Abstract:Metamaterials are artificial structures that have been engineered to exhibit properties that do not occur naturally in conventional materials. They were firstly made up of periodic unit cells that interact with electromagnetic (EM) waves to manipulate their behavior, showing extraordinary phenomena like EM cloaking, negative index, beam deflection and so on. In recent years, the concept of metamaterial has been penetrating in various physical domain and various metamaterials with versatile functionalities have been proposed and fabricated by 3D printing technology to manipulate the interactions between matter and electromagnetic, thermal, acoustic, and mechanical energy. With the increasing of structural complexity, material types, precision additive manufacturing serve as a powerful tool to achieve novel metamaterials with extraordinary performance and fusion of functionalities. In this paper, we reviewed the remarkable properties enabled by 3D printed metamaterials in different fields, and analyzed the consilience relationship between structure, function, and manufacturing process.

Abstract:Multifunctional metamaterials with unique electromagnetic and mechanical properties are highly desired in many fields, including space exploration and satellite communication, where broad tunability of the working frequency and controllable mechanical deformation properties are usually necessary. In this study, we propose a metasurface exhibiting simultaneous electromagnetic frequency selection capability and isotropic negative/positive/near-zero thermal expansion. The metasurface is designed based on chiral structures and is fabricated via 4D printing of continuous fibre composites. Both the effective thermal expansion coefficient and electromagnetic transmission band were investigated in different structural parameters based on theoretical calculation, finite element analysis simulations and experiments. The measured results were in good agreement with the theoretical data which reveal the influence law of structural parameters on thermal deformation and electromagnetic frequency control. Thus, the electromagnetic functionality of the metasurface can be thermally controlled and is expected to be useful in extreme situations where the coupling of multiphysical fields is required.

Abstract:The function of the metamaterials is determined by the configuration and spatial arrangement of the lattice microstructure. Once manufactured, the geometry and function of the metamaterials are irreversible and cannot be adapted to the environment to be variable and adjustable. This paper studies a shape-reconfigurable, functionally deployable, mechanically adjustable and reusable intelligent multi-stable metamaterial. Based on a 4D printing method that combines digital additive manufacturing technique and thermally induced shape memory polymer exhibiting significant change in modulus of elasticity, this metamaterial is created with reconfigurable, self-expandable and mechanical properties adjustable features. The macroscopic deformation and the morphology change of the lattice microstructure on the metamaterial during the compression test are analyzed using experiment and finite element method. The adjustable, selectable, and controllable for micro-lattice in the metamaterial during deformation and recovery can be achieved by microstructure gradients and composite design methods. The new micro-lattice programmable mechanical metamaterial has excellent versatility and the ability to adapt to environmental changes. This 4D printed multi-stable metamaterial has broad application prospects, such as in soft robots, smart damping interfaces, aerospace adjustable and expandable structures, and tunable function devices.

Abstract:Considerable attentions have been attracted to the implement of electromagnetic (EM) absorbing metamaterial in the past decade. Most of EM absorbing metamaterials focused on the design methods of increasing the broadband performance. However, high-efficient tunable EM absorbing metamaterials still remain a significant challenge. In this work, a 3D-printed high-efficient tunable liquid metal-based EM absorbing metamaterial was designed and demonstrated successfully. A square cavity with four gradient-depth T-shaped microchannels structure was considered as the unit cell of absorbing metamaterial. By taking advantage of the extraordinary fluidity and high conductivity of liquid metal, the high-efficient tunable capability with nearly perfect absorbance from 4.42 to 10.45 GHz and the absorbance over 95% from 3.13 to 4.44 GHz were obtained numerically and experimentally. The simulated results of absorbance agreed well with the measured ones. The designed absorbing metamaterial provides an outstanding way to achieve continuously tunable work frequency in a broadband frequency range, promoting potential application in multi-frequency microwave filters and electromagnetic shielding fields.

