Trademarks and firm competitiveness : an empirical analysis of the world top R & D spending companies

Lorena M. D'Agostino
Abstract:Extant literature has shown that firms react to increased Chinese competition by upgrading product quality and investing in innovation-intensive activities (i.e. ICT, patents), while there is more limited evidence about the use of market strategies based on intangible resources on downstream operations (e.g. brand reputation, product differentiation). In this paper, we argue that firms in industries exposed to high Chinese penetration use marketing-innovation strategies, such as trademarks. We posit that large innovative corporations are more likely to use trademarks and a diversified trademarking portfolio if they face increased foreign competition from China. Our hypotheses are tested on a sample of the world most innovative companies from the recently-released JRC-OECD COR&DIP? database, which provides financial data and trademarking activities in the years 2009-2014.
