Abstract:Amphiphilic blue-fluorescence carbon dots (B-CDs) were synthesized via pyrolysis method with citric acid and oleamine as precursors. B-CDs are monodispersed in ethanol, toluene, and ultrapure water with the average particle sizes of 3.33 nm, 2.05 nm, and 4.12 nm, respectively. The maximum emission wavelength of the B-CDs excitation at 370 nm is located at 459 nm. The B-CDs have good optical properties with excellent photostability. The fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of the as-prepared CDs is as high as 30.17%. The fluorescence of B-CDs is quenched because of static quenching by oxytetracycline. A high selective and sensitive fluorescence probe for detecting oxytetracycline was constructed with a linear range of 1.52-27.60 µg/mL and the detection limit of 0.33 µg/mL. The B-CDs-based fluorescence probe can be applied to analyze oxytetracycline in milk; the recoveries and relative standard are satisfactory. Furthermore, the B-CDs were exploited for imaging of SH-SY5Y cells. The results demonstrate that as-synthesized CDs can serve as a cellular imaging reagent owing to remarkable bioimaging performance. This work provides a new strategy for the detection of oxytetracycline in food.

Abstract:<p>A carbon dot (CD)-based fluorometric probe for oxytetracycline (OTC) detection utilizing a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism was firstly developed. Upon addition of OTC, the blue fluorescence of the CDs peaked at 405 nm was quickly quenched, with a new fluorescence peaked at 505 nm attributed to OTC was observed within 30 s. A visual fluorescent color change of the CDs solution from blue to green was discerned under a 365 nm UV light irradiation. The CDs displayed a high sensitivity and selectivity toward OTC with a low detection limit of 0.41 μM. Furthermore, the probe was applied to detect OTC in water, milk, and pork samples with a satisfied recovery.</p>

Abstract:A novel fluorescent probe based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) coupled with N-doped carbon dots (CDs) was prepared and used for specific recognition and sensitive determination of tetracycline (TC). N-doped CDs were synthesized using citric acid as a carbon source and ethylenediamine as a nitrogen source by a microwave assisted pyrolysis method. The determination conditions such as the solvents, material amount, pH value, and temperature were optimized. The CDs-MIPs have the best quenching on TC in water. The proposed method used for TC determination in milk powder samples had a detection limit of 0.054 μg mL −1 and a wide range of 0.5–30 μg mL −1 . Meanwhile, satisfactory recoveries were obtained ranging from 95 to 108%. Oxytetracycline, chlorotetracycline and most of the coexisting substances showed no obvious interference indicating that the CDs-MIP probe exhibited high selectivity due to the presence of imprinted sites. Charge transfer from CDs-MIPs to TC may be through the mechanism of fluorescence quenching. This work gives a feasible strategy for the synthesis of N-doped carbon dot based molecularly imprinted polymers used as a fluorescent sensor in the food analysis field.

