Abstract:Direct dehydrogenation of propane to propylene (PDH) is a promising route to meet the ever-growing global propylene demand, but the industrial Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from serious deactivation derived from coke deposition and sintering under harsh reaction conditions. In this work, PtZn bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated into high-silica SSZ-13 zeolites (PtZn@SSZ-13) were synthesized via a facile ligand-protected interzeolite transformation strategy. In a PDH reaction, the synthesized 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 catalyst exhibits superior catalytic performance with a propane conversion of 23.7% and a propylene selectivity of 96.8%, which is significantly better than that of PtZn supported on high-silica SSZ-13 (0.5Pt3Zn/SSZ-13). Particularly, the high catalytic activity of this catalyst can be kept during three successive oxidation–reduction cycles. Detailed characterizations including HAADF-STEM, XPS, UV–Vis, H 2 -TPR reveal that the remarkable improvement of PDH performance is attributed to the PtZn synergistic effect as well as the confinement of SSZ-13 zeolites. The DFT calculations and microkinetic simulations also evidenced that the Pt particles anchored on the Zn-doped SSZ-13 zeolite pore framework possessed obviously higher propane dehydrogenation activity, whereas the anti-coking ability of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 was also stronger than Pt (1 1 1) surface, demonstrating the superior performance of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation to propylene has broad application prospects, so it is of great significance to explore low-cost and environmentally friendly catalysts. Metal hydrides, as active sites, exhibit excellent dehydrogenation property. Herein, we report titanium modified [ZnH] + ([ZnH] + ···TiO 6 ) site with high activity (14.49 mmolC 3 H 6 ·g cat −1 ·h −1 ) and regeneration performance, which is derived from the in-situ conversion of [ZnOH] + in the dehydrogenation reaction. Combined with in-situ spectroscopic characterizations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, the unique [ZnH] + ···TiO 6 moiety was confirmed, and the evolution process from [ZnOH] + to [ZnH] + was clarified. XPS and AIMD calculations show that Zn in the [ZnH] + ···TiO 6 structure is in an electron-rich state with high H-affinity, which can effectively reduce the propyl C-H cleavage barriers based on slow-growth simulations. In general, titanium modification can effectively stabilize the [ZnH] + species and enrich the electrons density of zinc, which contribute to the enhanced PDH performance.

Abstract:In this work, low-cost and environmentally friendly catalysts Ti-doped ZnAl2O4 spinel were prepared by a homogeneous co-precipitation method and employed to catalyze propane dehydrogenation. In situ FTIR revealed that Ti accelerated the conversion of zinc propyl species (intermediate species) to propene, which is rate-determining step for propane dehydrogenation over active site coordinatively unsaturated Zn (Zncus). Characterizations, such as H2-TPR, temperature programmed surface reaction (TPSR) and C3H6-TPD illustrated that Ti improved oxygen mobility resulting in the improved catalytic activity, and promoted desorption of propene leading to significant enhancements in propene selectivity and the stability of catalyst. Zn1.5Ti1Al2 exhibited an excellent catalytic performance due to the existence of more Zncus, at 43% C3H8 conversion, a 84% of C3H6 selectivity was obtained at 500 ° C. The deactivation of Ti-doped ZnAl2O4 spinel is due to the formation of coke rather than the reduction of Zn species. This work provided an effective strategy to improve the catalytic activity of Zn-based catalysts for propane dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene, but the widely used Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from short-term stability and unsatisfactory propylene selectivity. Herein, we develop a ligand-protected direct hydrogen reduction method for encapsulating subnanometer bimetallic Pt-Zn clusters inside silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite. The introduction of Zn species significantly improved the stability of the Pt clusters and gave a superhigh propylene selectivity of 99.3 % with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 3.6-54 h-1 and specific activity of propylene formation of 65.5 mol C 3 H 6 gPt -1 h-1 (WHSV=108 h-1 ) at 550 °C. Moreover, no obvious deactivation was observed over PtZn4@S-1-H catalyst even after 13000 min on stream (WHSV=3.6 h-1 ), affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.001 h-1 , which is 200 times lower than that of the PtZn4/Al2 O3 counterpart under the same conditions. We also show that the introduction of Cs+ ions into the zeolite can improve the regeneration stability of catalysts, and the catalytic activity kept unchanged after four continuous cycles.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a commercial propylene production technology that has received much attention, but high reaction temperatures result in a decrease of propylene selectivity and catalyst stability. This paper describes a single-site [PtZn4] catalyst by assembling atomically ordered intermetallic alloy (IMA) as a selective and ultrastable PDH catalyst. The catalyst enables more than 95% of propylene selectivity from 520°C to 620°C. No obvious deactivation is observed within the 160-h test, superior to PtSn/Al2O3 and state-of-the-art Pt-based catalysts. Based on in situ X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, and density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the surface [PtZn4] ensembles in PtZn IMAs serve as the key active site structures, wherein the geometry-isolated and electron-rich Pt1 site in [PtZn4] ensembles readily promotes the first and second C–H cleavage of propane but inhibits further dehydrogenation of surface-bounded propylene. This significantly improves the selectivity and stability by prohibiting coke side reactions.

