Abstract:Ethane-selective adsorbents having high adsorption capacities along with high selectivity toward C2H6 are required to develop a cost-effective adsorption process for the facile separation of ethane (C2H6) from the ethane and ethylene (C2H4) mixture. Understanding the roles of physicochemical properties of the C2H6 -selective adsorbent in terms of its C2H6/C2H4 separation performance is especially essential for the design of novel advanced materials. Herein, we selected the known metal-organic framework structure, namely, the pillared three-dimensional framework DUT-8, which is synthesized by incorporation of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid as a linker. We compared physicochemical properties of DUT-8 according to the framework flexibility and the type of metal ion. Even though the framework stability of DUT-8 is very low in the presence of water vapor, we further evaluated the C2H6/C2H4 separation performance of isomorphous DUT-8(M) adsorbents with different metal ions (M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) by means of single-gas isotherm measurements, ideal adsorbed solution theory calculations, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, and density functional theory calculations. Separation results showed that preferential uptakes of C2H6 were observed from the C2H6/C2H4 mixture particularly over the rigid framework of DUT-8 (Cu and Ni) through the C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interaction close to the metal node. Thus, high selectivity of C2H6 was achieved over DUT-8(Cu and Ni) along with high uptakes of C2H6 (up to 11.2 mmol/g) at a temperature range of 283-303 K and pressure of 10 bar. The breakthrough separation results on DUT-8 (Cu) showed that the binary mixture of C2H6/C2H4 (1 : 9 v/v) can be effectively separated at pressures of 1 and 5 bar with high productivity of high purity ethylene (20.8 L/kg at 1 bar and 45.0 L/kg at 5 bar). The facile regeneration possibility over DUT-8 is confirmed by the dynamic desorption studies, expecting continuous production of high purity ethylene.
Computational Study on Adsorption and Separation of H2/CH4/CO2 in Double-Walled Metal-Dipyrazole Frameworks

Abstract:The density functional theory (DFT) and molecular simulation techniques were employed to comprehensively study the structural characteristics and adsorption and separation properties of H2/CH4/CO2 in six novel double-walled dipyrazole metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), BUT-53 to BUT-58 (BUT: Beijing University of Technology). The six new MOFs were characterized using numerical Monte Carlo methods, based on crystal structures optimized through DFT calculations. The results reveal that six MOFs exhibit large specific surface area (1068 – 1780 cm2·g-1), high porosity (0.27 – 0.44 cm3·g-1), and suitable pore size (4.34 – 8.15Å), which are advantageous for gas adsorption and separation. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation was implemented to study gas adsorption and separation properties at both 77 and 298K. The simulation results demonstrate that BUT-57 possesses the highest storage capacity for pure component gas, while BUT-53 owns the best separation properties for binary mixture gases. Meanwhile, we propose an approach to enhance the selectivity for CO2 by augmenting the availability of nitrogen sites in porous MOFs, thereby offering some insights for related experimental investigations.

Abstract:Benzene, cyclohexane, and cyclohexene are essential raw materials in the petrochemical industry. Their separation and purification rely on traditional distillation processes that consume tremandous energy due to their close boiling points. Here, we describe a new microporous metal-azolate framework for mild adsorptive and kinetic separation of the three hexacyclic hydrocarbons. That metal-azolate framework exhibits ultrafast benzene adsorption in a short saturation time within seconds and ultrafast kinetic adsorptive separation for benzene/cyclohexane and benzene/cyclohexene. Investigation into the adsorption kinetics of benzene, cyclohexane and cyclohexene reveals a two-step adsorption process, including steps of intraparticle diffusion and surface adsorption, respectively. Also, by adjusting the sample particle size, the adsorption behaviour can be significantly controlled. The large-particle sample achieves a high selectivity for benzene/cyclohexene (94.3) and an inverse selectivity for cyclohexane/cyclohexene, being oppsite to the small-particle sample. This highlights the feasibility of controlling adsorption selectivity by manipulating the kinetic steps in porous materials.