Abstract:Tetracyclines residues, particularly oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC), have raised extensive concern because of their serious adverse effects on human health. Herein, a dual-response fluorescent probe based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and Eu3+ hybrid (N-CDs-Eu3+) was developed to selectively determine OTC and TC. The N-CDs act as ancillary ligands of Eu3+ and recognition units of OTC/TC, while the Eu3+ ions chelated with N-CDs can also specifically recognize OTC/TC. Upon inclusion of OTC/TC, an enhancement in Eu3+ emission occurs due to the energy transfer from OTC/TC to Eu3+ and the efficient elimination of quenching effect caused by H2O molecule, which is attributed to the incorporation of N-CDs; while the blue fluorescence emitted by the N-CDs decreases under the inner filter effect and static quenching effect caused by OTC/TC. Based on the double and reverse response signals, the ratiometric detection of OTC and TC in the range of 0.1-45 μΜ and 0.1-30 μΜ is achieved with a detection limit of 0.017 and 0.041 μM, respectively. In addition, the noticeable variation in fluorescence color of the probe is integrated with a smartphone-assisted analysis device for the rapid on-site quantitative assay of OTC, where the detection limit is 0.15 μΜ. The results show that this probe performs with excellent specificity and anti-interference for both OTC and TC, and satisfactory detection results are obtained in lake water, milk, and honey samples, thereby confirming that the probe exhibits promising application in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Developing sensitive and effective methods to monitor oxytetracycline residues in food is of great significance for maintaining public health. Herein, a fluorescent sensor (NH2-UIO-66 (Zr)@MIP) based on a molecularly imprinted polymer-coated amino-functionalized zirconium (IV) metal–organic framework was successfully constructed and first used for the ultrasensitive determination of oxytetracycline. NH2-UIO-66 (Zr), with a maximum emission wavelength of 455 nm under 350 nm excitation, was prepared using a microwave-assisted heating method. The NH2-UIO-66 (Zr)@MIP sensor with specific recognition sites for oxytetracycline was then acquired by modifying a molecularly imprinted polymer on the surface of NH2-UIO-66 (Zr). The introduction of NH2-UIO-66 (Zr) as both a signal tag and supporter can strengthen the sensitivity of the fluorescence sensor. Thanks to the combination of the unique characteristics of the molecularly imprinted polymer and NH2-UIO-66 (Zr), the prepared sensor not only exhibited a sensitive fluorescence response, specific identification capabilities and a high selectivity for oxytetracycline, but also showed good fluorescence stability, satisfactory precision and reproducibility. The fabricated sensor displayed a fluorescent linear quenching in the OTC concentration range of 0.05–40 μg mL−1, with a detection limit of 0.012 μg mL−1. More importantly, the fluorescence sensor was finally applied for the detection of oxytetracycline in milk, and the results were comparable to those obtained using the HPLC approach. Hence, the NH2-UIO-66 (Zr)@MIP sensor possesses great application potential for the accurate evaluation of trace oxytetracycline in dairy products.

Abstract:We report herein a "turn off-on" fluorescent sensor based on ZnCdSe quantum dots (ZnCdSe QDs) and self-assembled zinc porphyrin for sensitive and rapid detection of ochratoxin A (OTA). Using environmentally friendly dodecyl dimethyl betaine as "soft template", zinc 5, 10, 15, 20-tetra(4-pyridyl)-21H-23H-porphine (ZnTPyP) was self-assembled into nanorods (SA-ZnTPyP) through a green process. The OTA detection process involves two steps: (1) the fluorescence of ZnCdSe QDs is significantly quenched by SA-ZnTPyP, and (2) the combination between SA-ZnTPyP and OTA releases ZnCdSe QDs from their quenchers such that the fluorescence is recovered. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the newly developed fluorescent sensor showed a linear response in concentration range 0.5-80 ng mL(-1), with a detection limit of 0.33 ng mL(-1). The excellent applicability of the system has been verified in milk and coffee samples, with relative recoveries between 98.33% and 103.70%. The proposed fluorescent sensor exhibits excellent selectivity and high sensitivity, and thus could be a promising tool for on-site determination of OTA in food safety control and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Rampant use of tetracycline in animal feed is a threat to food security, the environment, and human health because of the risk of drug residues. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a sensitive, efficient, and reliable method for qualitative and quantitative detection of tetracycline. In this paper, we synthesized fluorescent carbon dots (FCDs) by thermal cracking of crab shell waste, and obtained a fluorescence quantum yield of 30%. Characterization of the FCDs by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy showed that they were fluorescent and evenly distributed with an average size of approximately 10 nm. We designed a sensitive probe for detecting tetracycline using the fluorescence intensity change of the FCDs. This method is sensitive, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. The concentration of tetracycline was examined by comparing the fluorescence intensities of the FCDs before and after tetracycline addition. The limit of detection for tetracycline was 0.005 mg/L (signal-to-noise ratio = 3), which is promising for method development.

Abstract:The widespread presence of tetracyclines in the environment has raised concerns about the potential risks to ecosystems and human health. The ratiometric fluorescence sensor for detecting tetracyclines was developed using europium-doped carbon dots (Eu-CDs) as probes under alkaline conditions. The sensing mechanism of sensor for tetracyclines was considered as inner filter effect (IFE), antenna effect (AE), and self-quenching effect (SQE). The sensor had a wide linear detection range than the reported europium ions-based tetracyclines sensors. The linear detection ranges of oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), doxycycline (DC) and chlorotetracycline (CTC) were respectively 0.00–603.75 μM, 0.00–623.82 μM, 0.00–594.61 μM and 0.00–601.54 μM, and the corresponding detection limits were respectively 9.50 nM, 15.80 nM, 10.4 nM and 90.3 nM. The smartphone with RGB Color Picker was further employed to analyze the concentration of tetracyclines, which provided a new method for visual tetracyclines detection. The application of Eu-CDs test paper was also explored, and the results showed that the Eu-CDs test paper has great potential application in the visual detection of tetracyclines. In addition, the accuracy of the established tetracyclines sensor was compared with that of the China national standard method by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the results showed that the established method in this work has similar accuracy to the China national standard method. The sensor has been employed to detect tetracyclines in the actual samples with satisfactory results, which indicated that this method has promising applications in the real-time monitoring tetracyclines of food and environment.

