Abstract:This research addresses the increasing demand for advanced navigation systems capable of operating within confined surroundings. A significant challenge in this field is developing an efficient planning framework that can generalize across various types of collision avoidance missions. Utilizing numerical optimal control techniques, this study proposes a unified optimization-based planning framework to meet these demands. We focus on handling two collision avoidance problems, i.e., the object not colliding with obstacles and not colliding with boundaries of the constrained region. The object or obstacle is denoted as a union of convex polytopes and ellipsoids, and the constrained region is denoted as an intersection of such convex sets. Using these representations, collision avoidance can be approached by formulating explicit constraints that separate two convex sets, or ensure that a convex set is contained in another convex set, referred to as separating constraints and containing constraints, respectively. We propose to use the hyperplane separation theorem to formulate differentiable separating constraints, and utilize the S-procedure and geometrical methods to formulate smooth containing constraints. We state that compared to the state of the art, the proposed formulations allow a considerable reduction in nonlinear program size and geometry-based initialization in auxiliary variables used to formulate collision avoidance constraints. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed unified planning framework is evaluated in two contexts, autonomous parking in tractor-trailer vehicles and overtaking on curved lanes. The results in both cases exhibit an improved computational performance compared to existing methods.

Abstract:Path planning is a crucial module in motion planning for autonomous driving, aiming at generating kinematically feasible and collision-free paths. Furthermore, the smoothness of generated path is significant for passengers’ comfortable feelings. In this paper, we propose an improved quadratic programming approach that generates optimal paths in urban structure scenarios with the Frenét frame, taking the cost of the path curvature into consideration explicitly. The proposed second-order Taylor-expansion estimation of the path curvature with the lateral spatial parameters can reflect the actual change of path curvature. Various simulated scenarios verify the effectiveness of our proposed method and the improvement of path quality by adding the curvature objective in the optimization procedure. The source code is released as an open-source package for the community.
A Safety-Enhanced Eco-Driving Strategy for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles: A Hierarchical and Distributed Framework

Abstract:This paper presents a safety-enhanced eco-driving strategy for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), which is implemented by a hierarchical and distributed framework. The driving risk field, shockwave theory, and motion planning and control method are integrated into this framework to optimize the trajectories of CAVs on a signalized arterial under mixed traffic flow, with the aim of reducing the driving risk and fuel consumption of CAVs simultaneously, while ensuring traffic efficiency. The optimization procedure is mainly composed of two parts: long-term trajectory planning based on optimal control and short-term trajectory control based on model predictive control, which makes the strategy more adaptable to the various traffic conditions. The results show that the proposed framework can effectively reduce the safety risk that vehicles are exposed to and their fuel consumption by 18%–24% and 20%–27%, respectively. Furthermore, it reveals that conventional eco-driving strategies may result in negative safety issues when only considering the impact of preceding vehicles on the eco-CAV. However, these negative impacts can be eliminated when the impacts of following vehicles on the eco-CAV are taken into account. In addition, the sensitivity analysis on the Market Penetration Rate (MPR) of CAVs and traffic demand is performed. The results show that the framework is robust and can work under various traffic conditions (including under-saturated and over-saturated ones) and different MPRs.

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. In the field of autonomous driving, velocity planning is of paramount importance for handling dynamic obstacle scenarios. To avoid unnecessary acceleration and deceleration, self-driving vehicles need to find an energy-optimized velocity trajectory. Moreover, in complex traffic environments, the vehicle trajectory must consider the spatio-temporal coupling problem to avoid unrealistic driving paths. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a hierarchical planner that first plans the path and then performs speed planning based on the already planned path. Specifically, we focus on the energy consumption factor and use dynamic programming for speed planning while combining safety and comfort considerations. The optimal energy-saving trajectory is obtained by combining the speed profile with the optimal path. To cope with complex scenarios on real roads, we propose an adaptive trajectory adjustment strategy based on model predictive control to track by adaptively selecting tracking modes. Finally, hardware-in-the-loop experimental validation demonstrates that our proposed method significantly reduces energy consumption compared with the traditional decoupling method while ensuring that the autonomous vehicle adapts well to complex traffic scenarios.

