Abstract:Chiral supramolecules have great potential for use in chiral recognition, sensing, and catalysis. Particularly, chiral supramolecular biocoordination polymers (SBCPs) provide a versatile platform for characterizing biorelated processes such as chirality transcription. Here, we selectively synthesize homochiral and heterochiral SBCPs, composed of chiral naphthalene diimide ligands and Zn ions, from enantiomeric and mixed R-ligands and S-ligands, respectively. Notably, we find that the chiral self-sorted SBCPs exhibit multifunctional properties, including photochromic, photoluminescent, photoconductive, and chemiresistive characteristics, thus can be used for various sensors. Specifically, these materials can be used for detecting hazardous amine materials due to the electron transfer from the amine to the SBCP surface and for enantioselectively sensing a chiral species naproxen due to the different binding energies with regard to their chirality. These results provide guidelines for the synthesis of chiral SBCPs and demonstrate their versatility and feasibility for use in various sensors covering photoactive, chemiresistive, and chiral sensors.

Abstract:Chiral organic optoelectronics using circularly polarized light (CPL) as the key element in the photonic signal has recently emerged as a next-generation photonic technology. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously achieve high polarization selectivity and superior optoelectronic performance. Supramolecular two-dimensional (2D) chiral organic single crystals may be, good candidates for this purpose due to their defect-free nature, molecular diversity, and morphologies. Here, quasi-2D single crystals of chiral perylene diimides with parallelogram and triangle/hexagon morphologies have been selectively fabricated via self-assembly using different cosolvent systems. These materials exhibit amplified circular dichroism (CD) spectral signals, due to their molecular packing modes and supramolecular chirality. Through molecular surface n-doping using hydrazine, chiral single crystals exhibit electron mobility surpassing 1.0 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), which is one of the highest among chiral organic semiconductors, and excellent optoelectronic functions. Theoretical calculations reveal that the radical anions formed by n-doping increase the electron affinity and/or reduce the energy gap, thus facilitating electron transport. More importantly, the doped organic chiral crystals selectively discriminate CPL handedness with a high anisotropy factor of photoresponsivity (similar to 0.12). These results demonstrate that surface-doped quasi-2D chiral organic single crystals are highly promising for chiral optoelectronics.

Abstract:In nature, chirality displays itself in diverse forms and on various hierarchical scales. Among the various types of chirality, supramolecular chirality is of particular interest due to its ability to amplify and induce chirality, which aids in understanding the fundamental principles of chirality transfer and is also suitable for chirality applications at the macroscopic scale. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel chiral organic semiconductor 2,9-di(hexan-2-yl)anthra[2,1,9-def:6,5,10-d'e'f']diisoquinoline-1,3,8,10 (2H, 9H)-tetraone (ClCPDI-C6) and its selfassembly into supramolecular nanowires (NWs). The chirality of the NWs was successfully transferred via intra- and inter-molecular interactions from the chiral pendant to the perylene diimide (PDI) core after self-assembly. Upon exposing the organic NWs to phenylhydrazine dopant vapor, the average mobility of the NW transistor was increased from 0.0085 to 0.026 cm2 V-1 s-1. Additionally, phenylhydrazine molecular doping of the NWs significantly enhanced their optical performance in comparison with the undoped NWs, with improved photoresponsivity (R) (similar to 3 times higher), photosensitivity (P) (similar to 10 times higher), external quantum efficiency (similar to 3 times higher), and detectivity (D*) (similar to 8 times higher). The detectivity of the phenylhydrazine-doped NWs was 1 or 2 orders of magnitude higher than that previously reported for chiral PDI NWs. Notably, they showed a fast and stable real-time photoswitching of both undoped and doped ClCPDI-C6 NWs (<90 ms), indicating a high sensitivity to visible light and great potential in photodetector and photoswitching applications. From density functional theory calculations, after absorbing phenylhydrazine on the ClCPDI-C6 NWs, the increased electron affinity contributes to increased optoelectronic performance. Our investigation paves the way for future in-depth studies on the relationship between the structure and supramolecular chirality with optoelectronic device performance.
Bay-Substitution Effect of Perylene Diimides on Supramolecular Chirality and Optoelectronic Properties of Their Self-Assembled Nanostructures.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) organic chiral supramolecules have received a great deal of attention for their promising applications in chiral recognition systems, chemical sensors, catalysts, and optoelectronics. Compared to modifications at the imide position of a perylene diimide (PDI), few studies have explored bay substitution of chiral PDIs and their self-assemblies into 1D nanomaterials. Herein, we describe the synthesis of three bay-substituted PDIs and explore the effects of bay substitution on supramolecular chirality by examining circular dichroism spectra and the optoelectronic performance of chiral PDI nanomaterials in phototransistors. Among the three fabricated self-assemblies, nanomaterials based on (R)-CN-CPDI-Ph exhibited the highest electron mobility of 0.17 cm2 V-1 s-1, a low threshold voltage of -1 V, and enhanced optoelectronic performance. For example, the photoresponsivity and external quantum efficiency of (R)-CN-CPDI-Ph assemblies were 4-fold higher than those of (R)-2Br-CPDI-Ph and (R)-2F-CPDI-Ph. All three nanomaterials exhibited fast switching speeds compared with previously reported N-substituted PDIs, suggesting that bay substitution can be an effective means of achieving rapid photoswitching. A comprehensive study using density functional theory calculations and crystal analyses revealed that the enhanced optoelectronic performance of (R)-CN-CPDI-Ph nanomaterials is related to the substitution of CN at the bay position of PDI. This minor change provides simultaneous improvements in electron injectability and structural order. Our findings demonstrate that bay substitution can significantly impact the self-assembly, supramolecular chirality, and optoelectronic properties of PDI nanomaterials.

