Abstract:Soil saline–alkaline stress and flooding extremes have been projected to be the main factors influencing the degradation of marsh plants in wetlands worldwide, which would affect their ecological functions (i.e. food source for migrating birds). Plants cope with flooding either by escaping from below water through shoot elongation or by remaining quiescent until water subsides. However, little is known about the adaptive strategies of Phragmites australis and Bolboschoenus planiculmis to flooding combined with salinity–alkalinity, which are the key environmental filters in Western Songnen Plain, China. Accordingly, this study investigated the adaptive strategies of P. australis and B. planiculmis subjected to the interacting effects of flooding and soil ion stress under field and greenhouse conditions. Results showed that the two species adopted different strategies to survive flooding. P. australis exhibited an escape strategy because of leaf and shoot elongation with increasing flooding depth whereas B. planiculmis became quiescent with no or deceased leaf and shoot elongation and biomass accumulation. High soil ion stress changed the flooding adaptive strategy of P. australis to a quiescence strategy, whereas B. planiculmis remained quiescent with increasing flooding depth at each soil ion content. The strategies of the two species were changed by alkaline ion stress but not by saline ion stress, and they exhibited different adaptive responses. High alkaline ion stress induced P. australis to remain quiescent with increasing flooding depth, whereas low alkaline ion stress promoted B. planicumis to escape from below water, probably due to the buffer effect of low alkaline ion contents outside the roots probably. Hence, P. australis and B. planicumis might adopt the quiescence strategy with increasing degree of soil salinization and alkalization under high greenhouse gas emissions scenarios in Western Songnen Plain, which may lead to severe degradation of the two kinds of marshes in the future.

Abstract:Inland saline marshes in northeastern China have unique soil characteristics and population distribution features. Hydrological change is a critical environmental factor causing wetland degradation and soil salinization in this region. The growth and reproductive responses of typical wetland plants to dry-wet alternations are essential for restoring inland saline marshes. A pot experiment was conducted to study the growth and reproductive responses of Phragmites australis populations to three hydrological treatments simulating drought degradation (drought), permanent inundation restoration (flooding), and seasonal inundation restoration (dry-wet). The species showed different growth and reproductive responses to the three treatments. After 120 d, the drought conditions induced a lower biomass, root length and root surface area of P. australis, but with higher root diameter, soluble sugar, and Na+ ion contents. Flooding and alternating dry-wet treatments induced the opposite responses. Alternating dry-wet treatments can be considered a better solution to effectively conserve water and meet the water needs of P. australis in the current growing season. The biomass under the alternating wet and dry treatment was the same as that under flooding, but the number of rhizome shoots was lower. The alternating dry-wet treatments was able to recover the growth of P. australis in the current season, but the potential for asexual reproduction of the species was insufficient.
Effects of High Salinity and Water Stress on Wetland Grasses from the Spanish Mediterranean Coast

Abstract:The impacts of climate change are reaching unprecedented levels, heightening the risk of species loss and ecosystem service degradation. Wetlands, highly threatened ecosystems, serve vital ecological functions by capturing carbon, filtering water, and harbouring diverse wildlife. Coastal wetlands encounter many challenges, such as increased drought periods and escalating salinity levels, severely impacting plant biodiversity. Assessing how plants respond to various environmental stress factors is imperative for devising successful conservation strategies. In the present study, we examined three representative grass species found in various habitats within the Albufera Natural Park, close to the city of Valencia on the Spanish Mediterranean coast: Imperata cylindrica, Phragmites australis, and Saccharum ravennae. High salinity and water stress conditions were induced by subjecting the plants to irrigation with solutions containing 200, 400, 600, and 800 mM NaCl or withholding irrigation altogether to mimic coastal flooding and drought scenarios. The treatments were maintained until noticeable wilting of the plants occurred, at which point a range of stress biomarkers were determined, including photosynthetic pigments, ions, osmolytes, oxidative stress markers, and antioxidant metabolites, as well as antioxidant enzyme activities. Saccharum ravennae displayed the highest sensitivity to salt stress, whereas I. cylindrica appeared to be the most tolerant. The primary salinity tolerance mechanism observed in I. cylindrica and P. australis was a blockage of ion transport from the root zone to the aerial part, together with the salt-induced accumulation of proline and soluble sugars to high concentrations in the former. No significant effects of the water deficit treatment on the growth or biochemical parameters were observed for any of the analysed species. These findings offer valuable information for the effective management and conservation of coastal wetlands facing the challenges posed by climate change.

