Abstract:The Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province, People's Republic of China has yielded a diverse fauna of non-avian dinosaurs, but is dominated by small-bodied taxa. Here, we describe a series of isolated teeth from the Lujiatun Beds of the formation that are referable to a basal titanosauriform sauropod. Some of the teeth possess a distinctive circular boss on the lingual surface, which suggests that they are referable to cf. Euhelopus sp. This identification provides some additional support for biostratigraphical correlations between the Jehol Group and the Mengyin Formation of Shandong Province that suggest an Early Cretaceous age for the latter unit. Moreover, the titanosauriform affinities of the teeth provide further evidence for the dominance of this sauropod clade in eastern Asia during the Cretaceous.

Abstract:Titanosauriform sauropod dinosaurs were once considered rare in the Upper Cretaceous of Asia, but a number of titanosauriforms from this stratigraphic interval have been discovered in China in recent years. In fact, all adequately known Cretaceous Asian sauropods are titanosauriforms, but only a few have been well studied, lending significance to any new anatomical information that can be extracted from Asia's Cretaceous sauropod record. Here we give a detailed description of some titanosauriform bones recovered recently from the Upper Cretaceous Daijiaping Formation of Tianyuan County, Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province, southern China. The occurrence of this material in Hunan increases the known geographic range of titanosauriforms in eastern Asia. Although all of the specimens discussed in this paper can be assigned to Titanosauriformes at least tentatively, some bones display a limited number of features that are more typical of basal sauropods and/or derived diplodocoids, suggesting complex patterns of character evolution within Neosauropoda.
Isolated Dinosaur Teeth from the Lower Cretaceous Shahai and Fuxin Formations of Northeastern China

Abstract:Isolated dinosaur teeth recovered from seven localities near Fuxin (western Liaoning Province, northeastern China) are described. They come from sediments belonging to the Shahai and Fuxin formations, considered to be Aptian to Albian in age. Seven taxa have been recognized. They include the oviraptorosaur Incisivosaurus, dromaeosaurid theropods, Euhelopus-like sauropods, as well as indeterminate nodosaurid, ankylosaurid, iguanodontoid and basal neoceratopsian ornithischians. The Shahai and Fuxin dinosaur faunas show the persistence of some Jehol biota taxa such as the highly specialised Incisivosaurus, basal titanosauriform sauropods, basal neoceratopsians and some dromaeosaurids, and the addition of more derived iguanodontoids and ankylosaurians. The persistence of some dinosaurs of the Jehol Biota into the Shahai and Fuxin formations suggests a long term stability of Liaoning terrestrial environments during the Early Cretaceous. Despite sampling bias and the rather small sample that must be taken into account, teeth abundances show a significant compositional difference between the localities of the Shahai and Fuxin formations, neoceratopsian teeth representing one third of dinosaur tooth remains in the Shahai Formation whereas they are totally absent in the Fuxin Formation. Ankylosaur teeth, in contrast, represent 3% of total remains in the Shahai Formation, whereas they seem to be the only herbivorous dinosaurs in the Fuxin Formation with 40% of the total number of teeth (the rest being theropod dinosaur teeth). Although a difference in micro-environmental conditions between Shahai and Fuxin localities may at least partly explain such pattern, the unusual and unbalanced faunal composition of Fuxin localities remains enigmatic and will need further field collecting in order to be clarified. A New Titanosaurian Sauropod from Late Cretaceous of Nei Mongol, China

Abstract:A specimen collected from the Upper Cretaceous Erlian Formation of Nei Mongol (Inner Mongolia), China, represents a new genus and species of titanosaurian sauropod. The new taxon is named and described on the basis of the holotype and the only known specimen, which comprises several dorsal, sacral, and caudal vertebrae, several dorsal ribs, one anterior chevron, and much of the pelvis. Diagnostic features of the new species include a thick ridge extending down from the postzygapophysis on the lateral surface of the neural arch of the posterior dorsal vertebrae, a transversely oriented accessory lamina present between the anterior centroparapophyseal limina and the lateral centraprezygapophyseal lamina of the posterior dorsal vertebrae, long, anteroventrally directed caudal rib that bears two distinctive fossae on its posterior margin on the anterior caudal vertebrae and a prominent vertical ridge above the pubic peduncle on the medial surface of the ilium, among others. The ilium is pneumatic, a feature not common among non-avian dinosaurs. The new taxon has an unusual combination of primitive and derived character states. Preliminary character analysis shows a complex character distribution within the Titanosauriformes. Recent titanosauriform discoveries suggest that a significant radiation occurred in Asia early in the titanosauriform evolution.