Aiming at the problem of local path planning for structured roads, this paper proposes a framework of local path-speed planning for autonomous driving, which takes safety as the premise and improves driving efficiency. The framework simulates human driving thinking and divides the local path planning of autonomous driving into two parts: lane decision and path-speed planning. In the part of the lane decision, a lane decision algorithm based on driving risk field and safe distance is proposed, which can ensure driving efficient and ensure that the planning vehicle is always in a low-risk driving environment. In the part of the lane change path-speed planning, a candidate path generation algorithm based on uniform sampling of lane change time and a cost function considering lane change timeliness, driving safety, speed smoothness, and path continuity are proposed to achieve optimal path selection and speed planning. In the experiment part, there are six different driving tasks. In six scenes, the local path-speed planning framework proposed in this paper can plan a safe, efficient, and smooth driving path and a safe planning speed. Taking the scenario of detouring low-speed obstacles as an example, the path-speed planning algorithm proposed is compared with the path-speed planning algorithm based on discrete optimization in Hu et al. It has been verified that the algorithm proposed can ensure that planner is always at low environmental risks and drive with high driving efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract An online trajectory planning method for collision avoidance is proposed to improve vehicle driving safety and comfort simultaneously. The collision-free trajectory for autonomous driving is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem. A novel approximate convex optimization approach is developed for the online optimal trajectory in both longitudinal and lateral directions. First, a dual variable is used to model the non-convex collision-free constraint for driving safety and is calculated by solving a dual problem of the relative distance between vehicles. Second, the trajectory is further optimized in a model predictive control framework considering the safety. It realizes continuous-time and dynamic feasible motion with collision avoidance. The geometry of object vehicles is described by polygons instead of circles or ellipses in traditional methods. In order to avoid aggressive maneuver in the longitudinal and lateral directions for driving comfort, rates of the acceleration and the steering angle are restricted. The final formulated optimization problem is convex, which can be solved by using quadratic programming solvers and is computationally efficient for online application. Simulation results show that this approach can obtain similar driving performance compared to a state-of-the-art nonlinear optimization method. Furthermore, various driving scenarios are tested to evaluate the robustness and the ability for handling complex driving tasks.

Abstract:As a fundamental component of autonomous driving systems, motion planning has garnered significant attention from both academia and industry. This paper focuses on efficient and spatial-temporal optimal trajectory optimization in unstructured environments using compact convex approximations of vehicle shapes. Conventional approaches typically model the task as an optimal control problem by discretizing the motion process in state configuration space. However, this often results in a tradeoff between optimality and efficiency since generating high-quality motion trajectories often requires high-precision discretization of the dynamic process, which imposes a substantial computational burden. To address this issue, we leverage the differential flatness property of car-like robots to simplify the trajectory representation and analytically formulate the spatial-temporal joint optimization problem with flat outputs in a compact manner, while ensuring the feasibility of nonholonomic dynamics. Moreover, we achieve efficient obstacle avoidance with a collision-free driving corridor for unmodelled obstacles and signed distance approximations for dynamic moving objects. We present comprehensive benchmarks with State-of-the-Art methods, demonstrating the significance of the proposed method in terms of efficiency and trajectory quality. Real-world experiments verify the practicality of our algorithm. We will release our codes for the research community.

Spatio-Temporal Trajectory Planning Using Search And Optimizing Method for Autonomous Driving

Abstract:In the field of autonomous driving trajectory planning, it’s virtual to ensure real-time planning while guaranteeing feasibility and robustness. Current widely adopted approaches include decoupling path planning and velocity planning based on optimization method, which can’t always yield optimal solutions, especially in complex dynamic scenarios. Furthermore, search-based and sampling-based solutions encounter limitations due to their low resolution and high computational costs. This paper presents a novel spatio-temporal trajectory planning approach that integrates both search-based planning and optimization-based planning method. This approach retains the advantages of search-based method, allowing for the identification of a global optimal solution through search. To address the challenge posed by the non-convex nature of the original solution space, we introduce a spatio-temporal semantic corridor structure, which constructs a convex feasible set for the problem. Trajectory optimization is then performed through numerical optimization methods, resulting in real-time and robust spatio-temporal trajectory planning. The proposed approach initiates by constructing a 3D spatio- temporal map that incorporates information such as dynamic obstacles. Improved A* algorithm is used to search for a preliminary spatio- temporal trajectory, serving as an initial approximation for the trajectory. Based on this initial approximation, a spatio-temporal corridor is constructed as locally convex feasible driving area, then a quintic monomial polynomial is employed to represent a trajectory, considering vehicle kinematics, continuity, and other constraints, this formulation transforms the problem into a general quadratic programming problem. Ultimately, the generated trajectories are rigorously tested through simulations in scenarios involving overtaking and side car cut-in. The results indicate that the generated trajectories are feasible, reasonable, and exhibit good real-time performance.