Abstract:Soil saline-alkalization is expanding and becoming a serious threat to the initial establishment of plants in inland salt marshes on the Songnen Plain in Northeast China. Bolboschoenus planiculmis is a key wetland plant in this area, and its root tubers provide food for an endangered migratory Siberian crane ( Grus leucogeranus ). However, the survival of this plant in many wetlands is threatened by increased soil saline-alkalization. The early establishment of B. planiculmis populations under salt and alkaline stress conditions has not been well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the response and adaption of the seedling emergence and growth of B. planiculmis to salt-alkaline mixed stress. In this study, B. planiculmis root tubers were planted into saline-sodic soils with five pH levels (7.31–7.49, 8.48–8.59, 9.10–9.28, 10.07–10.19, and 10.66–10.73) and five salinity levels (40, 80, 120, 160, and 200 mmol⋅L –1 ). The emergence and growth metrics, as well as the underlying morphological and physiological traits in response to salt-alkaline stress were explored for 2-week-old seedlings. The seedling emergence, growth, and leaf and root traits showed distinct responses to the pH and salt gradients. Under the lower saline-alkaline condition (pH ≤ 9.10–9.28 and salinity ≤ 80 mmol⋅L –1 ), the seedling growth was substantially facilitated or not significantly altered. Salinity affected the seedlings more significantly than alkalinity did. In particular, among the salt ions, the Na + concentration had predominantly negative effects on all the morphological and physiological traits of the seedlings. Seedling emergence was more tolerant to salinity and, based on its observed close relationships with pH and the alkaline ion CO 3 2– , was highly alkalinity-dependent. Moreover, the leaf area and photosynthetic rate, as well as the root surface area and tip number mainly accounted for the response of the seedling biomass to salt-alkaline stress. This is evidence of the adaption of B. planiculmis to saline-alkaline conditions largely due to the responses of its morphological and physiological traits. This study provides a mechanistic process-based understanding of the early seedling establishment of B. planiculmis populations in response to increased soil saline-alkalization in natural wetlands.

Abstract:Biogeochemical processes mediated by plants and soil in coastal marshes are vulnerable to environmental changes and biological invasion. In particular, tidal inundation and salinity stress will intensify under future rising sea level scenarios. In this study, the interactive effects of flooding regimes (non-waterlogging vs. waterlogging) and salinity (0, 5, 15, and 30 parts per thousand (ppt)) on photosynthetic carbon allocation in plant, rhizodeposition, and microbial communities in native (Phragmites australis) and invasive (Spartina alterniflora) marshes were investigated using mesocosm experiments and 13CO2 pulse-labeling techniques. The results showed that waterlogging and elevated salinity treatments decreased specific root allocation (SRA) of 13C, rhizodeposition allocation (RA) 13C, soil 13C content, grouped microbial PLFAs, and the fungal 13C proportion relative to total PLFAs-13C. The lowest SRA, RA, and fungal 13C proportion occurred under the combined waterlogging and high (30 ppt) salinity treatments. Relative to S. alterniflora, P. australis displayed greater sensitivity to hydrological changes, with a greater reduction in rhizodeposition, soil 13C content, and fungal PLFAs. S. alterniflora showed an earlier peak SRA but a lower root/shoot 13C ratio than P. australis. This suggests that S. alterniflora may transfer more photosynthetic carbon to the shoot and rhizosphere to facilitate invasion under stress. Waterlogging and high salinity treatments shifted C allocation towards bacteria over fungi for both plant species, with a higher allocation shift in S. alterniflora soil, revealing the species-specific microbial response to hydrological stresses. Potential shifts towards less efficient bacterial pathways might result in accelerated carbon loss. Over the study period, salinity was the primary driver for both species, explaining 33.2-50.8 % of 13C allocation in the plant-soil-microbe system. We propose that future carbon dynamics in coastal salt marshes under sea-level rise conditions depend on species-specific adaptive strategies and carbon allocation patterns of native and invasive plant-soil systems.
Direct and indirect effects of soil salinization on soil seed banks in salinizing wetlands in the Songnen Plain, China