Abstract:A specimen collected from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of western Liaoning, China, represents a new genus and species of troodontid theropod. The new taxon is named and described on the basis of the holotype and the only known specimen, which comprises an articulated skeleton with the presacral vertebral, shoulder girdle and forelimbs missing as preserved. Diagnostic features of the new species include nasals that are sinusoid in lateral view, absence of a passage connecting the antorbital and maxillary fenestrae, relatively large teeth, plate-like chevrons forming a band along most of the length of the tail, and a long neck between the femoral head and shaft. The temporal constraints of the three paravian groups (Troodontidae, Dromaeosauridae and Aves) combined with the character distributions among the earliest known troodontids indicate a rapid evolution at the base of the Troodontidae.

Abstract:Large quadrupedal sauropod dinosaurs of the group Titanosauria were globally distributed in the Late Cretaceous. Many titanosaurian species have been discovered in eastern Asia, but most of them are controversial and represented by poorly preserved remains. Here, we describe a new titanosaur, Gandititan cavocaudatus gen. et sp. nov., based on a partial skeleton recovered from the lower Upper Cretaceous of Ganxian County, Ganzhou City, southern China, and comprising six articulated cervical vertebrae, two partial dorsal vertebrae, and a complete sacrum preserved in articulation with the first 17 caudal vertebrae and part of the right pelvis. Gandititan can be diagnosed on the basis of the following autapomorphies: long and narrow fossae present on the dorsal and ventral parts of the lateral surfaces of the cervical centra, sacral neural spines forming a dorsal platform with wave-shaped lateral margins, anteriormost six caudal vertebrae with bifurcated neural spines, the presence of prominent triangular flanges on the transverse processes of the anteriormost caudal vertebrae, a pair of slit-like foramina present on the ventral surface of each anterior caudal centrum, lateral surfaces of neural arches strongly excavated, additional spinoprezygapophyseal laminae present, and a prominent lamina extending horizontally between the bases of the pre- and postzygapophyses in some anterior caudal vertebrae. An expanded phylogenetic analysis places Gandititan as the sister taxon to Abdarainurus, within a clade of non-lithostrotian titanosaurs that also includes the Chinese titanosaurs Dongyangosaurus, Baotianmansaurus and Huabeisaurus, as well as the Argentine titanosaur Andesaurus. Such results imply the possible existence of a previously unrecognized group of titanosaurs in eastern Asia, and potential dispersal of titanosaurs between Asia and South America during the mid-Cretaceous.

Abstract:Ankylosaurines are the iconic armoured dinosaurs that characterize terrestrial vertebrate faunas in the Late Cretaceous of Asia and Laramidia (western North America). The earliest members of this clade are known from the early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian–Santonian) times of Asia, but little consensus has emerged as to how they are related to the anatomically derived and chronologically younger forms. In southeastern China, the Cretaceous red sand beds crop out across basins from Zhejiang to Guandong provinces. However, the horizons corresponding to the early Late Cretaceous stages remain poorly sampled. Here, we report the first definitive vertebrate skeleton 3⁄4 let alone that of an armoured dinosaur 3⁄4 from the Coniacian/Turonian Ganzhou Formation, Datai yinliangis gen. et sp. nov. Despite the immature ontogenetic status of the type materials, D. yingliangis can be diagnosed with autapomorphic traits in the cranial caputegulae (such as double horns on the quadratojugal) and extensive gular osteoderms. Morphologically, it is intermediate between the chronologically older ankylosaurids from Asia (e.g., Crichtonpelta and Jinyunpelta) and derived post-Cenomanian ankylosaurines (e.g., Pinacosaurus). Phylogenetic analyses broadly corroborate this assessment. The new taxon either falls in the grade of Asian ankylosaurines proximal to the lineages of derived forms or forms a sister lineage to Pinacosaurus. Based on these insights, Datai makes a significant addition to the early Late Cretaceous vertebrate fauna from southeastern China and highlights the future potential in this region for improved understanding of the origin and early evolution of ankylosaurines.
A New Titanosauriform Sauropod with an Unusual Tail from the Lower Cretaceous of Northeastern China

