Abstract:A hybrid transport approach for the bulk evolution of viscous QCD matter produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is presented. The expansion of the dense deconfined phase of the reaction is modeled with viscous hydrodynamics while the dilute late hadron gas stage is described microscopically by the Boltzmann equation. The advantages of such a hybrid approach lie in the improved capability of handling large dissipative corrections in the late dilute phase of the reaction, including a realistic treatment of the non-equilibrium hadronic chemistry and kinetic freeze-out. By varying the switching temperature at which the hydrodynamic output is converted to particles for further propagation with the Boltzmann cascade we test the ability of the macroscopic hydrodynamic approach to emulate the microscopic evolution during the hadronic stage and extract the temperature dependence of the effective shear viscosity of the hadron resonance gas produced in the collision. We find that the extracted values depend on the prior hydrodynamic history and hence do not represent fundamental transport properties of the hadron resonance gas. We conclude that viscous fluid dynamics does not provide a faithful description of hadron resonance gas dynamics with predictive power, and that both components of the hybrid approach are needed for a quantitative description of the fireball expansion and its freeze-out.

We find that the average quark-gluon plasma (QGP)-specific shear viscosity $\ensuremath{\eta}/s$ slightly increases from Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. However, a further study assuming different temperature dependencies for $(\ensuremath{\eta}/s){}_{\mathrm{QGP}}$ shows that one cannot uniquely constrain the form of $(\ensuremath{\eta}/s){}_{\mathrm{QGP}}(T)$ by fitting the spectra and ${v}_{2}$ alone. Based on our current understanding, the question whether the QGP fluid is more viscous or more perfect in the temperature regime reached by LHC energies is still open.

Abstract:The specific shear viscosity (eta/s)(QGP) of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) can be extracted from elliptic flow data in heavy-ion collisions by comparing them with the dynamical model VISHNU which couples a viscous fluid dynamic description of the QGP with a microscopic kinetic description of the late hadronic rescattering and freeze-out stage. A robust method for fixing (eta/s)(QGP) from the collision centrality dependence of the eccentricity-scaled charged hadron elliptic flow is presented. The systematic uncertainties associated with this extraction method are discussed, with specific attention to our presently restricted knowledge of initial conditions. With the (eta/s)(QGP) extracted in this way, VISHNU yields an excellent description of all soft-hadron data from Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy. Extrapolations to Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC, using both a purely hydrodynamic approach and VISHNU, are presented and compared with recent experimental results from the ALICE Collaboration. The LHC data are again well described by VISHNU, with the same (eta/s)(QGP) value as at RHIC energies.

Abstract:It is shown that the recently developed hybrid code VISHNU, which couples a relativistic viscous fluid dynamical description of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with a microscopic Boltzmann cascade for the late hadronic rescattering stage, yields an excellent description of charged and identified hadron spectra and elliptic flow measured in 200 A GeV Au + Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). Using initial conditions that incorporate event-by-event fluctuations in the initial shape and orientation of the collision fireball and values eta/s for the specific shear viscosity of the quark-gluon plasma that were recently extracted from the measured centrality dependence of the eccentricity-scaled, p(T)-integrated charged hadron elliptic flow v(2,ch)/epsilon, we obtain universally good agreement between theory and experiment for the p(T) spectra and differential elliptic flow v(2)(p(T)) for both pions and protons at all collision centralities.

Abstract:With the new viscous hydrodynamic + hadron cascade hybrid code VISHNU, a rather precise (O(25%)) extraction of the QGP shear viscosity (eta/s)_QGP from heavy-ion elliptic flow data is possible if the initial eccentricity of the collision fireball is known with <5% accuracy. At this point, eccentricities from initial state models differ by up to 20%, leading to an O(100%) uncertainty for (eta/s)_QGP. It is shown that a simultaneous comparison of elliptic and triangular flow, v_2 and v_3, puts strong constraints on initial state models and can largely eliminate the present uncertainty in (eta/s)_QGP. The variation of the differential elliptic flow v_2(p_T) for identified hadrons between RHIC and LHC energies provides additional tests of the evolution model.