Abstract:Autonomous parking has been a widely developed branch of intelligent transportation systems. In autonomous parking, maneuver planning is a crucial procedure that determines how intelligent the entire parking system is. This paper concerns planning time-optimal parallel parking maneuvers in a straightforward, accurate, and purely objective way. A unified dynamic optimization framework is established, which includes the vehicle kinematics, physical restrictions, collision-avoidance constraints, and an optimization objective. Interior-point method (IPM)-based simultaneous dynamic optimization methodology is adopted to solve the formulated dynamic optimization problem numerically. Given that near-feasible solutions have been widely acknowledged to ease optimizing nonlinear programs (NLPs), a critical region-based initialization strategy is proposed to facilitate the offline NLP-solving process, a lookup table-based strategy is proposed to guarantee the on-site planning performance, and a receding-horizon optimization framework is proposed for online maneuver planning. A series of parallel parking cases is tested, and simulation results demonstrate that our proposal is efficient even when the slot length is merely 10.19% larger than the car length. As a unified maneuver planner, our adopted IPM-based simultaneous dynamic optimization method can deal with any user-specified demand provided that it can be explicitly described.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part D: Journal of Automobile Engineering, Ahead of Print. In this paper, a safety-guaranteed game-theoretical velocity planning framework in a hierarchical manner is proposed to generate safe, ride comfort, and travel efficiency-balanced velocity for autonomous vehicles (AVs). In the upper layer, a bang-bang decision-making method is utilized to determine which planning mode to be implemented based on acceleration and jerk constraints, including a comfort mode, an efficiency mode, and a game mode. In the lower layer, asymmetric jerk limits based on comfort characteristics sensibility analysis and safe velocity simultaneously considering longitudinal and lateral stability are firstly developed to maintain ride comfort and driving safety, respectively on curve roads, especially sharp curves where vehicle stability may be not fully considered in most researches. Based on these, a non-cooperative game-theoretical velocity planning method is presented to solve the conflict between comfort mode and efficiency mode by optimizing his own objective based on the other's action. Finally, for the sake of solving efficiency and accuracy, a chaos optimization-based algorithm (COA) is designed to solve for the Stackelberg equilibrium solution of the bilevel game optimization problem. Three experimental tests are carried out to comprehensively demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness, and real time of the proposed framework. The results show that the proposed method can provide the great performance of ride comfort, travel efficiency, and longitudinal-lateral stability in real time in the velocity planning process.

Abstract:Autonomous parking refers to driving a vehicle into a parking spot without manual operation. The emerging and prevailing methods are either effective on specific scenarios only or focus on overly simplified scenarios, lacking the capability to tackle general cases. In our viewpoint, a general parking motion planning problem is a dynamic optimization problem associated with complicated constraints. This paper proposes a unified formulation that can cover various kinds of parking scenarios when time-optimal solutions are pursued. First, we use differential equations to describe the kinematics of a car, and then use algebraic equalities/inequalities to restrict the car not collide with the parking slot frontiers. Through this, we formulate a time-optimal dynamic optimization (DO) problem that is identical to the original parking motion planning mission. Thereafter, the formulated DO is solved by a simultaneous approach. Although we pursue for time-optimal motions, this approach can be extended to consider other user-specific optimization criteria (such as minimum driving length or minimal fuel usage) with almost none additional effort.
Optimal Control-Based Online Motion Planning For Cooperative Lane Changes Of Connected And Automated Vehicles

