Abstract:<ul class="unordered-list"><li>Latitudinal gradients provide opportunities to better understand soil fungal community assembly and its relationship with vegetation, climate, soil and ecosystem function. Understanding the mechanisms underlying community assembly is essential for predicting compositional responses to changing environments.</li><li>We quantified the relative importance of stochastic and deterministic processes in structuring soil fungal communities using patterns of community dissimilarity observed within and between twelve natural forests and related these to environmental variation within and among sites.</li><li>The results revealed that whole fungal communities and communities of arbuscular and ectomycorrhizal fungi consistently exhibited divergent patterns but with less divergence for ectomycorrhizal fungi at most sites. Within those forests, no clear relationships were observed between the degree of divergence within fungal and plant communities. When comparing communities at larger spatial scales, among the twelve forests, we observed distinct separation in all three fungal groups among tropical, subtropical and temperate climatic zones. Soil fungal β‐diversity patterns between forests were also greater when comparing forests exhibiting high environmental heterogeneity.</li><li>Taken together, although large‐scale community turnover could be attributed to specific environmental drivers, the differences among fungal communities in soils within forests was high even at local scales.</li></ul>

Abstract:Soil fungi play vital roles in natural ecosystems, however, their community distribution patterns along different environmental gradients and ecological assembly processes remain unclear. In this study, Illumina MiSeq sequencing was used to investigate the soil fungal community structures of five different forest types along an elevational gradient, and a framework based on a null model was adopted to quantify the relative contribution of deterministic and stochastic ecological assembly processes. The results showed that the majority of soil fungal OTUs were derived from Zygomycota, Basidiomycota, and Ascomycota. Soil fungal community structure differed significantly among the five sites (<i>P</i> < 0.01), and the fungal α-diversity decreased as elevation increased (<i>P</i> < 0.01). The null model showed that the relative contribution of stochastic processes (37.78–73.33%) was higher than that of deterministic processes (26.67–62.22%) within the same forest type, while that of deterministic processes (35.00–93.00%) was higher than stochastic processes (7.00–65.00%) between forest types. These results suggest that forest soil fungal diversity decreased significantly with increasing elevation, and that deterministic processes may be key factors influencing soil fungal community assemblies among forest types. The results of this study provide new insight into soil fungal distribution patterns and community assembly processes in natural forest ecosystems.

Abstract:Understanding the assembly of soil microbial communities of tropical forest is of great significance for the protection of biodiversity in tropical areas. Many studies have been carried out on biodiversity and its maintenance mechanism in tropical regions. However, the effects of land use and seasonal variation on the assembly of soil fungal and bacterial communities in tropical forests remains unknown. To fill this research gap, 16S rRNA and ITS sequences were used to evaluate the assembly mechanisms of soil bacterial and fungal communities using 260 soil samples collected from tropical rainforest and rubber plantation sites across Hainan Island, South China. A majority (~60%) of observed OTUs conformed with neutral model expectations, indicating that neutral processes were important for the assembly of soil microbial communities. For bacterial communities, the NST (normalized stochasticity ratio) was higher in the tropical rainforest (0.746 in the dry season, 0.684 in the rainy season) versus rubber plantation sites (0.647, 0.584), regardless of season. This indicated rainforest were more stochastic than rubber plantation for soil bacterial community assembly. For fungal communities, rubber plantation communities showed greater stochasticity (NST = 0.578) than rainforest communities (NST = 0.388) in the dry season, but the reverse was true in the rainy season (NST = 0.852 for rubber plantations; NST = 0.978 for rainforest). Both the NST results and structural equation modeling showed that bacterial communities were more stochastic in the dry season, while fungal communities were more stochastic in the rainy season; the effects of seasonal changes on assembly therefore differed between bacterial and fungal communities. More importantly, forest types did not have a direct impact on the assembly of bacterial or fungal communities, but exerted indirect effects via soil pH and soil available potassium.