Abstract:We explore the effects of shear viscosity on the hydrodynamic evolution and final hadron spectra of Cu + Cu collisions at ultrarelativistic collision energies, using the newly developed (2 + 1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic code VISH2+1. Based on the causal Israel-Stewart formalism, this code describes the transverse evolution of longitudinally boost-invariant systems without azimuthal symmetry around the beam direction. Shear viscosity is shown to decelerate the longitudinal and accelerate the transverse hydrodynamic expansion. For fixed initial conditions, this leads to a longer quark-gluon plasma (QGP) lifetime, larger radial flow in the final state, and flatter transverse momentum spectra for the emitted hadrons compared to ideal fluid dynamic simulations. We find that the elliptic flow coefficient v(2) is particularly sensitive to shear viscosity: even the lowest value allowed by the AdS/CFT conjecture eta/s >= 1/4 pi suppresses v(2) enough to have significant consequences for the phenomenology of heavy-ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). A comparison between our numerical results and earlier analytic estimates of viscous effects within a blast-wave model parametrization of the expanding fireball at freeze-out reveals that the full dynamical theory leads to much tighter constraints for the specific shear viscosity eta/s, thereby supporting the notion that the quark-gluon plasma created at RHIC exhibits almost "perfect fluidity.".

Abstract:We report recent progress on causal viscous hydrodynamics for relativisticheavy ion collisions. For fixed specific shear viscosity eta/s, uncertaintiesin the elliptic flow arising from initial conditions, equation of state, bulkviscosity and numerical viscosity, and the treatment of the highly viscoushadronic stage and freeze-out procedure are analysed. A comparison of currentviscous hydrodynamic results with experimental data yields a robust upper limiteta/s < 5/(4pi).
Causal Viscous Hydrodynamics for Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

Abstract:The viscosity of the QGP is a presently hotly debated subject. Since its computation from first principles is difficult, it is desirable to try to extract it from experimental data. Viscous hydrodynamics provides a tool that can attack this problem and which may work in regions where ideal hydrodynamics begins to fail. This thesis focuses on viscous hydrodynamics for relativistic heavy ion collisions. We first review the 2nd order viscous equations obtained from different approaches, and then report on the work of the Ohio State University group on setting up the equations for causal viscous hydrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions and solving them numerically for central and noncentral Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies and above. We discuss shear and bulk viscous effects on the hydrodynamic evolution of entropy density, temperature, collective flow, and flow anisotropies, and on the hadron multiplicity, single particle spectra and elliptic flow. Viscous entropy production and its influence on the centrality dependence of hadron multiplicities and the multiplicity scaling of eccentricity-scaled elliptic flow are studied in viscous hydrodynamics and compared with experimental data. The dynamical effects of using different versions of the Israel-Stewart second order formalism for causal viscous fluid dynamics are discussed, resolving some of the apparent discrepancies between early results reported by different groups. Finally, we assess the present status of constraining the shear viscosity to entropy ratio of the hot and dense matter created at RHIC.

Abstract:To study the bulk properties of quark-gluon plasma produced at beam-energy scan (BES) energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we extend the (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics clvisc to include net baryon number conservation and Israel-Stewart–like equations for baryon diffusion with the neos-bqs equation of state, fluctuating initial conditions from the Monte Carlo Glauber model and the afterburner smash. This integrated framework is shown to provide a good description of identified particle spectra, mean transverse momenta, and anisotropic flows for different centralities and over a wide range of collision energies (7.7–62.4 GeV). It is found that the mean momenta of identified particles and anisotropic flows increase mildly with the collision energy due to larger radial flow. We further compute the multiple-particle cumulant ratio v2{4}/v2{2} of elliptic flow across BES energies, and find that the relative fluctuations of elliptic flow are insensitive to the collision energy, consistent with the preliminary STAR data. Our model provides a benchmark for understanding the RHIC-BES data and studying the critical properties and phase structure of hot and dense QCD matter.

Abstract:Using the VISHNU hybrid model, we calculate the multiplicity, spectra, and elliptic flow of , , and in 2.76A TeV Pb+ Pb collisions. Comparisons between our calculations and the ALICE measurements show that the model generally describes the soft hadron data of these strange and multistrange hadrons at several centrality bins. Mass ordering of elliptic flow among p, K, p, , , and has also been studied and discussed. With a nice description of the particle yields, we explore chemical and thermal freeze- out of various hadrons species at the Large Hadron Collider within the framework of the VISHNU hybrid model.

