Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA), as a mussel-inspired material, exhibits numerous favorable performance characteristics, such as a simple preparation process, prominent photothermal transfer efficiency, excellent biocompatibility, outstanding drug binding ability, and strong adhesive properties, showing great potential in the biomedical field. The rapid development of this field in the past few years has engendered substantial progress in PDA antibacterial materials. This review presents recent advances in PDA-based antimicrobial materials, including the preparation methods and antibacterial mechanisms of free-standing PDA materials and PDA-based composite materials. Furthermore, the urgent challenges and future research opportunities for PDA antibacterial materials are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Polydopamine (PDA) has shown great potentials in biomedical fields due largely to its unique physicochemical properties, including high photothermal transfer efficiency, excellent drug binding capacity, versatile adhesion ability, sensitive pH responsibility and great biocompatibility and biodegradability. These properties confer PDA-based nanoparticles the potentials either as the drug carriers for advanced drug delivery or as the bioactive agents for photothermal therapy, imaging and biosensing. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of PDA, its polymerization mechanisms and the potentials of PDA-based nano-systems in treating various diseases, including cancer, diabetes, inflammation, bacterial infection and Parkinson's disease. In addition, the concerns of PDA in biomedical use are also discussed.</p>

Abstract:As a mussel-inspired material, polydopamine (PDA), possesses many properties, such as a simple preparation process, good biocompatibility, strong adhesive property, easy functionalization, outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency, and strong quenching effect. PDA has attracted increasingly considerable attention because it provides a simple and versatile approach to functionalize material surfaces for obtaining a variety of multifunctional nanomaterials. In this review, recent significant research developments of PDA including its synthesis and polymerization mechanism, physicochemical properties, different nano/microstructures, and diverse applications are summarized and discussed. For the sections of its applications in surface modification and biomedicine, we mainly highlight the achievements in the past few years (2016–2019). The remaining challenges and future perspectives of PDA-based nanoplatforms are discussed rationally at the end. This timely and overall review should be desirable for a wide range of scientists and facilitate further development of surface coating methods and the production of PDA-based materials.

Abstract:Thanks to rapid development of nanotechnology, studies have discovered an emerging polymer nanomaterial—polydopamine (PDA) inspired by natural mussels. PDA possesses many outstanding characteristics, including broad light absorption, high reactivity, simple preparation and free radical scavenging. Therefore, the diverse PDA-derived nanoplatforms have been developed for multiple applications, including tumor treatment, imaging, antibacterials and antioxidant This review aims to outline the advancements of PDA-derived nanomaterials in photothermal therapy (PTT)-assisted tumor therapy, theranostics, antibacterials, antioxidant and delivery of active molecules, including preparation methods, potential polymerization mechanism and various nanostructures of PDA as well. The existing limitations of PDA-derived nanoparticles are also rationally discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention in different research fields because of their many fascinating physicochemical properties. However, as an analogue of naturally occurring melanin, PDA nanoparticles (PDANPs) typically exhibit weak fluorescence properties. Herein, we report a facile one-pot method for synthesizing bright blue luminescent PDANPs through the redox modulation of PDA surface chemistry. The composition and morphology of the resultant NPs were systematically characterized by transmission electron microscopy and several spectroscopy methods, which verified the successful fabrication of PDANPs. More importantly, comparative chemical analysis of dopamine polymerization revealed the significant impacts of synthesis conditions and PDA surface chemistry on the luminescence properties of PDANPs. Remarkably, in addition to their excellent water-solubility, salt-tolerance and high photostability under extreme pH conditions, the as-prepared PDANPs possess the highest quantum yield (5.1%) among all the reported intrinsic fluorescent PDANPs. Moreover, based on the coordination interaction between phenolic hydroxyl groups of PDANPs and ferric ions (Fe3+), the synthesized PDANPs were successfully utilized as a turn-off sensing platform for sensitive and selective detection of Fe3+ without using any additional targeting molecules. Upon increasing the Fe3+ concentration in the range from 0.5 to 20 μM, the fluorescence intensity of PDANPs decreased linearly. The detection limit of Fe3+ was 0.15 μM. Finally, this fluorescent sensor was successfully used to determine Fe3+ in natural water samples, showing good prospects for practical applications and may pave the way for the development of new rational methodologies for further enhancing the intrinsic fluorescence of PDA and fabricating other novel fluorescent organic nanoparticles.

Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA), the final oxidation product of dopamine or other catecholamines, attracted much attention as versatile coatings that can be used to cover the surface of almost all materials with a conformal layer of adjustable thickness ranging from a few to about 100 nm. These PDA layers can be subsequently modified with molecules carrying nucleophilic groups or with metallic nanoparticles from solutions containing metallic cations. However, during the deposition of PDA film on the surfaces, the reaction products that are simultaneously obtained from the oxidation of catecholamines in solution precipitate. Hence, some recent effort has been devoted to produce PDA in the form of nanoparticles. The aim of this short review is to give a comprehensive description of the synthesis methods yielding of PDA nanoparticles in the absence or in the presence of templating agents (polymers, polyelectrolytes, surfactants, proteins, and even some small organic molecules). We will also describe the use of thin PDA layers to coat already synthesized nanoparticles or nanotubes. Finally, several first applications of the obtained PDA nanoparticles will be described.

Abstract:<p>Recently, polydopamine (PDA) has emerged as a popular material due to its striking properties. As a novel bio-inspired material, PDA can be easily formed in environmental conditions on virtually all kinds of inorganic and organic substrates. The abundant functional groups on PDA allow it to be a versatile platform for further loading of other components with desired functionalities. Along with its excellent performance in various fields, research interest and attention about PDA have significantly increased in recent years. Considering increasing interest and advances in energy, environmental, and catalytic fields, we present this mini-review regarding the latest development of PDA-based functional materials in these fields. The properties of PDA-based functional materials are briefly introduced at the beginning. Emphases are put on the latest applications in areas of batteries, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis, photo- and chemo-catalysis, removal of heavy metals and organic dyes, oil/water separation as well as seawater desalination. At the end of this mini-review, we give a straightforward summary and prospect about PDA-based functional materials in these applications. We hope this mini-review could provide some useful information to guide the future development of PDA-based functional materials.</p>

Abstract:Mussel-inspired chemistry with material-independent properties has emerged as a facile and versatile strategy for surface modification of various scaffolds. Motivated by the tremendous progress and rapid growth of polydopamine (PDA)-based substrates in biosensing, an updated review to close the distance between the properties and preparation of PDA with its bioanalytical applications is presented here. First, the parameters and methods that affect the polymerization of dopamine are discussed, followed by the consideration of different PDA functionalities to construct bioanalysis platforms and their applications in various biosensing purposes, ending up with emerging applications of cutting-edge PDA-integrated biosensing platforms. The current challenges and future perspectives regarding how to better employ PDA in bioanalytical applications are discussed in the last section.

Abstract:In efforts to overcome current challenges in cancer treatment, multifunctional nanoparticles are attracting growing interest, including nanoparticles made with polydopamine (PDA). PDA is a nature-inspired polymer with a dark brown color. It has excellent biocompatibility and is biodegradable, offering a range of extraordinary inherent advantages. These include excellent drug loading capability, photothermal conversion efficiency, and adhesive properties. Though the mechanism of dopamine polymerization remains unclear, PDA has demonstrated exceptional flexibility in engineering desired morphology and size, easy and straightforward functionalization, etc. Moreover, it offers enormous potential for designing multifunctional nanomaterials for innovative approaches in cancer treatment. The aim of this work is to review studies on PDA, where the potential to develop multifunctional nanomaterials with applications in photothermal therapy has been demonstrated. Future prospects of PDA for developing applications in enhancing radiotherapy and/or immunotherapy, including for image-guided drug delivery to boost therapeutic efficacy and minimal side effects, are presented.