Abstract:Soil salinization has become a widespread threat to the structure and ecological functioning of inland wetlands globally. Soil seed banks can be important for plant regeneration in salinizing wetlands. To explore the effects of soil salinization on soil seed banks and their potential role in revegetation, we studied the structure and composition of plant communities and soil seed banks along a soil salinization gradient, and analyzed the responses of Carex-dominated and Phragmites-dominated communities to saline-alkaline stress in the Songnen Plain, China. We found that the dominant species of aboveground vegetation were different along the soil salinization gradient. Carex spp. dominated in the non-salinized and mild salinity wetlands, and Phragmites australis dominated in wetlands with moderate and high levels of salinity. The species richness of aboveground vegetation, and the density and richness of soil seed banks were higher in wetlands with lower salinity. The structural equation model indicated that the difference in soil salinization was directly associated with the aboveground species richness, and density and richness of the soil seed banks, while it was indirectly associated with the density and richness of the soil seed banks by directly affecting the composition and the species richness of the aboveground vegetation. Soil seed banks in Phragmites communities were more tolerant of saline-alkaline stress than Carex communities. This study indicates that soil salinization affects the size and composition of soil seed banks and limits their role in plant regeneration in wetlands of the Songnen Plain. In addition to hydrological regulation, the reduction of soil salinity is necessary to protect and restore biodiversity in salinizing wetlands.

Abstract:Soil salinization and nitrogen (N) enrichment in saline–alkali soils resulting from human activities cause potential environmental pressure on Phragmites australis. However, the response of P. australis to N addition under different salt conditions remains unknown. This study examined the changes in soil properties and growth indices as well as their relationship to N addition through an in situ field experiment using three soil salinity levels with P. australis in the Yellow River Delta. The study showed that soil salinity levels significantly affected the effects of N addition on soil pH and water contents. N addition increased the soil NO3– contents and decreased soil available phosphorus (Avail. P) contents; however, soil salinity levels did not impact the effects of N addition on soil NO3− and Avail. P contents. N addition decreased the biomass of P. australis, since the decrease in the competitiveness for N sources changed the vegetation diversity. The results suggest that the biomass, plant height, and leaf soil plant analysis development (SPAD) values of P. australis increased with increasing soil Avail. P contents rather than soil NO3– contents. Therefore, we suggest the important role of Avail. P addition in N enrichment conditions in saline–alkali wasteland and estuarine wetland ecosystems.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are the most productive ecosystems worldwide and can provide important ecosystem services, yet the characteristics of microbial community within these systems remain poorly understood. Microbial community of salt marsh vegetation and the associated soil physio-chemical properties were investigated in this study. Three typical Suaeda australis, Phragmites australis, Spartina alterniflora wetlands, and non-vegetated bare mudflats in the Zhoushan Islands were studied to advance the understanding of the characteristics of soil bacterial communities in coastal wetlands. Results showed that the bare mudflats exhibited high pH value and soil moisture content compared with the vegetated samples. In different vegetation types, the organic matter content, total nitrogen, and total potassium content decreased in the order: S. alterniflora wetland > P. australis wetland > S. australis wetland, and there was no obvious difference in total phosphorous content. The halophytes could decrease soil salinity compared with bare mudflats. Proteobacteria, Nitrospinae, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, and Nitrospirae were the predominant level across all samples. Functional prediction showed that SPA-covered soil might play vital roles in sulphur cycling, while SUA and PHR covered soils were involved in nitrogen cycling. This study could provide the first insight into the microbial community of this study area and contribute to a better understanding of vegetation microbiota and bioremediation in coastal wetland ecosystem.
Salt Tolerance and Stress Level Affect Plant Biomass–density Relationships and Neighbor Effects