Abstract:This work formulates the multi-vehicle lane change motion planning task as a centralized optimal control problem, which is beneficial in being generic and complete. However, a direct solution to this optimal control problem is numerically intractable due to the dimensionality of the collision-avoidance constraints and nonlinearity of the vehicle kinematics. A progressively constrained dynamic optimization (PCDO) method is proposed to facilitate the numerical solving process of this complicated problem. PCDO guarantees to efficiently obtain an optimum to the original optimal control problem via solving a sequence of simplified problems which gradually judge and reserve only the active collision-avoidance constraints. A first-regularization-then-action strategy, together with the look-up table technique, is developed for online solutions. At the regularization stage, the vehicles form a standard formation by linear acceleration/deceleration only. At the action stage, the vehicles execute lane change motions computed offline and recorded in the look-up table. This makes online motion planning feasible because 1) the computational complexity at the regularization stage scales linearly rather than exponentially with the vehicle number; and 2) online computation at the action stage is fully avoided through data extraction from the look-up table.
A Real-Time Motion Planner with Trajectory Optimization for Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient real-time autonomous driving motion planner with trajectory optimization is proposed. The planner first discretizes the plan space and searches for the best trajectory based on a set of cost functions. Then an iterative optimization is applied to both the path and speed of the resultant trajectory. The post-optimization is of low computational complexity and is able to converge to a higher-quality solution within a few iterations. Compared with the planner without optimization, this framework can reduce the planning time by 52% and improve the trajectory quality. The proposed motion planner is implemented and tested both in simulation and on a real autonomous vehicle in three different scenarios. Experiments show that the planner outputs high-quality trajectories and performs intelligent driving behaviors.

Abstract:In dense and dynamic scenarios, planning a safe and comfortable trajectory is full of challenges when traffic participants are driving at high speed. The classic graph search and sampling methods first perform path planning and then configure the corresponding speed, which lacks a strategy to deal with the high-speed obstacles. Decoupling optimization methods perform motion planning in the S-L and S-T domains respectively. These methods require a large free configuration space to plan the lane change trajectory. In dense dynamic scenes, it is easy to cause the failure of trajectory planning and be cut in by others, causing slow driving speed and bring safety hazards. We analyze the collision relationship in the spatio-temporal domain, and propose an instantaneous analysis model which only analyzes the collision relationship at the same time. In the model, the collision-free constraints in 3D spatio-temporal domain is projected to the 2D space domain to remove redundant constraints and reduce computational complexity. Experimental results show that our method can plan a safe and comfortable lane-changing trajectory in dense dynamic scenarios. At the same time, it improves traffic efficiency and increases ride comfort.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an optimal path planning and speed control strategy for motion planning of unmanned ground vehicles to follow the desired path in various driving environments. The novelty of this work is that it integrates the longitudinal speed and lateral motion control by maximizing the longitudinal progression and minimizing the lateral path tracking errors and formulates a standard quadratic optimization problem. Firstly, a dynamic programming approach is introduced to convexify the corridor constraints in path pre-selection and replanned for obstacle avoidance. The idea is to find a convex feasible set for the optimization problem using the convex constraints. And then a standard quadratic convex problem is formulated to optimize the longitudinal motion and steering angle control in prediction and control horizon. The longitudinal progression and lateral tracking errors are decomposed in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. The centerline as well as road borders are also described by using cubic spline curves. Some challenge scenarios including static and moving participating obstacle vehicles are tested and validated for the proposed motion planning strategy. The feasibility and performance of the proposed strategy are demonstrated by numerical experiments in terms of the stability and maneuverability of unmanned ground vehicles in different driving conditions.