Abstract:AbstractStructured catalysts exhibit the advantages of high diffusion efficiency and low heat transfer resistance, which have attracted increasing attention to non‐adiabatic gas–solid process. However, the metal‐supported coating catalysts face the problems of weaker bond strength and severe sintering, especially under the conditions of large flow rate and high temperature. Herein, metal@Silicalite‐1 structured catalysts with high adhesion and thermal stability were successfully prepared by hydroxylating the substrate with anatase. Rich surface Ti‐OH significantly strengthened the adhesion stability of the zeolite coating. In propane dehydrogenation reaction, the optimized PtZn@S‐1‐15Ti showed a high specific activity of 49.6 molC3H6·molPt−1·s−1 with propylene selectivity above 99% at 600°C. The introduction of anatase accelerated the aggregation of silicon sources and induced nucleation with growth content of zeolite increased by 3.6 times. It breaks the inherent contradiction between high loading amount and strong binding ability of coated catalysts, which broadens the avenues for industrial applications.
Enhanced performance for propane dehydrogenation through Pt clusters alloying with copper in zeolite

Abstract:Metal alloys have been widely applied for heterogeneous catalysis, especially alkane dehydrogenation. However, the catalysts always suffer from sintering and coke deposition due to the rigorous reaction conditions. Herein, we described an original approach to prepare a catalyst where highly dispersed Pt clusters alloying with copper were encapsulated in silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite for propane dehydrogenation (PDH). The introduction of Cu species significantly enhances the catalytic activity and prolongs the lifetime of the catalyst. 0.1Pt0.4CuK@S-1 exhibits a propane conversion of 24.8% with 98.2% selectivity of propene, and the specific activity of propylene formation is up to 32 mol·g Pt −1 ·h −1 at 500 °C. No obvious deactivation is observed even after 73 h on stream, affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.00032 h −1 . The excellent activity and stability are ascribed to the confinement of zeolites and the stabilization of Cu species for Pt clusters.

Abstract:Pt/HSSZ-13 with 0.5-3 wt % Pt load and PtCu/HSSZ-13 with 1-7 wt % Cu load were prepared by the initial wetness impregnation method. Without compromising the original crystal structure and surface texture characteristics, doped Pt and Cu are dispersed uniformly throughout the surface. The Si/Al molar ratio affected not only the texture of the crystal but also the number of acid sites on the catalyst surface. The appropriate addition of Cu significantly increased the dispersion of Pt. The addition of Cu also provided electrons to Pt, affected the electron cloud density on the surface of Pt, and then reduced the adsorption of propylene and improved the selectivity of propylene. Cu can also decrease the number of acidic sites on the catalyst surface, thus slowing the deactivation rate of the catalyst and the amount of carbon deposition during the reaction. 1.0Pt3.0Cu/HSSZ-13(40) had a small number of strong acid sites (3.89 mu mol/g) and showed the best propane initial conversion (73.95%), excellent propylene selectivity (97.60%), lowest deactivation constant (0.33 h(-1)), and good regeneration robustness.
Bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite with enhanced stability for propane dehydrogenation

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has been an outstanding technique with a bright prospect, which can meet the growing global demand for propylene. However, undesired side reactions result in the deactivation of the Pt-based catalysts, which contribute to the insufficient lifetime of the catalysts. Herein, we describe a novel catalyst by encapsulating bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite for efficient dehydrogenation of propane, which synergizes the confinement of zeolites and the geometric and electronic effects on Pt species for enhancing the catalyst stability. The introduction of bimetallic additives efficiently promotes the dispersion of platinum and the electron transfer between Pt species and the additives, which greatly prolongs the lifetime of the catalysts. Particularly, no obvious deactivation is observed on 0.2Pt0.3Co0.5CuK@S-1 after 93 h on stream with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 5.4 h-1, revealing an ultralow deactivation constant of 0.0011 h-1 (t = 909 h). The formation rate of propylene still maintains at a high value of 407 mol gPt-1 h-1 (WHSV = 21.6 h-1) at 580 ℃ even after on pure propane stream for 42 h. The catalyst with the bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite reveals ultra-high activity and stability for PDH, which is ascribed to the highly dispersed Pt species and the stabilization effect of bimetallic additives on Pt species.
Demetallation and reduction induced ultra-dispersed PtZn alloy confined in zeolite for propane dehydrogenation

