Abstract:The self-screening error in electronic structure theory is the part of the self-interaction error that would remain within the $GW$ approximation if the exact dynamically screened Coulomb interaction, $W$, were used, causing each electron to artificially screen its own presence. This introduces error into the electron density and ionization potential. We propose a simple, computationally efficient correction to $GW$ calculations in the form of a local density functional, obtained using a series of finite training systems; in tests, this eliminates the self-screening errors in the electron density and ionization potential.

Fully selfconsistent GW calculations for molecules

Abstract:We calculate single-particle excitation energies for a series of 33 molecules using fully selfconsistent GW, one-shot G$_0$W$_0$, Hartree-Fock (HF), and hybrid density functional theory (DFT). All calculations are performed within the projector augmented wave (PAW) method using a basis set of Wannier functions augmented by numerical atomic orbitals. The GW self-energy is calculated on the real frequency axis including its full frequency dependence and off-diagonal matrix elements. The mean absolute error of the ionization potential (IP) with respect to experiment is found to be 4.4, 2.6, 0.8, 0.4, and 0.5 eV for DFT-PBE, DFT-PBE0, HF, G$_0$W$_0$[HF], and selfconsistent GW, respectively. This shows that although electronic screening is weak in molecular systems its inclusion at the GW level reduces the error in the IP by up to 50% relative to unscreened HF. In general GW overscreens the HF energies leading to underestimation of the IPs. The best IPs are obtained from one-shot G$_0$W$_0$ calculations based on HF since this reduces the overscreening. Finally, we find that the inclusion of core-valence exchange is important and can affect the excitation energies by as much as 1 eV.

Abstract:Hedin's $GW$ approximation to the electronic self-energy has been impressively successful to calculate quasiparticle energies, such as ionization potentials, electron affinities, or electronic band structures. The success of this fairly simple approximation has been ascribed to the cancellation of the so-called vertex corrections that go beyond $GW$. This claim is mostly based on past calculations using vertex corrections within the crude local-density approximation. Here, we explore a wide variety of non-local vertex corrections in the polarizability and the self-energy, using first-order approximations or infinite summations to all orders. In particular, we use vertices based on statically screened interactions like in the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We demonstrate on realistic molecular systems that the two vertices in Hedin's equation essentially compensate. We further show that consistency between the two vertices is crucial to obtain realistic electronic properties. We finally consider increasingly large clusters and extrapolate that our conclusions would hold for extended systems.

Abstract:The \emph{GW} approximation takes into account electrostatic self-interaction contained in the Hartree potential through the exchange potential. However, it has been known for a long time that the approximation contains self-screening error as evident in the case of the hydrogen atom. When applied to the hydrogen atom, the \emph{GW} approximation does not yield the exact result for the electron removal spectra because of the presence of self-screening: the hole left behind is erroneously screened by the only electron in the system which is no longer present. We present a scheme to take into account self-screening and show that the removal of self-screening is equivalent to including exchange diagrams, as far as self-screening is concerned. The scheme is tested on a model hydrogen dimer and it is shown that the scheme yields the exact result to second order in $(U_{0}-U_{1})/2t$ where $U_{0}$ and $U_{1}$ are respectively the onsite and offsite Hubbard interaction parameters and $t$ the hopping parameter.

Self-screening corrections beyond the random-phase approximation: Applications to band gaps of semiconductors

Abstract:The self-screening error in the random-phase approximation (RPA) and the $GW$ approximation (GWA) is a well-known issue and has received attention in recent years with several methods for a correction being proposed. We here apply two of these, a self-screening and a so-called "self-polarization" correction scheme, to model calculations to examine their applicability. We also apply an explicit self-screening correction to \textit{ab-initio} calculations of real materials. We find indications for the self-polarization scheme to be the more appropriate choice of correction for localized states, and additionally we observe that it suffers from causality violations in the strongly correlated regime. The self-screening correction used in this work on the other hand significantly improves the description in more delocalized states. It provides a notable reduction in the remaining GWA error when calculating the band gaps of several semiconductors, indicating a physical explanation for a part of the remaining discrepancy in one-shot $GW$ compared to experiment, while leaving the localized semicore $d$ states mostly unaffected.