Speed Planning Using Bezier Polynomials with Trapezoidal Corridors

Abstract:To generate safe and real-time trajectories for an autonomous vehicle in dynamic environments, path and speed decoupled planning methods are often considered. This paper studies speed planning, which mainly deals with dynamic obstacle avoidance given the planning path. The main challenges lie in the decisions in non-convex space and the trade-off between safety, comfort and efficiency performances. This work uses dynamic programming to search heuristic waypoints on the S-T graph and to construct convex feasible spaces. Further, a piecewise Bezier polynomials optimization approach with trapezoidal corridors is presented, which theoretically guarantees the safety and optimality of the trajectory. The simulations verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Trajectory planning is of vital importance to decision-making for autonomous vehicles. Currently, there are three popular classes of cost-based trajectory planning methods: sampling-based, graph-search-based, and optimization-based. However, each of them has its own shortcomings, for example, high computational expense for sampling-based methods, low resolution for graph-search-based methods, and lack of global awareness for optimization-based methods. It leads to one of the challenges for trajectory planning for autonomous vehicles, which is improving planning efficiency while guaranteeing model feasibility. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid planning framework composed of two modules, which preserves the strength of both graph-search-based methods and optimization-based methods, thus enabling faster and smoother spatio-temporal trajectory planning in constrained dynamic environment. The proposed method first constructs spatio-temporal driving space based on directed acyclic graph and efficiently searches a spatio-temporal trajectory using the improved A* algorithm. Then taking the search result as reference, locally convex feasible driving area is designed and model predictive control is applied to further optimize the trajectory with a comprehensive consideration of vehicle kinematics and moving obstacles. Results simulated in four different scenarios all demonstrated feasible trajectories without emergency stop or abrupt steering change, which is kinematic-smooth to follow. Moreover, the average planning time was 31 ms, which only took 59.05%, 18.87%, and 0.69%, respectively, of that consumed by other state-of-the-art trajectory planning methods, namely, maximum interaction defensive policy, sampling-based method with iterative optimizations, and Graph-search-based method with Dynamic Programming.

Abstract:This paper proposes an optimized trajectory planner and motion planner framework, which aim to deal with obstacle avoidance along a reference road for autonomous driving in unstructured environments. The trajectory planning problem is decomposed into lateral and longitudinal planning sub-tasks along the reference road. First, a vehicle kinematic model with road coordinates is established to describe the lateral movement of the vehicle. Then, nonlinear optimization based on a vehicle kinematic model in the space domain is employed to smooth the reference road. Second, a multilayered search algorithm is applied in the lateral-space domain to deal with obstacles and find a suitable path boundary. Then, the optimized path planner calculates the optimal path by considering the distance to the reference road and the curvature constraints. Furthermore, the optimized speed planner takes into account the speed boundary in the space domain and the constraints on vehicle acceleration. The optimal speed profile is obtained by using a numerical optimization method. Furthermore, a motion controller based on a kinematic error model is proposed to follow the desired trajectory. Finally, the experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed trajectory planner and motion controller framework in handling typical scenarios and avoiding obstacles safely and smoothly on the reference road and in unstructured environments.

Abstract:Smooth and safe speed planning is imperative for the successful deployment of autonomous vehicles. This paper presents a mathematical formulation for the optimal speed planning of autonomous driving, which has been validated in high-fidelity simulations and real-road demonstrations with practical constraints. The algorithm explores the inter-traffic gaps in the time and space domain using a breadth-first search. For each gap, quadratic programming finds an optimal speed profile, synchronizing the time and space pair along with dynamic obstacles. Qualitative and quantitative analysis in Carla is reported to discuss the smoothness and robustness of the proposed algorithm. Finally, we present a road demonstration result for urban city driving.

Predictive Motion Planning for Autonomous Vehicles with Geometric Constraints Via Convex Optimization

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an MPC-based motion planning algorithm, including a decision-making module, an obstacle-constraints generating module, and an MPC-based planning module. The designed decision module effectively distinguishes between structured and unstructured roads and processes them separately, so that the algorithm is more robust in different environments. Besides, the movement of obstacles is considered in the decision-making and obstacle constraints generating module. By processing obstacles with lateral and longitudinal speed separately, obstacle avoidance can be done in scenarios with moving obstacles, including moving obstacles crossing the road. Instead of treating the vehicle as a mass point, we explicitly consider the geometric constraints by modeling the vehicle as three intersecting circles when generating obstacle constraints. This ensures that the vehicle is collision-free in motion planning, especially when the vehicle turns. For non-convex obstacle constraints, we propose an algorithm that generates up to two alternative linear constraints to convexify the obstacle constraints for improving computational efficiency. In MPC, we consider the vehicle kino-dynamic constraints and two generated linear constraints. Therefore, the proposed method can achieve better real-time performance and can be applied to more complicated traffic scenarios with moving obstacles. Simulation results in three different scenarios show that motion planning can achieve satisfactory performance in both structured and unstructured roads with moving obstacles.