Abstract:Supramolecular chirality in two configurational homoaggregates of anionic meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS) can be induced by D- and L-alanine (Ala) in acidic water, respectively. The induced supramolecular chirality can be further memorized and enforced, even after complete removal of Ala or in the presence of excess Ala with the opposite configuration, through strong electrostatic interactions with achiral poly(allylamine) [PAA]. The ionic chiral interactions between TPPS and Ala or PAA are characterized by means of UV/Vis absorption and circular dichroism spectrometry. Fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy are used as complementary techniques. On the basis of the comprehensive experimental results, a possible mechanism for chiral induction, memory; and amplification of TPPS homoaggregates by chiral amino acids and achiral PAA is proposed. Thus, we demonstrate a novel strategy to realize chiral memory in supramolecular systems by polyelectrolytes through hierarchical electrostatic self-assembly.
Electropolymerization of N-Substituted Chiral Pyrrole in Chiral Environment and the Microstructure of the Polymer

Abstract:Electrochemical polymerization of the N-substituted pyrrole monomer, methyl (S)-(+)-2-(1H-pyrrolyl) propionate in a chiral medium with ( S)-(+)-camphor-10-sulfonic acid ((S)-(+)-CSA) or ( R)-( -)camphor -10-sulfonic acid ( ( R)-( -)-CSA). The obtained polymer films were characterized by cyclic voltammograms (CV), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared, Raman, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The enantioselective recognition properties of polymer were also investigated in the presence of enantiomers of camphorsulfonic acid as supporting electrolyte and doping agent. Chiral alkyl N-substituted polypyrrole micro-ribbons were generated electrochemically and stand upright on the working electrode surface. The ribbons have a length of 100 - 200 mum, a width of 20 - 50 mum and a thickness of 3 - 5 mum.

Abstract:Two amino-functionalized chiral poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivatives, poly(N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-L-phenylalayl (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2'-yl)methylamide) (PEDOT-Boc-Phe) and poly(L-phenylalayl (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2'-yl)methylamide) (PEDOT-Phe), were synthesized electrochemically via potentiostatic polymerization of corresponding monomers N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-L-phenylalayl (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2'-yl)methylamide (EDOT-Boc-Phe) and L-phenylalayl (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2'-yl)methylamide (EDOT-Phe). The electrochemical behavior, structural characterization, spectroscopic properties, and surface morphology of two chiral conducting polymer films were systematically explored. They displayed excellent reversible redox activities, and rough and compact surface. Importantly, PEDOT-Boc-Phe and PEDOT-Phe modified electrodes were used to identify 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) enantiomers by square wave voltammetry (SWV) in sulphuric acid solution. It is interesting that the SWV peak currents of enantiomers were found to be quite different and hence the enantiomers could be successfully recognized but the enantioselectivity was not observed using the common method of cyclic voltammetry (CV). Satisfactory results implied that the obtained polymer films could play crucial roles in the development of practical value and analytical application prospects.