Abstract:Customizable and reconfigurable mechanical behavior is critical for self-adaptive low-frequency vibration isolators operating in dynamic environments. Herein, the mechanical metamaterials with customizable and configurable geometries, material stiffnesses, cushioning properties, and vibration isolation capabilities are fabricated using a 4D printed multi-material system. The metastructure is characterized by the connection of a flexural beam structure and a collapsible straw structure. At the unit level, the stiffness characteristics are analyzed by geometric and theoretical mechanical models. The effect of geometric parameters and material composition on the stiffness behavior of multi-material metamaterials is investigated. Metamaterials' customizable and configurable characteristics are examined by the quasi-static compression mechanical properties, cushion performances, and vibration isolation capabilities under varying geometric parameters and material compositions. Finally, the reprogrammable stiffness of the metamaterial is demonstrated through the modification of geometric parameters utilizing the shape memory properties in 4D printing. The customizable and configurable metamaterials inspire the next generation of cushioning and vibration isolators, holding significant promise for applications demanding superior vibration isolation performances in dynamic environments.

Abstract:Mechanical metamaterials with immense specific energy absorption and high specific strength are extensively being applied in engineering fields, including bone tissue scaffolds, aerospace and automotive engineering. Many structural design strategies have been developed to improve their mechanical properties. The lattice metamaterials with a tremendous specific energy absorption capacity exhibit continual platform stress after initial yield and before densification. Here, combined with bionic design, we designed and fabricated a series of mechanical metamaterial with tension-dominated mechanical behavior which can assimilate enormous amounts of energy while maintaining a low density. The design strategy relied on the network construction in the periodic grid topology, which took the microstructure with several beams as the building block connecting the grid nodes. The mechanical properties can be adjusted by changing topology parameters. Additionally, the metamaterials fabricated by 4D printing technology show intelligent properties, which can jump from one mode to another under external stimulation. It was worth mentioning that the shape memory effect (SME) also endowed the material with certain self-healing properties. Excellent compressive resistance, energy absorption, shock absorption and shape memory effect suggest the application prospect in engineering fields.

Abstract:Recently, 3-D metamaterials with intricate geometries have received an ultrawide range of attractions due to the additional degrees of freedom to manipulate electromagnetic waves and thus expand the functionalities of metadevices. Nevertheless, the fabrication of 3-D metamaterials in the terahertz (THz) regime remains to be challenging. Here, we have proposed a simple and effective method to fabricate those 3-D metamaterials by integrating 3-D printing technology and liquid metal filling process. As a proof of concept, two kinds of typical metamaterials with broadband and multiband characteristics are fabricated by the as-presented fabrication strategy. The former consists of multilayer disks while the latter is comprised of orthogonally crossed vertical split rings. Experimental measurements validate that the physical responsive spectra agree well with the theoretical simulation. Given the simple and low-cost features of our proposed fabrication method for THz metamaterials, this method provides a promising approach for the development of THz meta-devices.

Abstract:： High-performance metamaterial absorbers have attracted enormous interests both in academia and industry in last few years.The metamaterial structures are formed by periodic unit cells that can realize impedance match between metamaterial absorbers and free space to enhance the electromagnetic absorption.Metamaterials can be widely used in various military or civil realm, such as stealth technology, communication antennas and microwave imaging.Based on impedance matching principle, a fabrication method based on the fused deposition modeling of 3D printing technology to achieve metamaterial absorbing structures is proposed.Metamaterial absorbers composed of 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) based substrate with cavities and distilled water possessing excellent electromagnetic properties is precisely designed and fabricated.Finally, a high-performance absorber which shows an absorptivity higher than 90% over an ultra-broad band from 8.2 GHz to 30.0 GHz is acquired.It is also indicated that the metamaterial absorber is polarization independent and can maintain high absorptivity within a wide range of incidence angle.The absorbers proposed here with advantages of high performance, low profile, and light weight provide a novel method of design and fabrication which may promote the research on high-performance absorbing structures.
Novel 4D-printed multi-stable metamaterials: programmability of force-displacement behaviour and deformation sequence