Abstract:The physics of electronic energy level alignment at interfaces formed between molecules and metals can in general be accurately captured by the \emph{ab initio} $GW$ approach. However, the computational cost of such $GW$ calculations for typical interfaces is significant, given their large system size and chemical complexity. In the past, approximate self-energy corrections, such as those constructed from image-charge models together with gas-phase molecular level corrections, have been used to compute level alignment with good accuracy. However, these approaches often neglect dynamical effects of the polarizability and require the definition of an image plane. In this work, we propose a new approximation to enable more efficient $GW$-quality calculations of interfaces, where we greatly simplify the calculation of the non-interacting polarizability, a primary bottleneck for large heterogeneous systems. This is achieved by first computing the non-interacting polarizability of each individual component of the interface, e.g., the molecule and the metal, without the use of large supercells; and then using folding and spatial truncation techniques to efficiently combine these quantities. Overall this approach significantly reduces the computational cost for conventional $GW$ calculations of level alignment without sacrificing the accuracy. Moreover, this approach captures both dynamical and nonlocal polarization effects without the need to invoke a classical image-charge expression or to define an image plane. We demonstrate our approach by considering a model system of benzene at relatively low coverage on aluminum (111) surface. Although developed for such interfaces, the method can be readily extended to other heterogeneous interfaces.

Two-component $GW$ calculations: Cubic scaling implementation and comparison of vertex corrected and partially self-consistent $GW$ variants

Abstract:We report an all-electron, atomic orbital (AO) based, two-component (2C) implementation of the $GW$ approximation (GWA) for closed-shell molecules. Our algorithm is based on the space-time formulation of the GWA and uses analytical continuation of the self-energy, and pair-atomic density fitting (PADF) to switch between AO and auxiliary basis. By calculating the dynamical contribution to the $GW$ self-energy at a quasi-one-component level, our 2C $GW$ algorithm is only about a factor of two to three slower than in the scalar relativistic case. Additionally, we present a 2C implementation of the simplest vertex correction to the self-energy, the statically screened $G3W2$ correction. Comparison of first ionization potentials of a set of 67 molecules with heavy elements (a subset of the SOC81 set) calculated with our implementation against results from the WEST code reveals mean absolute deviations of around 70 meV for $G_0W_0$@PBE and $G_0W_0$@PBE0. These are most likely due to technical differences in both implementations, most notably the use of different basis sets, pseudopotential approximations, different treatment of the frequency dependency of the self-energy and the choice of the 2C-Hamiltonian. Finally, we assess the performance of some (partially self-consistent) variants of the GWA for the calculation of first IPs by comparison to vertical experimental reference values. $G_0W_0$PBE0 (25 \% exact exchange) and $G_0W_0$BHLYP (50 \% exact exchange) perform best with mean absolute deviations (MAD) of about 200 meV. Eigenvalue-only self-consistent $GW$ (ev$GW$) and quasi-particle self-consistent $GW$ (qs$GW$) significantly overestimate the IPs. Perturbative $G3W2$ corrections improve the agreement with experiment in cases where $G_0W_0$ alone underestimates the IPs. With a MAD of only 140 meV, 2C-$G_0W_0$PBE0 + $G3W2$ is in best agreement with the experimental reference values.

Vacuum polarization and Wichmann-Kroll correction in the finite basis set approximation

Abstract:The finite basis set method is commonly used to calculate atomic spectra, including QED contributions such as bound-electron self-energy. Still, it remains problematic and underexplored for vacuum-polarization calculations. We fill this gap by trying this approach in its application to the calculation of the vacuum-polarization charge density and the Wichmann-Kroll correction to the electron binding energy in a hydrogen-like ion. We study the convergence of the method with different types and sizes of basis sets. We cross-check our results for the Wichmann-Kroll correction by direct integration of the Green's function. As a relevant example, we consider several heavy hydrogen-like ions and evaluate the vacuum polarization correction for $S$ and $P$ electron orbitals.