Abstract:How the four major processes affecting community assembly—selection, dispersal, drift, and diversification—solely or jointly shape co-occurring assemblages of macro- and microorganisms at the same scales remains poorly understood. Here, we delved into the distance pattern of similarity (DPS) in tree and soil fungal communities in three c. 20-hectare forest plots spanning tropical to temperate climates in Yunnan province, Southwest China. Specifically, we decrypted the assembly contribution of individual-based random sampling, selection and/or dispersal using drift-inexplicit ordination and drift-explicit baseline models. Surprisingly, our findings demonstrated that most soil fungal realized distribution ranges (RDR) were shorter than most trees. Because of explicitly integrating drift and the range of DPS is broader than the RDR of most trees and fungi, selection baseline models overwhelmingly captured the DPS structures in trees and fungi across spatial scales in tropical, subtropical, and subalpine forest ecosystems and that for fungi across taxonomic levels and fungal guilds. Under the premise that modeling frameworks, ecosystems, spatial scales, sample intensities, selection variables, and dispersal variables are well unified, the ubiquitous dominance of selection elucidates no fundamental difference in the assembly mechanism between trees and soil fungi.

Abstract:Soil microorganisms drive the biogeochemical process of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur, and play a key role in maintaining soil carbon sink and ecosystem function. The study on effects of environmental and spatial factors on the structure of microbial community in boreal coniferous forest soil will provide theoretical basis for making management measures in local forest ecosystem. Our research analyzed five soil fungi communities (LpMC1, LpMC2, PwMC, PtMC, and BMC) in four forest types, including Larix principis-rupprechtii forest, Picea wilsonii forest, Pinus tabulaeformis forest and Betula spp. forest, respectively, in Pangquangou Nature Reserve in Guandi Mountains with Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology. Meanwhile, soil environmental factors and diversity of undergrowth plants were determined to analyze the relationship between fungi community structure and vegetation as well as soil environmental factors. The results showed that:①There were seven eumycota and thirty-three advantageous fungal genera in the five sample sites; ②Redundancy analysis results showed that soil pH, temperature, moisture, total nitrogen, the content of NH4+, total carbon, invertase activity, urease activity, undergrowth dominance and evenness were significantly associated with soil fungi community structure; ③Cluster analysis and principal component analysis showed that forest vegetation type, soil environmental factors and undergrowth had significant effects on soil fungi community structure; ④The results of PCNM analysis showed that at a local scale, dispersal limitation had no significant influence on fungi community structure in the study area. The forest soil fungi community structure in the study area was significantly affected by environmental selection (soil pH, temperature, moisture, total nitrogen, the content of NH4+, total carbon, invertase activity, urease activity, undergrowth dominance and evenness, forest type).
Environmental filtering by pH and soil nutrients drives community assembly in fungi at fine spatial scales

Abstract:Whether niche processes, like environmental filtering, or neutral processes, like dispersal limitation, are the primary forces driving community assembly is a central question in ecology. Here, we use a natural experimental system of isolated tree "islands" to test whether environment or geography primarily structures fungal community composition at fine spatial scales. This system consists of isolated pairs of two distantly related, congeneric pine trees established at varying distances from each other and the forest edge, allowing us to disentangle the effects of geographic distance vs. host and edaphic environment on associated fungal communities. We identified fungal community composition with Illumina sequencing of ITS amplicons, measured all relevant environmental parameters for each tree-including tree age, size and soil chemistry-and calculated geographic distances from each tree to all others and to the nearest forest edge. We applied generalized dissimilarity modelling to test whether total and ectomycorrhizal fungal (EMF) communities were primarily structured by geographic or environmental filtering. Our results provide strong evidence that as in many other organisms, niche and neutral processes both contribute significantly to turnover in community composition in fungi, but environmental filtering plays the dominant role in structuring both free-living and symbiotic fungal communities at fine spatial scales. In our study system, we found pH and organic matter primarily drive environmental filtering in total soil fungal communities and that pH and cation exchange capacity-and, surprisingly, not host species-were the largest factors affecting EMF community composition. These findings support an emerging paradigm that pH may play a central role in the assembly of all soil-mediated systems.

Abstract:Fungal communities play important roles in terrestrial ecosystem functioning. Unraveling the relative importance of stochastic versus deterministic processes in shaping biogeographic patterns of fungal communities has long been a challenge in microbial ecology, owing to high biodiversity and difficulties in identifying fungal taxa. Using a unique anthropogenic system of geographically isolated paddy ‘islands’, we collected 198 soil samples with a spatially explicit design to examine how ecological processes shaped fungal biogeographic patterns. Fungal community structure showed scale-dependent distance-decay relationships. Stochastic processes (dispersal and drift) contributed more to community assembly than deterministic processes (selection) at the local scale, which was largely attributed to drift. In contrast, deterministic processes contributed more to community assembly than stochastic processes at the regional scale, with soil dissolved organic carbon being the most important measured factor. Collectively, scale dependence of fungal biogeographical patterns in paddy soils is influenced by differential contribution of deterministic and stochastic processes.