Abstract:Chirality plays a key role in many fields of natural sciences as well as life sciences. Chiral materials are widely developed and used for electrochemical chiral recognition. In recent years, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been widely used as a novel carbon nanomaterial due to their excellent charge transfer properties, good biocompatibility, and low cost. The special structure of π-conjugated porphyrin attracts attention. Supramolecular self-assembly shows a way to construct chiral materials by self-assembling simple molecules into chiral composites. Herein, we demonstrate the self-assembly of achiral porphyrins induced by chiral carbon quantum dots assembled from L- and or D-tryptophan (L- and or D-Trp) with carbon quantum dots, resulting in 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-carboxyPheyl) (TCPP) self-assembled structure. The electrochemical chiral recognition of chiral self-assembled materials was studied using Phenylalanine (Phe) enantiomer as a chiral analyte. Electrochemical chiral recognition results showed that the chiral self-assembled materials induced by chiral templates have a good ability to discriminate Phe enantiomers. Therefore, this research provides a new idea for the synthesis of chiral composites and further expands applications to electrochemical chiral recognition.

Abstract:Recognition and separation of chiral molecules is of great importance in the field of biotechnology, especially on pharmaceutics. Molecular imprinted polymers (MIP) have been proved as a powerful tool for the separation of target molecules. In this paper, polypyrrole (PPy) nanowires with an average diameter of ca. 100nm and few micrometers in length were successfully prepared by electrochemical polymerization, in which enantiomeric camphorsulfonic acid (d- or l-CSA) molecule acted as both the dopant and molecular imprinting pseudo-template. Both electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) and circular dichroism (CD) spectra were employed to demonstrate the enantioselective interaction between de-doped PPy nanowires imprinted with CSA enantiomers (MIP-PPy) and chiral phenylalanine (d- or l-Phe). EIS leads to the characterization of interfacial electron resistance of the PPy coated electrode, while CD spectra provides spectral evidence for the enantioselective recognition event. Both methods proved that MIP-PPy nanowires have the capability for the recognition and separation of chiral phenylalanine. The sensitivity of the chiral recognition was further investigated by using various concentrations of chiral Phe and adsorption time. This approach provides a potential route for fabricating enantioselective recognition polypyrrole nanostructures that could be employed in enantiomeric sensoring or separating various chiral molecules.

Abstract:Abstract Chirality exists everywhere in nature, so chiral recognition is also an extremely important field. This paper explores the recognition of amino acid configuration by an electrochemical chiral sensing platform constructed with carbon nanomaterials (carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as the substrate material) combined with chiral selectors (chitosan (CS)). CQDs/CS, which is bonded by intermolecular force, and CQDs‐CS, which is formed by covalent grafting through amidation, are selected as electrochemical chiral recognition materials, and a series of characterization methods are carried out to indicate the successful preparation of the materials, and then attached to the glass carbon electrode (GCE), forming a chiral sensing platform for amino acid enantiomers. The differential voltammetry (DPV) method was used to convert the chemical signal into electrical signal. The results showed that compared with CQDs/CS, CQDs‐CS had better enantiomer resolution to tryptophan (Trp), and the peak current ratio (I L /I D ) was 2.28.

Abstract:A range of electrochemical sensors capable of enantiomer discrimination have been developed, but the creation of their electrochemical interfaces remains complex. This often entails combining externally introduced chiral centers with conductive materials. This study marks a significant departure from this approach by exploiting the inherent chirality of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) for enantiomer discrimination. We have crafted a miniaturized, enantioselective electrochemical microsensor by seamlessly integrating high-purity SWCNTs, possessing inherent chirality, with an ultra-sensitive carbon fiber microelectrode. Using differential pulse voltammetry, we observed a notable difference in peak current, highlighting the sensor's precise ability to distinguish between enantiomers of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA). Furthermore, we investigated the intricacies of the interplay between enantioselective interfaces and the molecules under discrimination, offering deeper insights into the mechanisms governing this phenomenon. This study provides substantial momentum into the realm of enantioselective electrochemical sensing and sheds light on the unique attributes of inherently chiral carbon nanotubes in such applications. This paves the way for a new breed of chiral sensors that are simpler, more efficient, and cost-effective.