Abstract:Developing efficient bimetallic Pt-based catalyst is highly desired for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) process. Typical co-impregnation method often results in inhomogeneous distributions of metal species on supports. Herein, we reported a facile method to support PtZn bimetal alloy nanoparticles onto Beta zeolite, mainly existing as highly dispersed Pt 1 Zn 1 alloy species. Zn@Beta was first synthesized by hydrothermal method with the aid of ethylenediamine (EDA), leading to the introduction of Zn atoms into zeolite lattice. An impregnation process was subsequently employed to support Pt species. During this process, skeleton Zn atoms migrated out of the framework and were then reduced together with Pt in flowing H 2 , leading to the formation of PtZn alloy with mainly Pt 1 Zn 1 structures. Cs-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission election microscope and X-ray absorption fine structure analyses revealed that this method was more conducive to the formation of PtZn alloy compared with the co-impregnation method. The obtained catalyst of 0.3Pt1Zn@Beta exhibited initial propane conversion of 36.8% and propylene selectivity of 99.3% combined with low deactivation rate (0.004 h –1 ) over 24 h with propane WHSV of 4.7 h –1 at 550 °C. The catalyst also exhibited good PDH performance in a long-term reaction (180 h) and robustness during regeneration reactions by simply flushing hydrogen. Abstract:Metal clusters encapsulated in zeolites have attracted increasing attention because of their unique electronic properties with high stability, but diffusion limitation is the bottleneck in the utilization efficiency of active sites, especially in bulk crystals. Nanosized zeolites could effectively improve mass transport by shortening the diffusion length. However, their rough surface and low crystallinity lead to a high surface barrier and low stabilization effect, respectively. Here, we developed a dual-template method to synthesize finned MFI zeolites to encapsulate PtZn clusters. In a propane dehydrogenation reaction, the as-prepared PtZn@S-1-Fin exhibited a high specific activity of 17.0 molC3H6 molPt –1 s–1 at 600 °C, which was about 1.7 times higher than that of PtZn confined in a nanosized zeolite. This could be attributed to the epitaxial highly crystallized zeolite combining a short diffusion length and a high surface permeability simultaneously.

Abstract:Structured catalysts coatings exhibit excellent performance on non‐adiabatic gas–solid process, deriving from their enhanced heat and mass transfer properties. However, the coating catalysts prepared by traditional hydrothermal method of zeolite encapsulating noble metal are prone to spalling, especially under conditions of large flow rate and high temperature. Herein, we prepared PtZn clusters encapsulated in silicalite‐1 zeolite coating on stainless steel with high bonding strength by an improved in situ growth method. The optimized catalyst exhibited ultra‐thin, uniform, continuous, and high degree of crosslinking, thereby enhancing mass transfer and thermal stability. In propane dehydrogenation reaction, the optimized PtZn@S‐1‐R showed a high specific activity of 14.7 molC3H6 molPt−1 s−1 and a propylene selectivity above 99% at 600°C with a high weight hourly space velocity of 120 h−1. The metal‐encapsulated zeolite coating catalysts broaden the application avenue for heterogeneous catalysis with great application prospects.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) provides a promising way to meet the requirement of propylene supply, but the commonly-used Pt-based catalysts still suffer from unsatisfactory stability and deactivation. Herein, an interfacial regulation strategy is developed to construct the Cu, Pt, and Zn species modified hollow porous silicalite-1 (CuPt/Zn-HPS-1). Owing to the regulation role of Pt, the electron-deficient [ZnOH] + Lewis acid sites accelerated the C-H activation, which was beneficial to achieve the excellent PDH performance. More importantly, the additionally introduced Cu 2+ further modulated the geometric structure and electronic density of Pt, thus effectively improving the anti-sintering ability and alleviating the coke deposition. Benefiting from the interfacial regulation and Lewis active [ZnOH] + sites, the optimal CuPt/Zn-HPS-1 catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic PDH performance with the initial propane conversion of 30.4 % and propylene selectivity of 99.0 %. The CuPt/Zn-HPS-1 also demonstrated robust recycling stability in reaction-regeneration cycling test with the smaller deactivation rate constant. This work affords a strategy for improving PDH performance in practical industrial application.

Abstract:The development of thermally stable Pt-based catalysts with superior performance for propane dehydrogenation reactions remains a daunting challenge. In this study, a series of PtSn-Mg(Zn)AlO catalysts with different Zn and Pt contents were synthesized by the anion-exchange method for the propane dehydrogenation reaction. To investigate the influence of Zn on the reaction performance and the catalyst structure, the prepared catalysts were characterized with several analytical techniques, including XRD, TEM, HRTEM, H-2-TPD and CO pulse chemisorption. A good propane conversion (initially higher than 55% and averaging 45.2% over a period of 2 h) and propene selectivity (higher than 99%) were obtained experimentally with PtSn-Mg(3Zn)AlO at 550 degrees C. The results demonstrated that Pt provided the active sites and that Zn was a promoter. The HRTEM and CO pulse chemisorption results indicated that the addition of Zn to the PtSn-MgAlO catalyst can stabilize the dispersion of metal particles and thus inhibit the sintering of Pt particles. Furthermore, the activities of the used catalysts were almost recovered through reaction-regeneration cycles with the burning-off of coke during five cycles.