Abstract:The vertex function ($\Gamma$) within the Green's function formalism encapsulates information about all higher-order electron-electron interaction beyond those mediated by density fluctuations. Herein, we present an efficient approach that embeds vertex corrections in the one-shot $GW$ correlation self-energy for isolated and periodic systems. The vertex-corrected self-energy is constructed through the proposed separation-propagation-recombination procedure: the electronic Hilbert space is separated into an active space and its orthogonal complement denoted as the "rest"; the active component is propagated by a space-specific effective Hamiltonian different from the rest. The vertex corrections are introduced by a rescaled time-dependent non-local exchange interaction. The direct $\Gamma$ correction to the self-energy is further updated by adjusting the rescaling factor in a self-consistent post-processing circle. Our embedding method is tested mainly on donor-acceptor charge-transfer systems. The embedded vertex effects consistently and significantly correct the quasiparticle energies of the gap-edge states. The fundamental gap is generally improved by 1-3 eV upon the one-shot $GW$ approximation. Furthermore, we provide an outlook for applications of (embedded) vertex corrections in calculations of extended solids.

Fully dynamic G3W2 self-energy for finite systems: Formulas and benchmark

Abstract:Over the years, Hedin's $GW$ self-energy has been proven to be a rather accurate and simple approximation to evaluate electronic quasiparticle energies in solids and in molecules. Attempts to improve over the simple $GW$ approximation, the so-called vertex corrections, have been constantly proposed in the literature. Here, we derive, analyze, and benchmark the complete second-order term in the screened Coulomb interaction $W$ for finite systems. This self-energy named $G3W2$ contains all the possible time orderings that combine 3 Green's functions $G$ and 2 dynamic $W$. We present the analytic formula and its imaginary frequency counterpart, the latter allowing us to treat larger molecules. The accuracy of the $G3W2$ self-energy is evaluated on well-established benchmarks (GW100, Acceptor 24 and Core 65) for valence and core quasiparticle energies. Its link with the simpler static approximation, named SOSEX for static screened second-order exchange, is analyzed, which leads us to propose a more consistent approximation named 2SOSEX. In the end, we find that neither the $G3W2$ self-energy nor any of the investigated approximations to it improve over one-shot $G_0W_0$ with a good starting point. Only quasi-particle self-consistent $GW$ HOMO energies are slightly improved by addition of the $G3W2$ self-energy correction. We show that this is due to the self-consistent update of the screened Coulomb interaction leading to an overall sign change of the vertex correction to the frontier quasiparticle energies.

Combining the $Δ$-Self-Consistent-Field and GW Methods for Predicting Core Electron Binding Energies in Periodic Solids

Abstract:For the computational prediction of core electron binding energies in solids, two distinct kinds of modelling strategies have been pursued: the $\Delta$-Self-Consistent-Field method based on density functional theory (DFT), and the GW method. In this study, we examine the formal relationship between these two approaches, and establish a link between them. The link arises from the equivalence, in DFT, between the total energy difference result for the first ionization energy, and the eigenvalue of the highest occupied state, in the limit of infinite supercell size. This link allows us to introduce a new formalism, which highlights how in DFT - even if the total energy difference method is used to calculate core electron binding energies - the accuracy of the results still implicitly depends on the accuracy of the eigenvalue at the valence band maximum in insulators, or at the Fermi level in metals. We examine, whether incorporating a quasiparticle correction for this eigenvalue from GW theory improves the accuracy of the calculated core electron binding energies, and find that the inclusion of vertex corrections is required for achieving quantitative agreement with experiment.