Abstract:Multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescent materials have gained increasing attention for their fundamental investigation and intelligent applications. In this work, we report design and synthesis of a novel polyamic acid bearing oligoaniline, triphenylamine, and fluorene groups, which served as sensitive units and fluorescence emission unit, respectively. The resulting polymer exhibits multiple stimuli-responsive fluorescence switching behavior triggered by redox species, pH, electrochemical, and pressure stimuli. Every fluorescence switching mechanism upon each stimulus was studied in detail. The interactions and energy transfer between sensitive units and emission unit are largely responsible for this fascinating fluorescent switching behavior. This work provides a deep understanding of the optical switching essence upon these stimuli, opening the way for the development of new fluorescent sensing applications.

Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA)-based materials inspired by the adhesive proteins of mussels have attracted increasing attention owing to the universal adhesiveness, antioxidant activity, fluorescence quenching ability, excellent biocompatibility, and especially photothermal conversion capability. The high binding ability of PDA to a variety of metal ions offers a paradigm for the exploration of metal-chelated polydopamine nanomaterials with fantastic properties and functions. This review systematically summarizes the latest progress of metal-chelated polydopamine nanomaterials for the applications in biomedicine, catalysis, and energy storage. Different fabrication strategies for metal-chelated polydopamine nanomaterials with various composition, structure, size, and surface chemistry, such as the pre-functionalization method, the one-pot co-assembly method, and the post-modification method, are summarized. Furthermore, emerging applications of metal-chelated polydopamine nanomaterials in the fields ranging from cancer therapy, theranostics, antibacterial, catalysis to energy storage are highlighted. Additionally, the critical remaining challenges and future directions of this area are discussed to promote the further development and practical applications of PDA-based materials.

Abstract:The development of novel fluorescent nanoprobes has attracted great current research interest over the past few decades due to their superior optical properties and multifunctional capability as compared with small organic dyes. Although great advance has been made in the utilization of fluorescent nanoprobes for biomedical applications, development of novel fluorescent nanoprobes that possess good fluorescent properties, biocompatibility, biodegradability and water dispersibility through a convenient and effective route is still highly desirable. In this work, we reported for the first time that novel fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) can be conveniently fabricated via self-polymerization of dopamine and polyethyleneimine at room temperature and in an air atmosphere within 2 h. These FONs exhibited strong green fluorescence, high water stability and excellent biocompatibility, making them highly potential for biological imaging applications. More importantly, due to the high reactivity of polydopamine, these FONs might also be further functionalized with other functional components through Michael addition or Schiff base reaction. Therefore the method described in this work would open new avenues for the fabrication of fluorescent nanoprobes for various biomedical applications.

Abstract:The development of polymeric luminescent nanomaterials for biomedical applications has recently attracted a large amount of attention due to the remarkable advantages of these materials compared with small organic dyes and fluorescent inorganic nanomaterials. Among these polymeric luminescent nanomaterials, polymeric luminescent nanomaterials based on dyes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties should be of great research interest due to their unique AIE properties, the designability of polymers and their multifunctional potential. In this review, the recent advances in the design and biomedical applications of polymeric luminescent nanomaterials based on AIE dyes is summarized. Various design strategies for incorporation of these AIE dyes into polymeric systems are included. The potential biomedical applications such as biological imaging, and use in biological sensors and theranostic systems of these polymeric AIE-based nanomaterials have also been highlighted. We trust this review will attract significant interest from scientists from different research fields in chemistry, materials, biology and interdisciplinary areas.

Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA) is a major type of artificial melanin material with many interesting properties such as antioxidant activity, free-radical scavenging, high photothermal conversion efficiency, and strong metal-ion chelation. The high affinity of PDA to a wide range of metals/metal ions has offered a new class of functional metal-containing polydopamine (MPDA) nanomaterials with promising functions and extensive applications. Understanding and controlling the metal coordination environment is vital to achieve desirable functions for which such materials can be exploited. MPDA nanomaterials with metal/metal ions as the active functions are reviewed, including their synthesis and metal coordination environment and their applications in catalysis, batteries, solar cells, capacitors, medical imaging, cancer therapy, antifouling, and antibacterial coating. The current trends, limitations, and future directions of this area are also explored.