Abstract:A new titanosauriform sauropod, Ruixinia zhangi gen. et sp. nov., is described. It was recovered from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province, northeastern China. Ruixinia is characterized by a unique combination of characters, including the following autapomorphies: distinct foramina present at the anterodorsal corner of the pleurocoels of the mid-posterior dorsals; anterior caudal neural spines bifid; anterior caudal neural spines with projecting subtriangular processes on the anterior margins of the neural spines; distinct grooves present on the lateral surface of neural arches in Caudals 2-12, just dorsal to the base of the caudal ribs; a transition point present between Caudal 22 and Caudal 23 with Caudals 1-22 much larger than more posterior caudals in size; distalmost six caudals fused; Chevron 18 with a bifurcated posterior process; Chevron 20 approximately pentagonal in lateral view; Chevrons 23-36 plank-shaped and unfused distally; lateral bulge developed on the lateral surface of the posterior lobe of the ilium; posterior margin of the tibial shaft strongly convex. Phylogenetic analysis places Ruixinia within the Titanosauriformes. The new find increases the diversity of early-branching Titanosauriformes in China and highlights the tail morphological diversity within this clade.
A New Genus of Psittacosauridae (dinosauria : Ornithopoda) and the Origin and Early Evolution of Marginocephalian Dinosaurs

Abstract:An almost complete juvenile dinosaur skull with lower jaw was discovered from the Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation in Beipiao, Liaoning Province, China. Here, the specimen is described and a cladistic analysis is performed in order to find its phylogenetic relationships. The result shows that this specimen represents a new genus of Psittacosauridae, Hongshanosaurus houi, gen. et sp. nov., and confirms the monophyletic status for Ceratopsia and Marginocephalia. However, Heterodontosaurus is found to be the sister taxon to Marginocephalia, rather than a basal Ornithopoda.
A new titanosaurian sauropod from the Late Cretaceous strata of Shan-dong Province

Abstract:Specimen ZJZ- 57, a nearly complete sauropod humerus excavated from the Upper Cretaceous Wangshi Group of Zhucheng area, Shandong Province, is described in this paper. Some derived features, such as a lateral bulge at the proximal one-third position of the lateral margin and a deltopectoral crest markedly expanded distally, indicate that ZJZ-57 represents a member of Titanosauria. However, it differs from all other titanosaurian sauropods in the following combined features: the proximal portion is strongly expanded, reaching 55% of the total length of the bone, and the humerus is a robust bone, with a robustness index (RI) of 0.39. Based on this specimen, the authors erect a new sauropod taxon: Zhuchengtitan zangjiazhuangensis gen. et sp. nov. This new taxon is possibly more closely related to Opisthocoelicaudia than to other known titanosaurian sauropods from Asia. This is the first ti-tanosaurian sauropod reported from the Upper Cretaceous strata of Shandong Province.
Large Theropod Teeth from the Upper Cretaceous of Jiangxi, Southern China

Abstract:Two isolated, large theropod teeth from the Upper Cretaceous Nanxiong Formation of Nankang County, Jiangxi Province, southern China, are described. Their crown heights (CH) are 76 and 91 mm, respectively. The smaller tooth is referable to the Tyrannosauridae based on its size and sub-oval cross-section (the crown base ratio (CBR) is about 0.72). The larger tooth is moderately laterally compressed (the CBR is about 0.47), with well defined longitudinal oriented enamel wrinkles at the basal halves of the mesial and distal margins, probably represents a previously unknown large theropod inhabited Asia during the Late Cretaceous. The recovered large theropod teeth add to the known diversity of vertebrates from the Upper Cretaceous Nanxiong Formation, southern China.

Abstract:The Yixian Formation (Lower Cretaceous) of Liaoning Province, China, is justifiably famous for its exceptionally preserved fauna, which includes a remarkable diversity of non-avian dinosaurs. Here, we provide the first detailed description of the cranial skeleton of the iguanodontian ornithopod Jinzhousaurus yangi. Many previously unrecorded features have been recognised, permitting a new and more robust diagnosis for this taxon, which is based on a suite of autapomorphic features. Jinzhousaurus and an unnamed sauropod represent the largest, but some of the least abundant, animals in the Jehol Biota, a situation that contrasts with many other Lower Cretaceous faunas in which large dinosaurs are common faunal components. This rarity may be due to either palaeoenvironmental constraints or taphonomic bias, although it is not possible to choose between these alternatives on the basis of current data.
Relatively low tooth replacement rate in a sauropod dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Ruyang Basin of central China

Abstract:Tooth replacement rate is an important feature related to feeding mechanics and food choices for dinosaurs. However, only a few data points are available for sauropod dinosaurs, partially due to rarity of relevant fossil material. Four somphospondylan sauropod species have been recovered from the Lower Cretaceous Aptian–Albian Haoling Formation in the Ruyang Basin, Henan Province of central China, but no cranial material has been reported except for a single crown. Here we report the discovery of the rostral portion of a left dentary with replacement teeth in its first five alveoli. Comparative anatomical study shows the partial dentary can be assigned to a member of early diverging somphospondylans. The non-destructive tooth length-based approach to estimating tooth formation time and replacement rate is adopted here. The estimated tooth replacement rate is 76 days, faster than that of Brachiosaurus (83 days) and much lower than typical late diverging lithostrotian titanosaurians (20 days). Thus, this discovery adds an intermediate tooth replacement rate in the evolution of titanosauriform sauropods and supports the idea that evolution of tooth replacement rate is clade-specific. This discovery also provides more information to understand the Ruyang sauropod assemblage, which includes one of the most giant dinosaurs to have walked our Earth ( Ruyangosaurus giganteus ).