Abstract:Revealing the assembly mechanisms of the soil microbial community, which is crucial to comprehend microbial biodiversity, is a central focus in ecology. The distribution patterns of microbial elevational diversity have been extensively studied, but their assembly processes and drivers remain unclear. Therefore, it is essential to unravel the relationship between the deterministic and stochastic processes of the microbial community assembly and elevational gradients. Here, our study built upon previous physicochemical analyses of soil samples collected along an elevational gradient (900–1500 m) in Daiyun mountain, a subtropical forest located in southeastern China. Using the phylogenetic-bin-based null model analysis (icamp) and multiple regression on matrices approach, we explored the major drivers that influence the assembly processes of soil bacterial and fungal community across elevations. The results showed that: (1) bacterial rare taxa exhibited a broad habitat niche breadth along the elevational gradient; (2) homogeneous selection and homogenizing dispersal proved to be the most important assembly processes for the bacterial and fungal community; (3) soil phosphorus availability mediated the relative importance of deterministic and stochastic processes in the soil microbial community. Notably, the relative abundance of dominant microbial taxa controlled by homogeneous selection and homogenizing dispersal increased with increasing soil phosphorus availability. Collectively, the assembly processes of microbial elevational communities of the subtropical mountains in China can be explained to some extent by variations in the soil phosphorus availability. This conclusion provides valuable insights into the prediction of soil microbial diversity and phosphorus nutrient cycling in subtropical montane forests.

Abstract:In the study of wireless ad hoc and sensor networks, clustering is an important research problem as it aims at maximizing network lifetime and minimizing latency. A large number of algorithms have been devised to compute “good” clusters in a WSN but few papers have tried to characterize these algorithms in an analytical manner. In this paper, we use a local world model to understand and characterize the functioning of three tree based clustering algorithms. In particular, we have chosen simple tree, CDS Rule K, and A3 topology construction protocols. Using our theoretical framework based on a complex network model, we have also tried to quantify some of the observed features of these algorithms such as number of cluster heads and average degree of the resultant graph. The theoretically obtained measures have reasonably matched with measures obtained by simulation studies.
Partitioning Beta Diversity in A Subtropical Broad-Leaved Forest of China

Abstract:The classical environmental control model assumes that species distribution is determined by the spatial variation of underlying habitat conditions. This niche‐based model has recently been challenged by the neutral theory of biodiversity which assumes that ecological drift is a key process regulating species coexistence. Understanding the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity in communities critically depends on our ability to decompose the variation of diversity into the contributions of different processes affecting it. Here we investigated the effects of pure habitat, pure spatial, and spatially structured habitat processes on the distributions of species richness and species composition in a recently established 24‐ha stem‐mapping plot in the subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forest of Gutianshan National Nature Reserve in East China. We used the new spatial analysis method of principal coordinates of neighbor matrices (PCNM) to disentangle the contributions of these processes. The results showed that (1) habitat and space jointly explained ∼53% of the variation in richness and ∼65% of the variation in species composition, depending on the scale (sampling unit size); (2) tree diversity (richness and composition) in the Gutianshan forest was dominantly controlled by spatially structured habitat (24%) and habitat‐independent spatial component (29%); the spatially independent habitat contributed a negligible effect (6%); (3) distributions of richness and species composition were strongly affected by altitude and terrain convexity, while the effects of slope and aspect were weak; (4) the spatial distribution of diversity in the forest was dominated by broad‐scaled spatial variation; (5) environmental control on the one hand and unexplained spatial variation on the other (unmeasured environmental variables and neutral processes) corresponded to spatial structures with different scales in the Gutianshan forest plot; and (6) five habitat types were recognized; a few species were statistically significant indicators of three of these habitats, whereas two habitats had no significant indicator species. The results suggest that the diversity of the forest is equally governed by environmental control (30%) and neutral processes (29%). In the fine‐scale analysis (10 × 10 m cells), neutral processes dominated (43%) over environmental control (20%).
Fungal diversities and community assembly processes show different biogeographical patterns in forest and grassland soil ecosystems

