Abstract:It is well-known that the two-parameter Mittag-Leffler (ML) function plays a key role in Fractional Calculus. In this paper, we address the problem of computing this function, when its argument is a square matrix. Effective methods for solving this problem involve the computation of higher order derivatives or require the use of mixed precision arithmetic. In this paper, we provide an alternative method that is derivative-free and works entirely using IEEE standard double precision arithmetic. If certain conditions are satisfied, our method uses a Taylor series representation for the ML function; if not, it switches to a Schur-Parlett technique that will be combined with the Cauchy integral formula. A detailed discussion on the choice of a convenient contour is included. Theoretical and numerical issues regarding the performance of the proposed algorithm are discussed. A set of numerical experiments shows that our novel approach is competitive with the state-of-the-art method for IEEE double precision arithmetic, in terms of accuracy and CPU time. For matrices whose Schur decomposition has large blocks with clustered eigenvalues, our method far outperforms the other. Since our method does not require the efficient computation of higher order derivatives, it has the additional advantage of being easily extended to other matrix functions (e.g., special functions).

Abstract:The computation of the Mittag-Leffler (ML) function with matrix arguments, and some applications in fractional calculus, are discussed. In general the evaluation of a scalar function in matrix arguments may require the computation of derivatives of possible high order depending on the matrix spectrum. Regarding the ML function, the numerical computation of its derivatives of arbitrary order is a completely unexplored topic; in this paper we address this issue and three different methods are tailored and investigated. The methods are combined together with an original derivatives balancing technique in order to devise an algorithm capable of providing high accuracy. The conditioning of the evaluation of matrix ML functions is also studied. The numerical experiments presented in the paper show that the proposed algorithm provides high accuracy, very often close to the machine precision.

Abstract:Abstract The Mittag–Leffler function (MLF) plays an important role in many applications of fractional calculus, establishing a connection between exponential and power law behaviors that characterize integer and fractional order phenomena, respectively. Nevertheless, the numerical computation of the MLF poses problems both of accuracy and convergence. In this paper, we study the calculation of the 2-parameter MLF by using polynomial computation and integral formulas. For the particular cases having Laplace transform (LT) the method relies on the inversion of the LT using the fast Fourier transform. Experiments with two other available methods compare also the computational time and accuracy. The 3-parameter MLF and its calculation are also considered.

Abstract:The study of matrix functions is highly significant and has important applications in control theory, quantum mechanics, signal processing, and machine learning. Previous work has mainly focused on how to use the Krylov-type method to efficiently calculate matrix functions f(A)β and βTf(A)β when A is symmetric. In this paper, we mainly illustrate the convergence using the polynomial approximation theory for the case where A is symmetric positive definite. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

Abstract:We address the practical issue that popular computation platforms like Matlab $$^{\copyright }$$ are unable to perform the Jordan normal (canonical) form J and the associated transform matrix P on a high-dimension matrix. Given the knowledge of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of n-square matrix A obtained on these platforms, we present an efficient algorithm of Jordan transform with detailed computation steps. The efficiency is demonstrated by comparing the simulation results of 11 examples with varying orders of n to that computed by the symbolic-based and capacity-limited routine $$[P, J] = {\textsf {jordan}}(A)$$ in Matlab $$^{\copyright }$$ . Applications in stochastic dynamics are addressed.

Abstract:We discuss the use of a matrix‐oriented approach for numerically solving the dense matrix equation AX + XAT + M1XN1 + … + MℓXNℓ = F, with ℓ ≥ 1, and Mi, Ni, i = 1, … , ℓ of low rank. The approach relies on the Sherman–Morrison–Woodbury formula formally defined in the vectorized form of the problem, but applied in the matrix setting. This allows one to solve medium size dense problems with computational costs and memory requirements dramatically lower than with a Kronecker formulation. Application problems leading to medium size equations of this form are illustrated and the performance of the matrix‐oriented method is reported. The application of the procedure as the core step in the solution of the large‐scale problem is also shown. In addition, a new explicit method for linear tensor equations is proposed, that uses the discussed matrix equation procedure as a key building block.

Computing Functions of Symmetric Hierarchically Semiseparable Matrices

Abstract:The aim of this work is to develop a fast algorithm for approximating the matrix function $f(A)$ of a square matrix $A$ that is symmetric and has hierarchically semiseparable (HSS) structure. Appearing in a wide variety of applications, often in the context of discretized (fractional) differential and integral operators, HSS matrices have a number of attractive properties facilitating the development of fast algorithms. In this work, we use an unconventional telescopic decomposition of $A$, inspired by recent work of Levitt and Martinsson on approximating an HSS matrix from matrix-vector products with a few random vectors. This telescopic decomposition allows us to approximate $f(A)$ by recursively performing low-rank updates with rational Krylov subspaces while keeping the size of the matrices involved in the rational Krylov subspaces small. In particular, no large-scale linear system needs to be solved, which yields favorable complexity estimates and reduced execution times compared to existing methods, including an existing divide-and-conquer strategy. The advantages of our newly proposed algorithms are demonstrated for a number of examples from the literature, featuring the exponential, the inverse square root, and the sign function of a matrix. Even for matrix inversion, our algorithm exhibits superior performance, even if not specifically designed for this task.

