Abstract:Flower-like Bi2WO6 and Bi2O3–Bi2WO6 composite microstructures have been synthesized via a facile and rapid microwave-assisted hydrothermal method through controlling the experimental parameters. The phases and morphologies of the products are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersion X-ray analysis (EDX), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Photocatalytic experiments indicate that such Bi2O3–Bi2WO6 composite possesses higher photocatalytic activity for RhB degradation under visible-light irradiation in comparison with pure Bi2O3 and Bi2WO6. On the basis of the calculated energy band positions, the enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the effective separation of electron–hole pairs between the two semiconductors. The present study provides a new strategy to design composite materials with enhanced photocatalytic activity.
Enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic performances using Bi2WO6/MS (M = Cd, Zn) heterostructures: facile synthesis and photocatalytic mechanisms

Abstract:The formation of type II heterostructures is proved to be an effective method to improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. In this report, a surface functionalization method using 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as the surface functionalizing agent was adopted for the fabrication of Bi2WO6/MS (M = Cd and Zn) heterostructures. The composition and microstructures of the as-prepared heterostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The as-prepared Bi2WO6/CdS and Bi2WO6/ZnS heterostructures exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activities for the degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh B) as compared to pure Bi2WO6, CdS, ZnS nanoparticles and Degussa P25. The enhanced photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared heterostructures may relate to the effective electron-hole separation during the photocatalytic process. A series of scavengers (benzoquinone for O-2(center dot-), ammonium oxalate for h(+), AgNO3 for e(-), and t-BuOH for (OH)-O-center dot) were employed to investigate the possible mechanism of the photocatalytic process. The results clearly indicate that the photogenerated holes are the main active species during the photocatalytic process.

Abstract:As a visible light–driven photocatalyst, bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) has attracted widespread attention and shown great potential in photocatalysis. To further enhance the photocatalytic performance of Bi2WO6 under visible light irradiation, several methods have been employed to optimize the properties of Bi2WO6, including morphology control, doping, and surface modification. Bi2WO6 nanomaterials of diverse morphologies, such as nanoplates, nanoparticles, hierarchical microspheres, and ultrathin or porous nanostructures, have been synthesized to achieve large surface area or exposure of high activity crystal facets. The doping of ions can narrow the bandgap to improve light absorption at long wavelength, whereas surface modification by π-conjugated materials, quantum dots, and other general semiconductors can promote the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Moreover, the combination of photochemical and electrochemical technologies exhibited great prospect with fast charge migration rate. Finally, as an example of the various applications of Bi2WO6, the photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction by Bi2WO6 is systematically reviewed.

Abstract:Bi2WO6/UiO-66-NH2 Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by a simple two-step solvothermal method. The structure and composition of the composite were studied by means of XRD, FT-IR, XPS, etc. The morphology of the composite was characterized by SEM and TEM. The photoelectrochemical properties of the composite were analyzed by transient photocurrent response, EIS and PL spectra. Compared with the single material, the construction of heterojunction composite materials was more conducive to the separation of photo-generated electron hole pairs, and the purpose of improving photocatalytic activity was achieved. When nZr:nBi = 1:2, Bi2WO6/UiO-66-NH2 had the best catalytic activity for rhodamine B (RhB, 20 mg/L) and tetracycline (TC, 30 mg/L). The results of the four-cycle experiment verified that the composite material had better stability and reusability. Free radical trapping experiments showed that superoxide radicals (·O2 –) and holes (h+) were the main active substances in the photocatalytic degradation process, and the possible photocatalytic mechanism was speculated.

Abstract:Photocatalytic β-Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 p-n heterojunctions were synthesized by two-step solvothermal method, and then, the phase structure, microstructures, and band structures were characterized with XRD, EDS, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The β-Bi2O3 nanoparticles with the smaller diameter anchor on the surface of Bi2WO6 nanoparticles to form β-Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 nanocomposites, resulting in the band bending for the balance of Fermi level. The band bending of p-n heterojunctions leads to the Z-scheme β-Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 photocatalysts and electron narrow energy transition between Ec of Bi2WO6 and Ev of β-Bi2O3. The accumulation of electrons at EC of β-Bi2O3 and holes at EV of Bi2WO6 both improve the photocatalytic activity of β-Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 nanocomposites. The photocatalytic removal of ciprofloxacin increases up to about 93% for S-20 with the increasing β-Bi2O3 content under visible light irradiation. Therefore, the β-Bi2O3/Bi2WO6 photocatalysts with the dominant radical of •O2− and holes could be regarded as one of promising candidates in the fields of dealing with antibiotics.