Abstract:It has been shown that plant biomass–density relationships are altered under extreme or stressed conditions. We do not know whether variation in biomass–density relationships is a direct result of stress tolerance or occurs via changes in plant–plant interactions. Here, we evaluated biomass–density relationships and neighbor effects in six plant species that differ in salt tolerance in a salt marsh, and conducted a literature review of biomass–density relationship under higher and lower stress levels. Our field study showed that both neighbor effects and the exponent of the biomass–density relationship (α) varied among plant species with different degrees of salt tolerance. There was a positive relationship between neighbor effects (measured as relative interaction index) and α-value among the tested species. The literature review showed that α and its variation increased under higher stress. Our results indicate that plant species with different salinity tolerance differ in the direction and strength of neighbor effects, resulting in variation in biomass–density relationships. Our results support the hypothesis that differences in biomass–density relationships among species are not due to differences in stress tolerance alone, they are mediated by changes in plant–plant interactions.
Chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange responses of maize seedlings to saline-alkaline stress

Sc., 16: 49-58 Responses of photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics and chlorophyll content of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings under combined salinity-alkalinity stress were examined. Investigation revealed that the net photosynthesis rate (P-n) and stomatal conductance (g(s)) decreased rapidly with increasing of salinity-alkalinity stress. The intercellular CO2 concentration (C-i) decreased at low salinity-alkalinity and increased at high salinity-alkalinity. The maximal efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry (F-V/F-M) decreased only at high salinity-alkalinity. The comprehensive photosynthesis performance index (PIABS) gradually decreased with increasing of salinity-alkalinity concentration. The JIP test showed that the electric transfer of donor side and acceptor side of PSII in maize seedlings were inhibited by high salinity-alkalinity stress. Stomatal limitation is the main reason of decreased photosynthesis rate at low salinity-alkalinity, and non-stomatal limitation, i.e. decreased photosynthesis activity in PSII plays an important role in decreased photosynthesis rate at high salinity-alkalinity.
Phenotypic plasticity variations in Phragmites australis under different plant-plant interactions influenced by salinity

Abstract:Abstract Coastal wetland ecosystems are increasingly threatened by escalating salinity levels, subjecting plants to salinity stress coupled with interactions in community. Abiotic factors can disrupt the balance between competition and facilitation among plant species. Investigating the effects of different neighboring species and trait plasticity could extend the stress gradient hypothesis and enhance understanding of vegetation distribution and diversity in salt marshes. We conducted a greenhouse experiment and investigated the plastic response of wetland grass Phragmites australis to 7 neighboring plants of 3 functional types (conspecifics, graminoids, and forbs) under soil salinity (0 g/L and10 g/L). Plant height, base diameter, density, leaf thickness, specific leaf area, total and part biomasses were measured. Additionally, the Relative Interaction Index (RII, based on biomass) and the Relative Distance Plasticity Index (RDPI) were calculated. Salinity significantly reduced the biomass, height, density, and diameter of P. australis. The functional types of neighboring plants also significantly affected these growth parameters. The influence of graminoids on P. australis was negative under 0 g/L, but this negative effect shifted to positive facilitation under 10 g/L. The facilitation effect of forbs was amplified under salinity, both supporting the stress gradient hypothesis. The growth traits of P. australis had plastic response to salinity and competition, such as increasing belowground biomass to obtain more water and resources. The RDPI was higher under salt condition than competitive conditions. The plant-plant interaction response to stress varies with plant functional types and traits plasticity.