Abstract:The unique properties of metamaterials are determined by the configuration and spatial arrangement of artificially designed unit structures. However, the configuration and mechanical properties of conventional metamaterials are challenging to reverse and adjust. Based on curved beams, two types of novel three-dimensional (3D) multi-stable metamaterials with reconfigurable deformation and tunable mechanical properties are designed and fabricated using a four-dimensional (4D) printing method. The effects of temperature and curved-beam thickness on the force-displacement curves and multi-stable snapping sequence of the 3D multi-stable metamaterials are investigated by finite-element analysis (FEA) and experiments. In addition, based on the designed four-branch multi-stable metamaterials, three- and six-branched multi-stable structures are designed by changing the number of curved-beam branches. It is shown that, owing to shape memory effects, the 3D multi-stable metamaterials can realize mechanical programmability, and the multi-stable deformation sequence can be precisely regulated by varying the temperature and curved-beam thickness. These 4D-printed multi-stable metamaterials provide valuable contributions to the design of programmable multi-stable metamaterials and their applications in soft robots and intelligent structures. Wide-angle Microwave Absorption Properties of Multilayer Metamaterial Fabricated by 3D Printing

Abstract:Conventional absorbing materials have always been challenged by the technical difficulty of effectively absorbing (<-10 dB) oblique incident electromagnetic waves in a wide frequency domain. In this study, 3D printing technology was used to combine metamaterials with multilevel gradient absorbing materials. To provide good impedance matching, the multilayer structure absorber was designed with a gradient index of characteristic impedance by adjusting the geometric parameters of the unit cell and the distribution of spherical carbonyl iron powder enhanced polyether ether ketone (CI-PEEK). The results show that the prepared 3D-printed multilayer metamaterial effectively absorbed electromagnetic waves across a wide range of incident angles (0 degrees-50 degrees) in the bandwidth of 8-18 GHz. Compared with the current technology on wave absorbing materials, this work showed a considerable improvement in the effective absorption of wide-angle electromagnetic waves and the integrated manufacturing of absorption composite materials with the desired characteristics. Abstract:Electromagnetic absorbing metastructure with low frequency and broadband absorbing capacity is desir-able for scientific community and real-life application. Here, we designed a lightweight hierarchical wave -absorbing metastructure by replacing the facets of the stepped structure with smaller-scale square grid. The electromagnetic characteristics of high-efficiency absorption in low and high frequency ranges were also studied. The specific dielectric constant and dielectric loss were found to be the key factors of low -fre-quency absorption, which was realized by regulating the proportion of Ag-Cu alloy-based composite ma-terial based on fused deposition modeling 3D printing technology. The hierarchical gradient design for the wave-absorbing metastructure is helpful to not only being lightweight but also enhancing the electro-magnetic wave absorbing capacity. The existing heterogeneous interfaces of flaky alloy particles and spheric polymer particles also enhance the dielectric properties of composite material. The fabricated wave -ab-sorbing metastructure sample with the bulk density of 0.5 g/cm3 shows high-efficiency absorption in 2.5-40 GHz, and the absorbing performance keeps stable even though the incident angle varied in the range of 50 degrees. This paper provides a convenient realization method of absorbing metastructure with low frequency broadband absorption performance, which has outstanding practical application value.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to introduce tunable continuous-stable metamaterials with reversible thermo-mechanical memory operations by four-dimensional (4D) printing technology. They are developed based on an understanding on glassy-rubbery behaviors of shape memory polymers and hot/cold programming derived from experiments and theory. Fused decomposition modeling as a well-known 3D printing technology is implemented to fabricate mechanical metamaterials. They are experimentally tested revealing elastic-plastic and hyper-elastic behaviors in low and high temperatures at a large deformation range. A computational design tool is developed by implementing a 3D phenomenological constitutive model coupled with a geometrically nonlinear finite element method. Structural Broadband Absorbing Metamaterial Based on Three-Dimensional Printing Technology

