Abstract:According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is defined as a mean systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mm Hg and/or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mm Hg, or the self-reported use of antihypertensive medication. 1 These diagnostic criteria are widely used for adults in China. The global epidemiology of hypertension in both men and women has doubled over the last 30 years. 2 The American Heart Association predicts that an estimated 23.6 million individuals globally will die from hypertension and its complications by 2030. 3 In China, elderly people (adults 60 years and older) have been reported to have a prevalence of hypertension that exceeds 50% due to population aging. 4 However, the proportion of patients in which hypertension was controlled was only 7.81%. 5 Uncontrolled hypertension is characterized by frequently occurring adverse cardiovascular events, including heart failure, shock, and hypertension kidney disease. 5 These phenomena are more severe in elderly people and can create a serious threat to their health and a huge economic burden on medical expenditure. 6 According to previous research, approximately 4.24% of total treatment costs were caused by hypertension. 6 Furthermore, hypertension was responsible for 2.54 million fatalities and more than 5% of disability-adjusted life years in China. 7 Thus, the high prevalence and medical burden of hypertension against the background of population aging have become significant public health concerns in both China and the rest of the world.
