Abstract:We propose a simple new combinatorial model to study spaces of acyclic Jacobi diagrams, in which they are identified with algebras of words modulo operations. This provides a starting point for a word-problem type combinatorial investigation of such spaces, and provides fresh insights on known results.

Abstract:We introduce the combinatorial model of $J$-folded alcove paths in an affine Weyl group and construct representations of affine Hecke algebras using this model. We study boundedness of these representations, and we state conjectures linking our combinatorial formulae to Kazhdan-Lusztig theory and Opdam's Plancherel Theorem.

Abstract:For the generation of acyclic biological diagrams, from a graph-theoretical perspective, we introduce the relative diagrams of cyclic permutations with ramphoid and keratoid vertices of degree 2, which correspond to Motzkin and Dyck words/paths. The relation between these two types of diagrams, defines the generation of the first via the permutations of the second, which may be of assistance in the study and treatment of several biological problems.

Abstract:The Brattelli diagram associated with a given bicolored Dynkin-Coxeter graph of type $A_n$ determines planar fractal sets obtained by infinite dissections of a given triangle. All triangles appearing in the dissection process have angles that are multiples of $\pi/ (n+1).$ There are usually several possible infinite dissections compatible with a given $n$ but a given one makes use of $n/2$ triangle types if $n$ is even. Jones algebra with index $[ 4 \ \cos^2{\pi \over n+1}]^{-1}$ (values of the discrete range) act naturally on vector spaces associated with those fractal sets. Triangles of a given type are always congruent at each step of the dissection process. In the particular case $n=4$, there are isometric and the whole structure lead, after proper inflation, to aperiodic Penrose tilings. The ``tilings'' associated with other values of the index are discussed and shown to be encoded by equivalence classes of infinite sequences (with appropriate constraints) using $n/2$ digits (if $n$ is even) and generalizing the Fibonacci numbers.

A combinatorial approach to scattering diagrams

Abstract:Scattering diagrams arose in the context of mirror symmetry, but a special class of scattering diagrams (the cluster scattering diagrams) were recently developed to prove key structural results on cluster algebras. We use the connection to cluster algebras to calculate the function attached to the limiting wall of a rank-2 cluster scattering diagram of affine type. In the skew-symmetric rank-2 affine case, this recovers a formula due to Reineke. In the same case, we show that the generating function for signed Narayana numbers appears in a role analogous to a cluster variable. In acyclic finite type, we construct cluster scattering diagrams of acyclic finite type from Cambrian fans and sortable elements, with a simple direct proof.

Abstract:The Littelmann path moel gives a realization of the crystals of integrable representations of symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras. Recent work of Gaussent-Littelmann and others has demonstrated a connection between this model and the geometry of the loop Grassmannian. The alcove walk model is a version of the path model which is intimately connected to the combinatorics of the affine Hecke algebra. In this paper we define a refined alcove walk model which encodes the points of the affine flag variety. We show that this combinatorial indexing naturally indexes the "cells" in generalized Mirkovic-Vilonen intersections.

Abstract:The data for many useful bidirectional constructions in applied category theory (optics, learners, games, quantum combs) can be expressed in terms of diagrams containing "holes" or "incomplete parts", sometimes known as comb diagrams. We give a possible formalization of what these circuits with incomplete parts represent in terms of symmetric monoidal categories, using the dinaturality equivalence relations arising from a coend. Our main idea is to extend this formal description to allow for infinite circuits with holes indexed by the natural numbers. We show how infinite combs over an arbitrary symmetric monoidal category form again a symmetric monoidal category where notions of delay and feedback can be considered. The constructions presented here are still preliminary work.