Computation of the exponential function of matrices by a formula without oscillatory integrals on infinite intervals

Abstract:We propose a quadrature-based formula for computing the exponential function of matrices with a non-oscillatory integral on an infinite interval and an oscillatory integral on a finite interval. In the literature, existing quadrature-based formulas are based on the inverse Laplace transform or the Fourier transform. We show these expressions are essentially equivalent in terms of complex integrals and choose the former as a starting point to reduce computational cost. By choosing a simple integral path, we derive an integral expression mentioned above. Then, we can easily apply the double-exponential formula and the Gauss-Legendre formula, which have rigorous error bounds. As numerical experiments show, the proposed formula outperforms the existing formulas when the imaginary parts of the eigenvalues of matrices have large absolute values.

Rational Approximations for Oscillatory Two-Parameter Mittag-Leffler Function

Abstract:The two-parameter Mittag-Leffler function $E_{\alpha, \beta}$ is of fundamental importance in fractional calculus. It appears frequently in the solutions of fractional differential and integral equations. Nonetheless, this vital function is often expensive to compute. Several attempts have been made to construct cost-effective and accurate approximations. These attempts focus mainly on the completely monotone Mittag-Leffler functions. However, when $\alpha > 1$ the monotonicity property is largely lost and as such roots and oscillations are exhibited. Consequently, existing approximants constructed mainly for $\alpha \in (0,1)$ often fail to capture this oscillatory behavior. In this paper, we construct computationally efficient and accurate rational approximants for $E_{\alpha, \beta}(-t)$, $t \ge 0$, with $\alpha \in (1,2)$. This construction is fundamentally based on the decomposition of Mittag-Leffler function with real roots into one without and a polynomial. Following which new approximants are constructed by combining the global Padé approximation with a polynomial of appropriate degree. The rational approximants are extended to approximation of matrix Mittag-Leffler and different approaches to achieve efficient implementation for matrix arguments are discussed. Numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the significant accuracy improvement achieved by the proposed approximants.

Abstract:Inverse Vandermonde matrix calculation is a long-standing problem to solve nonsingular linear system $Vc=b$ where the rows of a square matrix $V$ are constructed by progression of the power polynomials. It has many applications in scientific computing including interpolation, super-resolution, and construction of special matrices applied in cryptography. Despite its numerous applications, the matrix is highly ill-conditioned where specialized treatments are considered for approximation such as conversion to Cauchy matrix, spectral decomposition, and algorithmic tailoring of the numerical solutions. In this paper, we propose a generalized algorithm that takes arbitrary pairwise (non-repetitive) sample nodes for solving inverse Vandermonde matrix. This is done in two steps: first, a highly balanced recursive algorithm is introduced with $\mathcal{O}(N)$ complexity to solve the combinatorics summation of the elementary symmetric polynomials; and second, a closed-form solution is tailored for inverse Vandermonde where the matrix' elements utilize this recursive summation for the inverse calculations. The numerical stability and accuracy of the proposed inverse method is analyzed through the spectral decomposition of the Frobenius companion matrix that associates with the corresponding Vandermonde matrix. The results show significant improvement over the state-of-the-art solutions using specific nodes such as $N$th roots of unity defined on the complex plane. A basic application in one dimensional interpolation problem is considered to demonstrate the utility of the proposed method for super-resolved signals.

The resulting computational complexity for $N\times N$ matrices can be estimated from recursive equation $T(N)=4(N/2)^2$ (multiplication of a matrix by number)+$4(N/2)^2$ (additions of matrices)+$2N^2$ (floor and modulo)+$4T(N/2)$ (recursive calls) as $O(N^2log_2N)$. The novelty of the method lies in the observation, somehow ignored by other matrix-by-matrix multiplication algorithms, that we can multiply matrix entries by non-integer numbers to improve computational complexity. In other words, while having a processor that can compute multiplications, additions, modulo and floor operations with variable precision arithmetic in $O(1)$, we can obtain a matrix-by-matrix multiplication algorithm with $O(N^2log_2N)$ computational complexity. We also present a MATLAB code using VPA variable precision arithmetic emulator that can multiply matrices of size $N\times N$ using $(4log_2N+1)N^2$ variable precision arithmetic operations. This emulator uses $O(N)$ digits to run our algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, a delayed discrete Mittag-Leffler matrix function generated by two noncommutative square matrices is introduced. Utilizing this function, the paper establishes an explicit expression for solving constant delay fractional difference systems. Additionally, a criterion for determining the Ulam-Hyers stability of delay fractional difference systems with constant coefficients is derived using the aforementioned explicit representation formula.