Abstract:With the modified Ti-ZSM-5 zeolites as supports, the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) performance of the non-noble metal Co-based catalysts can be enhanced, which is benefited from the Ti species-tuned state of active Co species and surface acid property. The developed Co/Ti-ZSM-5 catalysts exhibit >95% C3H6 selectivity and good regeneration stability in the recycling PDH reactions. The characterization results illustrate the structural evolution of Ti from the framework and extra-framework Ti species to the small-size anatase TiO2 species with decreasing the Si/Ti ratio of the Ti-ZSM-5 zeolites, tailoring the dispersion and chemical state of the Co sites at different Co-zeolite or Co-TiO2 interfaces. The Ti-ZSM-5 zeolites with high Si/Ti ratios also show significantly reduced surface acidity especially the Brønsted acidity in comparison with the Al-ZSM-5 zeolite, thus facilitating the C3H6 desorption for enhancing the selectivity and anti-coke stability.

But the industrial Pt‐based catalysts often suffer from short‐term stability under the high temperature reaction environment (500~700 °C) via sintering and coke deposition. Herein, stable PDH reaction in high propylene yield has been achieved by the confinement of Pt‐Zn intermetallic alloys (IMAs) in the channels of silicalite‐1. Single‐site Zn in the MFI framework was found to play a key role on assisting and stabilizing the PtZn IMAs for efficient PDH. By the cooperative action of the spatial confined PtZn IMAs and the lattice confined framework Zn, high propylene selectivity (>99%) without obvious deactivation was realized on the as‐developed catalyst (PtZn@S‐1) under 600 °C even after 90 h. The low deactivation constant (0.003 h‐1) was 6 times lower than that of the industrial PtSn catalyst.

Abstract:Silicoaluminate zeolites have relatively strong Brönsted (B) acid properties that can easily lead to deep cracking reactions, making them less favourable as carriers for propane dehydrogenation. Here, we utilise zincosilicate zeolite with less B‐acid produced by the introduction of the heteroatom Zn into the framework as a carrier, followed by simultaneous ion exchange (IE) of M monometallic or PtM bimetallic (M = Cu, Zn and Ga, etc.). The optimized PtZn/Zn‐4 exhibits a superior propane dehydrogenation performance over PtCu/Zn‐4 and PtGa/Zn‐4, which can achieve a propane conversion of about 30% in a pure propane atmosphere at 550 °C and can be operated for at least 168 h without significant deactivation. Characterization techniques such as spherical aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy, in situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy with different gas adsorptions are used to investigate these PtM@zeolite catalysts in order to deepen the understanding of acid site identification, promoter effect and catalysis.

Abstract:Highly active and inexpensive catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) are required for largescale propylene production in industrial application. Compared to Pt- and Cr-based catalysts, Zn-based nanomaterial is a promising candidate due to its environmental friendliness and coking-resistant but remains a great challenge. In this study, we developed a novel multi-component structure consisting of low Pt and abundant active Zn species highly dispersed on Fe-doped S-1 zeolite as PDH catalyst. Specifically, Fe-doping in S-1 support provided anchoring sites for loading Zn species with uniform distribution. Moreover, the very small amount of Pt was applied as promoter, which is beneficial to achieve the re-dispersion of Zn species with the formation of Zn δ+ and Zn 2+ active sites. The resulting [email protected] catalyst exhibited the outstanding performance (conversion of propane: 40%, selectivity of propylene: 85%, and yield of propylene: 31.39%) as well as satisfactory regeneration ability. This improvement can be ascribed to the synergistic coupling between Pt promoter and the highly dispersed Zn species on modified S-1 support. This study opens a new way to design efficient and stable dehydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:Unraveling the structure-activity relationship and improving the catalytic performance is paramount in propane dehydro-aromatization reactions. Herein, a tandem catalyst with high propane dehydro-aromatization reaction performance was prepared via coupling the PtFe@S-1 with Zn/ZSM-5 zeolites (PtFe@S-1&1.0Zn/ZSM-5), which exhibits high dehydrogenation activity, aromatics selectivity (∼60% at ∼78% propane conversion), and stability. The addition of zinc inhibits the cleavage of C 6 = intermediates on ZSM-5 and promotes the aromatization pathway by weakening zeolite acid strength, significantly improving the selectivity to aromatics. This understanding of the structure-activity relationship in propane dehydro-aromatization reaction helps develop future high-performance catalysts.