Diagram model for the Okada algebra and monoid

Abstract:It is well known that the Young lattice is the Bratelli diagram of the symmetric groups expressing how irreducible representations restrict from $S_N$ to $S_{N-1}$. In 1988, Stanley discovered a similar lattice called the Young-Fibonacci lattice which was realized as the Bratelli diagram of a family of algebras by Okada in 1994. In this paper, we realize the Okada algebra and its associated monoid using a labeled version of Temperley-Lieb arc-diagrams. We prove in full generality that the dimension of the Okada algebra is $n!$. In particular, we interpret a natural bijection between permutations and labeled arc-diagrams as an instance of Fomin's Robinson-Schensted correspondence for the Young-Fibonacci lattice. We prove that the Okada monoid is aperiodic and describe its Green relations. Lifting those results to the algebra allows us to construct a cellular basis of the Okada algebra. }

Combinatorics of higher-categorical diagrams

Abstract:This is a book on higher-categorical diagrams, including pasting diagrams. It aims to provide a thorough and modern reference on the subject, collecting, revisiting and expanding results scattered across the literature, informed by recent advances and practical experience with higher-dimensional diagram rewriting. We approach the subject as a kind of directed combinatorial topology: a diagram is a map from a "directed cell complex", encoded combinatorially as a face poset together with orientation data. Unlike previous expositions, we adopt from the beginning a functorial viewpoint, focussing on morphisms and categorical constructions. We do not tie ourselves to a specific model of higher categories, and instead treat diagrams as independent combinatorial structures that admit functorial interpretations in various contexts. Topics covered include the theory of layerings of diagrams; acyclicity properties and their consequences; constructions including Gray products, suspensions, and joins; special shapes such as globes, oriented simplices, cubes, and positive opetopes; the interpretation of diagrams in strict omega-categories and their geometric realisation as simplicial and CW complexes; and Steiner's theory of directed chain complexes.

A Structural and Nominal Syntax for Diagrams

Abstract:The correspondence between monoidal categories and graphical languages of diagrams has been studied extensively, leading to applications in quantum computing and communication, systems theory, circuit design and more. From the categorical perspective, diagrams can be specified using (name-free) combinators which enjoy elegant equational properties. However, conventional notations for diagrammatic structures, such as hardware description languages (VHDL, Verilog) or graph languages (Dot), use a different style, which is flat, relational, and reliant on extensive use of names (labels). Such languages are not known to enjoy nice syntactic equational properties. However, since they make it relatively easy to specify (and modify) arbitrary diagrammatic structures they are more popular than the combinator style. In this paper we show how the two approaches to diagram syntax can be reconciled and unified in a way that does not change the semantics and the existing equational theory. Additionally, we give sound and complete equational theories for the combined syntax.

A framework unifying some bijections for graphs and its connection to Lawrence polytopes

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected graph. The Jacobian group (also known as the Picard group or sandpile group) of $G$ is a finite abelian group whose cardinality equals the number of spanning trees of $G$. The Jacobian group admits a canonical simply transitive action on the set $\mathcal{R}(G)$ of cycle-cocycle reversal classes of orientations of $G$. Hence one can construct combinatorial bijections between spanning trees of $G$ and $\mathcal{R}(G)$ to build connections between spanning trees and the Jacobian group. The BBY bijections and the Bernardi bijections are two important examples. In this paper, we construct a new family of such bijections that includes both. Our bijections depend on a pair of atlases (different from the ones in manifold theory) that abstract and generalize certain common features of the two known bijections. The definitions of these atlases are derived from triangulations and dissections of the Lawrence polytopes associated to $G$. The acyclic cycle signatures and cocycle signatures used to define the BBY bijections correspond to regular triangulations. Our bijections can extend to subgraph-orientation correspondences. Most of our results hold for regular matroids. We present our work in the language of fourientations, which are a generalization of orientations.

Abstract:A diagram of algebras is a functor valued in a category of associative algebras. I construct an operad acting on the Hochschild bicomplex of a diagram of algebras. Using this operad, I give a direct proof that the Hochschild cohomology of a diagram of algebras is a Gerstenhaber algebra. I also show that the total complex is an $L_\infty$-algebra. The same results are true for the reduced and asimplicial subcomplexes and asimplicial cohomology. This structure governs deformations of diagrams of algebras through the Maurer-Cartan equation.