A geometrical correction for the inter- and intra-molecular basis set superposition error in Hartree-Fock and density functional theory calculations for large systems

Abstract:A semi-empirical counterpoise-type correction for basis set superposition error (BSSE) in molecular systems is presented. An atom pair-wise potential corrects for the inter- and intra-molecular BSSE in supermolecular Hartree-Fock (HF) or density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This geometrical counterpoise (gCP) denoted scheme depends only on the molecular geometry, i.e., no input from the electronic wave-function is required and hence is applicable to molecules with ten thousands of atoms. The four necessary parameters have been determined by a fit to standard Boys and Bernadi counterpoise corrections for Hobza's S66×8 set of non-covalently bound complexes (528 data points). The method's target are small basis sets (e.g., minimal, split-valence, 6-31G*), but reliable results are also obtained for larger triple-ζ sets. The intermolecular BSSE is calculated by gCP within a typical error of 10%-30% that proves sufficient in many practical applications. The approach is suggested as a quantitative correction in production work and can also be routinely applied to estimate the magnitude of the BSSE beforehand. The applicability for biomolecules as the primary target is tested for the crambin protein, where gCP removes intramolecular BSSE effectively and yields conformational energies comparable to def2-TZVP basis results. Good mutual agreement is also found with Jensen's ACP(4) scheme, estimating the intramolecular BSSE in the phenylalanine-glycine-phenylalanine tripeptide, for which also a relaxed rotational energy profile is presented. A variety of minimal and double-ζ basis sets combined with gCP and the dispersion corrections DFT-D3 and DFT-NL are successfully benchmarked on the S22 and S66 sets of non-covalent interactions. Outstanding performance with a mean absolute deviation (MAD) of 0.51 kcal/mol (0.38 kcal/mol after D3-refit) is obtained at the gCP-corrected HF-D3/(minimal basis) level for the S66 benchmark. The gCP-corrected B3LYP-D3/6-31G* model chemistry yields MAD=0.68 kcal/mol, which represents a huge improvement over plain B3LYP/6-31G* (MAD=2.3 kcal/mol). Application of gCP-corrected B97-D3 and HF-D3 on a set of large protein-ligand complexes prove the robustness of the method. Analytical gCP gradients make optimizations of large systems feasible with small basis sets, as demonstrated for the inter-ring distances of 9-helicene and most of the complexes in Hobza's S22 test set. The method is implemented in a freely available FORTRAN program obtainable from the author's website.

These approaches are tested on benchmark data sets covering full valence spectra (first ionization potentials and some inner valence shell excitations). For small molecules, when comparing against state of the art wave function techniques, our results show that performing full self-consistency in the GW scheme either systematically outperforms vertex corrected G0W0 or gives results of at least the same quality. Moreover, the G0W0{\Gamma} results in additional computational cost when compared to G0W0 or self-consistent GW and the G0W0{\Gamma} dependency on the starting mean-filed solution is frequently larger than the magnitude of the vertex correction. Consequently, for molecular systems self-consistent GW performed on imaginary axis and then followed by modern analytical continuation techniques offers a more reliable approach to make predictions of IP spectra.

Abstract:Ab initio GW calculations are a standard method for computing the spectroscopic properties of many materials. The most computationally expensive part in conventional implementations of the method is the generation and summation over the large number of empty orbitals required to converge the electron self energy. We propose a scheme to reduce the summation over empty states by the use of a modified static-remainder approximation, which is simple to implement and yields accurate self energies for both bulk and molecular systems requiring a small fraction of the typical number of empty orbitals.

Abstract:Ionization potential and electron affinity are essential molecular properties. The most straightforward method is to calculate them by taking the total energy differences of the initial and final states according to the definition. However, it often suffers from a serious convergence problem due to the requirement of the self-consistent field (SCF) calculations for the ionic states with non-Aufbau choices of occupations. In the present work, we have constructed a theoretical framework in view of perturbation theory to bypass the SCF calculations of the ionic states. To address the imbalance issue that arises from the precisely treated neutral ground state followed by the truncated perturbative treatment of the ionic states, an accurate yet effective method has been developed here, which adds back some terms from the higher order perturbations into the lower order to cancel out the most computationally cost terms in the truncated expansion, thus reaching a better convergence with less computation. The validity of the present methodology has been tested out by applying it to the Hartree-Fock (HF) method in combination with the correlation effect described at the second-order Møller-Plesset level in a frozen-orbital approximation. All the derivations in this work are given in a general framework, which are applicable not only to HF but also to a wide range of density functional theory methods from semi-local functionals to hybrid and doubly hybrid functionals.