Abstract:Fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) based on polydopamine (PDA) have recently emerged as a novel fluorescent probe due to its facile synthesis procedure, good water solubility, and excellent biocompatibility. However, previously reported PDA-FONs show low monodispersity and efficiency, which largely limit their application. In this study, we report a new type of FONs that has been prepared using carbon dots (CDs) as seeds and assembled via the self-polymerization of dopamine molecules. The prepared FONs showed high efficiency and monodispersity; moreover, via controlling the time of the polymerization reaction, different FONs could be obtained, which demonstrated similar structures but with tunable emission properties, and the emission gradually evolved from blue to green with the increasing reaction time. The mechanism of the prepared FONs was confirmed to be via the Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect occuring between CDs and polymerized dopamine, leading to high efficiency and tunable emission. The FONs were also explored for cell imaging and cytotoxicity experiments, and they showed excellent biocompatibility and good prospects in biotechnological applications.

Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA) has fascinating properties such as inherent biocompatibility, simple preparation, strong near-infrared absorption, high photothermal conversion efficiency, and strong metal ion chelation, which have catalyzed extensive research in PDA-containing multifunctional nano-systems particularly for biomedical applications. Thus, it is imperative to overview synthetic strategies of various PDA-containing nanoparticles (NPs) for state-of-the-art cancer multi-mode diagnoses and therapies applications, and offer a timely and comprehensive summary. In this review, we will focus on the synthetic approaches of PDA NPs, and summarize the construction strategies of PDA-containing NPs with different structure forms. Additionally, the application of PDA-containing NPs in bioimaging such as photoacoustic imaging, fluorescence imaging, magnetic resonance imaging and other imaging modalities will be reviewed. We will especially offer an overview of their therapeutic applications in tumor chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, photocatalytic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, radionuclide therapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy and combination therapy. At the end, the current trends, limitations and future prospects of PDA-containing nano-systems will be discussed. Abstract:A facilely prepared fluorescent sensor was developed for dopamine (DA) detection with high sensitivity and selectivity based on polypyrrole/graphene quantum dots (PPy/GQDs) core/shell hybrids. The composites exhibit strong fluorescence emission, which is dramatically enhanced as high as three times than pristine GQDs. The prepared sensor allows a highly sensitive determination of DA by fluorescent intensity decreasing with the addition of DA and presents a good linearity in range of 5-8000 nM with the detection limit of 10 pM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the application of the proposed approach have been demonstrated in real samples and showed promise in diagnostic purposes.

Abstract:Taking advantages of its adhesive nature and chemical reactivity, polydopamine (PDA) has recently been integrated with plasmonic nanoparticles to yield unprecedented hybrid nanostructures. With advanced architectures and optical properties, PDA-based plasmonic nanocomposites have showcased their potential in a wide spectrum of plasmon-driven applications, ranging from catalysis, chemical sensing, to drug delivery and photothermal therapy. The rational design of PDA-based plasmonic nanocomposites entails different material features of PDA and necessitates a thorough understanding of the sophisticated PDA chemistry; yet, there is still a lack of systematic review on their fabrication strategies, plasmonic properties, and applications. In this Highlight review, we will highlight five representative types of PDA-based plsamonic nanocomposites, of which their design principles, synthetic strategies, and optical behaviors will be elucidated with an emphasis on the irreplaceable roles of PDA in the synthetic mechanisms. Together, we will outline their essential functions in diverse applications. Lastly, existing challenges and outlooks on the rational design and assembly of next-generation PDA-based plasmonic hybrid nanostructures will be presented. This Highlight review aims to provide synthetic insights and hints to inspire and aid researchers to innovate PDA-based plasmonic nanocomposites.

Herein, recent progress of PDA-modified nanoparticle drug carriers in cancer therapy, antibiosis, prevention of inflammation, theranostics, vaccine delivery and adjuvant, tissue repair and implant materials are reviewed, including preparation of PDA-modified nanoparticle drug carriers with various nanostructures and their drug loading strategies, basic roles of PDA surface modification, etc. The advantages of PDA modification in overcoming the existing limitations of cancer therapy, antibiosis, tissue repair and the developing trends in the future of PDA-modified nanoparticle drug carriers are also discussed.