Data-Parallel Algorithms for String Diagrams

Abstract:We give parallel algorithms for string diagrams represented as structured cospans of ACSets. Specifically, we give linear (sequential) and logarithmic (parallel) time algorithms for composition, tensor product, construction of diagrams from arbitrary $\Sigma$-terms, and application of functors to diagrams. Our datastructure can represent morphisms of both the free symmetric monoidal category over an arbitrary signature as well as those with a chosen Special Frobenius structure. We show how this additional (hypergraph) structure can be used to map diagrams to diagrams of optics. This leads to a case study in which we define an algorithm for efficiently computing symbolic representations of gradient-based learners based on reverse derivatives. The work we present here is intended to be useful as a general purpose datastructure. Implementation requires only integer arrays and well-known algorithms, and is data-parallel by constuction. We therefore expect it to be applicable to a wide variety of settings, including embedded and parallel hardware and low-level languages.

Abstract:Symmetric powers are an important notion in mathematics, computer science and physics. In mathematics, they are used to build symmetric algebras, in computer science, to build free exponential modalities of linear logic and in physics, Fock spaces. We study symmetric powers through the lens of category theory. We focus here on the simpler case where nonnegative rational scalars are available ie. we study symmetric powers in symmetric monoidal $\mathbb{Q}_{\ge 0}$-linear categories. Among the developments, a main point is the introduction of the notion of binomial graded bimonoid and the associated string diagrams which characterize symmetric powers in this setting.

Manifold Diagrams for Higher Categories

Abstract:We develop a graphical calculus of manifold diagrams which generalises string and surface diagrams to arbitrary dimensions. Manifold diagrams are pasting diagrams for $(\infty, n)$-categories that admit a semi-strict composition operation for which associativity and unitality is strict. The weak interchange law satisfied by composition of manifold diagrams is determined geometrically through isotopies of diagrams. By building upon framed combinatorial topology, we can classify critical points in isotopies at which the arrangement of cells changes. This allows us to represent manifold diagrams combinatorially and use them as shapes with which to probe $(\infty, n)$-categories, presented as $n$-fold Segal spaces. Moreover, for any system of labels for the singularities in a manifold diagram, we show how to generate a free $(\infty, n)$-category.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to introduce and investigate the notion of Jacobi-Jordan conformal algebra. They are a generalization of Jacobi-Jordan algebras which correspond to the case in which the formal parameter lambda equals 0. We consider some related structures such as conformal modules, corresponding representations and O-operators. Therefore, conformal derivations from Jacobi-Jordan conformal algebras to their conformal modules are used to describe conformal derivations of Jacobi-Jordan conformal algebras of semidirect product type. Moreover, we study a class of Jacobi-Jordan conformal algebras called quadratic Jacobi-Jordan conformal algebras, which are characterized by mock-Gel'fand Dorfman bialgebras. Finally, the C[delta]-split extending structures problem for Jacobi-Jordan conformal algebras is studied. Furthermore, we introduce an unified product of a given Jacobi-Jordan conformal algebra $J$ and a given C[delta]-module K. This product includes some other interesting products of Jacobi-Jordan conformal algebras such as twisted product or crossed product. Using this product, a cohomological type object is constructed to provide a theoretical answer to the C[delta]-split extending structures problem.

Abstract:We study the combinatorics of an analogue of Green's $\mathcal{J}$-relation (a.k.a. the two-sided relation) for the bicategory of finite-dimensional bimodules over finite-dimensional associative algebras over a fixed field. In particular, we provide a number of exameples for both $\mathcal{J}$-equivalent and inequivalent but $\mathcal{J}$-comparabe algebras.

Abstract:We investigate analogues of alternating sign matrices, called partial alternating sign matrices. We prove bijections between these matrices and several other combinatorial objects. We use an analogue of Wieland's gyration on fully-packed loops, which we relate to the study of toggles and order ideals. Finally, we show that rowmotion on order ideals of a specific poset and gyration on partial fully-packed loop configurations have the same orbit structure.

Abstract:We study various acyclicity conditions on higher-categorical pasting diagrams in the combinatorial framework of regular directed complexes. We present an apparently weakest acyclicity condition under which the $\omega$-category presented by a diagram shape is freely generated in the sense of polygraphs. We then consider stronger conditions under which this $\omega$-category is equivalent to one obtained from an augmented directed chain complex in the sense of Steiner, or consists only of subsets of cells in the diagram. Finally, we study the stability of these conditions under the operations of pasting, suspensions, Gray products, joins and duals.