Abstract:Soil fungal community has been largely explored by comparing their natural diversity. However, there is a relatively small body of literature concerned with fungal community assembly processes and their co-occurrence network correlations carried out across large spatial–temporal scales with complex environmental gradients in natural ecosystems and different habitats in China. Thus, soil fungal community assembly processes were assessed to predict changes in soil function in 98 different forest and grassland sites from the Sichuan, Hubei, and Hebei Provinces of China using high-throughput sequencing of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2). The 10 most abundant fungal phyla results showed that Ascomycota was the most abundant phylum in forests from Sichuan province (64.42%) and grassland habitats from Hebei province (53.46%). Moreover, core fungal taxa (487 OTUs) represented 0.35% of total fungal OTUs. We observed higher fungal Shannon diversity and richness (the Chao1 index) from diverse mixed forests of the Sichuan and Hubei Provinces than the mono-cultured forest and grassland habitats in Hebei Province. Although fungal alpha and beta diversities exhibited different biogeographical patterns, the fungal assembly pattern was mostly driven by dispersal limitation than selection in different habitats. Fungal co-occurrence analyses showed that the network was more intense at Saihanba National Forest Park (SNFP, Hebei). In contrast, the co-occurrence network was more complex at boundaries between forests and grasslands at SNFP. Additionally, the highest number of positive (co-presence or co-operative) correlations of fungal genera were inferred from grassland habitat, which led fungal communities to form commensalism relationships compared to forest areas with having higher negative correlations (mutual exclusion or competitive). The generalized additive model (GAM) analysis showed that the association of fungal Shannon diversity and richness indices with geographical coordinates did not follow a general pattern; instead, the fluctuation of these indices was restricted to local geographical coordinates at each sampling location. These results indicated the existence of a site effect on the diversity of fungal communities across our sampling sites. Our observation suggested that higher fungal diversity and richness of fungal taxa in a particular habitat are not necessarily associated with more complex networks.

Abstract:Soil fungi play a critical role in the biogeochemical cycles of forest ecosystems. Larix gmelinii is a strong and important timber tree species, which forms close associations with a wide range of soil fungi. However, the temporal-spatial disparity effects on the assembly of soil fungal communities in L. gmelinii forests are poorly understood. To address these questions, a total of 120 samples, including 60 bulk soil and 60 root samples, were collected from Aershan and Genhe in July (summer) and October (autumn)2021. We obtained 7,788 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) after merging, filtering, and rarefying using high-throughput sequencing. The dominant phyla are Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota, and Mucoromycota. There were 13 dominant families, among which the families with average relative abundance more than 5% included Thelephoraceae, Mortierellaceae, Archaeorhizomycoaceae, and Inocybaceae. In the functional guilds, symbiotrophic fungi had a relative advantage in the identified functions, and the relative abundances of pathotrophic and saprotrophic fungi varied significantly between sites. There were 12 families differentially expressed across compartments, 10 families differentially expressed between seasons, and 69 families were differentially expressed between sites. The variation in alpha diversity in the bulk soil was greater than that in the rhizosphere soil. Among the three parts (compartment, season, and site), the site had a crucial effect on the beta diversity of the fungal community. Deterministic processes dominated fungal community assembly in Genhe, whereas stochastic processes dominated in Aershan. Soil physicochemical properties and climatic factors significantly affected fungal community structure, among which soil total nitrogen and pH had the greatest effect. This study highlights that spatial variations play a vital role in the structure and assembly of soil fungal communities in L. gmelinii forests, which is of great significance for us in maintaining the health of the forests.

Abstract:Recent studies have shown distinct soil microbial assembly patterns across taxonomic types, habitat types and regions, but little is known about which factors play a dominant role in soil microbial communities. To bridge this gap, we compared the differences in microbial diversity and community composition across two taxonomic types (prokaryotes and fungi), two habitat types (Artemisia and Poaceae) and three geographic regions in the arid ecosystem of northwest China. To determine the main driving factors shaping the prokaryotic and fungal community assembly, we carried out diverse analyses including null model, partial mantel test and variance partitioning analysis etc. The findings suggested that the processes of community assembly were more diverse among taxonomic categories in comparison to habitats or geographical regions. The predominant driving factor of soil microbial community assembly in arid ecosystem was biotic interactions between microorganisms, followed by environmental filtering and dispersal limitation. Network vertex, positive cohesion and negative cohesion showed the most significant correlations with prokaryotic and fungal diversity and community dissimilarity. Salinity was the major environmental variable structuring the prokaryotic community. Although prokaryotic and fungal communities were jointly regulated by the three factors, the effects of biotic interactions and environmental variables (both are deterministic processes) on the community structure of prokaryotes were stronger than that of fungi. The null model revealed that prokaryotic community assembly was more deterministic, whereas fungal community assembly was structured by stochastic processes. Taken together, these findings unravel the predominant drivers governing microbial community assembly across taxonomic types, habitat types and geographic regions and highlight the impacts of biotic interactions on disentangling soil microbial assembly mechanisms.