Abstract:The separation efficiency of photocarriers is an important part of photocatalytic efficiency. Construction of composite with good contact is a hot topic. In this work, Bi2WO6 is successfully connected with BiOI to form the chemical bonding interface through the same crystal unit, where a precipitation transformation phenomenon is revealed. The chemical bonding interface is conducive to transmission and separation of photocarriers to realize rapid and stable transport and separation through the interface, which is based on the photocurrent density of Bi2WO6/BiOI (BWOI) is about 6 and 40 times higher than Bi2WO6 and BiOI, and the transfer resistance of BWOI is around 5 and 10 times lower than Bi2WO6 and BiOI. Thus, the photocatalytic activity of BWOI is 2.8 and 33.35 times as much as those of Bi2WO6 and BiOI. During the photocatalysis process, photogenerated holes (h+) and superoxide radical (·O2−) are the main oxidizers, and the constructed the chemical bonding interface displays excellent photostability.

Abstract:In our work, Zn0.5Cd0.5S/WO3 (ZCSW) S-scheme heterostructure composites were prepared by an innovation synthesis called electrostatic adsorption method, which supported to form high-quality hetero-interface connection to efficiently improve the photocatalytic activity. Specially, 1D Zn0.5Cd0.5S (ZCS) nanorods and 2D WO3 nanosheets were used to construct the S-scheme photocatalysts that have fully reflected both two components’ structural and morphological features. By DFT calculation, this S-scheme photogenerated electron transfer channel could be predicted by the work function between Zn0.5Cd0.5S (4.132 eV relative to vacuum level) and WO3 (5.175 eV), thus the practical effect of the S-scheme heterojunction could support the electron flow from the valence band of Zn0.5Cd0.5S to the conduction band of WO3 under the built-in electric field in the space charge region. Meanwhile, PL spectra and electrochemical measurement together reveal the photogenerated electron separation enhancement of ZCSW composites. For photocatalysis, ZCSW40 (40 stands for the weight ratio of WO3 versus Zn0.5Cd0.5S) was the best catalyst among the as-prepared samples with the Cr (VI) degradation rate of 20.4 μmol min−1·g−1cat., which was nearly 3 times and 2 times higher than those of bare ZCS and the rest of ZCSW photocatalysts under the simulated solar-driven irradiation. Furthermore, ZCSW40 possessed excellent cycling stability in photocatalytic reaction, as well as the highest reaction dynamic constant of 0.92103.

Abstract:Phase-pure Bi2MoxW1-xO6 (0 <= x <= 1) photocatalysts were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The as-prepared Bi2MoxW1-xO6 photocatalysts had an Aurivillius crystal structure and showed special anisotropic growth. The optical absorption spectra of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 were red-shifted monotonically as the value of x increased. On the basis of theoretical calculations, the introduction of Mo atom into Bi2WO6 could reduce the conduction band level of Bi2WO6, so the band gap energy was reduced. The curvature of the conduction band became smaller with an increase in the Mo content due to the different electronegativities of Mo 4d and W 5d. The photocatalytic activities determined by rhodamine B degradation under visible light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm) of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 photocatalysts were significantly improved as compared with Bi2MoO6. The higher efficiency of Bi2WO6 was attributed to more effective photoelectron transfer in the conduction band with larger curvature. The photocatalytic activities under visible light irradiation (lambda > 450 nm) of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 photocatalysts were much higher than that of Bi2WO6. The mechanism was discussed on the basis of the cystal structure, morphology, and electronic stucture. This work provides a strategy for developing active photocatalysts with more utilization of visible light.
Bi2Mo W1-O6 Solid Solutions with Tunable Band Structure and Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activities

