: Application to Snowplowing Operations in Utah

Abstract:We consider a two-stage planning problem where a fleet of snowplow trucks is divided among a set of independent regions, each of which then designs routes for efficient snow removal. The central authority wishes to allocate trucks to improve service quality across the regions. Stochasticity is introduced by uncertain weather conditions and unforeseen failures of snowplow trucks. We study two versions of this problem. The first aims to minimize the maximum turnaround time (across all regions) that can be sustained with a user-specified probability. The second seeks to minimize the total expected workload that has not been completed within a user-specified time frame. We develop algorithms that solve these problems effectively and demonstrate their practical value through a case application to snowplowing operations in Utah, obtaining solutions that significantly outperform the allocation currently used in practice.