Abstract:In order to verify the feasibility of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology in preparing the metamaterial absorbers with complex structure, a three-layer broadband absorbing metamaterial is designed and fabricated by 3D printing technology. The surface layer and middle layer of the metamaterial are composed of periodic arrays with different unit dimensions and the bottom layer of a slab structure. The optimized thickness of the metamaterial is 4.7 mm. A composite absorbent which consists of carbonyl iron powder and nylon is used to fabricate the absorber. In experiment, the obtained absorber is vertically irradiated by an electromagnetic (EM) wave. Two strong absorption peaks at 5.3 GHz and 14.1 GHz are achieved, with the reflection losses of -15.1 dB and -12.5 dB, respectively. The superposition of the two absorption peaks results in a reflection loss below -10 dB in a range from 4 to 18 GHz. The effective EM parameters of the surface layer and the middle layer are calculated by the S parameter inversion method. An effective model of the three-layer structure absorber is proposed and its reflectivity is calculated by using a multilayer structure reflectivity formula. The calculated reflectivity agrees well with the measured one. The absorbing and resonance mechanisms of the two absorption peaks are investigated by analyzing the dynamic distributions of power density loss, electric field and magnetic field. It can be clearly confirmed that the reflection losses at 5.3 GHz and 14.1 GHz are primarily concentrated on the bottom layer and surface layer, and the broadband absorption performance can be derived from the superposition of broadband absorptions of the three absorbing layers. Meanwhile, the strong electric coupling effect between the adjacent units in the surface layer is demonstrated by analyzing the electric-field distributions, which indicates that the strong reflection loss at 14.1 GHz is mainly caused by the electric response. The multiple scattering effects among the three layers are also considered according to the magnetic field distributions at two resonance frequencies. It is shown that there are two magnetic responses at 5.3 GHz and 14.1 GHz, respectively, and the multiple scattering contributes to increasing the EM wave propagation distance and enhancing the power loss. The designed absorbing metamaterials in this paper achieve good broadband absorption performances, particularly in the low frequency band. Combined with 3D printing rapid technology, a promising route to constructing 3D absorbing metamaterials with complex structures is proposed, which would be of great significance and broad practical prospect.

Abstract:light-weight metastructures that possess excellent electromagnetic(EM) absorbing performance and high temperature mechanical property for real-life applications are highly desirable, but not yet realized to date. Herein, a novel metastructure, which enables to achieve both excellent EM absorbing ability and preeminent mechanical property, was proposed and realized experimentally. Benefiting from the flexibility of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technique, the EM metastructure was fabricated with a distinct perforated Poly Ether-Ether-Ketone (PEEK) dielectric substrate attaching Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) resonator. The perforated PEEK substrate realized not only being lightweight but also increasing the EM absorbing bandwidth. Moreover, owing to extraordinary mechanical, thermal and physical performance of PEEK material, the proposed metastructure also demonstrated good compression strength in high temperature range. This work opens a new avenue to promote the practical application of EM absorbing metastructure.
A wide-angle broadband electromagnetic absorbing metastructure using 3D printing technology