Abstract:The assembly mode of microbial communities helps to explain the ecological processes of soil subsurface groups, and abundant and rare microorganisms have their own unique assembly patterns. In this paper, the effect of changing vegetation types on the assembly of bacteria and fungi with different abundances in soil was investigated by iCAMP in the Tianshan Mountains. The results showed that: (i) there were differences in the distribution of rare and abundant microbial communities among different vegetation types: the main trends were forests>shrubs > grasslands, and the diversity and variability of rare microorganisms were greater than those of abundant taxa; (ii) abundant taxa were mainly affected by stochastic processes (mainly diffusion limitation), whereas among rare microbes, the main controlling process for bacteria was heterogeneous selection and for fungi was diffusion limitation; (iii) soil carbon, nitrogen and temperature were important determinants driving bacterial community structure. Our results deepen the understanding of the various ecological processes involved in microbial community assembly, reveal the effects of environmental factors on abundant and rare microorganisms, and provide evidence for understanding the mechanisms of soil microbial community construction among different vegetation covers in arid zones.

Abstract:The bright coniferous forest area in the cold temperate zone of China is a terrestrial ecosystem primarily dominated by low mountain Larix gmelinii trees. Limited information is available regarding the assembly mechanisms and interactions of microbial communities in the soil in this region. This study employed high-throughput techniques to obtain DNA from myxomycetes, bacteria, and fungi in the soil, evaluated their diversity in conjunction with environmental factors, associated them with the assembly process, and explored the potential interaction relationships between these microorganisms. The findings of our study showed that environmental factors had a more significant influence on the α and β diversity of bacteria compared to myxomycetes and fungi. Microbial communities were influenced by environmental selection and geographical diffusion, although environmental selection appeared to have a more significant impact than geographical diffusion. Our study suggested that different microorganisms exhibited unique evolutionary patterns and may have different assembly modes within phylogenetic groups. Myxomycetes and fungi exhibited a similar assembly process that was mainly influenced by stochastic dispersal limitation and drift. In contrast, bacteria's assembly process was primarily influenced by stochastic drift and deterministic homogeneous selection. The community of myxomycetes and fungi is greatly influenced by spatial distribution and random events, while bacteria have a relatively stable population composition in specific regions and may also be subject to environmental constraints. Finally, this study revealed that Humicolopsis cephalosporioides, a fungus that exclusively resided in cold environments, may play a critical role as a keystone species in maintaining molecular ecological networks and was considered a core member of the microbiome.
Community Assembly Processes in Fragmented Forests and Its Testing Methods

Abstract:Nowadays, almost all forests in the world are fragmented, and thus, it is necessary to understand how forest fragmentation influence assembly of forest communities. This review summarized the main community assembly processes in the field of community ecology, namely ecological drift, dispersal, selection and speciation, and summarized the relative roles of these community assembly processes in fragmented forests. Due to differences in formation trajectory of different forests in fragmented region, the relative effects of the above four ecological processes are different for different types of forest communities: reassembled community (i.e., forest communities re-assembled through secondary succession in fragmented habitats) and disassembled community (i.e., continuous forest disassembled into fragmented forests). The effects of ecological processes can be effectively tested by ana-lyzing short-term observed species distribution pattern within and among communities (e.g., species abundance distribution analyses, null model combined with beta diversity analyses, and convergence and divergence of functional trait distribution, etc.), controlled experiments, and long-term community monitoring (e.g., community dynamics analysis). Yet, it is insufficient to assess ecological processes undergoing habitat fragmentation by controlled experiments. In the future, studies should focus on developing and testing theoretical models, designing controlled experiments to investigate varied ecological processes undergoing habitat fragmentation, and combining ecological theory with practical biodiversity conservation.
A comparison of microbial composition under three tree ecosystems using the stochastic process and network complexity approaches