Abstract:Soil salinization is an important factor that limits global agricultural production, specifically limiting the effectiveness of nitrogen-carbon resources and inhibiting plant growth. However, previous observations have focused on resource allocation, and there is little information about the coordination of carbon-nitrogen acquisition, allocation, and regulatory processes.We performed glasshouse pot experiments under different saline-alkaline conditions, and we measured 66 above- and belowground functional traits of Bolboschoenus planiculmis , to examine carbon-nitrogen resource acquisition and allocation strategies and their driving processes.Saline-alkaline conditions shifted B. planiculmis root-leaf functional traits toward a more acquisitive phenotype. Under low saline-alkaline conditions, although the root-leaf economic strategy inhibited resource acquisition efficiency, the opportunistic carbon-nitrogen capture and allocation strategy contributed to the maintenance of normal growth. However, highly saline-alkaline conditions led to the early enrichment of carbon-nitrogen resources in the corm. Additionally, saline-alkaline conditions altered the importance of physiological and biochemical processes in the carbon and nitrogen allocation regulatory network.In summary, B. planiculmis uses an opportunistic resource acquisition strategy under saline-alkaline conditions and a salt-avoidance allocation strategy under highly saline-alkaline conditions. This approach enables the maintenance of growth dominance under saline-alkaline conditions via gradient resource utilization.

Abstract:We tested wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings under five different saline and alkaline stress (9:1 molar ratio of NaCl/Na 2 SO 4 and 9:1 molar ratio of NaHCO 3 /Na 2 CO 3 , respectively) regimes of differing severity for 7 d, comparing growth, germination, and ionic balance of wheat seedlings, to elucidate the mechanism of alkaline stress (high pH) damage to wheat, and it physiological adaptive mechanism to alkaline stress. We found that alkalinity had a more severe effect on wheat seedlings than salinity, preventing germination before and after recovery, and severely inhibiting shoot and root growth. Plants responded to both saline and alkaline stress by accumulating Na + at the expense of K + , and by accumulating soluble osmolytes, but these effects were more pronounced under alkaline stress than saline stress. Alkaline stress also induced several specific responses such as the inhibition of fructan synthesis (fructan levels increased in response to salinity), the accumulation of organic acids, the accumulation of Ca 2+ and the depletion of H 2 PO 4 − The results suggest that specific damage caused by alkaline stress might reflect a massive influx of Na + , resulting in a severe deficit of negative charge. The plants respond by trying to restore the osmotic balance and synthesizing organic acids as counter‐ions to address the intracellular ion imbalance. These data provide important leads in the development of engineered wheat plants with improved stress tolerance.

Abstract:Phragmites australis is a prevalent species in the Chongming Dongtan wetland and is capable of thriving in various tidal flat environments, including high salinity habitats. P. australis population displays inconsistent ecological performances, highlighting the need to uncover their survival strategies and mechanisms in tidal flats with diverse soil salinities. Upon comparing functional traits of P. australis at multiple tidal flats (low, middle, and high) and their responses to soil physicochemical properties, this study aimed to clarify the salt-tolerant strategy of P. australis and the corresponding mechanisms. These results showed that leaf characteristics, such as specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content, demonstrated more robust stability to soil salinity than shoot height and dry weight. Furthermore, as salt stress intensified, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxisome (POD) in P. australis leaves at low tidal flat exhibited an increased upward trend compared to those at other tidal flats. The molecular mechanism of salt tolerance in Phragmites australis across various habitats was investigated using transcriptome sequencing. Weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) combined with differentially expressed genes (DEGs) screened out 3 modules closely related to high salt tolerance and identified 105 core genes crucial for high salt tolerance. Further research was carried out on the few degraded populations at low tidal flat, and 25 core genes were identified by combining WGCNA and DEGs. A decrease in the activity of ferroptosis marker gonyautoxin-4 and an increase in the content of Fe 3+ in the degenerated group were observed, indicating that ferroptosis might participate in degradation. Furthermore, correlation analysis indicated a possible regulatory network between salt tolerance and ferroptosis. In short, this study provided new insights into the salt tolerance mechanism of P. australis population along tidal flats.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands reclamation is facing the problem of salinization. Along with the alternation of ecosystem status, studying the following effect on soil properties becomes emergency. Here we reported the pH, salinity and elemental content (mainly metals) variation affected by the vegetation situations, water sources and geographic positions. The results showed that vegetation could lead the pH and salinity of seawater zones closer to that of freshwater zones in both spatial and time scales. Spartina alterniflora (SA) was the most efficient species among the investigated plants, causing decreases of 0.15–0.69 in pH and 2.250–3.821 in salinity. This result might be caused by the absorption of Ca and K from salt marshes by SA and Suaeda salsa (SS), due to the fact that the component content of calcium (all reduced to approximate one-third) and potassium (reduced in some samples) both decreased. Meanwhile, vegetation could improve soil in seawater zones in Fe content with no extra negative influences in elemental analysis. Thus, ecological engineered vegetation indicated great potential in alternating coastal salt marshes to favorable wetlands or farmlands with almost primitive ecosystem. The results might be significant for ecological engineering and agricultural management in future.
Effects of environmental gradients on the performances of four dominant plants in a Chinese saltmarsh: implications for plant zonation