Abstract:Gradient composite metastructures have been demonstrated in effectively improving the microwave absorbing performance. However, the preparation of the complex structures still remains challenging. Herein, a complex gradient composite microwave absorbing metastructure is designed and fabricated by the low cost, high-efficiency fused deposition modeling of 3D printing technologies. The metastructure is composed of flaky carbonyl iron particles and Polyether-ether-ketone composite which demands only 50% loss material mass addition. Structural parameters are investigated and optimized for absorbing bandwidth and reflectivity intensity. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that the designed complex gradient metastructure with the thickness of 10 mm can achieve the-10 dB absorbing bandwidth in the frequency range from 5.1 to 40 GHz, and the absorbing bandwidth corresponding to-15 dB in 7.7- 14.7 GHz and 22.6-36.3 GHz. Meanwhile, this metastructure also can maintain the broadband and strong microwave absorption with incident angle from 0 degrees to 55 degrees for transverse electric polarization and 0 degrees to 70 degrees for transverse magnetic polarization. Moreover, the proposed metastructure is also demonstrated with good compression strength which shows preferable mechanical stability. Abstract:Electromagnetic devices have been widely used in the fields of information communication, medical treatment, electrical engineering, and national defense, and their properties are strongly dependent on the constituent electromagnetic materials. Conversely, electromagnetic metamaterials (EMMs), which are artificially engineered with distinctive electromagnetic properties, can overcome the limitations of natural materials owing to their structural advantages. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is the most effective technique for fabricating EMM devices with different geometric parameters and associated properties. However, conventional 3D-printed EMM devices may lack manufacturing flexibility and environmental adaptability to different physical stimuli, such as electric and magnetic fields. Four-dimensional (4D) printing is an ideal technique for schemes to integrate structural design with intelligent materials environmentally adaptive to external fields, for example, the printed components can change shape under electric stimulation. Given the rapid advancements in the EMM field, this paper first reviews typical EMM devices, their design theories, and underlying principles. Subsequently, it presents various EMM structural topologies and manufacturing technologies, emphasizing the feasibility of combining 3D and 4D printing. In addition, we highlight the important applications of EMMs and their future trends and the challenges associated with functional EMMs and additive manufacturing.

Abstract:The emergence of metamaterial has provided an unprecedented ability to manipulate electromagnetic waves, especially in the terahertz band where there is a lack of natural response materials. However, most metamaterials are fixed single function due to the fixed structure at the beginning of design. The paper reports a reconfigurable multi-functional terahertz metamaterial with variable structures based on mortise and tenon mechanism. And a hybrid 3D printing method based on FDM and E-jet is proposed to fabricate the metamaterials, which simplifies the processing process, improves the speed, and reduces the cost compared to traditional semiconductor processing methods. Through flexible mortise and tenon connections, the metamaterial can achieve: (1) narrowband transmission and broadband absorption; (2) perfect reflection; (3) narrowband reflection and broadband absorption. Relying on ingenious design and processing, the multi-functional metamaterials are expected to be widely used in fields such as electromagnetic shielding, radar stealth, communication and so on.

Abstract:Metamaterial absorber (MA) with resistive pattern shows broadband absorbing performance. The PLA and 3D-printable copper-based conductive composite were selected to fabricate the perforated substrate and resistive pattern of the designed metamaterial absorber, which had the characteristics of ultrathin, low density, and broad absorbing bandwidth. Foremost, such a complex perforated structure can be fully fabricated by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing, which realizes convenient fabrication of metamaterial absorber with conductive material as well as improves manufacturing accuracy and reliability.

Abstract:Auxetic mechanical metamaterials, which expand transversally when axially stretched, are widely used in flexible electronics and aerospace. However, these chiral metamaterials suffer from three severe limitations as a typical auxetic metamaterials: narrow strain range, non‐tunable mechanical behaviors, and fixed properties after fabrication. In this work, 4D printing chiral metamaterials with tunable, programmable, and reconfigurable properties are developed. The deformation mode transforms from bending dominated to stretching dominated under large deformation, leading to the stress–deformation (σ–λ) behavior of the auxetic metamaterials similar to those of the biomaterials ("J"‐shaped), such as tissues or organs. The programmability and reconfigurability of the developed chiral metamaterials allow mechanical behavior to change between different biomaterials with high precision. Furthermore, scaffolds with personalized mechanical properties as well as configurations and metamaterials‐based light‐emitting diode integrated devices demonstrate potential applications in tissue engineering and programmable flexible electronics.