Abstract:Soil microbes act as "players" in regulating biogeochemical cycles, whereas environmental heterogeneity drives microbial community assembly patterns and is influenced by stochastic and deterministic ecological processes. Currently, the limited understanding of soil microbial community assembly patterns and interactions under temperate forest stand differences pose a challenge in studying the soil microbial involvement during the succession from coniferous to broad-leaved forests. This study investigated the changes in soil bacterial and fungal community diversity and community structure at the regional scale and identified the pathways influencing soil microbial assembly patterns and their interactions. The results showed that broad-leaved forest cover in temperate forests significantly increased soil pH, and effectively increased soil water content, total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) contents. Both soil bacterial and fungal alpha diversity indices were correlated with soil physicochemical properties, especially in broad-leaved forest. The bacterial and fungal community composition of coniferous forest was dominated by deterministic process (bacteria: 69.4%; fungi: 88.9%), while the bacterial community composition of broad-leaved forest was dominated by stochastic process (77.8%) and the fungal community composition was dominated by deterministic process (52.8%). Proteobacteria, Acidobacteriota, Actinobacteriota, and Verrucomicrobiota were the dominant phyla of soil bacterial communities in temperate forests. Whereas Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota, Basidiomycota, and Rozellomycota were the dominant phyla of soil fungal communities in temperate forests. Most members of dominant phylum were regulated by soil physical and chemical properties. In addition, the succession from temperate coniferous forest to broad-leaved forest was conducive to maintaining the complex network of soil bacteria and fungi, and the top 20 degree of the major taxa in the network reflected the positive response of microbial interactions to the changes of soil nutrients during forest succession. This study not only shows the mechanism by which species differences in temperate forests of northern China affect soil microbial community assembly processes, but also further emphasizes the importance of the soil microbiome as a key ecosystem factor through co-occurrence network analysis.

Abstract:Forest soil microbial communities are easily modified by changes in plant composition. Therefore, differences in the assembly of soil microbial communities within different forest types should be evaluated to gain a deeper understanding of microbial biodiversity and forest system functioning. In the present study, pine, oak, and pine-oak mixed forests at different developmental stages (young, immature, and mature forests) were evaluated to explore the assembly, co-occurrence network, and influencing factors of bacterial and fungal communities. The assembly of bacterial communities was dominated by deterministic processes (homogeneous selection), whereas the assembly of fungal communities was dominated by stochastic processes (dispersion limited). At the young forest stage, the proportion of deterministic processes in bacterial community assembly among the three forest types was minor. In contrast, the proportion of deterministic processes at the immature and mature forest stages in the bacterial community assembly in the pine-oak mixed forest was larger than that in the pure forests. The proportion of stochastic processes in the assembly of fungal communities in the pine-oak mixed forest was greater than that in the pure forests and was observed at all forest stages. Network analysis showed that the links and average degree of bacteria in the pine-oak mixed forest were lower than that of the pure forests, whereas the network topological features of fungi in the pine-oak mixed forest were higher than that of the pure forests. The stochastic processes increased microbial co-occurrence. The results of the random forest indicated that Pielou's evenness index (E) of plant was the most important predictor of fungal community assembly, and Shannon's diversity index (H) of plant also was the critical factor influencing bacterial community assembly. Our study demonstrated the importance of plant diversity in the assembly of forest soil microbial community.

Abstract:Biogeographic patterns of soil fungal diversity have been well documented in forest ecosystems, but the underlying mechanisms and processes that shape these patterns remain relatively unknown. This study took soil samples from 300 forest plots spanning six forest types along a latitudinal gradient in eastern China, which ranges from tropical rainforest to boreal forest ecosystems. A null-model analysis was used to compare the observed soil fungal beta diversity (β-diversity) with the β-diversity expected from random sampling of each local species pool. We also compared the relative importance of environmental and spatial variables on soil fungal β-diversity among forest types along the latitudinal gradient. Our results found that observed β-diversity was greater than expected β-diversity in all six forest types, which means that species tend to be more aggregated than expected. We determined that this species aggregation resulted from both environmental filtering and species dispersal limitations. Further, environmental variables had stronger influences on β-diversity than spatial dispersions. Additionally, the co-occurrence network showed that more species interactions occurred in the mid-latitude forests which lead to decreased soil fungal β-diversity and low interpretations of environmental and spatial variables. Study of these processes in different forest types along latitudinal gradients will provide important insights that local differences in the relative importance of different community assembly processes creates different gradients in global biodiversity.