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis is an effective green way to combat water pollution. For the first time, this study reports a novel method to develop Bi2MoxW1-xO6 solid solution with microsphere structure through anion-exchange method. All Bi2MoxW1-xO6 samples exhibit an Aurivillius-type crystal structure without any secondary phase, confirming that in complete solid solutions as the value of x increases, the band gap energy of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 solid solutions decreases, while the optical absorption edge moves to longer wavelength. The Raman spectra research shows an increase in orthorhombic distortion with progressive replacement of W sites in Bi2WO6 with Mo6+ ions. Compared to Bi2MoO6 and Bi2WO6 samples, Bi2Mo0.4W0.6O6 sample displayed best photocatalytic activity and cycling stability for degradation of RhB dye. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Bi2Mo0.4W0.6O6 sample can be synergetically linked to hierarchical hollow structure, enhanced light absorbance, and high carrier-separation efficiency. Additionally, the hollow Bi2MoxW1-xO6 microspheres formation can be attributed to the Kirkendall effect. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In recent years, nonprecious metallic Bi with the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect has attracted the attention of researchers in the field of photocatalysis and has been loaded onto the surface of various photocatalytic materials to study its effect on photocatalytic activity. In this work, the internal and surface of Bi2WO6 nanomaterials were modified by cleverly using the chelating and reducing properties of ethylene glycol (EG) to obtain photocatalytic materials with different metallic Bi modifications. A comprehensive analysis showed that modified Bi-BWO with a uniform distribution of metallic Bi was obtained by in situ etching on the surface of Bi2WO6 nanosheets, and the SPR effect of metallic Bi can be used to expand the light absorption range and improve the separation and migration efficiency of electrons and holes. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the Bi-BWO sample achieved 100 % degradation of a Rhodamine B (RhB) solution within 30 min, which was 25 % higher than that of the unmodified sample. Bi0 inside the crystal structure caused lattice defects and served as a complex center for photogenerated carriers, which decreased the photocatalytic efficiency. This study investigated the modification of different parts of photocatalytic materials with metallic Bi to introduce contrasting effects, developed a solution for in situ etching on the surface of modified bismuth-based photocatalytic materials, and provided a new idea to improve photocatalytic materials with cavities as the main active species.

Abstract:This study focuses on the design and synthesis of a novel ternary composite photocatalyst, Bi-Bi2O3/CdWO4, using a one-step solvothermal method. A comprehensive investigation was conducted to analyze the morphology, specific surface area, structure, optical property, and photoelectric chemical property of the composite. The incorporation of Bi-Bi2O3 was found to significantly impact the growth of CdWO4 crystals, resulting in a morphological transformation into nanoparticles. This morphological change has been shown to enhance the specific surface area of the catalyst, thereby improving its catalytic performance. Furthermore, the incorporation of Bi-Bi2O3 has been demonstrated to greatly enhance the light absorption capability of CdWO4, which also favored the photocatalytic N2 fixation (PNF) reaction. However, after conducting a comprehensive analysis of different Bi-BiO3/CdWO4 and two reference samples Bi/CdWO4 and Bi2O3/CdWO4, it was determined that the improvement of photogenerated charge carrier separation efficiency is the decisive factor determining the performance of the ternary composite catalyst. The closely bound Bi-Bi2O3 on the CdWO4 surface triggers the formation of a heterojunction structure at their interface. By analyzing the band structure of CdWO4 and Bi2O3, it is suggested that the heterojunction operates through a Z-scheme mechanism. The Bi metal serves as a bridge that intimately binds CdWO4 and Bi2O3, facilitating the rapid migration of electrons and improved charge separation. Therefore, the Bi-Bi2O3/CdWO4 composite exhibits high performance in PNF reactions. The optimal 7.5% Bi-Bi2O3/CdWO4 catalyst presents a PNF rate of 434.9 μmol L−1 g−1 h−1 under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 4.9 times that of pure CdWO4. These findings from this study may offer valuable insights into the design and synthesis of new photocatalysts for PNF.

Abstract:Nanosized Bi2WO6, PbWO4 and ZnWO4 photocatalysts were synthesized by a mild hydrothermal crystallization process. The physical and photophysical properties of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, Brunauer–Emmet–Teller surface area and porosity measurements, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectra, and diffused reflectance spectroscopy. The rhodamine-B photodegradation in aqueous medium was employed as a probe reaction to test the photoactivities of the as-prepared samples under four irradiation wavelengths. Bi2WO6 not only presented the photocatalytic activity in the wide spectral scope, including UV and visible light but also exhibited the strong photosensitized capability to transform RhB under visible light irradiation (λ>490nm). ZnWO4 only displayed relatively high photoactivity under UV irradiation. However, PbWO4 showed poor photoactivity under any light irradiation. On the basis of the calculated density functional theory (DFT), the photocatalytic mechanisms were discussed.