Abstract:N-Substituted pyrrole derivatives with chiral side groups have been synthesized and electrochemically polymerized in acetonitrile containing tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAClO(4)) and (S)-(+)-camphor-10-sulfonic acid ((S)-(+)-CSA) or (R)-(-)-camphor-10-sulfonic acid ((R)-(-)-CSA). The resulting N-substituted polypyrrole films were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, infrared, Raman and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopies. XPS results demonstrated that the as-grown polymer films are preferably doped by CSA anions when the monomer and the CSA anion have the same optical rotation dispersion (ORD). Furthermore, the conductivities of the polymers synthesized in the media containing CSA with the same ORD of the corresponding monomers were measured to be about 2-10 times higher than those of polymers obtained from electrolytes without CSA. Abstract:In this work, a kind of chiral helical polymer PDTDH of 9,9-dipropynylfluorene skeleton structure were prepared. The structure and chiral properties of the obtained polymer were characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Circular Dichroism (CD) Spectroscopy. These chiral PDTDH polymers were used to fabricate chiral sensors and to investigate the enantioselective recognition of D−/L- tartaric acid enatiomer. The results indicated that the (S)-PDTDH/GCE sensor showed obvious response toward the tested tartaric acid enantiomer, which was confirmed by two parameters: Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) tests. These findings expand the scope for the application of chiral polymer as electrode modification material in the electrochemical chiral recognition field.

Abstract:The paper is mainly focused on the induced circular dichroism (ICD) based on central-to-axial chirality transfer for direct chiral recognition and ee value detection of 1,2-diaminocyclohexane (1,2-DACH) enantiomers. A novel achiral polymer sensor with potential axial chirality feature is designed and synthesized. This conjugated polymer incorporating biphenol moiety can bind chiral 1,2-DACH substrates via intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions, which could result in the detectable exciton-coupled circular dichroism (CD) spectrum due to the chirality transfer from an enantiopure building block to a dynamically racemic 1,1'-biphenyl-2,2'-diol moiety in the polymer chain backbone. The linear regression analysis of ICD sensing shows an excellent agreement between CD intensity and concentration of chiral 1,2-DACH, which indicates this biphenol-based achiral polymer can be used as a chiral sensor for direct recognition and ee value detection of 1,2-DACH enantiomers by using ICD spectra of achiral polymer sensor.

Abstract:A study of the response behavior of anion to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based sensor, in which a Poly(pyrrole) (Ppy) modified thin gold film was used as a sensor chip is described. In situ surface plasmon resonance and electrochemical methods were used to investigate the electropolymerization and doping/dedoping processes of thin Ppy film. The electropolymerization of pyrrole was carried out under cyclic voltammetric conditions, and simultaneously monitored by in situ SPR. It has revealed that the transition between the reduced state and oxidized state of the Ppy, corresponding to the doping/dedoping of anions, can lead to very distinct changes in SPR signal at a fixed angle of incident laser beam. Furthermore, it has demonstrated that the concentration, the charge and size of anions, as well as the film thickness play important roles in the ingress/egress process of anions. Abstract:Due to the crucial role of amino acids in life sciences and pharmaceutics, identification of optical amino acid molecules is of great significance. In this study, the two materials (CNT and PANI) were combined together to obtain the magnification of electrochemical signal by substrate material (CNT/PANI). Then a self-assembled multiwalled carbon nanotubes/polyaniline/sodium alginate (CNT/PANI/SA) nanocomposite with chiral sites and conductive material was synthesized as the electrochemical sensing interface. Next, a novel electrochemical sensing interface was fabricated via modifying the as-prepared chiral material on a polished glassy carbon electrode (CNT/PANI/SA/GCE) for precisely, efficiently, and rapidly differentiation of tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers. It was observed that CNT/PANI/SA/GCE showed desirable stereoselective recognition effect in the variety of signal strength to peak current (Ip) to the different optical activity of Trp enantiomers. In the case of optimal conditions, the peak current ratio in the solution of l-Trp and d-Trp (ID /IL ) was observed to be 2.1 at CNT/PANI/SA/GCE by differential pulse voltammogram (DPV). UV-visible spectroscopy further showed that CNT/PANI/SA had a greater binding energy to l-Trp. Also different factors affecting the enantioselectivity of CNT/PANI/SA/GCE, such as the incubation time, pH, and dropcoating volume of CNT/PANI/SA were optimized. Moreover, the proposed CNT/PANI/SA/GCE showed excellent specific stereoselectivity and anti-interference ability. Besides, the proposed chiral sensing platform can be effectively applied in real samples to detect Trp enantiomers sensitively. This work inspires us a new path for the preparation of substrate material with excellent electrical conductivity, as well as extend its application potential in chiral recognition.