Abstract:Physical conditions and biotic interactions are believed to be the determinants of plant zonation in saltmarshes. However, in rapidly developing estuarine marshes, succession is regarded as the primary process responsible for plant zonation and it is controlled mainly by environmental factors. Salinity and inundation are two important factors responsible for the distribution pattern of dominant plants in coastal saltmarshes. Here we conducted a common garden experiment as well as a field transplanting to examine the responses of four dominant saltmarsh plants (native Scirpus mariqueter , Scirpus triqueter and Phragmites australis , and exotic Spartina alterniflora ) in the Yangtze River estuary to environmental gradients, which may help us understand their current and potential zonation. The results showed that Scirpus adapted to freshwater and less inundated habitats, Phragmites performed well in brackish or freshwater environments with less inundation, and Spartina tolerated the highest salinity and deepest inundation. In the harshest environments (the highest salinity and water level), only Spartina performed well. In the mild environments, however, there were only minor differences in the performances among the four species. The potential ranges of Phragmites and Spartina were predicted to be larger than their current ones, and their lower boundaries might be set by tidal scour rather than edaphic factors. With the saltmarsh succession, invasive Spartina in the Yangtze River estuary might ultimately replace Scirpus , and alter the zonal patterns of native saltmarsh plants, which will lead to severe ecosystem consequences. Thus, proper management measures (e.g., repeated mowing) need to be implemented to control this invasive exotic plant, and restore the vulnerable ecosystems invaded by Spartina in the Yangtze River estuary.
Plant Growth, Reproduction and Biomass Allocation in Response of Clonal Plant Spartina Anglica to Alternative Irrigation of Fresh and Saline Water

Abstract:Results of the greenhouse experiment showed that fresh and saline water alternation irrigation had significant effects on morphological traits,clonal characteristics,biomass accumulation and biomass allocation patterns of Spartina anglica coming from the Xinyang Harbor in Jiangsu Province,China.Six irrigation treatments were set up in our experiments including single irrigation with freshwater(D)or salt water(X),single alternating irrigation with freshwater and saltwater(DX and XD)and double alternating irrigation(DXD and XDX).With the DX treatment,plant height,number of leaves and the length of roots reached the maximal value.Meanwhile,the number of ramets was significantly higher than those of X,DXD and XDX treatments(P＜0.05);the number of buds and total rhizome length were significantly higher than those of XDX treatment(P＜0.05).Roots biomass,below-ground biomass and total biomass under DX and D treatments were both significantly higher than those of other treatments(P＜0.05).The results showed that S.anglica populations grew better with the DX treatment,which did good to sustain and regenerate the population.Not only X treatment but also excessive alternative irrigation of fresh and saline water worked against the growth and biomass accumulation of Spartina anglica.The results indicated that the frequent change in fresh and saline water for S.anglica vegetation area would explain the decline of its populations over its range.
Comparative metabolic responses and adaptive strategies of wheat (Triticum aestivum) to salt and alkali stress