Abstract:We have developed a next-generation hybrid event-by-event three-fluid hydrodynamic model, suitable for simulations of heavy-ion collisions in the energy range from few up to tens of GeV per colliding NN pair. At such energies the interpenetration time of the nuclei is of the same order as the lifetime of the system, however this model treats the initial phase hydrodynamically. Thanks to that it is more sensitive to the Equation of State than 1-fluid models with initial states being parametrised or generated by transport approach. Hence, our model is well designed for simulations at collision energies, at which matter in vicinity of the QCD critical endpoint is expected. The construction of the model is explained and basic observables like hadron spectra in rapidity and transverse momentum, as well as elliptic flow are calculated.

Abstract:We perform viscous hydrodynamic calculations in 2+1 dimensions to investigate the influence of bulk viscosity on the viscous suppression of elliptic flow in non-central heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies. Bulk and shear viscous effects on the evolution of radial and elliptic flow are studied with different model assumptions for the transport coefficients. We find that the temperature dependence of the relaxation time for the bulk viscous pressure, especially its critical slowing down near the quark-hadron phase transition at T_c, partially offsets effects from the strong growth of the bulk viscosity itself near T_c, and that even small values of the specific shear viscosity eta/s of the fireball matter can be extracted without large uncertainties from poorly controlled bulk viscous effects.
Spectra and Elliptic Flow for Identified Hadrons in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb Collisions

Abstract:Using the VISHNU hybrid model that couples (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics to a microscopic hadronic transport model, we calculate the multiplicity, p(T) spectra, and elliptic flow for pions, kaons, and protons in 2.76A TeV Pb+Pb collisions, using MC-KLN initializations with smoothed initial conditions, obtained by averaging over a large number of events. The results from our calculations are compared to data from the ALICE Collaboration, showing nice agreement over several centrality bins. Using the same inputs, we predict the p(T) spectra and elliptic flow for phi mesons and explore their flow development in the strong and weak coupling limits through hydrodynamic calculations with different decoupling temperatures. In addition we study the influence of baryon and antibaryon annihilation processes on common observables and demonstrate that, by including annihilation processes below a switching temperature of 165 MeV, VISHNU provides a good description of the multiplicity and p(T) spectra for pions, kaons, and protons measured by PHENIX and ALICE at both the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
Collective flow and the fluid behavior in p/d/$^3$He+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV

Abstract:By varying the intrinsic initial geometry, the p/d/$^3$He+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provide a unique opportunity to understand the collective behavior and probe the possible sub-nucleon fluctuations in small systems. In this paper, we employ the hybrid model iEBE-VISHNU with Trento initial conditions to study the collective flow and the fluid behavior in p/d/$^3$He+Au collisions. With fine-tuned parameters, iEBE-VISHNU can describe the $v_2(p_T)$ and $v_3(p_T)$ data from the PHENIX and STAR collaborations. However, for some certain parameter sets with initial sub-nucleon fluctuation, the hydrodynamic simulations have already beyond their limits with the average Knudsen number $\langle K_n \rangle$ obviously larger than one. Our calculations demonstrate that, for a meaningful evaluation of the fluid behavior in the small systems, model simulations should also pay attention to the validity range of hydrodynamics.

Radial and Elliptic Flow in Pb Plus Pb Collisions at Energies Available at the Cern Large Hadron Collider from Viscous Hydrodynamics

Abstract:A comprehensive viscous hydrodynamic fit of spectra and elliptic flow for charged hadrons and identified pions and protons from Au + Au collisions of all centralities measured at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is performed and used as the basis for predicting the analogous observables for Pb + Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at root s = 2.76 and 5.5A TeV. Comparison with recent measurements of the elliptic flow of charged hadrons by the ALICE experiment shows that the model slightly overpredicts the data if the same (constant) specific shear viscosity eta/s is assumed at both collision energies. In spite of differences in our assumptions for the equation of state, the freeze-out temperature, the chemical composition at freeze-out, and the starting time for the hydrodynamic evolution, our results agree remarkably well with those of Luzum [Phys. Rev. C 83, 044911 (2011)], indicating robustness of the hydrodynamic model extrapolations. Future measurements of the centrality and transverse momentum dependence of spectra and elliptic flow for identified hadrons predicted here will further test the model and shed light on possible variations of the quark-gluon transport coefficients between RHIC and LHC energies.