Abstract:A specimen collected from the Lower Jurassic Lower Lufeng Formation of Yunnan, China. represents a new genus and species of therizinosauroid theropod. It comprises an incomplete left mandibular ramus and is here named Eshanosaurus deguchiianus. Distinctive characteristics of the new species include the presence of a round fenestra in the posterior portion of the dentary, small size of tooth denticles, and denticles almost perpendicular to the anterior and posterior edges of tooth crowns. The discovery of Eshanosaurus deguchiianus extends the record of therizinosauroids from the Early Cretaceous back to the Early Jurassic. Recent phylogenetic hypotheses placing therizinosauroids within Coelurosauria imply this is the oldest known coelurosaur, and that diversification of the group began much earlier than was previously indicated by the fossil record.
A Jurassic Tibetan theropod tooth reveals dental convergency and its implication for identifying fragmentary fossils

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau is among the least explored areas in terms of dinosaur paleontology in the world. Here, we report a dromaeosaurid-like tooth from the Middle Jurassic Dongdaqiao Formation at the eastern part of the plateau. The tooth exhibits dromaeosaurid dental features such as the absence of constriction at the cervix, a relatively small crown-to-base ratio, a strongly recurved apex, and it lacks large transverse and marginal undulations. Parsimonious phylogenetic analyses using both dentition-based and complete morphological matrices support a dromaeosaurid affinity for this tooth and place this Tibetan theropod as the sister taxon to Velociraptor. However, Bayesian tip dating analyses based on the velociraptorine affinity of the Tibetan tooth place the majority of the diversifications of early-diverging Paravian within �C or earlier than �C the Middle Jurassic, which conflicts with the paravian fossil record. Furthermore, our discriminant analysis based on morphometric data places the Tibetan theropod within Metriacanthosauridae. These results may suggest that the broad resemblance between the Tibetan specimen and velociraptorine teeth is due to convergent evolution. Based on our results, other dromaeosaurid-like teeth reported from the Middle and Late Jurassic deposits throughout Eurasia could potentially be from non-dromaeosaurids. This study suggests the presence of an early diverged theropod lineage with a wide geographical distribution and potentially a dromaeosaurid-like dietary niche. This study also highlights the importance of using multiple lines of data to identify fragmentary fossils.
Computed tomographic analysis of the dental system of three Jurassic ceratopsians and implications for the evolution of tooth replacement pattern and diet in early-diverging ceratopsians

Abstract:The dental system of ceratopsids is among the most specialized structure in Dinosauria by the presence of tooth batteries and high-angled wear surfaces. However, the origin of this unique dental system is poorly understood due to a lack of relative knowledge in early-diverging ceratopsians. Here we study the dental system of three earliest-diverging Chinese ceratopsians: Yinlong and Hualianceratops from the early Late Jurassic of Xinjiang and Chaoyangsaurus from the Late Jurassic of Liaoning Province. By micro-computed tomographic analyses, our study has revealed significant new information regarding the dental system, including no more than five replacement teeth in each jaw quadrant; at most one replacement tooth in each alveolus; nearly full resorption of the functional tooth root; and occlusion with low-angled, concave wear facets. Yinlong displays an increase in the number of maxillary alveoli and a decrease in the number of replacement teeth during ontogeny as well as the retention of functional tooth remnants in the largest individual. Chaoyangsaurus and Hualianceratops have slightly more replacement teeth than Yinlong . In general, early-diverging ceratopsians display a relatively slow tooth replacement rate and likely use gastroliths to triturate foodstuffs. The difference in dietary strategy might have influenced the tooth replacement pattern in later-diverging ceratopsians.

Abstract:A new titanosaurian taxon,Qingxiusaurus youjiangensis gen.et sp.nov.,from the Upper Cretaceous red beds of Nanning City,Guangxi,China is reported.It is represented by several postcranial elements including a cranial caudal neural spine,a pair of sternal plates,and a pair of humeri.The new taxon is diagnosed on the basis of a combination of following features:sim- ply-built cranial caudal neural spine elongated and paddle-shaped and the length ratio between sternal plate and humerus low(about 0.65).The new form,as well as other recently recovered titanosaurian taxa from Asia,indicates a highly modified postcranial morphology and large di- versity within this sauropod clade in the Cretaceous of Asia.