Abstract:BackgroundIt is well known that salinization (high-pH) has been considered as a major environmental threat to agricultural systems. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between salt stress and alkali stress in metabolic profiles and nutrient accumulation of wheat; these parameters were also evaluated to determine the physiological adaptive mechanisms by which wheat tolerates alkali stress.ResultsThe harmful effect of alkali stress on the growth and photosynthesis of wheat were stronger than those of salt stress. High-pH of alkali stress induced the most of phosphate and metal ions to precipitate; as a result, the availability of nutrients significantly declined. Under alkali stress, Ca sharply increased in roots, however, it decreased under salt stress. In addition, we detected the 75 metabolites that were different among the treatments according to GC-MS analysis, including organic acids, amino acids, sugars/polyols and others. The metabolic data showed salt stress and alkali stress caused different metabolic shifts; alkali stress has a stronger injurious effect on the distribution and accumulation of metabolites than salt stress. These outcomes correspond to specific detrimental effects of a highly pH environment.ConclusionsCa had a significant positive correlation with alkali tolerates, and increasing Ca concentration can immediately trigger SOS Na exclusion system and reduce the Na injury. Salt stress caused metabolic shifts toward gluconeogenesis with increased sugars to avoid osmotic stress; energy in roots and active synthesis in leaves were needed by wheat to develop salt tolerance. Alkali stress (at high pH) significantly inhibited photosynthetic rate; thus, sugar production was reduced, N metabolism was limited, amino acid production was reduced, and glycolysis was inhibited.

Abstract:Soil salinization, an important and increasingly prevalent issue in arid regions, influences plant growth and carbon (C): nitrogen (N): phosphorus (P) stoichiometry patterns by limiting nutrient access. Plant C:N:P stoichiometry patterns and response to soil salinity among organs (e.g., leaves, stems and roots) reflect plants' trade-offs between access to resources and their adaptation strategies to different habitats. Common in marshes of arid middle-lower reaches of the Shule River Basin, China, Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud. (P. australis), is often the dominant species. The effects of soil salinity on the C:N:P stoichiometry among organs of P. australis were investigated in this study. The average N and P concentrations in leaves (19.09 ± 0.63 and 0.98 ± 0.05 g·kg-1, respectively) were significantly greater than those in roots (3.16 ± 0.16 and 0.76 ± 0.05 g·kg-1, respectively) and stems (3.80 ± 0.16 and 0.55 ± 0.05 g·kg-1, respectively) (P < 0.05). However, the average C concentrations in leaves (406.47 ± 5.37 g·kg-1) were not significantly different from those in stems (405.63 ± 6.03 g·kg-1) and roots (402.83 ± 7.94 g·kg-1) (P > 0.05). The N:P ratio in leaves (20.89 ± 0.81) was significantly greater than those in stems (8.95 ± 0.67) and roots (5.11 ± 0.49), while C:N and C:P ratios (22.33 ± 0.82 and 469.25 ± 26.81, respectively) were significantly lower than those in stems (114.56 ± 4.93 and 1014.49 ± 86.57, respectively) and roots (144.58 ± 8.25 and 693.00 ± 74.18, respectively) (P < 0.05). N and P concentrations of leaves and C concentration of stems under high soil salinity were significantly lower than those in low and medium soil salinity, whereas C:P and N:P ratios of leaves and C:P ratio of stems were significantly greater than the others (P < 0.05). Soil salinity played a dominant role in determining leaf's and root's C:N:P stoichiometry of P. australis. This indicated that plant in arid marshes adapt to soil salinity conditions by modulating the changes in solute penetration in leaves and roots. These lead to diverse stoichiometric response patterns of C:N:P stoichiometry among organs. The information helps to understand C:N:P stoichiometry patterns, nutrient utilization strategy and carbon allocation of dominant plants and its potential responses to global changes in the marsh wetland ecosystems of arid regions.