Abstract:Benzene is an important air pollutant and a key chemical feedstock for the synthesis of cyclohexane. Because of the small difference of 0.6 degrees C in their boiling points, the separation of benzene and cyclohexane is extremely challenging. Here, we report the high adsorption of ben-zene at low pressure and efficient separation of benzene/cyclohexane, achieved by the control of pore chemistry of two families of robust metal-organic frameworks, UiO-66 and MFM-300. At 298 K, UiO-66-CuII shows an exceptional adsorption of benzene of 3.92 mmol g-1 at 1.2 mbar and MFM-300(Sc) exhibits a high selectivity of 166 for the separation of benzene/cyclohexane (v/v = 1/1) mixture. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neutron powder diffraction, and multiple spectroscopic techniques reveal the binding mechanisms of benzene and cyclohexane in these materials. We also report the first example of direct visualization of reversible binding of benzene at an open Cu(II) site within metal-organic frameworks.
Adsorption of Aromatic Compounds on Porous Covalent Triazine-Based Framework.

Abstract:Covalent triazine-based frameworks (CTFs) are an emerging class of polymers whose adsorption properties of organic chemicals are not well understood. The main objective of this work was to evaluate combined effects of the functional groups of aromatic solutes and the triazine structure of a synthesized CTF on adsorption in aqueous solutions. Adsorption of the hydroxyl-, amino-, nitro-, and sulfonate-substituted monocyclic and bicyclic aromatic compounds was generally stronger than their non-substituted, nonpolar counterparts (benzene and naphthalene). When compared with Amberlite XAD-4 resin, one of the most common and widely used polymeric adsorbents, the CTF showed much stronger adsorption toward the polar and/or ionic compounds. To explain the adsorption enhancement of CTF, several specific, non-hydrophobic mechanisms were proposed, including hydrogen bonding (hydroxyl- and amino-substituted compounds), electrostatic attraction (anionized compounds), and π-π electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction (nitroaromatic compounds) with the triazine structure of CTF. The hypothesized mechanisms were further supported by the observed pH dependence of adsorption. Resulting from size exclusion, adsorption of large-size dissolved humic acids on the homogeneous, nanopored (1.2 nm in size) CTF was negligible and did not affect adsorption of aromatic solutes. Additional advantages of fast adsorption/desorption kinetics and complete adsorption reversibility made CTF a superior adsorbent for aromatic compounds.
A Novel Al-Based Mof with Straight Channel and Pocket Pore Structure for Trace Benzene Adsorption and Benzene/Cyclohexane Separation

Abstract:Benzene (Bz) vapor poses significant health risks to humans, even at trace concentrations. Additionally, the separation and recycling of Bz and cyclohexane (Cy) is challenging due to their similar kinetic diameters and boiling points. Developing an adsorption-separation material with stronger interactions with Bz than with Cy could serve as a viable strategy for trace Bz adsorption and Bz/Cy separation. In this study, we present a novel aluminum-based metal-organic framework, ZJU-521(Al), composed of tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl)methane and a helical chain [Al5(OH)7(- COO)8]infinity, featuring a simple network of one-way rods and tetrahedra. This framework exhibited a uniform micropore size of 7.23 & Aring; and a specific surface area of 1,248 m2 g- 1, demonstrating excellent trace Bz adsorption (4.18 mmol g- 1) at P/P0 = 0.01, attributed to its straight channel and orthogonal-array pocket pore structure. The ideal adsorbed solution theory selectivity and separation factor values of ZJU-521 (Al) for Bz/Cy were 22.50 and 6.20, respectively, indicating its potential as a material for Bz/Cy separation. Multicomponent simulations showed that Bz molecules were preferentially adsorbed in the pocket due to stronger interactions, such as Al-t interactions. Thus, ZJU-521(Al) exhibits stronger interactions with Bz than with Cy, facilitating effective Bz/Cy separation.
A Novel Kgd-Topological Covalent Organic Framework with Optimum Pore Size for Efficient Benzene/Cyclohexane Separation.

Abstract:Separation of benzene and cyclohexane is essential for obtaining high-purity cyclohexane in the chemical industry and for resource recovery from exhaust gas, but is one of the most challenging separation processes due to their highly similar boiling points and kinetic diameters. Herein, based on the isoreticular contraction strategy, a novel covalent organic framework (i.e., HFPB-TAB-COF) with kgd topological structure and average pore size of 5.70 Å, between the kinetic diameters of benzene (5.60 Å) and cyclohexane (6.10 Å), is synthesized for benzene/cyclohexane separation by pore confinement effect. HFPB-TAB-COF has the highest ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivity of 36.0 for benzene/cyclohexane separation, and can produce 0.48 mmol g-1 cyclohexane with purity of +99% from 50:50 (v:v) benzene/cyclohexane mixture under dynamic condition, higher than reported separation materials. Optimizing the pore size of COFs by isoreticular contraction strategy can trigger the pore confinement effect for better meeting the separation challenge in industry.