Abstract:This work synthesized the ethylenediamine-doped puffer fish skin carbon dots using biomass as a green precursor. Three tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) were detected fluorescence and colorimetrically using carbon dots as probes; on this basis, hydrogels were used to carry out visual identification and quantification. In the presence of TCs, the nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) displayed a quenching impact on fluorescence because of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), dynamic quenching, and band gap transition. As a result, it was possible to identify the precise concentrations of tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline (CTC). The assay has great biocompatibility, which was supported by cytotoxicity, a wide linear range (0.5–500 M), a low detection limit (0.15 M), and outstanding selectivity. With a high recovery rate, the approach has been successfully used to identify TCs in food and water samples such milk, honey, and tap water.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) residues not only endanger human health, but also are detrimental to the sustainable development of aquaculture and animal husbandry. Herein, a novel fluorescence sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity was developed based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots embedded in zinc-based metal-organic frameworks and incorporating molecularly imprinted polymer (ZIF-8&N-CDs@MIP). The physical and chemical properties of the ZIF-8&N-CDs@MIP had been characterized by SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, BET, TGA, etc. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) of the novel sensor was 0.045 μg mL-1 with the concentration of TC in the range of 0.1-4.0 μg mL-1. In addition, the prepared imprinted polymers showed superior adsorption selectivity to tetracycline compared with non-imprinted polymers, and the quenching mechanism of ZIF-8&N-CDs@MIP was demonstrated to be attributed to the inner filter effect (IFE). This work provided an effective and reliable method for the specific detection of tetracycline and was successfully applied in milk and egg samples with satisfactory recoveries (80.67-95.22%).
Amino-functionalized Al-MOF modulated TpTt-COF with dual-emission for fluorescent and optosmart detecting tetracycline in food samples

Abstract:Tetracycline residues in animal-derived food pose serious harm to human health, making it demanded to develop simple and sensitive method for detecting tetracycline. Herein, a dual-emission synchronous response fluorescence probe is reported based on amino-functionalized Al-MOF modulated TpTt-COF (donate as NMT). NMT exhibits excellent dual-emission at 455 and 575 nm under single excitation. Tetracycline is sensitively detected through quenching the dual-emission of NMT. NMT specifically recognizes tetracycline through intermolecular hydrogen bonding between -OH/-NH2 of tetracycline and deprotonated O-/-NH-/CN of NMT. A calibration curve is built between the fluorescence ratio and the tetracycline concentration with a detection limit of 0.014 μmol/L. NMT is employed to detect tetracycline in milk, pork and chicken, and displays satisfactory recoveries of 94.39-105.67%, respectively. The optosmart sensor based on NMT and smartphone has been constructed for visually detecting tetracycline. This method provides routes to construct MOF-COF fluorescence probes and has good prospects in food analysis.

Abstract:A fluorescence probe based on iron oxide quantum dots (IO-QDs) was synthesized using the hydrothermal method for the determination of tetracycline (TCy) and ciprofloxacin (CPx) in aqueous solution. The IO-QDs were characterized using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The as-prepared IO-QDs are fluorescent, stable, and with a fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 9.8 ± 0.12%. The fluorescence of IO-QDs was observed to be quenched and enhanced in the presence of TCy and CPx, respectively. The fluorescence intensity ratio shows linearity at concentrations from 1–100 μM and 5–100 μM for TCy and CPx, respectively; the detection limit for TCy and CPx was estimated to be 0.71 μM and 1.56 μM, respectively. The proposed method was also successfully utilized in the spiked samples of drinking water and honey with good recoveries. The method offered convenience, rapid detection, high sensitivity, selectivity, and cost-efficient alternative options for the determination of TCy and CPx in real samples.