Abstract:WO3-Bi2WO6 heterostructures were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method using WO3 nanorods and Bi(NO3)(3) solution as raw materials. The Bi2WO6 nanosheets uniformly anchored onto the surface of the WO3 nanorods. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was assessed for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol under solar light irradiation. The WO3-Bi2WO6 heterostructures showed higher photocatalytic activities than pure WO3 and Bi2WO6. As the content of Bi2WO6 increased, the photocatalytic activity of the WO3-Bi2WO6 heterojunction was enhanced and the optimal sample was WO3-Bi2WO6 with a nWO(3) : nBi(3+) mole ratio of 5 : 3. The efficient separation of electron-hole pairs because of the staggered band potentials between WO3 and Bi2WO6 may account for the higher photoactivity of WO3-Bi2WO6 hybrid structures. Radical scavenger experiments indicate that holes (h(+)) and superoxide radicals (O-center dot(2)-) were the main active species for RhB degradation during the photocatalytic process.
In-situ construction of Bi2WO6/BiOCl p-n heterojunction film for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:Heterojunction composite construction has been considered as a viable method to improve photocatalytic performance. In this study, a kind of highly efficient 2D/0D Bi2WO6/BiOCl p-n heterojunction film with boosted photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance was synthesized on Bi plate via in-situ electrochemical ion-exchange hydrothermal method. Furthermore, the XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM and other techniques were carried out to evaluate as-synthesized films. Our findings indicate that Bi2WO6/BiOCl composite film, with close border contact between Bi2WO6 and BiOCl surfaces, should be conducive to achieve excellent separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Finally, the formation mechanism of p-n heterostructure is demonstrated using XPS core-level alignment method. This work should offer new perspectives into the immobilization method of efficient powder catalysts and the photocatalytic CO2 reduction mechanism of p-n heterojunction films.

Abstract:Novel Bi2W2O9 and Bi2Mo2O9 with irregular polyhedron structure were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Compared to ordinary Bi2WO6 and Bi2MoO6, the modified structure of Bi2W2O9 and Bi2Mo2O9 were observed, which led to an enhancement of photocatalytic performance. To investigate the possible mechanism of enhancing photocatalytic efficiency, the crystal structure, morphology, elemental composition, and optical properties of Bi2WO6, Bi2MO6, Bi2W2O9, and Bi2Mo2O9 were examined. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy revealed the visible-light absorption ability of Bi2WO6, Bi2MO6, Bi2W2O9, and Bi2Mo2O9. Photoluminescence (PL) and photocurrent indicated that Bi2W2O9 and Bi2Mo2O9 pose an enhanced ability of photogenerated electron–hole pairs separation. Radical trapping experiments revealed that photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals were the main active species. It can be conjectured that the promoted photocatalytic performance related to the modified structure, and a possible mechanism was discussed in detail.

Abstract:We reported a novel W-based oxide NaBi(WO4)(2) with WO4 tetrahedral crystal structure as a photocatalyst for decomposition of 2-propanol. The physical characteristics of the sample were examined by XRD, BET measurement and SEM, respectively. The band gap of NaBi(WO4)(2) was determined to be 3.6 eV according to the diffuse reflectance spectra of the sample. The photocatalytic activity of NaBi(WO4)(2) was confirmed by decomposing 2-propanol into acetone and CO2. It showed a higher acetone generation rate (211 ppm h(-1)) in contrast to that of WO3 (120 ppm h(-1)), which consisted of WO6 octahedra. Their electronic structures were further investigated by the plane-wave based density function theory. The results suggested that the crystal field (WO6 and WO4) significantly influenced the electronic structures and hence affected the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Bi(2)WO(6) ordered porous film with open pores, an example of a photocatalytically active ternary metal oxide under visible-light irradiation, is prepared using a simple and reproducible route. The ordered porous Bi(2)WO(6) films exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity and photocurrent coversion efficiency than nonporous Bi(2)WO(6) films under visible-light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm).
A Novel Bi2WO6/DMPBP[5] Composite for Cyclic Adsorption and Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutant in Water

Abstract:The typical photocatalyst Bi2WO6(BWO)has low energy efficiency due to its low specific surface area (SSA) and high photogenerated electron/hole recombination rate. In this study, a three-dimensional spherical BWO/DMPBP[5] composite was synthesized by loading DMpillar[5]arene-based porous polymer (DMPBP[5]) on BWO through hydrothermal method to correct these deficiencies. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that the modified BWO transformed into three-dimensional spherical composite. Furthermore, BET surface area analysis further proved that compared with the original photocatalyst BWO whose SSA is 19 m(2)center dot g(-1), the optimized composite BWO-7% exposes more SSA with a value of 134 m(2)center dot g(-1), endowing it more adsorption and photocatalytic active sites. Results showed that photocatalytic reaction rate constants of BWO-7% increased by more than 10 times, compared with that of BWO. This significant improvement was due to the introduction of DMPBP[5], which could concentrate organic pollutants, thus reduce the distance between contaminants and the active site. More importantly, after DMPBP[5] was loaded, BWO/W5O14 heterojunction was formed. In the detection process, we found that oxygen vacancy was introduced in it, which was more conducive to the separation of electron/hole pairs and improved the photocatalytic performance of visible light. In addition, the adaptability to inorganic salts, pH and recycling performance of BWO composites were excellent. Altogether, this study provides the possibility for the application of new adsorption-photodegradation materials in photocatalytic water treatment.