Abstract:Covalent assembly of organic linkers with higher denticity toward three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic framework (COF) nets of increasing connectivity can not only elevate the architectural intricacy of the framework but also impart it with unprecedented functionalities. The synthesis of highly-connected 3D COFs is in its incipient stage and the 3D COFs built from octadentate linkers are limited to (8,2), (8,3) and (8,4)-connected nets. Here we report the discovery of the first (8,8)-connected 3D COF, TUS-88, having bcu topology by linking an 8-connected D4h-symmetric quadrangular prism node to an 8-connected D2h-symmetric tetragonal prism node. Derived from the π-aromatic conjugated system of pyrene and the abundant aromatic phenyl rings composing the COF scaffold which promotes to stronger π···π interactions with aromatic benzene (Bz) molecules, a superlative Bz uptake of 1618 mg g-1 was achieved for TUS-88, coupled with exemplary cyclohexane (Cy) uptake of 842 mg g-1 and ideal Bz/Cy selectivity of 1.92 which are the current benchmark. Breakthrough experiments accomplished using Bz/Cy (1:1, v/v) mixture corroborated the preferential adsorption of Bz by the COF from the mixture to generate high purity Cy with a significant time interval of 75.4 min g-1 and record-setting Bz/Cy breakthrough selectivity of 2.46.

Abstract:A flexible hydrogen‐bonded organic framework with solvent channels. It transforms into a non‐porous crystal after losing the solvent. More interestingly, the non‐porous crystals can open its channels to accommodate benzene from the mixed vapor of benzene and cyclohexane with a high selectivity of 96.5%, and recovers to the original framework. The crystal material can be reused with no loss of separation performance. A nonplanar phenothiazine derivative with three cyano moieties (PTTCN) is designed and synthesized to achieve functional crystals for absorptive separation of benzene and cyclohexane. PTTCN can crystallize into two kinds of crystals with different fluorescence colors in different solvent systems. The molecules in two crystals are in different stereo isomeric forms of nitrogen, quasi axial (ax), and quasi equatorial (eq). The crystals with blue fluorescence in ax form may selectively adsorb benzene by a single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal (SCSC) transformation, but separated benzene from a benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture with a low purity of 79.6%. Interestingly, PTTCN molecules with eq form and benzene co‐assembled to construct a hydrogen‐bonded framework (X‐HOF‐4) with S‐type solvent channels and yellow‐green fluorescence, and can release benzene to form nonporous guest‐free crystal under heating. Such nonporous crystals strongly favor aromatic benzene over cyclohexane and may selectively reabsorb benzene from benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture to recover original framework, and the purity of benzene can reach ≈96.5% after release from framework. Moreover, reversible transformation between the nonporous crystals and the guest‐containing crystals allows the material to be reused.

Covalent Triazine Frameworks Based on the First Pseudo-Octahedral Hexanitrile Monomer via Nitrile Trimerization: Synthesis, Porosity, and CO2 Gas Sorption Properties

Abstract:Herein, we report the first synthesis of covalent triazine-based frameworks (CTFs) based on a hexanitrile monomer, namely the novel pseudo-octahedral hexanitrile 1,4-bis(tris(4'-cyano-phenyl)methyl)benzene 1 using both ionothermal reaction conditions with ZnCl2 at 400 °C and the milder reaction conditions with the strong Brønsted acid trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMS) at room temperature. Additionally, the hexanitrile was combined with different di-, tri-, and tetranitriles as a second linker based on recent work of mixed-linker CTFs, which showed enhanced carbon dioxide captures. The obtained framework structures were characterized via infrared (IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and gas sorption measurements. Nitrogen adsorption measurements were performed at 77 K to determine the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas range from 493 m2/g to 1728 m2/g (p/p0 = 0.01-0.05). As expected, the framework CTF-hex6 synthesized from 1 with ZnCl2 possesses the highest surface area for nitrogen adsorption. On the other hand, the mixed framework structure CTF-hex4 formed from the hexanitrile 1 and 1,3,5 tricyanobenzene (4) shows the highest uptake of carbon dioxide and methane of 76.4 cm3/g and 26.6 cm3/g, respectively, at 273 K.
Enhanced Adsorption of Aromatic Volatile Organic Compounds on a Perchloro Covalent Triazine Framework through Multiple Intermolecular Interactions