Abstract:Since oxytetracycline (OTC) residues in foodstuff are very harmful to human health, it is urgent to develop an effective assay to monitor OTC. Herein, an innovative fluorescent biomimetic sensor (Ce, N-CDs@ZIF-67@MIP) based on cerium, nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (Ce, N-CDs) embedded in cobalt-based metal organic framework (ZIF-67) combining with molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was triumphantly fabricated by a simple one-pot strategy and subsequently applied for the selective and sensitive detection of OTC. In this strategy, the modification of the surface imprint layer enabled the sensor to possess favorable anti-interference ability and specific recognition performance for OTC. The introduction of ZIF-67 with large specific surface area functioning as supporter significantly increased the mass transfer rate and shortened the response time, which improved the adsorption performance and detection sensitivity of Ce, N-CDs@ZIF-67@MIP. Meanwhile, the Ce, N-CDs featured with bright blue fluorescence (FL) and high fluorescence quantum yield (FLQY, 33.69%) were incorporated as a signal label to make the sensor generate measurable FL response signal according to the inner filter effect (IFE), achieving signal amplification. Thanks to the integrated merits of MIP, ZIF-67 and Ce, N-CDs, the constructed Ce, N-CDs@ZIF-67@MIP sensor not only displayed a favorable linear range (0.05–20 μg mL−1) with a low detection limit (0.015 μg mL−1), but also showed good precision and reproducibility (RSD). More importantly, the designed sensor was successfully used to quantitatively analyze OTC in milk samples, and the corresponding results were in accordance with those obtained by HPLC method. Therefore, the proposed Ce, N-CDs@ZIF-67@MIP sensor is expected to provide an efficient and sensitive FL detection platform for OTC evaluation in dairy products.

Abstract:In this work, a rapid, specific, and visual ratiometric fluorescence probe was constructed for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) determination based on zinc-doped carbon quantum dots (Zn-CDs). In the presence of TCH, the blue fluorescence at 440 nm originating from Zn-CDs was quenched, and the green fluorescence at 515 nm stemming from TCH was enhanced. The inner filter effect (IFE) and the chelation between Zn and tetracycline are the main mechanisms for the conversion of spectra. The spectrum and color change completed and stabilized within 1 min, indicating the possibility of real-time detection of TCH. The detection range for TCH is 0.1–50 μM, and the low detection limit is 61.1 nM. In addition, Zn-CDs-based test strips were successfully applied to direct visual identification of TCH in actual samples of river water and milk, indicating the possibility of their practical application.

Abstract:Excessive antibiotic residues increased the environmental damage and safety of animal products, leading to serious health threats. In this study, a dual-mode probe was developed and applied as an electrochemical/fluorescence sensor for tetracycline (TET) detection. The probe, comprising a fluorescent covalent organic framework , electroactive methylene blue, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and single-stranded DNA, was synthesized by self-assembly. A glassy carbon electrode was functionalized with molybdenum disulfide nanosheets , AuNPs, and aptamers. The probe exhibited fluorescent signals in solution and electrochemical signals after being specifically connected to the electrode via hybridization. In the presence of TET, the probe is be competitively expelled from the modified electrode, resulting in an increase in the fluorescent signal and a decrease in the electrochemical signal. The developed electrochemical/fluorescence dual-mode sensor enabled sensitive TET detection in the concentration range of 10 nM–10 mM, with minimum detection limits of 0.03 nM (electrochemical) and 0.05 nM (fluorescence). With its high selectivity, superior reproducibility, and excellent stability, the proposed dual-mode sensor demonstrates high reliability, and excellent application prospects for TET detection in milk and river water samples.

The MoS2 QDs, synthesized through an uncomplicated one-step hydrothermal approach, upon OTC integration into the MoS2 QDs/Eu3+ sensing system, exhibit a significant quenching of blue fluorescence due to the inner filter effect (IFE), simultaneously enhancing the distinct red emission of Eu3+ at 624 nm, a phenomenon attributed to the antenna effect (AE). This sensor demonstrates exceptional selectivity and sensitivity towards OTC, characterized by a linear detection range of 0.2-10 μM and a notably low detection limit of 2.21 nM. Furthermore, we achieved a visual semi-quantitative assessment of OTC through the discernible fluorescence color transition from blue to red under a 365 nm ultraviolet lamp. The practical applicability of this sensor was validated through the successful detection of OTC in milk and mutton samples, underscoring its potential as a robust tool for OTC monitoring in foodstuffs to safeguard food safety.