Splitting Methods for Computing Matrix Functions (Elements) Based on Non-Zero Diagonals Positions

Abstract:In applications, we often need to compute functions of matrices, such as banded matrices, the Kronecker sum of banded matrices, Toeplitz matrices, and many other types, which all share the common feature that their non-zero elements are concentrated around certain diagonals. We approximate matrix functions by considering the positions of non-zero diagonals in the original matrix. Focusing on non-zero diagonals provides us with simple algorithms to be used as tools to reduce complexity of other algorithms for computing matrix functions. Here, we first establish a decay bound for elements of matrix functions using the non-zero diagonals. Then, we develop methods that involve dividing the problem of computing matrix functions into functions of some submatrices of the original matrix. The size of these submatrices depends on the positions and number of non-zero diagonals in a monomial of the original matrix, ranging from degree zero to a given degree. For Toeplitz matrices, we demonstrate that our method turns to a simpler algorithm and works more efficiently. The convergence analysis of our proposed methods is conducted by establishing connections to the best polynomial approximation. When only specific elements or the trace of matrix functions are required, we derive submatrices from the original matrix based solely on the indices of the elements of interest. Additionally, for the special case of banded-symmetric Toeplitz matrices, we derive an approximation for elements of matrix functions with geometrically reducing error, using closed-form formulas that depend solely on the indices of the elements.

Computing a compact local Smith McMillan form

Abstract:We define a compact local Smith-McMillan form of a rational matrix $R(\lambda)$ as the diagonal matrix whose diagonal elements are the nonzero entries of a local Smith-McMillan form of $R(\lambda)$. We show that a recursive rank search procedure, applied to a block-Toeplitz matrix built on the Laurent expansion of $R(\lambda)$ around an arbitrary complex point $\lambda_0$, allows us to compute a compact local Smith-McMillan form of that rational matrix $R(\lambda)$ at the point $\lambda_0$, provided we keep track of the transformation matrices used in the rank search. It also allows us to recover the root polynomials of a polynomial matrix and root vectors of a rational matrix, at an expansion point $\lambda_0$. Numerical tests illustrate the promising performance of the resulting algorithm.

A low-memory Lanczos method with rational Krylov compression for matrix functions

Abstract:In this work we introduce a memory-efficient method for computing the action of a Hermitian matrix function on a vector. Our method consists of a rational Lanczos algorithm combined with a basis compression procedure based on rational Krylov subspaces that only involve small matrices. The cost of the compression procedure is negligible with respect to the cost of the Lanczos algorithm. This enables us to avoid storing the whole Krylov basis, leading to substantial reductions in memory requirements. This method is particularly effective when the rational Lanczos algorithm needs a significant number of iterations to converge and each iteration involves a low computational effort. This scenario often occurs when polynomial Lanczos, as well as extended and shift-and-invert Lanczos are employed. Theoretical results prove that, for a wide variety of functions, the proposed algorithm differs from rational Lanczos by an error term that is usually negligible. The algorithm is compared with other low-memory Krylov methods from the literature on a variety of test problems, showing competitive performance.

Abstract:A numerical method for efficient calculation of recently defined extension of k -beta functions, based on weighted quadrature formulas of Gaussian type, is proposed. The modified moments of an even exponential weight function on (−1,1) , with essential singularities at ±1, are calculated in symbolic form in terms of the Meijer G -function. A similar problem with respect the two-parameter Mittag-Leffler function Es1,s2(z) is also considered. The Mathematica package OrthogonalPolynomials by Cvetković and Milovanović (2004) [4] is applied. Also, a new extension of k -gamma and k -beta functions by using two parameter k -Mittag-Leffler function is presented, as well as their basic properties, including some identities, a functional relation, summation and derivative formulas, integral representations and Mellin transform.

Modified Newton'S Algorithm for Computing the Group Inverses of Singular Toeplitz Matrices

Abstract:Newton's iteration is modified for the computation of the group inverses of singular Toeplitz matrices. At each iteration, the iteration matrix is approximated by a matrix with a low displacement rank. Because of the displacement structure of the iteration matrix, the matrix-vector multiplication involved in Newton's iteration can be done efficiently. We show that the convergence of the modified Newton iteration is still very fast. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the fast convergence of the proposed method.
Generalizing the Fréchet Derivative Algorithm for the Matrix Exponential

Abstract:The computation of off-diagonal blocks of matrix functions $f(T)$, where $T$ is block triangular, poses a challenging problem in scientific computing. We present a novel algorithm that exploits the structure of block triangular matrices, generalizing the algorithm of Al-Mohy and Higham for computing the Fréchet derivative of the matrix exponential. This work has significant applications in fields such as exponential integrators for solving systems of first-order differential equations, Hamiltonian linear systems in control theory, and option pricing in finance. Our approach introduces a linear operator that maps off-diagonal blocks of $T$ into their counterparts in $f(T)$. By studying the algebraic properties of the operator, we establish a comprehensive computational framework, paving the way to extend existing Fréchet derivative algorithms of matrix functions to more general settings. For the matrix exponential, in particular, the algorithm employs the scaling and squaring method with diagonal Padé approximants to $\exp(x)$, with parameters chosen based on a rigorous backward error analysis, which notably does not depend on the norm of the off-diagonal blocks. The numerical experiment demonstrates that our algorithm surpasses existing algorithms in terms of accuracy and efficiency, making it highly valuable for a wide range of applications.