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may have short‐ and long‐term adverse health effects. Especially, aromatic VOCs including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) are important indoor air pollutants. Developing highly efficient porous adsorbents with broad applicability remains a major challenge. In this paper, a perchlorinated covalent‐triazine framework (ClCTF‐1‐400) is prepared for adsorbing BTEX. The structure of the prepared ClCTF‐1‐400 is confirmed by using FTIR, XRD, Raman, solid‐state 13C NMR, XPS, SEM and TEM, and the pore distribution is also determined. It is found that ClCTF‐1‐400 is reversible VOCs absorbent with very high absorption capacities, which can adsorb benzene (693 mg g−1), toluene (621 mg g−1), ethylbenzene (603 mg g−1), o‐xylene (500 mg g−1), m‐xylene (538 mg g−1), and p‐xylene (592 mg g−1) at 25 °C and their saturated vapor pressure (∼ 1 kPa). ClCTF‐1‐400 is of higher adsorption capacities for all selected VOCs than activated carbon and other reported adsorbents. The adsorption mechanism is also inferred through theoretical calculation and in‐site FTIR. The observed excellent BTEX adsorption performance is attributed to the multiple weak interactions between the ClCTF‐1‐400 frameworks and aromatic molecules through multiple weak interactions (C‐H...π and C‐Cl...π). Linker Engineering in Mixed-Ligand Metal-Organic Frameworks for Simultaneously Enhanced Benzene Adsorption and Benzene/ Cyclohexane Separation

Abstract:The development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that simultaneously possess high adsorption capacity and selectivity for benzene (Bz)/cyclohexane (Cy) separation is a formidable challenge. In this study, we employ the mixed-ligand approach to construct two novel isoreticular MOFs, designated DZU-72 and -73, to regulate Bz adsorption and Bz/Cy separation performances. Guided by the linker engineering, we have incorporated distinct dicarboxylate ligands, benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H2BDC) and naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) with different aromatic rings, as second ligands into the frameworks of two MOFs, respectively. Vapor adsorption tests demonstrate that DZU-73 featuring naphthalene ring units exhibits superior uptake for Bz (6.92 mmol g−1) compared to DZU-72 (Bz: 4.30 mmol g−1) with benzene ring units. The calculated selectivity for Bz/Cy separation shows that DZU-73 has an IAST selectivity value of about 28.1, nearly 2.5 times that of DZU-72 (11.3). Breakthrough experiments further reveal that DZU-73 can effectively separate Bz/Cy mixed vapors with an interval time of 17.6 min g−1. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the synergistic effects of optimal pore environments and host-guest interactions from the naphthalene ring are pivotal in significantly enhancing the Bz adsorption capacity and Bz/Cy selectivity of DZU-73. This work highlights that linker engineering in mixed-ligand MOFs is a powerful strategy for tuning the Bz adsorption and Bz/Cy separation.

Abstract:Abstract The separation and purification of C6 cyclic hydrocarbons (benzene, cyclohexene, cyclohexane) represent a critically important but energy intensive process. Developing adsorptive separation technique to replace thermally driven distillation processes holds great promise to significantly reduce energy consumption. Here we report a flexible one-dimensional coordination polymer as an efficient adsorbent to discriminate ternary C6 cyclic hydrocarbons via an ideal molecular sieving mechanism. The compound undergoes fully reversible structural transformation associated with removal/re-coordination of water molecules and between activated and hydrocarbon-loaded forms. It exhibits distinct temperature- and adsorbate-dependent adsorption behavior which facilitates the complete separation of benzene, cyclohexene and cyclohexane from their binary and ternary mixtures, with the record-high uptake ratios for C 6 H 6 /C 6 H 12 and C 6 H 10 /C 6 H 12 in vapor phase and highest binary and ternary selectivities in liquid phase. In situ infrared spectroscopic analysis and ab initio calculations provide insight into the host-guest interactions and their effect on the preferential adsorption and structural transformation.