Abstract:Concerns about environmental and food contamination caused by chlortetracycline (CTC) residues have prompted people to explore efficient and convenient CTC monitoring platforms. However, the reported fluorescent probes generally fail to selectively detect CTC due to the structural similarity of tetracycline antibiotics. Herein, an intrinsic dual-emission carbon dots (D-CDs) ratiometric fluorescence sensor was prepared for highly sensitive and selective determination of CTC over other tetracyclines by one-step synthesis. The sensor exhibited a significant fluorescence enhancement at 425 nm after introducing CTC. The fluorescence "turn on" of the sensing system is due to aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon formed by hydrogen bonds and π conjugation promoting the specific recognition of CTC by D-CDs. The linear detection varied from 0.98 to 143.67 ng mL −1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.29 ng mL −1 ( R 2 = 0.998), which was lower than most reported in the literature. The D-CDs sensor was applied to detect CTC in spiked milk, blocked normal human serum, and fish samples with recoveries of 95.5–104.2% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.6%. Particularly, D-CDs based test papers with a smartphone were prepared for portable and visual detection of CTC by analyzing the various color changes of RGB of fluorescence color, with an LOD of 7.18 ng mL −1 ( R 2 = 0.9909). The fluorescence sensor designed in this work could be used as a rapid tool with high performance and selectivity for monitoring control in foods.

Abstract:In this work, copper-doped zinc sulfide quantum dots (ZnS:Cu QDs) were developed as ratiometric fluorescent probes to detect tetracycline (TC) in milk. With the increasing of TC concentration, the fluorescence at 578 nm of ZnS:Cu QDs was quenched, while a new fluorescence at 520 nm was significantly enhanced due to the formation of a green-emitting complex of Zn2+ and TC on the surface of probes. The fluorescence intensity ratio (I520/I578) have a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.98) with the concentration of TC in the range of 0.2-2.0 μM. The detection limit was calculated to 149 nM, which is lower than the allowable level of TC (about 180 μM) in milk set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Finally, the fluorescent test papers have been also prepared using ZnS:Cu QDs as ink by painting on a piece of filter paper. With the addition of TC, the orange test paper produced green spots that became more and more obvious with a dose-discerning ability as low as 2 μM. This work demonstrated a great potential of ratiometric fluorescent probe for the easy and visual detection of TC in complicated real samples.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) with blue fluorescence were synthesized through hydrothermal treatment of p-dihydroxybenzene and hydrazine hydrate. The fluorescence of the investigated CDs could be selectively quenched by iron ions (Fe3+) because of the strong metal-ligand coordination and electrostatic interactions between the large amount of hydroxyl, amino, and carboxyl groups on CDs' surface and Fe3+. Interestingly, this non-fluorescent CDs + Fe3+ complex displayed a sensitive and selective turn-on fluorescence toward ampicillin with a limit of detection of 0.70 mu M. The sensing process could be observed by naked eyes under the 365 nm UV light irradiation. Importantly, CDs + Fe3+ complex had been successfully applied in the detection of ampicillin in river water.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TET) is one of the common antibiotics used in animal husbandry. However, the long-term consumption of TET may increase the risks for human health, especial in dairy products. Moreover, after entering the human body, TET is difficult to be absorbed by the intestines and stomach, and will be discharged into the sewage in the form of the parent compound, which will cause irreversible damage to the natural environment. Novel nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) nanoparticles were successfully fabricated using in situ hydrothermal reaction on the inner surface of the aminated central radial silica spheres (CRSSs-NH2), called CRSSs-NH2@N-CDs. The aminated central radial carrier played a role in protecting and stabilizing N-CDs, thus enhancing it fluorescence and realizing solid-state light emission. The results shown that the optimal excitation wavelength of CRSSs-NH2@N-CDs was about 365 nm, and the emission wavelength was about 446 nm. The CRSSs-NH2@N-CDs was then used as a fluorescent probe for rapidly detecting TET. With optimized experimental conditions, the fluorescence quenching intensity of CRSSs-NH2@N-CDs had a good linear relationship with the concentration of TET. The linear detection range was 0.5–60 μM, and the limit of detection is 0.39 μM. Furthermore, the TET-sensing application in milk has been carried out, and the average recovery range is 91.90%–104.70%.