Abstract:Jiangxititan ganzhouensis gen. et sp. nov. is a new titanosaurian sauropod recovered from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Nanxiong Formation of Jiangxi Province, southern China. It is characterised by: (1) posterior cervical and anterior dorsal centra strongly compressed dorsoventrally; (2) accessory horizontal laminae present within the anterior dorsal pleurocoels; (3) posterior cervical and anterior dorsal neural arches low; (4) posterior cervical and anterior dorsal neural spines deeply bifurcated and widely separated; (5) inverted 'V' lamina formed by the left and right medial spinoprezygapophyseal laminae present at the anterior margin of the bifid point in posteriormost cervical and anteriormost dorsal neural spines; (6) triangular fossa formed by the metapophysis, medial and lateral spinoprezygapophyseal laminae present at the anterior margins of the posteriormost cervical and anteriormost dorsal neural spines; (7) postzygapophyses in the posterior cervical vertebrae fan-shaped; (8) medial and lateral spinopostzygapophyseal laminae present in the anterior dorsal vertebrae; and (9) anterior dorsal rib short and gracil. Our phylogenetic analysis places Jiangxititan within the deeply-nested titanosauriform clade Lognkosauria and the sympatric Gannansaurus in a much earlier-diverging lineage. This new discovery thus demonstrates the presence of both early-diverging and late-diverging titanosauriform sauropods in the Late Cretaceous Ganzhou dinosaur fauna.
A Basal Troodontid from the Early Cretaceous of China

Abstract:Troodontid dinosaurs form one of the most avian-like dinosaur groups1,2,3,4,5. Their phylogenetic position is hotly debated, and they have been allied with almost all principal coelurosaurian lineages6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13. Here we report a basal troodontid dinosaur, Sinovenator changii gen. et sp. nov., from the lower Yixian Formation of China. This taxon has several features that are not found in more derived troodontids, but that occur in dromaeosaurids and avialans. The discovery of Sinovenator and the examination of character distributions along the maniraptoran lineage indicate that principal structural modifications toward avians were acquired in the early stages of maniraptoran evolution.
A New Basal Hadrosauroid Dinosaur (dinosauria: Ornithopoda) with Transitional Features from the Late Cretaceous of Henan Province, China

Abstract:Background Southwestern Henan Province in central China contains many down-faulted basins, including the Xixia Basin where the Upper Cretaceous continental sediments are well exposed. The Majiacun Formation is a major dinosaur-bearing stratigraphic unit that occurs in this basin. Methodology/Principal Findings A new basal hadrosauroid dinosaur, Zhanghenglong yangchengensis gen. et sp. nov., is named based on newly collected specimens from the middle Santonian Majiacun Formation of Zhoujiagou Village, Xixia Basin. Two transitional features between basal hadrosauroids and hadrosaurids are attached to the diagnosis of the new taxon, namely five maxillary foramina consisting of four small scattered ones anteroposteriorly arranged in a row and a large one adjacent to the articular facet for the jugal, and dentary tooth crowns bearing both median and distally offset primary ridges. Zhanghenglong also displays a unique combination of plesiomorphic and derived features of hadrosauroids, and is clearly morphologically transitional between basal hadrosauroids and hadrosaurids. Furthermore, some measurement attributes in osteology are applied to the quantitative analysis of Zhanghenglong. For these attributes, the partition of the dataset on most hadrosauroid species resulting from model-based cluster analysis almost matches taxonomic separation between basal hadrosauroids and hadrosaurids. Data of Zhanghenglong on selected measurement attributes straddle the two combinations of intervals of partitioned datasets respectively related to basal hadrosauroids and hadrosaurids. This condition is similar to mosaic evolution of morphological characters present in the specimens of the taxon. The phylogenetic analysis of Hadrosauroidea recovers a clade composed of Zhanghenglong, Nanyangosaurus, and Hadrosauridae with an unresolved polytomy. Conclusions/Significance Zhanghenglong is probably a relatively derived non-hadrosaurid hadrosauroid, based on the inferences made from the morphological comparisons, quantitative evaluation of measurements, and cladistic analysis. In combination with information on the stratigraphy, phylogeny and biogeography, the material of Zhanghenglong provides direct evidence for the hypothesis that hadrosaurids might have originated in Asia.