A Rod‐Packing Hydrogen‐Bonded Organic Framework with Suitable Pore Confinement for Benchmark Ethane/Ethylene Separation

Abstract:AbstractFor the separation of ethane from ethylene, it remains challenging to target both high C2H6 adsorption and selectivity in a C2H6‐selective material. Herein, we report a reversible solid‐state transformation in a labile hydrogen‐bonded organic framework to generate a new rod‐packing desolvated framework (ZJU‐HOF‐1) with suitable cavity spaces and functional surfaces to optimally interact with C2H6. ZJU‐HOF‐1 thus exhibits simultaneously high C2H6 uptake (88 cm3 g−1 at 0.5 bar and 298 K) and C2H6/C2H4 selectivity (2.25), which are significantly higher than those of most top‐performing materials. Theoretical calculations revealed that the cage‐like cavities and functional sites synergistically “match” better with C2H6 to provide stronger multipoint interactions with C2H6 than C2H4. In combination with its high stability and ultralow water uptake, this material can efficiently capture C2H6 from 50/50 C2H6/C2H4 mixtures in ambient conditions under 60 % RH, providing a record polymer‐grade C2H4 productivity of 0.98 mmol g−1.

Abstract:Separating benzene from its cyclohexane and cyclohexene mixtures is a challenge in the petrochemical industry. Herein, we developed a B←N framework (BNF) approach, for the first time, to realize a BNF-2 for highly selective recognition and separation of benzene. Although the primary moieties of BNF-2 are one-dimensional (ID) B←N polymers, in the presence of benzene, such chains can be self-assembled into a two-dimensional (2D) framework of open structure to encapsulate benzene molecules; therefore, BNF-2 can be readily utilized for separating benzene from its liquid binary C6H6/C6H12 (1:1) and C6H6/C6H10 (1:1) and ternary C6H6/C6H10/C6H12 (2:1:1) mixtures to obtain benzene with purity of 99.2%, 97.8%, and 97.2%, respectively. Importantly, the included benzene molecules can be released simply by gentle heating to produce benzene of almost 100% purity, whereas the resulting closed framework material can be straightforwardly recovered and reused through simple recrystallization. Molecular modeling demonstrated the suitable pores in BNF-2 with matchable steric electrostatic potential (ESP) toward C6H6.

Abstract:Due to almost identical boiling points of benzene and cyclohexane, the extraction of trace benzene from cyclohexane is currently performed via the energy-intensive extractive distillation method. Their adsorptive separation by porous materials is hampered by their similar dimensions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with versatile pore environments are capable of molecular discrimination, but the separation of trace substrates in liquid-phase remains extremely challenging. Herein, we report a robust MOF (NKU-300) with triangular channels decorated with crown ether that can discriminate trace benzene from cyclohexane, exhibiting an unprecedented selectivity of 8615(10) for the mixture of benzene/cyclohexane (v/v = 1/1000). Remarkably, NKU-300 demonstrates exceptional selectivities for the extraction of benzene from cyclohexane over a wide range of concentrations of 0.1%-50% with ultrafast sorption kinetics and excellent stability. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and computational modelling reveal that multiple supramolecular interactions cooperatively immobilise benzene molecules in the triangular channel, enabling superior separation performance. This study will promote the application of advanced sorbents with tailored binding sites for challenging industrial separations.

Abstract:Effective separation of olefins from hydrocarbon mixtures can provide more high-quality feed for steam cracking to produce ethylene and propylene. In this paper, metal organic framework material Cu-BTC (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid) was optimally synthesized by solvothermal method and the effects of synthesis condition on the adsorption capacity were investigated. The adsorption capacities of 1-hexene and n-hexane at 298 K were 122.31 mg/g (1.45 mmol/g) and 18.95 mg/g (0.22 mmol/g) respectively, and the selectivity was 6.45. Furthermore, by introducing acetic acid in the synthesis, three acetic groups replace one BTC linker to combined with the Cu paddlewheel clusters in the Cu-BTC skeleton, giving stronger attraction to carbon-carbon double bonds and improving the BET specific surface area, increasing from 859 m2·g−1 to 1297 m2 g−1. The adsorption capacity of 1-hexene was increased. Meanwhile, the adsorption of n-hexane was restrained. When n (H3BTC): n (AcOH) = 1:0.8, the BET specific surface area of the modified Cu-BTC reached 1297 m2/g. The adsorption capacity of 1-hexene and n-hexane were 187.90 mg/g (2.23 mmol/g) and 10.75 mg/g (0.12 mmol/g), respectively. The selectivity increased to 17.48. Furthermore, the modified Cu-BTC exhibited excellent performances for the separation of C7 and C8 olefin/paraffin mixtures.
